  • Living abroad in Croatia was never something I expected but is definitely something I appreciate. Croatia is a stark contrast from the last two countries I lived in for a month. It's warm, cheap, full of unique food and has beautiful vistas! In this travel vlog I discuss why I chose Split, Croatia and what I plan to do while I'm here! Also a special someone makes her first appearance in this one!
    I thought Croatia would just be another country on my journey. A way to save some money, experience a different culture and go somewhere that had tons of great recommendations. I was wrong. After only a couple days I can see it has so much more to offer. Split is a thriving community with tons of back alleys, boardwalks and loads of friendly people.
    This is my third living abroad vlog and in some ways it feels like I've been doing it my whole life. In other ways it feels like I'm just getting started. Living abroad and traveling the world is an experience I only dreamed of a few years ago but now it's a reality I never want to end! This month I'll be bringing you more stories on Croatia and about how I found myself living this dream. Subscribe to see my nomadic/living abroad journey.

    Finally, Jessica! She touches the water to check the temperature;) It would be great if you could show what you are seeing ( the sights). When traveling it’s super helpful to ask any hotel personal from any hotel for good spots to eat locally, usually someone will speak English there and use google maps to find stuff too the night before so you can get there quick and can wander once you get there. Looking forward to seeing more of Croatia❤

      Don’t worry I have lots more to show about Croatia already! I usually try to just show my first impressions and have the first video as more of an introduction. Glad you enjoyed meeting Jessica you’ll see her popping in more and more 😁

    Glad you had a nice time in Split, and yeah Split is warm. But I'd recommend exploring Croatia further than its coast. Because if you drive just an hour or two inland, in the area of Gorski Kotar or Plitvice, you'll find these places packed with snow and temps below zero at this time of the year. Further inland in Zagorje you'll find lots of great vineyards, or up the coast in Istia - cheese, vine and truffles, all locally produced. And as to 'cheap', guess you haven't yet visited Hvar or Dubrovnik ;)

      Both Hvar and Dubrovnik are on my list hope it not too expensive. I’m renting a car tomorrow to explore some of the smaller towns deeper in but I’m not going to stray too far from the coast, I’m enjoying the warmth because I’ve been missing it these last 4 months haha. I definitely want to explore more of the interior of Croatia in the summer!

    As a Croat ( living in Whitby ON), I can give you a tip on the language. If you know how to read certain letters (I's are pronounced as E's, J's are pronounced as Y's). So technically, Split is supposed to be pronounced as "spleet" but either are accepted😊. And btw my husband and I are on the same page as you. We want to move ( to Croatia) because we don't want to have a boring life where we just work to live and get too old to do anything later on. Kudos!

      That’s so helpful, I’ve started to just call it split because then I just got in with every other tourist. 😂 It is one of the most beautiful and friendly places I’ve ever been and the cost of living makes it so much easier to have fun!

      I think you should be quite careful about the cities you pick, some cities can get quite old, quite quickly. Having something like a beach helps quite a bit though!

    Exploring unknown places far and near is fun. Regarding the cost of living, it's completely subjective. I lived in one of the most expensive countries most my life, everwyere I travel and stay is an economic paradise, while quality and worth is another matter. The purpose of travelling is not comparing. It's the total immersion into totally different lifestyle and values. Appreciating the natural beauty is the top priority of my world exploration. The rest doesn't bother me much.

    Bosnia? See Mostar...
    Cetina river source/spring is like an eye of the planet. Icecold, beautiful and worth a visit in the middle of nowhere.
    Zadar and Trogir are not far away.
    Include a sunset in Zadar by the sea organ. It is known to be the most beautiful in the entire World.
    Pula in Istria/Istra has a Collosseum as impressive as the Flavian Amphitheatre (The Collosseum) in Rome.
    Eat truffles in dishes in Croatia. They are local from Istra and cheap. You will feel like a king. ^^
    Eat a black risotto.
    Eat some local cured smoked ham. pršut
    If you can...visit Biševo Island.
    Ston/Mali Ston on the peninsula of Pelješac, Korčula Island...eat Makarule with veal sauce there.
    The delta of the river Neretva is also worth seeing...it's fruit heaven.
    THE most local thing to do by the sea is playing picigin.
    Here is what it looks like: ua-cam.com/video/lhy7BqZqHw8/v-deo.html
    The video is actually from a beach in Split.
    Basically. Small ball in the air not allowed to touch the "ground".
    You play it in shallow waters in summer on a sandy beach with friends.
    Goal is obvious, but to hit the ball in the most spectacular way is another one. It's just so much fu-hun...🙂
    š=sh
    č=ch as in Chuck
    ć=ch as in cheese
    the tricky ones:
    Đ/đ = pretty much like the J in Django, but the D is not silent...;-)
    Ž/ž = pretty much like the Je in Je t'aime...from French.
    A letter c is like in English the ts sound in bits.
    The rest is pronounced (with the Croatian way of pronouncing the letters ofc) as you read it.
    Now you can read Croatian. 🙂

      This is the most helpful comment I’ve ever had, thank you so much. I loved watching picigin. Thanks for letting me know what it’s called and the rules because I had no idea what I was watching. I’m definitely thinking of going to Bosnia at some point in the future. I tried when I was in split but renting a car to cross the border was way too expensive. I tried a few of these things but I’m putting the rest on a list because Croatia is probably the first place I’d go back to. It was one of my favourite countries for sureeee!!!

    Top 5 things on my list:
    1. Hike up Maryan Hill
    2. Wander through Diocletian’s Palace
    3. Take a ferry for the day to Trogir
    4. Go to Kvar National Park
    5. Embrace Croatia! Our favourite destination!

      Where did you found "Kvar" National park? There is "Krka" national park but not "Kvar!" Maybe you meant "Hvar" but Hvar is just an island, not a national park.
      By the way "kvar" in Croatian language literally means "malfunction!"
