- Even with all the technology at the U.S. government’s disposal, the best way to gather data from a hurricane is still the hard way: flying into the storm in a propeller plane.
That’s exactly what the men and women of 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron do. Better known as the “Hurricane Hunters,” this all-reserve Air Force unit is tasked with piloting their WC-130J aircraft directly into the eye of a hurricane.
VICE News secured a ride with the Hurricane Hunters as they flew into the eye of Hurricane Irma, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. The Hurricane Hunters don’t fly into storms for fun. During their flight an array of instruments collect and transmit data used to predict how active storms will develop, and move.

I think we all wanted to see the hurricane and not an interview inside a hurricane..
Travelle I wish I saw that as well. However it was night and the film crew probably didn't have the right gear to get usable footage of it. It's like trying to film outside your car window at night with the lights turned off. You'll just get blackness.

Brian A. yes, probably, but then they'd have to name the video differently, otherwise it's clickbait (or at least kind of, I mean they're actually flying into the hurricane, but he's aksing questions which have nothing to do with flying into a hurricane, they could have talked about these topics on the ground as well, if you know what I mean :) )

Leansifer 69.0 I don't think flying into a hurricane needs any additional "hype." What we have here is a case of lazy reporting, combined with a viewership (made up of people like yourself) who needs audio cues to decide what mood they should be in. Lazy, manipulative, and not necessary.

Yeah, there's a few videos of it (such as the one released by the BBC) but there's not much to look at. There's lots of angry-looking clouds surrounding the whole plane, like a really dense fog. That's about it, really. Pretty cool though.

I thought it was pretty interesting. The video did entail what it was like to fly in a hurricane. And one of the airmen did say it was pretty smooth despite the reporter commenting on how turbulent the flight was. I really liked this video though. Very informative.

I have seen another documentary about these airplanes. Its bad. Without the seatbelts, they would often hit the ceiling and then get slammed down to the floor, everything has to be strapped in or bolted down.
I think we were expecting to see a shaking, rattling, plane...
