Fly With Hurricane Hunters as They Measure the Power of a Storm

- NOAA sends teams of scientists and meteorologists into the eye of storms to gather crucial data to save lives.
Experience intense, unique, and sometimes dangerous moments with scientists working in the field, as they explain first-hand the kinds of risks they take to find answers. There's so much more to being a scientist than being stuck in a lab. Watch every Friday for new episodes of Science in the Extremes.

Meet the Crew: Jessica Williams, NOAA Hurricane Hunter

“As one can imagine, working with hurricanes is anything but predictable. ‘Flight tracks, plans and objectives often change in flight, so we need to be prepared to discuss whether these changes are safe,’ says Williams. The idea of safely surveying hurricanes almost seems like a contradiction, but the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center team has made it standard operating procedure.”
Storm Warning: Warmer Oceans Likely Mean Bigger Hurricanes

“Oceans are absorbing the extra heat from greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, and that’s giving tropical cyclones a boost of energy.”
Here’s How Much Better Hurricane Forecasts Are Today Than Decades Ago

“Faster computers, a better satellite, and improved scientific understanding of storm dynamics have brought about a revolution in hurricane forecasting.”

I seriously dream of this job.
Although I don't really have the courage to bear the sense of that much danger.
But this job is phenomenal and threatening and satisfying all at the same time.
This was very interesting. However, I feel that it just scratched the surface and left me wanting more information. I would really like to see a longer version that shows what it is like to fly into a hurricane and see the crew in action, what roles they play and what data they collect.
I would love more content like this. I love learning about these unsung heros who are so vital to our way of life!
Why Am I so fasinated with FLYING N STORES ???🌀⛈️🌀
Thank you brave men and women for flying up into a damn hurricane for others wellbeing.
I always thought this would be a badass thing to do for a living. Just as interesting as badass, might I add.
3 flat earthers disliked this.
@Jeff Lee he knows BITCH
I thought the same thing
What hurricane was the one being measured here ?
Thank you for all you do!
Coolest. Job. Ever
Please talk about Asgardia!
This job dope as f
How do you mount a hurricane on your mantle though?
That. Was. Awesome. More please!
Very cool. I’ll tell you, very few people can say they’ve flown into a hurricane, let alone doing that as a career.
So thunderstorms are more dangerous to fly into than a hurricane???
Crazy...and a grizzly bear at the end?
Has a plane ever gone down directly from a storm?
from a storm? Yes lots, from a hurricane? probably not. hurricanes are actually quite safe to fly in as the pilot can tell where the winds are coming from and steer against it whereas a storm will have winds from all directions
killercaos123 yes
A lot yes, however these hurricane hunters? No. However there was a very close call with one of these aircraft in the 90s I believe where they lost some engines in the middle of a hurricane, there are documentaries about it on UA-cam I think
Yeah, microbursts are pretty horrible things and have taken down several aircraft. Ice forming on the wings of aircraft has also causing the plane to lose lift has also caused a few crashes too. If you are interested in these sorts of things, Air Crash Investigators/Mayday is an excellent matter-of-fact television program that covers this sort of topic.
Thunderstorms, yes, hurricanes no, the hurricane hunters have an impeccable safety record, especially the air force ones
Inspiring woman!
I doubt they take civilians aboard the wp3d Orion flying into a hurricane for an experience but if they did I’d love to do it for an interesting learning experience it definitely looks cool
Can you parachute in a storm and survive?
no u gone get killed because of the fast winds but if their are weak storms with weak winds maybe but still gone get serious injuries
Parachutes are not built for those wind-speeds. You would be surprised at how little wind-speed it takes to break them.
Yes, though it's very unlikely and your chance of getting killed in a very unpleasant way is high. But check out the story of Col. William Rankin.
Did anyone bring any Gravol?
Fly THROUGH the eye wall? Is that possible.
Yes it is
@@AlexGNR Wouldn't the plane be torn apart or thrown of course?
That mic quality inside the plane though
Make video on madhuman
that is scary
These are the planes that i know NOAA uses
*Bombardier CRJ700*
*DHC-6 Twin Otter*
(I dont know the name of the 4 engine turboprop plane)
p3 orion!
Team would.
Oceans will be filled with millions of dropsondes
this will be my job
Damn the comments are lit
I wonder why do Americans build their houses with wood and not bricks and concrete as the rest of the world. Is like fun for them that their houses are been destroyed by tornados and hurricanes.
Carlos F Barajas someone's never visited
Flood protection is underwritten by the govt.
ua-cam.com/video/pf1t7cs9dkc/v-deo.htmlm31s
Carlos F Barajas not just America, so does Australia, Canada, Britain, and many others
Well in California we get a lot if earthquakes so if our house was made of bricks things would not end well. You right tho we should use brick in areas like the southeastern coast
Homes in Florida are mostly of cement block construction with steel roof beams and special windows and doors
Sign me up!
This plane looks old as shit
Dominican superman its a p - 3 orion probs secound hand from the usaf they're usually used to hunt submarines
They are using retired P-3 Orions from USAF and USN. But they also use some Gulfstream's or other small jets.
Why not use a 747 - 8 plane?
larger the plane harder it is to control , plus these plans are built specially for strong wind force of storms
More like older planes seem a bit more stronger in those conditions
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔. No
Our tax dollars well spent.
Tornado hunters are more awsome.
