i would've put sharon v phiphi under "i guess we need one" cause they needed to keep them both after willam's disqualification. although i guess the argument could also be made that they knew about willam's rulebreaking and could have disqualified her at any point, so they chose that lip sync to do the double save. but if they were going to disqualify willam, they still needed one double save at some point, so i think the point stands. plus that episode's untucked was the one where phiphi was *reallyyyy* railing into willam about breaking the rules.

I think when it comes to Eureka v Jaida, it falls more into the “I guess we need 1” category. This was the last lipsync before the finale, so I feel like Eureka had to win to get the cash tip, but at the same time, Jaida couldn’t lose because she won Season 12 and her losing would damage her reputation a bit. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong.

Yvie vs Brooke was perfect because the song was literally a one up song, which they both embodied and executed it perfectly, you could also put as "bestie" because they worked with the song and each other so well. And this song was perfect for well coordinated stunts and I don't think any other queen could do so well as they did.

Yeah, she did. I think Scarlett was still really good, some people are really diminishing how good she did because we saw riggory towards her twice now.
I would absolutely put Manila vs Monet in "I guess we need 1" though, because there were only four eliminated queens to come back for Lalaparuza and so they needed a reason to give them both immunity.
I kinda don’t understand the push Scarlett Harlett gets. She’s a fierce queen, but I don’t see her as outstanding as she is praised by the judges to be. Charity or Choriza should have been high in the first week, Scarlett should have been in the Bottom 3 instead of Vanity and Charity deserved the win Scarlett got. I can see the Double Shantay though, on the first watch I thought “Wow, Charity might send Scarlett home”, but on a couple of rewatches I noticed that Scarlett really gave a cute performance. However, I think Scarlett gets pushed too much. Queens like Charity really fall under the radar because of that. UPDATE after episode 5: Charity has been officially fucked over😑😑😑😑
SERIOUSLY! Charity is extremely glossed over, on first watch of BDE I 100% thought she would place high/win. How was krystal safe with those bland ass lyrics and Charity is in the bottom for a look the judges called art and lyrics that were ‘too raunchy’ (??!?!?) but good? The judges are definitely not considering Charity as competition when she is yvie oddly level!
Well one could argue Charity's outfit she made for the design challenge is not finished. While Scarlett's gown was really well made. I think River had a better chance at winning the challenge
Some T to the Angele vs Kana lipsync: - Kana had just returned (after being eliminated after being 3 times in the bottom, so this is was her 4th one.) - She made a rlly long speech about wanting Angele to stay because she was doing a better job (Kana had no wins, Angele had 6!!!) - The judges and Angele encouraged her to "fight" for her life, and she servedan amazing performance, just like Angele. After that, they both made it to the grand finale.
A double save needs to be warranted. Both queens have to be so damn good that you just can't pick a winner and sending someone home would seem like a crime. Most of the time the winner is very easy to pick. The double shantay we just had on UK3 was not double shanty worthy, Charity clearly won. It was only because they lost two girls last episode.
for a sec i thought they were both going home. in my opinion it was a bad lip sync. not just for scarlet, but also for charity. she felt a bit disconnected with the song and scarlet was low energy.
Lineysha Sparx literally could've had two challenge wins, was killing the competition, had an incredible lipsync but went home. That definitely could've been a double shantay and giving a pass to Lineysha for the Snatch Game screw up and losing to Detox.
I’m still stunned that season 12s double shantay wasn’t between Jackie and Widow, probably the most powerful lipsynch of the season but they decided to send widow home :/

Monique definitely won that lip sync, they just made up that episode so that Ru could bring back Latrice, Monique had several good reveals (that they don’t even show on the edit), she danced so good, gave a lot of energy whereas Latrice had some ugly boots on, her tights where too dark, her « nude illusion » bodysuit was too light, (I don’t know if it is that hard for a person of color to find skin-matching clothing, especially for a queen of that level, please tell me if I’m being racist by criticizing her on that) and her first wig looked like it was levitating above her head, only to reveal a ponytail x) so yes the category is « Stan the loser » but Latrice was the clear loser of this one. The double shantay should have been for Gia that episode, that was a real « left no crumbs » for both gia and Naomi, but we all saw the season and we know that Ru would have never brought Gia back into the competition...
I would be Eureka vs Jaida in the “need 1” category because they needed to give the final lip sync cash stack away so they basically had to make it so Eureka won the 10k.
I think season 12 and UK3 fall in the "I guess we need 1" category A season is planned with a number of episodes, so obviously double santays are planned if nothing force a double shantay to happen (like an injured queen or a double sashay) Jackie vs Heidi wasnt great so I think they just played the double shantay because the season was comming to an end, and Charity vs Scarlet happened because, besides Victoria going home, they want to get rid of one of the girls in the winning team first
About DRHolland S1, that season was a mess. It's so far the only season of Drag Race I've watched where they don't take in consideration the max challenge, just the runway (it sounds insane, but that's literally what they do all season). I'd watch it if I were you, because it's so bad, it becomes funny to me. This was the worst season of DR imo. About the double shantay, Abby OMG won, even though she didn't do good, but that was her fourth time in the bottom and she didn't have any challenge wins. Ma'ma queen had at least a win, so I think they didn't want to get rid of her (that's the only explanation I can think of).
They got rid of Envy's biggest competitors: Chelsea and Sedergine, so she can win the competion easily... they did the same this year with Keta. I feel like that double shantay came up from a place of: let´s rescue the queen with a win so we can pretend there is competition.

The same happened with Chelsea Boy, who was robbed from the Snatch Game win to favour Envy again. Both seasons were made for someone... 1 for Envy and 2 for Vanessa. I don´t what´s the point..

Besides, they did a bottom 3 the week before for NO REASON. They ignored the dance challenge completely and, as always, only judged the runway looks (the funniest thing is that the choreographer said Ma'ma queen's team was the best and they putted 2 of the "winning team" to lip sync). I haven't watched season 2 of Holland yet, but apparentely it's as bad as season 1.

Phi Phi would have absolutely gone home in her lip sync after she lost her hair and shoes because Willam has said that Ru was fed up with Queens taking their hair and shoes off by this point. I think the first double shantay was intended to send Carmen home, as they probably didn't know she spoke Spanish, and were wanting to save Yara. Personally Scarlett wouldn't be in the bottom for episode 2 but also wouldn't win episode 3 in UK 3
There's only two however Honey vs Vivienne on season 5 and Daxx vs Laila on season 8. A better idea would be what lipsyncs could've been double sashays, cuz let's be real there's plenty of those on the franchise

I still don't get how symone was saved. She bombed the challenge and didn't do that well in the lip sync. Kandy was messy but at least she did more than walk and wag her finger

i do think Scarlett Harlett was saved because of Victoria's injury. of course, it would have been more logical to have it the same day as Veronica and Vanity lipsynced, but Asttina didn't have that opportunity.
I'm so glad you're going to watch Thailand. It's my favorite of ALL the drag race franchises! It stays true to the roots of what drag is really about and plus Thai comedy is honestly some of the best in the world I've realized! Very dark and sarcastic humor.
Ok. Most of your choices I agree with BUT… Monique & Latrice should have been in “Left No Crumbs”…not Stan the loser! Monique killed that performance! I agree with Eureka & Kameron to be “left no crumbs”, but obviously double shyantay-ed cause they were literally besties! And speaking of erratic, Kandy Muse being saved is obviously “Stan The Loser”, and definitely NOT leaving no crumbs! And lastly Monet & Manila (although great fun lip sync), it was double shanty “cause we need 1” due to the eliminated queens coming back for the lip sync lalaparuza episode the week after, not because they played off each other as “besties”. Just my 2 cents…
to sum it up for me, they used to be deserved completely. these days they’re a one use crutch that rupaul uses to keep his favourites in the game (s13, uk2, uk3) all 3 of those recent seasons had easily undeserved double shantays. even counts for as5 and as6 draw lipsyncs. those were not draws😭
I think for the Scarlett Charity lip sync another add on could be, they just lost 2 people last week so similar to the Farrah Cynthia one it could go into "I guess we need 1" (Although the last 2 lip syncs probs desevred it more) I have a werid theory where its like (o wait we were suppose to send home Vanity in her 3rd LS in a row but she won... here we'll save these next 2 and her home next week). Also I'm proberly the only person that think in the Kandy Symone Lip sync they both did bad and it was a "Stan the Loser". With how the Seasons are going the next video will be " History of Knees on Drag Race"
Double shantays should feel like a monumental event, like double eliminations or any other thing that goes against the status quo, but they happen so often they feel cheap.
I would have put jayda vs eureka and heidi vs jackie under "guess we needed 1/guess we had to" as in AS6 the money for lipsynching would have just ?disappeared? and heidi and jackie lipsynch was durring a fan makeover challange and they probably didn't want to make the fans (random fans and not significant others) feel bad...
I think the Widow Von Du and Jackie Cox lip sync to "Firework" should have been a double save. Honestly, Widow nor Jackie should have even been in the bottom that episode. It should have been Gigi and The Predator. For storyline sake and the producer intervention, it wasn't so.
MaMa Queen vs. Miss Abby OMG is definitely a "stan the loser" lip sync. MaMa had a challenge win and had only been in the bottom once beforehand, as well as being beloved by the queens and by the time it aired a fan favorite, whereas Abby had only gotten good critiques once, but not won a challenge, and this was her fourth time in the bottom. Of the two, Abby clearly won the lip sync, even if it was kinda boring especially given it's the same thing she's already done three times, but MaMa was clearly the person meant to be in the Top 3, so they just kept both. Even Envy was shocked and bewildered by it and they showed that in the edit so clearly they knew it was dumb too lol, but they didn't want to bring someone with no challenge wins and four bottoms into the finale on her own when she's clearly not going to make the Top 2, but Abby and MaMa were eliminated in 3rd/4th place together anyway because neither did nearly as well as Janey or Envy. So yeah, it's a mess

The S4 double shantay was a set up, the producers knew Willam was going to be eliminated, and they put Sharon vs Phi Phi to create some tension, but they didn't want any of them to be eliminated.
I would say the season 4 was a clear case of "guess we need 1". They were disqualifying Willam, so if they also eliminated a queen during the lipsync they would be short a queen at the end.
Jaida vs Eur*ka was a “I Guess We Need One” because it was the last LSFYL before the finale. If Jaida solo won like she deserved, the $20,000 tip would have to roll over into the season winner’s pot. So Kylie would have won 120,000 instead & that would set a weird precedent of getting more money depending on extraneous circumstances.

To me jackie vs heidi is a perfect example of i "guess we need one" - they were heading to the end of the season and realised that if they don't do a double shantay they might end up with six queens in the finale. Neither Heidi nor Jackie was a serious contender for the crown anyway, so its not like they kept jackie for storyline reasons or anything.
I wished Veronica had a real oportunity this 3rd season... she had no time nor money to prepare, she already invested for the 3nd season... I like Scarlett but I would like to see Veronica even more. Still team Choriza and Charity tho ♡
The first one with Carmen and Yara. Ive watched S3 very many times. And I remember in that same episode the girls talking about Carmen knowing how to speak spanish and Carmen saying: 'I know broken spanish!' So i'm not surprised they got her to the test on that episode. Manilla even commented about it during the lipsyncs.

I love Angele vs Kana lip sync and I’ll never shut up about how much I love it and I personally think that’s the best lip sync ever. It was clear they really just were having fun and not focusing on themselves to do the best like at the beginning they were thinking of themselves but then they soon decided to have fun, when you compare it to other double shantay lip syncs I feel like you can see a big difference between them. Maybe the reason they just had fun and worked well together was because Kana said that she thinks she deserves to go home instead of Angele even though Angele threw her and Kandy under the bus in the challenge to try get rid of them
For the UK double saves, BBC only let the show have a certain amount of episodes so double shantas aren’t very likely, they did it on S2 coz it wouldn’t add any extra episodes since the next one was the finale and for season 3 Victoria left which meant there was an opportunity to have one.
I love how the Drag Race commentary I follow is evenly divided between Charity and Scarlett. And I'd put it in I guess we need one, they're filling the spot for Victoria.
22:57 The context behind this lip sync is that Kana just returned and flopped ANOTHER challenge, and so she basically asks to be eliminated regardless of how well she does, because Angele had won a main challenge or runway for the previous 5 consecutive episodes. The judges tell her that she should try to win and not just give up her second chance, so then Angele decides to just lip sync with her instead of performing the way she originally intended. That's why everyone's crying during it too. It's really a great moment of television that would NEVER happen on american drag race. Also, Abby vs Mama is a double save 'cause they wanted a 4 person finale and Abby is Envy's Drag Sister. The best moment of Abby vs Mama BY FAR is Envy's "Girl, really?" confessional when the double shantay is announced.
I highly disagree with 2 of those. Saying Latrice won over Monique and that Monique was all over the place.... no Mam!!! And Kandy vs Symone as left no crumbs??? Hell Nah..... That to me was definately a I guess we need one. Both do an OK job, not great at all from either of them, but they couldn't risk losing either one
Scarlet vs Charity was definitely an 'I guess we need one' situation. Victoria broke her knee so they needed to still fill the amount of episodes. I guess they just figured they'd save Scarlet since she had been doing quite well up until that point. Probably they didn't save Veronica (even though they should have imo) because it was getting obvious her runways weren't really at the standard they wanted (A queen can't get an entire new wardrobe in a few months while dealing with depression and having very little income? *shocked Pikachu face*)...
I would say the uk season 3 one was a more “I guess we need one” because of Victoria scone leaving. Charity and scarlet are a tough pair to send either of them so they used this opportunity for story and drama to use their double shantay card
Sorry, but Monique won against Latrice. Latrice did a boring wig reveal and did cool things. Monique, in other hand, did a amazing orange wig reveal and her movements was on point with sissy that walk.
BTW, the thing about Angele vs. Kana, besides how freakingly GOOD it was, was the storyline. Angele Anang had been doing super well in the season, winning four challenges in a row before landing on the bottom for the first time. Meanwhile, Kana had been eliminated, and returned only to find herself on the bottom again. During the judging, Kana asked the judges to eliminate her because she deserved she didn't deserve to be there and Angele did, so the judges kinda had to unbreak her during the judging before the lipsync. Angele was obviously also feeling a lot of doubt in her first time on the bottom, and then they went and did THAT. They delivered one of the best lipsyncs ever, but also built on each other so much that it was impossible to separate their performances, so basically they left the judges no choice but to save both of them, and it worked amazingly with both Kana's doubt and redemption storyline, plus saving the best performing queen of the season. I would say it's probably the best fitting double shantay of the whole franchise, along with Yvie and Brooke.
Totally agree that Heidi won over Jackie. Aside from Jackie doing well up to the political challenge, she was def saved because they wouldn't want her superfan to be sad and blame herself if ever Jackie was eliminated

Yvie vs Brooke was perfect because the song was literally a one up song, which they both embodied and executed it perfectly, you could also put as "bestie" because they worked with the song and each other so well. And this song was perfect for well coordinated stunts and I don't think any other queen could do so well as they did.

The second half of the season will be filled with comedy / acting challenges (+ snatch game) so Scarlett makes more sense to save (plus she won a challenge) with this episode being a token 'vulnerability' moment for a potential storyline.

If they had let Valentina get eliminated, it would’ve been 5 vs 5 and everyone would’ve participated. The double win made no sense.

I kinda don’t understand the push Scarlett Harlett gets. She’s a fierce queen, but I don’t see her as outstanding as she is praised by the judges to be. Charity or Choriza should have been high in the first week, Scarlett should have been in the Bottom 3 instead of Vanity and Charity deserved the win Scarlett got. I can see the Double Shantay though, on the first watch I thought “Wow, Charity might send Scarlett home”, but on a couple of rewatches I noticed that Scarlett really gave a cute performance.
However, I think Scarlett gets pushed too much. Queens like Charity really fall under the radar because of that.

The judges are definitely not considering Charity as competition when she is yvie oddly level!

Some T to the Angele vs Kana lipsync:
- Kana had just returned (after being eliminated after being 3 times in the bottom, so this is was her 4th one.)
- She made a rlly long speech about wanting Angele to stay because she was doing a better job (Kana had no wins, Angele had 6!!!)
- The judges and Angele encouraged her to "fight" for her life, and she servedan amazing performance, just like Angele. After that, they both made it to the grand finale.
This lip sync was so good and the storyline just made it better, especialy since Angele was really shady and mean to Kana the entire episode.
Fun Fact: They planned the Double Save after Morgan and Sonique’s lipsync

A double save needs to be warranted. Both queens have to be so damn good that you just can't pick a winner and sending someone home would seem like a crime. Most of the time the winner is very easy to pick. The double shantay we just had on UK3 was not double shanty worthy, Charity clearly won. It was only because they lost two girls last episode.

Monique definitely won that lip sync, they just made up that episode so that Ru could bring back Latrice, Monique had several good reveals (that they don’t even show on the edit), she danced so good, gave a lot of energy whereas Latrice had some ugly boots on, her tights where too dark, her « nude illusion » bodysuit was too light, (I don’t know if it is that hard for a person of color to find skin-matching clothing, especially for a queen of that level, please tell me if I’m being racist by criticizing her on that) and her first wig looked like it was levitating above her head, only to reveal a ponytail x) so yes the category is « Stan the loser » but Latrice was the clear loser of this one. The double shantay should have been for Gia that episode, that was a real « left no crumbs » for both gia and Naomi, but we all saw the season and we know that Ru would have never brought Gia back into the competition...
I would be Eureka vs Jaida in the “need 1” category because they needed to give the final lip sync cash stack away so they basically had to make it so Eureka won the 10k.
Yeah, Farrah was really absolutely okay in Woman up, Cynthia was pretty bad and probably would have gone home without Eurekas injury.

Jackie vs Heidi wasnt great so I think they just played the double shantay because the season was comming to an end, and Charity vs Scarlet happened because, besides Victoria going home, they want to get rid of one of the girls in the winning team first
About DRHolland S1, that season was a mess. It's so far the only season of Drag Race I've watched where they don't take in consideration the max challenge, just the runway (it sounds insane, but that's literally what they do all season). I'd watch it if I were you, because it's so bad, it becomes funny to me. This was the worst season of DR imo. About the double shantay, Abby OMG won, even though she didn't do good, but that was her fourth time in the bottom and she didn't have any challenge wins. Ma'ma queen had at least a win, so I think they didn't want to get rid of her (that's the only explanation I can think of).
They got rid of Envy's biggest competitors: Chelsea and Sedergine, so she can win the competion easily... they did the same this year with Keta. I feel like that double shantay came up from a place of: let´s rescue the queen with a win so we can pretend there is competition.

Besides, they did a bottom 3 the week before for NO REASON. They ignored the dance challenge completely and, as always, only judged the runway looks (the funniest thing is that the choreographer said Ma'ma queen's team was the best and they putted 2 of the "winning team" to lip sync). I haven't watched season 2 of Holland yet, but apparentely it's as bad as season 1.

I agree with Eureka & Kameron to be “left no crumbs”, but obviously double shyantay-ed cause they were literally besties! And speaking of erratic, Kandy Muse being saved is obviously “Stan The Loser”, and definitely NOT leaving no crumbs! And lastly Monet & Manila (although great fun lip sync), it was double shanty “cause we need 1” due to the eliminated queens coming back for the lip sync lalaparuza episode the week after, not because they played off each other as “besties”.

MaMa Queen vs. Miss Abby OMG is definitely a "stan the loser" lip sync. MaMa had a challenge win and had only been in the bottom once beforehand, as well as being beloved by the queens and by the time it aired a fan favorite, whereas Abby had only gotten good critiques once, but not won a challenge, and this was her fourth time in the bottom. Of the two, Abby clearly won the lip sync, even if it was kinda boring especially given it's the same thing she's already done three times, but MaMa was clearly the person meant to be in the Top 3, so they just kept both. Even Envy was shocked and bewildered by it and they showed that in the edit so clearly they knew it was dumb too lol, but they didn't want to bring someone with no challenge wins and four bottoms into the finale on her own when she's clearly not going to make the Top 2, but Abby and MaMa were eliminated in 3rd/4th place together anyway because neither did nearly as well as Janey or Envy. So yeah, it's a mess

The S4 double shantay was a set up, the producers knew Willam was going to be eliminated, and they put Sharon vs Phi Phi to create some tension, but they didn't want any of them to be eliminated.

Jaida vs Eur*ka was a “I Guess We Need One” because it was the last LSFYL before the finale. If Jaida solo won like she deserved, the $20,000 tip would have to roll over into the season winner’s pot. So Kylie would have won 120,000 instead & that would set a weird precedent of getting more money depending on extraneous circumstances.

To me jackie vs heidi is a perfect example of i "guess we need one" - they were heading to the end of the season and realised that if they don't do a double shantay they might end up with six queens in the finale. Neither Heidi nor Jackie was a serious contender for the crown anyway, so its not like they kept jackie for storyline reasons or anything.
I wished Veronica had a real oportunity this 3rd season... she had no time nor money to prepare, she already invested for the 3nd season... I like Scarlett but I would like to see Veronica even more.

I love Angele vs Kana lip sync and I’ll never shut up about how much I love it and I personally think that’s the best lip sync ever. It was clear they really just were having fun and not focusing on themselves to do the best like at the beginning they were thinking of themselves but then they soon decided to have fun, when you compare it to other double shantay lip syncs I feel like you can see a big difference between them. Maybe the reason they just had fun and worked well together was because Kana said that she thinks she deserves to go home instead of Angele even though Angele threw her and Kandy under the bus in the challenge to try get rid of them

For the UK double saves, BBC only let the show have a certain amount of episodes so double shantas aren’t very likely, they did it on S2 coz it wouldn’t add any extra episodes since the next one was the finale and for season 3 Victoria left which meant there was an opportunity to have one.

22:57 The context behind this lip sync is that Kana just returned and flopped ANOTHER challenge, and so she basically asks to be eliminated regardless of how well she does, because Angele had won a main challenge or runway for the previous 5 consecutive episodes. The judges tell her that she should try to win and not just give up her second chance, so then Angele decides to just lip sync with her instead of performing the way she originally intended. That's why everyone's crying during it too. It's really a great moment of television that would NEVER happen on american drag race.
Also, Abby vs Mama is a double save 'cause they wanted a 4 person finale and Abby is Envy's Drag Sister.
The best moment of Abby vs Mama BY FAR is Envy's "Girl, really?" confessional when the double shantay is announced.

Scarlet vs Charity was definitely an 'I guess we need one' situation. Victoria broke her knee so they needed to still fill the amount of episodes. I guess they just figured they'd save Scarlet since she had been doing quite well up until that point. Probably they didn't save Veronica (even though they should have imo) because it was getting obvious her runways weren't really at the standard they wanted (A queen can't get an entire new wardrobe in a few months while dealing with depression and having very little income? *shocked Pikachu face*)...
I would say the uk season 3 one was a more “I guess we need one” because of Victoria scone leaving. Charity and scarlet are a tough pair to send either of them so they used this opportunity for story and drama to use their double shantay card

Sorry, but Monique won against Latrice. Latrice did a boring wig reveal and did cool things. Monique, in other hand, did a amazing orange wig reveal and her movements was on point with sissy that walk.
BTW, the thing about Angele vs. Kana, besides how freakingly GOOD it was, was the storyline. Angele Anang had been doing super well in the season, winning four challenges in a row before landing on the bottom for the first time. Meanwhile, Kana had been eliminated, and returned only to find herself on the bottom again. During the judging, Kana asked the judges to eliminate her because she deserved she didn't deserve to be there and Angele did, so the judges kinda had to unbreak her during the judging before the lipsync. Angele was obviously also feeling a lot of doubt in her first time on the bottom, and then they went and did THAT. They delivered one of the best lipsyncs ever, but also built on each other so much that it was impossible to separate their performances, so basically they left the judges no choice but to save both of them, and it worked amazingly with both Kana's doubt and redemption storyline, plus saving the best performing queen of the season. I would say it's probably the best fitting double shantay of the whole franchise, along with Yvie and Brooke.
Totally agree that Heidi won over Jackie. Aside from Jackie doing well up to the political challenge, she was def saved because they wouldn't want her superfan to be sad and blame herself if ever Jackie was eliminated
