Every area has advantages and inconvenients, and people can have different perceptions of the same place, so please tell me what areas of Paris you know, and if you would recommend them or not !

Incredible video, one of the most useful pieces of content I have seen about Paris! thank you so much, you are a life saver and i love the way you went into detail about the streets and everything!
Would love to see one where you talk about how to get access to services as a foreigner in Paris (eg Bank Account, Phone Number when you have temporary accomodation and also maybe another one about the best ways to find accomodation etc! )

As far as getting accesses to services, I'll see if I can create a good video on that, but I'd say in the mean time that @DamonDominique 's videos are a great starting point. I also have a video on how to apartment hunt in Paris so I hope that will give you some insight!

When we first moved to Paris I had to have a French bank account to rent somewhere, and an estate agent told me to apply for an HSBC international account from HSBC Paris - it was great advice, you can apply for the account online, you don't need to have a French address and it only took a few days to set up. Once we had a Paris address, we ended up switching to SocGen for various reasons, but I still have the HSBC account

This was so immensely helpful! The last time I stayed in Paris, I stayed with my host mom's dad, Papé, and he lived in the 16th, two blocks away from Place Victor Hugo. I studied in Lyon and on my last 15 days, I decided to spend it in Paris. It was already my 2nd time since I visited after secondary school but I was so young and clueless back then that I didn't get to fully enjoy the city. But I had no clue the 16th is the most expensive Arrondissement at that time, but it all makes sense now. He lived in a penthouse and his apartment had old paintings and was really posh. I stayed in an apt at the same building on the 1st floor and had my own space and privacy. He'll just give me a call to invite for dinner. The stores were expensive but it was so quiet and safe that it felt like a nice neighbourhood to raise a family. He even mentioned a building nearby that was owned by one of the Princes of Saudi Arabia so nonchalantly haha I just loved how close I was to the metro and close enough to a lot of the sights. I spent a lot of time around Ile Saint-Louis and the Marais.
I miss Paris and have def thought about moving there. The urge is getting stronger every year. My friend moving there to teach English def is not helping me refraining from moving lol

Truly, your video is the first of its kind, at least that I have ever seen. Plus, the use of maps, videos, essential landmarks was superb! I have been to Paris many times, but did not really get to understand several of the arrondissements, esp for living. I just subscribed to your channel. I will be interested to see whether you focus on a few arrondissements in particular for living - and for living just outside of Paris where a friend of mine opted to do. She is very short commute to the Marais and I actually grew to appreciate her area (I think in or near Bois de Vincennes). Anyway, superb video!

Great overview and great touch showing each arrondissement on the map for reference. We are coming as a family and the 14th does attract me due to its safety, less touristy yet looks like you can easily see other parts of the city via metro. It also has many parks and close enough to Luxembourg Park.
I love the look of the 7th but it makes sense to know why accommodation options are limited there as it’s predominantly where governments have their headquarters, etc.

Both the 7th and the 14th (though to a lesser extent) are like super dupper rich and expensive si I don't really recommand it if you don't have to money to back it up. And it's also gonna be less lively and more... bourgeois really.

Purely out of love for a fellow language learner; the word 'lively' has a long sound where the 'i' is, just like in 'alive'. Thank you for putting this video together! I'm moving to Paris soon and this just helped me narrow down the arrondissement that I would like to live in. I was so concerned about safety cause I have heard about pickpocketers a lot and being a foreign student, the worst nightmare is getting pickpocketed and not having documents lol.
I had a question though, is the Nanterre and Rueil Malmaison area good?

    • @claraontheroad3049
      @claraontheroad3049  3 роки тому +1

You're welcome, I'm glad this video was helpful to you! Just to let you know, pickpockets are never after your documents etc, when people get their documents stolen it's either because they were in their wallets or the thief stole the whole bag, both can be easily avoided! Honestly the thing that's mostly pick pocketed are phones, and while some areas are more prone to that than others, you gotta be careful anytime you're in the public transports anyway.
Rueil Malmaison is a pretty cute city from what I heard, quite green and family oriented, seems very safe, the only big issue is that it's not that well connected in terms of public transport, so it can take a while to go to Paris or basically be impossible in case of snow/construction work/strikes.
Nanterre is a very big city, and as such it's a very mixed bag in terms of neighborhoods. I've heard parts of the city aren't so safe, it's not bad overall though, just seems to vary quite a bit. It was a couple of RER stations, downtown has quite a lot to do since there is a university and again it's a pretty big town for the suburbs.

I'd say rue de Bagnolet seems very lively and with lots to do, you're very close to the gorgeous Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise, you have La Cite Aubry, a lot of little streets with history. It's not fancy but I think it's nice. Just avoid being too close of Porte de Bagnolet, it gets a lot louder, dirtier, and generally unpleasant to live

If I can make another observation - I am American, so like most, I feel free to “suggest” to complete strangers. Lol. I just wanted to say that from the videos of yours that I have seen, they have tremendous substance and value. You should have even more subscribers than you do - maybe that comes down to your “marketing.” It came on my radar because of your Paris and French videos. While I am hetero, I found your video on French vs US dating to be very interesting and seemingly cross-sexual identity. Anyway, good luck building your subscriber base. Americans are a really segmented marketing audience, at least in my age group, as you probably know. I do look forward to seeing more videos from you on Paris and wish you much success!

Hi Clara, thanks for this superb video! Fantastic breakdown and exactly what I was looking for.
I have a favour/question to ask. I'm doing a Master's at Sciences Po in the fall, and I've been researching where to live. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 seem quite expensive and touristy. I've narrowed it down to the 5th or 11th. The 11th looks more central, hip, and vibrant, but I'm leaning towards the 5th, because if I can find a place in western section of the 5th, it would significantly cut my commuting time to and from class. And it's still relatively central.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Is the 5th a good choice if you're studying at Sciences Po? Or any other areas I should consider?
Any advice is much appreciated, and thanks again for your excellent content! :)
    Graham
    Vancouver, Canada
PS. Saw in another vid that you also went to Sciences Po! I'll be at the School of Public Affairs. Did you have any favourite profs?

    • @claraontheroad3049
      @claraontheroad3049  3 роки тому +1

Hi! The 5th is a great arrondissement for Sciences Po, but it's still pretty central, old and prestigious, and touristy, so that's kinda like the 6th, fairly expensive, especially the West but if you find a good deal there I'd recommend it! The 11th should be a bit cheaper, more hip yeah, but both have significant student populations so can be pretty vibrant.
I'd say you might also want to consider the North East of the 15th (around montparnasse) and the North of the 14th (that's where I live and I'm 30 minutes away by walk and 15 minutes away by public transport from Sciences Po). You could also consider going further along the metro lines 4, 12 and 9 (those are the ones which stop near Sciences Po) but it sounds like you want to be as close as possible.
And yeah I was at Sciences Po, in the school of Public Affairs too! If you want to DM me for teachers recommendations etc I'm @clara_ontheroad on Instagram

Me and my girlfriend planned on traveling to paris this new year. Tickets are booked, but now hotels have to be picked. We found one in the northern part of the 10th district and I wondered if it's safe there. I read some articles where it is strictly said that u should avoid the 19th and 18th district, but since 200 Rue La Fayette is in the northern part of the 10th district I wondered if there might be some concerns abt our safety etc..We are both city kids from munich and know

Hi! So As I say in the video I don't even think all of the 18th and 19th should be avoided haha. But as far as 200 Rue Lafayette goes, it seems like you would be in an area that's not very posh, not really rich, could be a bit messy, but also pretty lively and young! Basically you're close to some trendy young places but also some somewhat shady corners. Nothing super unsafe, but be cautious getting home late at night

    • @claraontheroad3049

If you want to be very central to easily visit sites by foot, be close to touristic locations, and have just a lot going on close by, all of these arrondissements are very good indeed! maybe less so the 8th, but 3rd 4th 5th 6th for sure. You can also include the east of the 7th, bordering the 6th. In terms of safety, those are all safe except for petty crimes like phone theft, especially in the metro, and cat calling, but those are things you can't avoid anywhere in Paris.
Also definitely do explore Paris outside of those main Central sites, it will be a blast!

I have only been to Paris once and didn't have time to do a lot of research on where it is safe and where it isn't. I wanted to be near Montmarte and Sacre Couer and stayed in the 18 Arrondissment (southern part) I felt quite safe and was even on the streets alone to go to buy food in wee hours of the morning. I didn't dilly dally and I was safe enough. I did notice though that there are pockets of men, presumably recent immigrants hanging around in various places. I tried to avoid these clusters if only to avoid heckling. I travelled with a young family member who was told by someone he knows who now lives in Paris that she would not come to the neighbourhood because it wasn't safe. So he had to go and meet her somewhere else. I think as long as you don't go into obvious shady areas and you keep eyes and ears open you can be fine. One has to take precautions no matter where they live or visit. Even though I took great care I was robbed at one of the train stations (I forget the name) where I transferred to get to the Eiffel Tower. Fortunately I got everything back which is a real blessing. I appreciated your video and am saving it should I get the chance to visit beautiful Paris again one day.

Thank you for your comment! The part of Paris you're describing can be intimidating to some people but is actually decently safe, as you say, and those group of men aren't much danger at all usually (though as a woman I understand avoiding groups of men when you're walking at night in general).
I'm glad you got everything back after being robbed,I hope that wasn't violent or anything! I know the most criminality I've encountered in Paris is street harassment and people trying to (and sometimes succeeding) steal my phone...

But I'd say that the 6th is super quintessentially Paris so looks very fun to live in, so does the 3rd and most of the 11th. Also the North of the 20th around Buttes Chaumont has my heart haha.
