Q&A: yes I could get a real compound bow, but actually I don't want to because of the following reasons:
    1. Compound bows have a complicated system which is hard to repair in the field,
    2. They are quite heavy causing me to shake.
    3. They are bulky and cannot really be taken down quickly.
    4. Compounds bows are expensive
    My recurve bow
    1. Is easy to repair in the field
    2. Is pretty lightweight
    3. Can be taken down
    4. My setup only costs 200 euros
In my opinion my "HYBRID" setup is the perfect survival bow. Also if anything breaks with the sight, peep or release I can always switch back to bare bow shooting.
    Thanks for watching.

I have been using a similar sight setup on my recurves too. It takes out a lot of the guess work in aiming compared to instinct shooting without sights. The sight peep and the rubber band do require regular maintenance. The peep will shift along the string after several hundred shots, and the rubber will break often. My instinct bow friends would laugh at the setup, but I like it very much.

Tighten your wrist strap a little, then hold the bow more loosely. At full draw, open your hand so the bow rests in the web between your thumb and index finger, in line with your wrist. With your hand relaxed, point your four fingers at the target. Lastly, pull the trigger on your release the way you do on your rifle, squeeze it slowly. It should surprise you when it releases. Once you have your bow set up the way you like, practice your longest shots first to force you to focus better. That will tighten up your shorter shots. When you shoot at a target put multiple spots to shoot at, and never shoot more than one arrow per spot. That way you will not Robin Hood your expensive arrows. I am an archery coach.

    • @FrankEgyed
      @FrankEgyed 4 роки тому

Great advice. However, when I tried this I found my bow on the ground after each shot, so I had to use a wrist strap like the Olympic shooters (which is why they use them). But I didn't want another piece of kit in the field. So now I just circle the grip with thumb and forefinger, the only contact with the bow grip is the webbing between these fingers, and point the other fingers at the target. Avoid touching the heel of the hand to the grip as well, as this can induce vertical torque. Think "archery shooting machine"

I've shot traditional, hybrid, compounds, and crossbows. Personally I tried to be as accurate as possible with all. I hunt and I want to sure that I make a good clean kill shot and that's what I think is more important. In a survival situation being able to be more accurate and make a good kill shot either to put meat on the table or in self-defense is what matter most. In survival being able to think outside of the box and improvise and improve in definitely a good thing. So no complaints here. I say if it help you then more power to you. Good job.

Nice shooting Lilly. I love field archery courses especially with all the difficult shots which mimic the hunt. We had a stream station with a fish target and a platform shot similar to a tree stand. We even had an obscure shot target that required kneeling. I shoot the same release and peep sight but use an elevation adjustable cross hair with neon dot. The elevations are marked in meters so it is easy to adjust in the field. I shoot a compound with high draw weight, but I also shoot recurve and bare bow. The compound is more forgiving when sitting in cold wind for 8 hours and have to quickly draw with stiff arms.

glad to see the setup working out for you

If they don't like the accessories you use when you shoot just smile and wink at them. It is none of their business. I usually have an 8 inch square piece of gorilla grip drawer and shelf liner in my quiver. It helps get a better grip on the arrow to pull it out of the target. It also helps protect from slivers from beat up wood arrows. I also use it in the shop under wood I am cutting or routering to keep the wood from sliding.

Lilly thank you so much for making this video. I live in Florida and there aren’t any traditional archery shops anywhere near me. Therefore I don’t have any help to fix my form, anchor, release, etc. I’ve shot traditional for a few years and just can’t get consistent on my own. So I just bought a sight for my bow. Hopefully it will help me get more consistent bc I don’t feel comfortable hunting with it currently without a sight. The trad archery’s may hate us but we will make more accurate ethical shots on wild game!

The nice thing about archery is that it is a choose your own adventure kind of pursuit. You can shoot this bow with or without all of the added components and if you are enjoying your experience that is all that matters. For me personally the reason why I shoot "traditional" off the shelf no sights, no peep, no release aids is that its a challenge. The first time I shot a compound bow I was hitting the 10 and 12s immediately it was like playing a game with all the cheat codes on for me personally I did not get anything from that experience. But shooting a longbow with no accessories puts very little between you and the tip of the arrow and its all on you if you fail or not.
But just a bit of info if you plan on competing with a single string bow or plan on hunting in a traditional only hunting unit you cant have any of this on your bow other than the rest.

I might disagree with you here...I shoot both traditional and compound. With a traditional bow, there is no let-off of holding pressure like a compound. With a recurve or longbow, the longer you aim, the longer you have to hold the weight back, which causes your muscles to tremble and makes your aim off. If you’re using a small-weight bow, no biggie. A big enough bow to hunt and do more than target practice, man you’re shaking while you aim. That’s like telling a sniper to be precise and then put him in the back of a truck on a gravel road...it just isn’t going to happen. I get her point, but literally decades of science and research says otherwise.

I've always wanted to shoot like Legolas... I've only been shooting a bit over a year, and very early in the piece I realised I couldn't hit the side of a barn with my recurve. So I reluctantly bought a (lots of moving bits ready to break) compound bow and tried it without the stupid extra piece of equipment destined to fail call a "release" and still couldn't hit the side of a barn. Yet with the release I could hit a 200mm target (deer kill-zone) consistently at 50m. So I put a D-loop on my recurve and used the release - OMG what a difference... (still not as accurate as the compound, but at least some consistency) I'd always planned to put a peep/sight on it, this video has motivated me - Thanks Lilly! :)

The release is the biggest single thing you can use to improve your shooting as a clean release with finger tabs is an art form that takes decades to perfect. Next the sight with rear peep.. Have you ever tried the under the chin draw. You literally kiss the bow string. Things are more in line but its more often used with a compound bow in target archery. Your doing fine for what you have. Keep eliminating variables. You need to be shooting other than wood arrows. Not sure maybe you are. Aluminum or carbon fiber or any material that can not retain moisture or have density variation. Or warp.

Try holding the bow with your hand open or with just one finger wrapped around the bows riser. That way you won't torque the bow when you release your arrow. torqueing is when you hold the bow tight and your wrist is holding pressure to the side and when you release it you wrist will snap back straight.

3:41 Double lung shots typically kill quicker than heart shots. Also, sometimes you can hit the spine if you shoot high. A spine shot kills almost instantly.
Edit: The spine shot does not kill them instantly. It paralyzes them. So that means you have to dispatch them with a second shot.

    • @vaportrail226
      @vaportrail226 4 роки тому

That's backwards. Heart shots typically kill faster than lung shots. Always helps to have a complete pass through on the double lung too. Depending on the species you can hit the heart and lungs. You'll watch that animal die.

Hello Lilly. I enjoy your channel from here in Texas. Broadheads fly significantly differently that target tipped arrows. Do you have a range with broadhead-capable targets and do you practice with them? Small game can be taken with target arrows perhaps and in a survival scenario which may be sufficient if abundant enough.

I think this makes sense from a survival perspective. Compound bows are more complicated and thus, more can go wrong. This is sort of a "best of breed(s)" in a practical sense. The *only* thing I would knock it for would be the release mechanism. Again...another possible failure point but less critical than say a cam getting bent or what not.

Wondering why you are using a rubber band for the peep sight. If you would use a non elastic material like a center serving string, you would have an effective draw length control. That would be beneficial especially at larger distances.

I would add a kisser button also. I don't care what traditional archers think. Whatever works for you. That's what's matters. A drop away rest could possibly also improve the accuracy. I shoot compound bow. Tight groups at 25m are pretty easy with compound bow. I'm a worse shooter with my air pistol.

3:34 "in general wild boar have the heart pretty much low" [points behind shoulder bone/upper leg].
I saw this American bow hunting veteran in a video and the summary of all cases he touched in the video: make sure to perforate both lungs. A heart shot will kill very fast, but is more easily missed, I guess. A shot that perforates both lungs will cause fainting and then death, like a heart shot, just a bit slower.
Especially under angles relative to a level and perfectly perpendicular side shot, the "both lung" approach might work better.
(for full transparency, I'm just parroting as an armchair expertologist ;) .)
