Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Oct. 5, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- There's so much joy in the sound of the Hammond organ, especially for those of us of a certain age. Hearing it can transport you to the early '70s, when every rock band seemed to have one in its arsenal: The Allman Brothers, Santana, Deep Purple. In the hands of true masters - like the late Billy Preston and the very-much-alive Booker T. Jones - the organ can be a melodic, funky rhythm machine.
Cory Henry's name belongs in the same breath as the Hammond organ masters of the past. The instrument creates the central sound of his dynamic, neo-soul- and funk-infused musical identity, and he opens his turn behind the Tiny Desk with what feels like an encore: the full-on soul assault of "Love Will Find a Way." The song twists and turns, then winds up as a full-on celebration - and it's only the first song in his set.
Henry's keyboard skills are on full display during a synth solo in "Trade It All," which also spotlights his entire band. To my mind, they'd have sounded right at home on Stax Records in the '70s - no small accomplishment. "Send Me a Sign" then showcases some of the roots of Henry's songwriting; it's inspired by church sermons that bloom into group sing-alongs. Just another way Cory Henry digs way back to give us something new and exciting.

you mean to tell me that this guy who killed it with that goddamn solo with that Snarky Puppy live session also sings amazingly? damn damn
Carlo B life isn’t fair
He's pretty hot on the drums too
Check out his performance of Purple Rain with the Metropole Orkest... One of many great performances of him as a vocalist you'll find on YT but in my opinion definitely among the best.
If you like this he does MUCH more than just "that solo with Snarky Puppy..." several live albums with that band (Sylva, groundUP, Family Dinner Vol. 2, more) as well as many amazing live performances with the funk apostles (rooftop, jazz fests, etc.), BBC Proms with Jacob Collier, his own solo albums...
skyvalleybry Exactly! Gotcha now doc & the Revival are great records!
Bass makes every single thing so much better. And this is one mean bassist.
Read my mind!!
Hahaha, I was a few minutes in and couldn’t stop smiling, came to comments to say this was the absolute most bassiest. Living for it.
Sharay has always been an incredible bassist, been a follower of his since he played for CeCe Winans “Throne Room Tour” back in 2004, but since that time especially with Funk Apostles, Sharay Reed has continued to evolve into something other worldly, I mean its unexplainable. He feels the soul, funk, and gospel and just takes it to another planet. Incredible work!
I met him at a concert once, he's actually a very nice bassist.
I love this comment as a bassist
THE BACKGROUND SINGERS ARE KILLING IT!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It sounds -looks like the sister w long hair is singing low harmony.. love underneath the higher backing voice
Indeed, they are so in tune their voices mix together, It’s amazing
Right! Sheesh. Fantastic job ladies
Incredible the 2nd keyboard player, love his groove
Cory's Law: His musicality doubles roughly every 18 months.
no...he just reveals more of himself every 18 months.
Just as Moore's law hahaha. Cory must be studied by Intel and AMD :D
@@b3at2 he's definitely improving though
The only difference is somehow this law doesn't have a limit, this dude just keeps going like Dave Weckl and Chick Corea
@@musicdev hiromi is the limit. ask chick or watch this /watch?v=yGaZ9r0p9wk&list=RDyGaZ9r0p9wk&start_radio=1
i prefer her in a trio, but its corona-times^^
This fucking bassist, man. How much in-the-pocket groove does it take to outshine the world's foremost and funkiest organ player?
This much. Good god. He is *killing* it. It's obscene.
I'm FAIRLY sure that's Sharay Reed. Give his name a search and get ready w some popcorn or something
if you haven't seen the joy to the world video wyd
interstellish sharay reed is too good man. i’ve seen them live twice, he always kills it
OBSCENE IS THE WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS WHOLE CONCERT
Cold chills with his bass lines! The guitarist complements the bassist as well. Teamwork makes the dream work
Do you ever feel like everything sounds like 100% cooler during Tiny Desks?????
I’m in love with this album! Go listen people!
The Bass player is a straight beast!!!!
Sharay Reed my brother
I feel for that drummer- killer groove coming from the bass, the Hammond commands the funk and he has to play like he'll get in trouble for waking up the house......... real deal if you are funky AND quiet...
The guitarist doesn't get enough love. Laying down the background grove like a boss
Baddest organ player in this generation! He's a monster!!!
AtRest 2k second that big time
Delvon Lamar organ trio
Holy moly this is the shit
Yes... but there are many others who come very close. Lachy Doley is one example, check out two minutes of soft/loud Hammond solo bliss here: ua-cam.com/video/u2MgWM-rIOg/v-deo.html Of course the rest of the show is amazing too :)
Stephen Bell I’ve been a fan of Lachy’s for a long time. Used to live in Sydney and was able to see in many an intimate setting. I hit him up for lessons years ago and he said yes though we never made it happen.
The whole band is killing and it goes without saying that Corey is beyond gifted....but....THAT SHARAY REED is back there killlllling!
You guys should really start crediting all of the musicians (not only the featured ones) in the descriptions for these videos, not only because it's deserved but because a lot of us would like to find out more about many of them & what other projects they're involved with. You're welcome for the long run-on sentence.
Pu
Whoops I meant this and the Christmas one are the greatest tiny desks
Bass is Sharay Reed and in my opinion is top 5 best musicians and top 4 Bass Players..
They the Funk Apostles
For all intents and purposes 🤷🏾♂️
@@jej495 he top 2 for me personally
And TaRon my new favorite drummer
Mans be going crazy
Cory is a monster. One thing I'm loving is how the drummer is truly keeping a lid on it for the 'venue'.
The guitarist and the bassist are total badasses. Hell, they are all badasses.
Sharay Reed on bass, Adam Agati - guitar
@@ransomqhouhx7 i was looking for the guitar player name, thank you
I want to MonoNeon on the bass...he is incredible
Thenewjazz Sharay fits this perfect bro
@@blanquis1824 yeah Mono is incredible. Sharay’s amazing as well!
11:50 Cory is like the mad professor of music. What a time to be alive to witness this kind of greatness.
From that moment through when the girls come back in, makes me WEEP, there's something so visceral and purely joyful about this that hits me so hard. Absolutely phenomenal performance.
I was about to jump out of my chair and start clapping after that synth solo, and then I realized I was sitting at home in my living room. The music is really moving and Cory is amazing.
I totally get that.
i would go to this church for sure.
This man is oozing with so much talent and charisma that it's not even funny. He is a truly gifted individual.
Ridonk!
The way the guitarist accompanies the band is amazing.
Josh Rogosin for President 2020.. He's the phenomenal sound engineer who IMHO makes this amazing concert series possible. Most sound engineers would have a breakdown when presented with the complexities that these types of concerts present sound-wise. You can tell he loves every minute of it when he nails it every single time. Hats off to you, Sir.
Ok I'm gonna preach on it. How do you take an office setup like this and make it sound like it was studio recorded? I do believe the man took over Robert Johnson's contract...
Cory Henry is this generations Cory Henry. I think thats what time travel feels like. 23 mins flew right by damn!!!
He has such a short practical singing range though. He cannot even pull off the low notes he included. And he cannot belt out in his main working octave - only on his high notes. The music is repetitive and gets boring quickly because of the poor lyrical writing.
And that studio needs to invest in an extra plug-in A/C unit cause the band is swimming in sweat :P
@@TheOriginalEntz his keyboard playing is godly. I would condider hiim the best and after his solo on "lingus" I was inspired more than I have ever been. His singing lacks I agree but as a musician, he is second to none
Joesdf Joesdfg You not gon understand the funk unless you in person. There’s a lot you can do even with a limited vocal range.
Victory Sampson ...only somebody so shorted minded and negative (and without a serious músical knowledge) would start a criticism based on a vocal short range. As you pointed out, a brief but careful dive into the style would clarify the “considerations stated by Joesdf.
Joesdf Joesdfg doesn’t matter if he couldn’t sing at all (he did a fine job though and i thought it fit the style nicely), just for his keyboard playing alone he’s a once in a lifetime artist. he should and will go down as one of the musical geniuses of our time.
The band chemistry is on another level!
The female back ups are wicked. Good to hear the Hammond in full effect ! Greatest sound that has ever been created!
Denise and Tiffany are God's gift to background singing!
Keith Jackson you are joking are you????
Thanks for telling us who they are. I thought the one on the left was George Clinton's grand-daughter, Patavian Lewis. They have the same body language (e.g. hand gestures, dance-in-place movement, etc.) and vocal register :-)
Ok. Thx for the hint.
I was guessing that was Tiffany Stevenson on the left.
Saw them live, it was one of the best experience I ever lived
I was at Wolf Trap for Live from Here on Memorial Day weekend, and Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles were one of the guests. No one there, myself included, seemed to know what we were in for but he brought the house down. Post broadcast encore performance with Cory Henry and Chris Thile jam session set the place ablaze.
1. The synth solo starting at 9:35
2. The flat-out Nana GROOVE with Nick’s chords
I have to go kick something now!
J. Robby Smith omg right!!
that's exactly what I was thinking!
J Smith: couldn’t of said it better myself!
reminds me of animal crossing
Ridiculous
12:53 Sharay Reed face represents me every single time i listen to this beautiful band
That bass sound is reeeeaaaally tight..damn, love it!
I love Cory, you can just feel the genuine positive energy coming from him
Besides Cory Henry, Sharay Reed (bass); Nick Semrad (aux keys); TaRon Lockett (drums); Adam Agati (guitar); Tiffany Stevenson (BGV on left); Denise Renee (BGV on right)
how they just leave that out?
Sharay is a phenomenal gospel player. Cory equally so. We are so lucky to have this talent in our midst.
Mark Simmons Lee Bakker
o boys
they just the iceberg tip, they the most mainstream but there are sooo many more
Sharay Reed is probably one of my fav bassists atm
Merci
cory henry is a blessing on this earth
It's so nice to know that I can set my EQ flat when listening to Tiny Desk. Thank you, Josh Rogosin.
So nice to see cory henry evolve. he's fully embracing singing now and he's nailing it
This is the first time I've listened to a Tiny Desk Concert the whole way through, got to the end, and immediately hit replay. I need to hear it again. I can't promise I won't go for three in a row.
Thanks to the audio engineer.
This sounds amazing!
All I can imagine rn is the PRESSURE the drummer is under lol, keeping that timing and still adding nits and bits everywhere flawlessly. Still Cory Henry never ceases to amaze me...
First heard of him with Lingus, then with Billie Jean, then with Stayin’ Alive, I thought I was already amazed enough... Now THIS!?
Man oh mannnn. What a beautiful soul!
Set List:
"Love Will Find a Way" (0:00)
"Trade It All" (6:33)
"Send Me A Sign" (14:00)
Lifesaver
Have you ever liked a video before watching it because you knew it’d be amazing? This was one of those videos.
I saw this guy live with Snarky Puppy in Paris. He's clearly the best musician that I've ever heard.
That is, without a doubt, the chillest drummer I've ever seen.
I've watched corey henry from the sidelines for years. I'm glad to see him take off as a musician and singer.
Cory Henry had me "na na na"ing alone in my room just because his soul is so beautiful and his music is that powerful.
Someone give this bassist a raise!
What the hell? Didn't know Cory Henry could sing! And sing so good!
The LEGEND Sharay Reed!🙏🏿 Chops are on 🔥🔥!! #CoryHenryAndTheFunkApostles
Finally, I already know this will be the most underrated NPR Session.
GOAT for this era and generation. Cory Henry has tapped into the music heavens. Timeless sound.
Who are the 102 philistines who don't like this!!?? I'm of a certain generation that remembers the original 'funk' - every last one of these musicians is fantastic and a credit to the genre!!
''Music is a language in which we all can understand'', that was a beautiful message.
Sharay Reed laying down the groove on bass
Man that keys solo. I had to stop what I was doing, switch over to the video, and just watch. Oh my god.
I am so proud of Cory. I have all of his recordings and have watched him for years on UA-cam playing with Snarky Puppy, BBC specials and in various churches. This man is so incredibly talented. His voice is perfect, raspy and raw - exactly what is needed for his music. In the days of auto-tune, it is absolutely refreshing to hear singers sing and hear instruments played.
When Henry puts his fingers down, its life's church
The whole set is amazing, but Sharay Reed is putting on a clinic. If one of my kids ever want to play bass, I'm going to sit them in front of this, and say "that's how you do it."
His muting technique is just SO fluid.
Justin Whitaker he was most certainly slapping. Allll the way in the cut. Funky like Bootsy
Thundercat too
Right up there with the best bass players of all time!
Definitely agree! I would say the same about Cornell Williams, bassist for Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
Nicks chord placement when they’re saying na na na.. bro it’s too sweet
Lord, that bass and organ...🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Oh my gosh, this music absolutely ENERGIZES me! :D What an awesome vibe to wake up to!
Dats rite Guitar Dude!!!!!!!
11:26 that “YEAH” is the perfect end for an insane impro line
How have I been living without this music my whole life? I feel like I am seeing new colours
Some of us may have to endure hardness like a good soldier. It's good to pray, play and sing no matter what! Thanks Funk Apostles!🤗❤️
I've seen Cory Henry twice, his showmanship and musicianship is commendable. Easily the best concerts I've been to in my life, he engages the audience like no other, everyone in the room gives him their full attention and you can feel it in the air. Great performance Funk Apostles!
The bassist is just too good mature gig and big shout to the two lady's love their dancing steps so amazing
Pretty sure that's Sharay Reed on the bass, he really is a legend.
@@tymtrppr3 Yesssss
@8:18 Corey's, "LIIIIIIIIIFE'S a mystery" omfg amazing feel
those backup singers... my God!
Did not know the brother could sing like that!
Sharay Reed on bass That's insane enough. And Nick semrad on keys go check out his cover of (I surrender all) rendition that boy is bad.
AMEN TO THAT!!
Monster musician
I'm glad somebody recognized. THAT dude is a Mega Monster on the bass!
I was looking for the bassist name, you said Sharay Reed and I was like 'figures, sure, why not?' Damn he is a beast!
Sharay at 13:00 = seismic
Faith in action - This is a gift 🙏 - big love and celebration to the entire collective. This is a proud moment and how I wish we can appreciate the legends that these souls are in the present - if YOU reading this - I send you love.
Whoa . . . when Cory chomps on that B3 there is just simply NOTHIN like it! LOVE the girls in backups and the musicians are RIGHT there!
yo. I'm speechless. That was an experience. You have done it again NPR. Over 10 years ago I realized how great NPR was and since then I have not been disappointed. Thank you so much.
I fall in love with him after heard lingus... I listened dat solo thousands time 😋 Happy to see you here :) what a monster Holly Molly 🤯🎼🎵🎶🎙️🎹
Seems as if we went on the same Cory Journey
Rei Cejiru, Cory is a monster on "Big Ugly" with Snarky Puupy.
@@shaymeyers2542 gonna check it right now! :D ty 🎶🔊
The only downside of that mind-blowing Lingus solo is that every time I watch/listen to something else he's played, I'm always expecting the same. He's always great, but the bar is now set so high...
The lord directly speaks through him and his music! I get goose bumps everytime i hear this record.
Wow, the ‘Trade it All’ solo transcended all time and space 🤯
Cory Henry & Anderson Paak collab please!
What a band! This is one of the most powerful tiny desks concerts out there! Thanks!
Those gurls can SAAAANG!!
Every soul that opens npr’s page has entered heaven really
Loudest claps and shouts I heard from the crew in a while!
Those backing vocals give me goosebumps
Superb!
The modulation at the end of the last song takes me back even though the song says “I don’t wanna go back” it takes me waaay back to New Light MBC in Berkeley Ca circa 1983-ish. 👏🏾 bravo
Damn, Cory and the Funk Apostles are brining me to JESUS!
Just like lambchop's this is the song that doesn't end, I have nananananananana na na nanananana stuck in my head all day! Thanks for the good vibes!!
I aint even Christian and now I feel like I wanna go to church my god
Do it
It was long overdue, but alas! Cory is love, Cory is life.
Imagine every office could jam like this on a Monday to start the week.
Sharay Reed on bass yo!
that dude is straight killing that bass.
I want to MonoNeon...he is better...in the world
Straight killer on the bass
Thenewjazz much respect to mono neon but man, have you seen Sharay doing Joy To The World?!?
Tightest basslines and vocals by far! Soul Music with a capital S! And Denise... I could stare at you forever!👀
TINY DESK YOU ALWAYS COME THROUGH
Sharay Reed is an Animal on the Bass!!
I will sing the “Happy Song” for the rest of my life that’s a promise. 🙌🏾🙏🏾✊🏾
Two words...
Nick. Semrad. 🙌🏽
Cory is the master of the Hammond, Jordan the master of the Kronos, and Nick is easily the master of the Prophet.
@@Markipelago 😂😂😂🤦♀️
He is just so fine....his work here and with Snarky Puppy is just superb!!
dang! been looking for the funkiest Tiny Desk Concert ever. This and The Roots feat. Bilal are hard to beat.
What a way to start my weekend👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Just Great music!,!greetings from Amsterdam
Wow, incredible music, I especially like the gospel feel on 'Send me a Sign.' But let's give a shout out to Denise and Tiffany for back-up vocals. Those ladies nail it!
Got a picture with Taron Lockett when I went to see Cory's Revival project show a few years back and seeing this now I'm so glad I have that for posterity ^_^ it just sits on my phone and I get reminded of a mind-blowing night of music once in a while
Adam Agati on guitar, Sharay Reed on bass...just the groovest Cory could get! Can't get enough of this!!!
Cory Henry and Vulfpeck @ Red Rocks in May!!!!!!
James Dwyer Gonna be a good one!!!
So far, simply the best happiness and wao feelings from a tiny desk concert... and maybe I'm wrong, or have not seen everything yet... but Cory and the Funk Apostles are simply the best. Love you guys. Make me sing every time for weeks :-)
I love the understated and controlled drums on "Love will find a way". He had him pulled way and you didn't even notice - it just fit perfectly. Nice teamwork here.
Wait, he sings so freaking well too? Oh my, perfection
