Jeff, I have watching your videos for 3 months and practicing with my new Top Archery recurve a couple of weeks ago. 20 years ago I finally gave up and went to a compound but was always disappointed. I thought I would try again and bought the bow and went to work. I have been improving steadily after 10 days and today I nearly got a Robin Hood. Wow what a day on the range, I feel like I owe you money for lessens..haha! Praise the Lord and many thanks!
Just learning recurve traditional archery at 45. I have listened to Fred Bear, Ted Nugent, and now Jeff of Instinctive Archery. I feel like God Almighty is leading my learning. Thank you brother, and Jesus bless.
Same! Fred Bear didn’t start till later in life either. I started at 40. 43 now and 4 deer taken with a trad bow. My shooting has been ok enough, but after watching this video, I’m nearly over my last hurtle! Thank you. There’s no feeling compared to a successful trad bow hunt. You really feel it in your soul. Never felt it with firearm hunting.
Jeff, I shot archery for decades since I was a kid in rural KY, first traditional, then compound, then back to traditional. BTW, when I bought my first Pearson recurve there were no compounds so we didn’t call it traditional. It was just a bow and arrow. 😀 I sold all of my archery stuff s couple of years ago when we moved to FL and bought a small condo. This video is excellent and certainly makes me consider shooting again. Thank you!
After two years of coaching, you have finally made sense of alignment in the draw arm. Coaches spend so much time on anchor points they push the draw itself into second place….thank you brother, I now have something visual to work with 🤙
Jeff this is probably the best video you have made in my opinion. For those watching this let me just say this. Jeff made me one of his Carbon Trace bows two years ago. Believe me when I say that I have tried shooting that bow every which way you can possibly think of. I am JUST NOW getting very poficient with it. I have shot bows for 65 years. I have shot recurves since ai was a kid. In my adult life I shot and competed with compound bows. I have won a lot of tournaments and things like that. Shooting a bow instinctively is the hardest thing I have ever done. It has taken me two years to master it. This is not an overnight journey shooting instinctively. But when it starts to come together, brother there is nothing that is more enjoyable than shooting instinctively and hitting what your looking at. So for those who may be getting discouraged, hang in there. Bring this video up and watch it all the time, because Jeff is exactly right in what he is teaching in this video. I can't tell you how important the form part of this type of shooting is. So thanks again for the video Jeff, and to the rest of the viewers out there, KEEP WITH IT! It will come in time. Jim

Loved this vid. Never hunted with archery, but some 32 years ago got my first Bear brand el'cheap 'o compound bow. Time went on, lost interest, another 25 years goes by like a blink. Now my son is grown, my grandson is 6 already, and for the last 3 years now have been absolutely loving shooting my Samick Sage recurve bow (instinct shooting / no sights ) but I got to admit, working around bifocals has presented a real challenge LOL Great vid dude.
Ole Duffer here, I have since I could crawl shoot anything that flung something downrange. As a grown up kid, I have dozens of toys, sling shots, rifles, shotguns, pistol, cross bows, compound and recurve. I recall my dad, giving away my Bear Kodiak (circa 1968?) wish I still had it. Just recently started shooting a recurve again. I am left eye dominate, but shot bows right hand. I am struggling to shoot where I am looking, usually about the distance between my eyes to the left off. I say your vid, and ding! a light went off, I have been shooting a 50lb, and it feels like there is no back wall, and hard to draw consistent. I moved up to a 70lb, and wow, what a difference. Watching your video made me finally get to where I can go hunting.
Best video I’ve ever watched on shooting form. I’ve had moderate success with a traditional bow but not consistent. I haven’t shot my bows in about 2 years. It’s dark out right now but this video makes me want to go shoot in front of some headlights. lol thank you!!
It’s uncanny that I should see this video. I just figured this out this past week. I realized that I was not getting my drawing elbow back into perfect alignment. Had to be consciously aware of my drawing elbow going all the way back and viola, accuracy improved! Thanks Jeff !
Jeff, I have been shooting for 15+ years and I used to be crazy accurate. Somewhere after a shoulder surgery and starting a job I lost my consistency. I watched this video and grabbed a tape measure to check my draw length. I realized my draw length was ranging from 27.5-30.5 with the same anchor point on my face. Sure enough locking my elbow back fixed the issue. I will try it out with my bow after I get home today!
Hi Jeff, first and foremost, I wanted to thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge on instinctive traditional archery ! I haven't yet watched all your videos but, so far, they have all been fantastic ! This one in particular, really hit home for me as I have been very discouraged with my overall consistency since my shoulder injuries 5 and 6 years ago. I have dropped my poundage to between 38 and 42 this year and that has helped. I can't thank you enough Jeff for sharing your personal struggles and frustrations with trying to improve. I felt exactly, and I mean exactly how you felt during that time. After watching this video something just clicked for me !! My shooting has improved so much these past few days that I felt the need to say thanks for providing such valuable knowledge and information, and for sharing your passion for traditional archery ! God bless and cheers from PEI Canada.
I shot olympic style for 30 years and now a LB for the last 10. This is so correct! Get that elbow, shoulder and scapula all locked in and aligned and let it rip! You make it look so easy and logical! Great video!
Just have to share my appreciation for this video. The tips you share made the biggest difference to my approach to a consistant draw with a consistant group. It has been a journey trying to refine my technique and I can honestly say the tips shared here are absolutely game changing! My sincere thanks Jeff, I am going to share with all the archery enthusiasts I know. God bless you and your family!

I push pretty well, but what I'm doing when I push can be out of wack. I have to remember to treat it like my draw hand on a pistol. I'm raising, extending, and POINTING at the target spot. Good advice.
Thanks Jeff. I'm getting into barebow so I can do a better job of coaching my 4H shooters who don't have compounds. 90% of success is form and consistency. Each discipline has its own tips and techniques that improve success. With my NASP students I teach them the fish hook anchor (index finger on corner of smile), and inevitably someone will raise their anchor so they're looking down the arrow. If they are more accurate doing that, I just reinforce the need to make sure their anchor point is repeatable.

Changed my anchor after watching this , I've had my finger at the corner of my mouth anchor since I started shooting recurve-bows a couple of years ago . Wow! Big ,instant improvement and as easy as pie to get used too , more natural better alignment instantly, I'd just never thought to try it until I watched this ...cheers Jeff your a bloody legend
Nice job with your explanation, I have 30+ years shooting trad and if someone asked me about form, I would send them your way because I didn't think I could tell the story as good.
Great tips and shooting. I have been thinking of getting back into Trad archery after many years away and have been looking online at some different custom bows and reviews. Got to say out of all the videos I have watched your bow by far is the quietest. To me that is a much appreciated attribute. Shooting deer with a dead quiet bow keeps there reaction low. Now you have me thinking maybe I need one of your bows.
Hello Jeff ! Thank you for the absolutely awesome video!! So informative. We spoke couple weeks ago and at that point you talked me into shooting a trad bow..Thank you very much buddy!! Any how im just getting started so i ordered a bow today on amazon!! Just wanting to try this as i have been a compound shooter for 50 yrs!! ir ordered a tidewe wooden takedown recurve at 35 pounds to start !! Im 63 and shoot my compound at 55 lbs. works for me and easy to draw . back in the early 90s i used to pull about 73 lbs. no need anymore with modern compounds as they are very fast now a days.. anyhow after taking 25 deer with a compound i feel i am ready to try trad shooting but seeing how my bow will be 35lbs it will just to get into the sport at least. if i get accurate like you its going to be fun!! Thanks again for your trad bow wisdom!!
Thanks for sharing this. Part of what you are talking about is consistency in your draw, ensuing you repeat the process each time. The other part which is either more crucial is body and shoulder alignment. Ironically I was discussing this with a new archer shooting a trad flatow on Friday and explaining the importance of alignment. It is something I've discussed and coach numerous students on . Last thing is thanks for saying about over bowing or drawing too heavy a bow too
Thanks for all you do for archery Jeff. I’ve never been what I consider a great shot but have become a much better shot with much tighter groups from watching your videos and content… This video was a great reminder, I watched it and grabbed my bow with a couple of sticks and cranked out 20 great shots. Thanks a million for your time and instruction!!!
Wonderful video Jeff I think you just gave me alot of insight into one of my shooting problems and why I have inconsistent shooting accuracy thank You so much
It’s called proper alignment & getting into your real Anchor which is when your Scapula is set. Your Scapula properly set is your Anchor where the string touches your face are just references. 99.9% of Archers don’t know that!
Keep practicing your draw Mark & you’ll feel your Scapula set itself for the shot. Ingrain that feeling Mark into your subconscious & eventually when you’re not in proper alignment it will feel wrong & you’ll let down & start over.
I struggle with this alot. Im getting better but i still have to check myself all the time. And i dont think none archers realise how hard this is, because it is hard, im doing better but not 100%, so this was probably for me the most helpful video youve done. Thankyou and godbless.
I started shooting in last 3 months recurve and compound. I did recurve first for 2 months I still struggling with hitting the target even at 15 yards. Few hits now and then. But I'm still slinging arrows. I'm fully into it. I have the sanlida royal x8 and a PSE shaman 60" 45#. Having fun doing at same time even though I miss.
Awesome tutorial as always, thanks Jeff. Dr. did some back surgery on me so I'm in dry-dock for a while, can't wait to work on your tips and start flinging sticks again!
Great video thanks for sharing ive been battling inconsistent shooting for years ive tried lower poundage different anchors sometimes im right on the money but most of the time i hit a couple perfect the rest hit randomly everywhere
Watching this video proved to me that I am overbowed. I can shoot a 3 shot group and one of them is so good that at the release I know it's hitting where I'm looking. The other 2 are off by several inches. I'm gonna have to drop bow weight as I can't unconsciously come to full draw with back tension. videoed myself after watching your vid and my elbow was often not aligned with the bowhand/arrow. Your shooting was beautiful.
Hi Jeff. Another grate video. For me getting good at Traditional archery was a long step by step process. Very humbling, I cant count how many times I thought about throwing my bow in the lake and switching to a compound lol. The trick for me is don't give up, keep working on the steps. This step was the step that took me from shooting in the low to mid 200s in 3D to shooting 280s 90s and braking 300 consistently. It was one of the last steps in my mental process but it really is like magic once you get it.
When I used to shoot compound bow competitions I was taught to pull through once I got to my anchor, now that I shoot my recurve I do the same thing and let the release surprise me
Excellent vid brother. I noticed you shoot 3 fingers under instead of spilt finger which is what I shoot. I never tried until 3 finger under until this year and it does seem to give a little more power through the draw when I shoot 3 fingers under. What's your take on this method? I've always seen the Bare-bow guys shoot like you do also and they shoot really good. Thanks, Greg
Jeff thank you for your videos. They have helped me improve. I think this video is especially important when bare shaft tuning. Earllier this month I had a nock left I could not get rid of until I reallized my draw elbow was out a little bit. I overcut the arrow. Moving the elbow around was a cure. I do have a question. I have trouble getting to anchor Its like my face gets in the wayof my draw hand any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have 4 1/2 vertical bows. A plastic chinese longbow, a semi custom (now) 'Survival' longbow, a Black Hunter recurve, and an old school compound. I can't claim to be a traditional shooter because due to nerve damage I have to use a release to draw and loose a bow over 30lbs.
What’s your favorite budget recurve bow for target shooting and hunting? I have a compound bow but I got tired of trying to set it up the way I thought I needed and it just simply being more complicated with everything on it. I’ve gave up on bow shooting till watching recurve videos and now I’ve watched a lot of yours and im glad I’ve found you! But what would be the best budget recurve bow for accuracy and hunting ability
I'm pretty sure I occasionally miss is because I'm 70, have a small cataract in my shooting eye, have long entertained target panic, shake a little and get tired walking the 20 yards to pull the arrows. I'll watch the video anyway, to see if you reveal some miraculous cure. Mission complete: "FIND THE ANCHOR & ROTATE."
The other day I asked what can i do with my arrows to fllight better, and It turned out like you sad my arrows were over spined, i got som heavy points 200 grain and my 35 pound with 31 inch started to fly were i aim, And with sholder rotation, got long arms have to pull 29.5 inch draw to get my sholder were it belongs like you showed , I been shooting 27.5 draw but my elbow was not in place, sometimes i get right on the spot from 25 yars, other times would go to right or left, been practicing so much and now I see whats happening here. Cause some times I get such acurate shots, but cant be consistent. Thank you so much 🤝
I have a 50lb Bear Black Bear I haven’t used in quite awhile.ld love to get back into it. How do I begin to fine tune bare shafts. I’m eager to try out your shooting tips.
Great tip, Thanks...I watched every Fred Bear vid and photo possible and still don't think he had a positive anchor. It does appear that his string arm is aligned with his bow arm though, Thanks for the great vid..
Jeff generally speaking i can do 2 inch groups at 10 yards but they always hit about 5 or 6 inches left of where i am looking. They fly generally straight and group they just dont hit where im focusing. Could this be an arrow spine problem or something in my form? On occasion i can get in the groove and hit exactly where i am looking within one inch at 8 or 10 yards but i can never duplicate it more than once. I honestly don't know if i have the right arrows or not, i have some wood arrows cut to 31 and shoot a 35 pound longbow at about 28 or maybe 28.5 inch draw. I know there has to be a solution to this
Great video again. What poundage bow is to light to work on form. I am shooting a 40# bow with a draw of 29 inches, which makes it about 42 or 43 pounds at my draw. Would you get a 30 or 35 pound bow to practice with to work on form?
Have you considered making content which uses foam padded arrowheads for LARP archery? There are a lot of LARP archers out there who would benefit from your expertise
My entire traditional bow hunting etc was based on instinctive shooting. I tried the “ aiming” stuff. The fingers under the arrow stuff and it just wasn’t for me. One thing that I feel gave an edge was I shot a lot. I mean that was what I was- a long bow wooden arrow hunter. For me it was so natural to just draw back while focused 100% on whatever spot and let it fly. There’s no other feeling like it.
@@timbow50 that’s so true and yes aiming is very good for 3D but will never replace instinctive for the purist hunters, I believe aiming is good for a lot of guys but mastering just being able to look and shoot accurately is priceless.
I’m VERY accurate with my 25 lb, but after a year of shooting moved onto the royal x8, and honestly can’t hit anything, I assume I moved up to 40 lbs too fast, hopefully I’ll get adjusted to it over time more
Dear Jeff......following you from Germany for a while and just let me tell you...I love your videos. Thank you for doing them and sharing with us. Every time people ask me where my Anker does lay... I respond: My Anker is feeling my back muscles making this "click". My hand follows my elbow and naturally goes, where it should be for me.
The first two shots the right hand swings out, plucking , whatever, not straight back lol. Hey don't matter as long as you're hitting where you're staring at. Dead on!
Jeff, I watch you shoot and you don’t really hold at anchor it just goes to the same spot. I shoot traditional and I am inconsistent like you mentioned, I will have to try your advice. I know at times my draw is not the same
Yes sir out of everything in archery i believe this is the hardest to get right. None archers just can't see why it's important and so hard to achieve. Man my elbow was way up when i first started archery, then took a course that helped. But a guy who used to live down the street from me really showed me how important shoulder rotation is, and why it makes you anchor more constantly. Unfortunately he moved a few months back. But this just shows how difficult it is. I still struggle with it but getting better. I shoot abit like this guy, I'm not on anchor for long, infact i try to get in a rhythm, the more fast i draw the more accurate i am, i have a time window of about 1 to 2 seconds from draw to release, any longer i over think it and mess up. So now im working on my elbow being perfectly alighned, which at moment im not quit there..
Would you say that arm biology has an effect here? For instance I have T-Rex arms, and it feels as though my rear elbow can’t pull around enough without my anchor needing to be too far back (or my head needing to rotate away from the target to keep my anchor)
I have found a pretty cool way that I know I am in my anchor good, when I am pulling back i pull until my feather on my arrow touches my nose and is in my check good and than I know I am good to shoot

Wonderful video Jeff I think you just gave me alot of insight into one of my shooting problems and why I have inconsistent shooting accuracy thank You so much
Thank you so much!
It’s called proper alignment & getting into your real Anchor which is when your Scapula is set. Your Scapula properly set is your Anchor where the string touches your face are just references. 99.9% of Archers don’t know that!
I just worked on this today and realised why my consistency was off recently. Am now happier after ensuring I engaged my scapula. Great info
Keep practicing your draw Mark & you’ll feel your Scapula set itself for the shot. Ingrain that feeling Mark into your subconscious & eventually when you’re not in proper alignment it will feel wrong & you’ll let down & start over.
Right but if you put your fingers in a different place higher/lower on your face your aim will be diff every shot
So would it be fair to say this is like proper form on a Lat pulldown- where you squeeze the shoulders together?
Hands-down, one of your best videos !
This is a great video! I’m so glad I watched it! I’m going to watch all of your videos now! Keep ‘em coming!
I struggle with this alot. Im getting better but i still have to check myself all the time. And i dont think none archers realise how hard this is, because it is hard, im doing better but not 100%, so this was probably for me the most helpful video youve done. Thankyou and godbless.
Jeff love your channel. You have helped me so much. I try to apply everything that you teach and believe it or not it’s working yay.😊
Thanks for the tip Jeff ❤
Yes!! Yess!! When I shoot like that the arrows just go right to the spot. When I don't it's all over the place
Thank you Jeff! I learn something from all your videos. God bless
gread advice jeff, I appreciate this. I've been stuck on 70 percent for a couple years and I'm slowly chipping away at the hangups.
Thank You! I just applied your advice, and I saw IMMEDIATE improvement/results, all thanks to you!
Awesome!
I love this brother because he's simple and to the point and it's factual
This is awesome information! This video really helped my shooting consistency. Thank you for the explanation in this video.
@@jaybryan9294 thanks so much for watching I’m glad it helped a little!
Great video thanks for sharing ive been battling inconsistent shooting for years ive tried lower poundage different anchors sometimes im right on the money but most of the time i hit a couple perfect the rest hit randomly everywhere
@@crookedwillar thank you so much I really appreciate that!
Thank you Jeff. This is a very important thing. I am so happy. 🎯
@@blackshadowghoster01 thanks brother and dropping down in weight a little will definitely help!
Ah hell nah! My arrows be gone in that long grass! 😂 I need a barn for a back stop! 🤦♂️
I'm going to try this. Thanks mate! 🇦🇺🦘
😂😂😂
Thanks for this. It is helping this new archer
Absolutely!
Early morning 🍿 Out Jeff! About to watch!
Jeff,excellent explanations as usual - fine, thanks,it works 👍
When I used to shoot compound bow competitions I was taught to pull through once I got to my anchor, now that I shoot my recurve I do the same thing and let the release surprise me
Great video Jeff!
Can you cover your hook in one of your future videos?
That may help lots of us.
You are right about bow weight
Excellent vid brother. I noticed you shoot 3 fingers under instead of spilt finger which is what I shoot. I never tried until 3 finger under until this year and it does seem to give a little more power through the draw when I shoot 3 fingers under. What's your take on this method? I've always seen the Bare-bow guys shoot like you do also and they shoot really good. Thanks, Greg
@@GClark-dv4vz 3 under just works better for me being able to subconsciously reference my arrow while drawing and shooting 👍🏻
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks American brother Iaorana from Tahiti

Great video Jeff!
Thanks brother I appreciate that and glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Jeff. God bless you Brother. I’m curious do you ever do seminars?
@@thomaswise1934 actually never have lol
Amazing
What’s your favorite budget recurve bow for target shooting and hunting? I have a compound bow but I got tired of trying to set it up the way I thought I needed and it just simply being more complicated with everything on it. I’ve gave up on bow shooting till watching recurve videos and now I’ve watched a lot of yours and im glad I’ve found you! But what would be the best budget recurve bow for accuracy and hunting ability
@@oledevon The Hermit 10 ILF!
Hi congratulations for this video. What about the release ?
Thanks Jeff!!!
Did you start making bows again? I have one you made and would love to buy another
Thanks Jeff,
Great video!!! Something I was looking for.
Btw, what kind of arrows are you using. I like the look. Can you send a link.
Thanks again

God bless you. Come to ETAR in PA. We ate friendly fokes
Thanks brother!
Excellent video. What quiver do you use?
@@Banpunv I strictly use a Selway strap on model for all my bows just because they’re excellent quality and last for years!
Great video Jeff, what quiver is that you have?
@@danielmcraney9434 thanks! It’s a Selway strap on but I’m running a Gunshy on this bow now because of the short riser 👍🏻
Great video. Is the quiver on your bow a regular size hood or the mini and if a mini will it hold 4 timber shark heads.
It’s a regular 👍🏻
copied that and thanks therefor - do you think the mediterranian grip of the drawhand is that worse ?
@@stefanlindner2348 I’ve shot both and they’re really close to the same exact anchor for me 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 👍😊
I like all bows!
Greetings my friend and thank you so much!
Can’t find Salina hermit x10… only hermit 10 are they the same?
Would you say that arm biology has an effect here? For instance I have T-Rex arms, and it feels as though my rear elbow can’t pull around enough without my anchor needing to be too far back (or my head needing to rotate away from the target to keep my anchor)
I have found a pretty cool way that I know I am in my anchor good, when I am pulling back i pull until my feather on my arrow touches my nose and is in my check good and than I know I am good to shoot
