    MotorCarNut, you’re my damn hero! I’ve been searching how to do this without pulling the motor. My only question is, when you lower the motor (slowly) are you leaving something braced at the bottom to hold the weight or is the engine just hanging by the lower torque strut?
    Thank you again, this is one of the best mechanic videos I’ve ever seen.

    • @motorcarnut

      Thank you I really appreciate that!
      I probably did use a support brace but didn't show it but you can lower the engine slowly and should be fine without it.

    I did this job last night and I don’t think the tensioner was tight enough. Started it for a split second and just heard the slap. I didn’t know how to take the oil pan off because the engine was supported by a jack. Do I have to take the pan off to align the lower chain? Is there a way to do the job with just the front cover off?

    • @motorcarnut
      @motorcarnut  2 місяці тому

      The tensioner is oil pressure controlled, you will hear a rattle for a few seconds until oil pressure builds up. The tensioner doesn’t rely just on that spring pressure.

      @@cabreallsiams9277 actually ended up getting really lucky. I started under the hood and noticed new/ non factory looking rtv squeezed out from the timing cover and the cover was much cleaner than the rest of the motor. I bought the car in June with 100k on it and my guess is the chain had been replaced fairly recently. I let the engine run and listened and it actually ended up being one of the alternator bolts had completely backed out and up against the frame and the other loose. And that was causing the rattle at idle and low rpm. Zipped them back in and problem went away.

Need to take the head off to replace the gasket as she's blown but its got the timing chain and ive only ever done it with the timing belt on my last car, which i have to say the chain worries me a lot more to work with lol

    Just performed this same job on daughter's Sorento 2.4 due to a startup rattle. Replaced chains and tensioners along with pulleys and belt. Whole job was pretty straightforward and went without a hitch. Initially it seemed to quite it down, but five days later I noticed the rattle again. Any ideas what else might be causing this rattle? It's not a deep frequency knock like a rod bearing knock, and it goes away quickly when oil pressure builds. Engine is very quiet after that. 113k miles, very well maintained by me, very clean inside, premium synthetic oil. Any ideas welcome.

    • @motorcarnut

      Sometimes is can be the variable cam gear on the camshaft that when they start to fail they bleed down and you get the second or two rattle. I have videos on Hondas that have that problem.

    Currently doing a diagnostic on a 15 Kia Optima 2.4L there’s a weird rattling/tapping sound coming from timing cover area. Took the valve cover off and noticed a lot of slack on the timing chain. Haven’t taken the timing cover off yet but will be doing so soon thanks to your video. Any idea what could be causing that obnoxious noise? Bad guides, tensioner, sprockets?

    Is it ok to take the sprocket off the oil pump while attached to the chain and can I use a traditional socket. I don't have the special socket for it? I've concluded that I can only take the chain off if I pull the sprocket on both crank and oil pump simultaneously and reinstall sprockets in the same orientation then realign. The chain on this has limited slack with everything removed. Currently at a stand still.
