Ricardo Masvidal As a Veteran from Eisenhower and Kennedy era I can tell you, This is THRILLING! We didn’t have the aircraft then, that we have now…… OMG I CAN IMAGINE! I haven’t been in a military Aircraft since 1962! Look at the horizon!! BEAUTIFUL! Sometimes when you’re up there, you’d just like to keep on going!!
Interesting experience. Doing workups for a cruise aboard the USS Enterprise off San Clemente, we flew a practice alpha strike (maximum effort), inland to "rearrange some sand" in Nevada. I was in the middle of the group in an EA-6B, scanning for electromagnetic threats. I could look forward and see F-14's running scissor patterns back and forth to clear the way, loaded with Phoenix and Sidewinder missiles. Above and to the right were two squadrons of A6's loaded with live 250 and 500 pound bombs. Above and left were two squadrons of A7's, also fully loaded. Then I looked down and noticed we were flying right over the skyscrapers of central Los Angeles. It was a sobering thought, with all that live ordnance aboard.
No flying over cities for me, I was in the bowels of the ship. My job was to get the Enterprise where it needed to be and at sufficient flight operations speed so you guys can get where you need to be. At least I got to come in to the Big E on a COD flight once.
@@JimmyMon666 My one regret, looking back - I wish I would have taken more time to get down into the ship and learn what was happening there. No doubt, it took the ENTIRE team!
I live twenty minutes from the air field of the home of the Blue Angels and we , in this area, watched both teams for a few days getting ready. America Enjoy!
The Blue Angels might have a tighter formation but the Paint on the Thunderbirds is just so damn good!!!! Whoever thought up that livery really is the man!
Chris Van Middelkoop look how much different the aircraft designs are. The f18s are much larger , two tailfins.. seems just more stable in the air in general. I would bet it’s newer than the f16 as well it’s like 70’s era tech. But you can see how small the group of thunderbirds are compared to the larger hornets in some shots it’s hard to even see the pack of falcons next to the hornets. Nothing beats the f18 howl as it approaches tho incredible sound. I wanna time jump to see a team full of raptor$s$$$
@@jak3est The F-18 and the F-16 both came out of the joint Navy/Air Force new lightweight fighter competition. The intent was the Navy and Air Force were to select the same aircraft but the F-16 only has one engine and because the Navy lands on a carrier at sea they preferred 2 engines over one. The Air Force awarded the F-16 right out of the competition but we awarded a letter contract and negotiated the price - that was the year without a summer for us. The bottom line is they both are about the same age but the F-18 is a lot heavier in part due to the carrier suitability beefing up that had to be done.
@@jak3est Both the F-18 and F-16 came into service in 1979. F-16's are about '49 feet and "6 inches in length and the F-18 legacy Hornets which the Blue Angels fly are '56 feet in length. The F-16 is more maneuverable and has a top speed of Mach 2.0 or 1,350 MPH, while the F-18 has a top speed of Mach 1.8 or 1,190 MPH.

I am English and I remember a great programme about the Blue Angels where they go through the flight details whilst sitting at a desk! First time seeing them and the Thunderbirds together. Great video.
They needed two tankers because the Air Force and Navy refuel differently. Air Force has a rigid boom that is controlled by someone on the tanker. The pilot flies to a station and the boom operator guides the fuel nozzle into the receptacle on the plane. Navy has a flexible boom and basket that is extended from the plane but just hangs there. The pilot then flies into position and guides his fuel receptacle into the basket. Not sure why they do it differently, but they do.
@@tannhauser7584 You're correct that Navy and Air Force planes have different types of fueling systems, but this is not "why they needed two tankers". The KC-10 has both types of fueling systems on board. There was a HOIST flight of 4 (yes, FOUR) KC-10's out of McGuire AFB that flew down to Georgia, linked up with the Jets and refueled them over NJ between flyovers, and then again on the Jets trip back south, probably somewhere over North Carolina. Other refueling units were also involved in the transit North/South.

Jealous, I am! First time I saw the Thunderbirds was in '76, flying T-38's... it was a very impressive show, much better than what they do now. After the accident in '82, they went to the F-16's, and scaled back the more dangerous routines. Still impressive, though... saw the Blue Angels in '92 (F/A 18's), and that was a helluva show, also! The Solo tail-walked down the runway at about 100'....!
FYI:"In 1982, the Thunderbirds suffered a catastrophic loss during pre-season training on 18 January.[1] While practicing the four-plane diamond loop, the formation impacted the ground at high speed, instantly killing all four pilots: Major Norman L. Lowry (commander/leader), Captain Willie Mays, Captain Joseph N. "Pete" Peterson, and Captain Mark Melancon. The cause of the crash was determined by the USAF to be the result of a mechanical problem with the No. 1 aircraft's control stick actuator. This resulted in insufficient back pressure by the formation leader on the T-38 control stick during the loop. Visually cueing off of the lead aircraft during formation maneuvering, the wing and slot pilots disregarded their positions relative to the ground."
@@TheDe1deonly Actually, it was the line abreast loop. The maneuver was eliminated from the show sequence for a number of reasons, but an inability to have any situational awareness of ground proximity was the principal one.

@@patsyspry6248 My uncle was an Navy Aviator back in the 50's. He flew the cougar.

Me too, may have not seen them up close but managed to get some cool photos of them refueling right before they got to NYC

When I was a kid I saw the Thunderbirds when they were flying the F4 Phantom. I still remember the sound loved it.
