    The French see the work week as an interruption to the weekend. North Americans see the weekend as a break from the work week. In this travel vlog I dive into what small town France has taught me, not just about French culture but also about myself.
    I hike up to the Fort of Bastille in Grenoble, France. A 260 meter challenge that taxes my body but opens my mind. I've lived in France for 3 weeks now and created a few vlogs about my experiences and thoughts on travel. This vlog is much more in depth about me and what I've learned about French Culture.
    As these travel vlogs continue I intend to go deeper into my personal and cultural experience. I hope to bring you more stories on everything interesting about each culture I discover. Subscribe to see my nomadic/living abroad journey.

    Amen to work as an interruption. I cannot wait until we get to start working around travel in 2025 and beyond. Subed to learn more from you and to support your channel and journey in life. I really cannot wait to experience this on our drive around the World. As anthropologists and world citizens, we love when people include cultural heritage in the content. Good on you. I hope you keep it up and find some joy from our vlogs as well. Turtle and Bear

    Smaller cities (or towns close to big cities) are always better than living in a big city imo. At least that's my experience in the multiple countries I've visited, as you said in a past video you might not be as entertained but the tranquility, charm and people's friendliness you find in those smaller cities is worth more than that imo.

    • @gofortheunknown
      @gofortheunknown  Рік тому +1

      Definitely, the friendliness is definitely important when travelling as well. Makes like just that little bit easier. I do enjoy big cities for the entertainment but the small cities for the culture and immersion!

      Actually the scale for cities is different in France. A place like Grenoble is considered as a big city already (any city over 100,000 inhabitants is). And you rightly caught that: there is Paris/Parisian Region (almost one fifth of the entire French population) and there is the "real" France, two different worlds.
      I loved your humoristic comment about the work week being an interruption of the week end. And, about this "work to live" vs "live to work" culture, do you know that the French have been rated among the most efficient people when at work? This is due to the better private vs professional life balance, which allows relaxation and distancing from work, and eliminates useless stress, and in turn makes people more productive when working as they are more rested and mentally available. We naturally have our own workaholics but quite frankly that's not a widespread illness.

    • @gofortheunknown
      @gofortheunknown  Рік тому

      @@jfrancobelge The efficiency thing is quite interesting. Instead of work hard, play hard it’s a work smarter not harder mentality. No wonder there was always so many people out and about during the week!

    First of all I am very happy that you chose Grenoble as one of your destinations, you could have gone to a different small town in France. I noticed that you did not say anything about French food, whereas on the other hand you praise German food (actually I am German, so it is actually nothing special for me). I really enjoyed the French cuisine in its variety and above all for its quality. The "plat du jour" is the best to know it, because usually it is offered for a fair price and it is very well prepared. The "plat du jour" is only offered during weekdays, so on the weekend one only gets the more pricy menus, but with more choice. (may be there is less street food in Grenoble than in Germany). In Grenoble in particular I loved the large variety of fresh salads with the excellent French dressing, which one can get virtually at any corner. One of my favorite is "Chevre chaud" a salad with goat cheese warmed up topped on fresh salad leaves also with tomatos ..... Apart from the salads there are some classics in the local cuisine of Grenoble, that is the "gratin Dauphinois" or the "tartiflette". When you go on the market --- my favorite was "L'estacade" one can buy so many local products, in particular French cheese, the best cheese is made with raw milk and for the Grenoble area the most famous ones are Saint Marcellin or Saint Felicien.
    With curiousity I heard that you found the Grenoble's tram system complicated. Actually there are much less lines than in Leipzig and in 2022 -- the last time I visited Grenoble -- I did not need an app to use the tram.
    Last remark: Grenoble is a science city, so many foreign scientist come and work in Grenoble, which makes that the town is rather open and friendly --- yes a big difference to Paris. But speaking French in Paris changes a lot the attitude the people treat you.

    I want to thank you for your videos. They are interesting. I enjoy your enthusiasm and energy that you bring to your videos.
    It's a difficult niche that you are in: travel adventure. I want you to be a big success in the space. I'll continue to watch your videos. I'd like to make one suggestion that may improve your views per video.
    I notice that many channels will have a stationery, host with audience section. This is where they discuss what the video is about, what will happen and what motivated the host to make this particular video.
    They'll then show the part of the city they were talking about, or the restaurant or whatever it is. Then they'll have another solo host session, then more video.
    I think that may be a good thing for you to do.I enjoy you walking around filming.
    A channel that does their videos this way is called beneath the surface. They get hundreds of thousands of views and it's just a man and his wife traveling in France.
    I will continue to watch your videos. There's a ton of potential that you bring to youtube.
    I wish you the best and thank you for your videos and channel.

    Work is not a secondary thought in France; it's just on a level plane with family life and a way to afford enough money to enjoy life outside of work.
