Great sound! Only thing I would have picked different is the snare drum. I believe Jeff used a steel/metal snare drum, or at least no wood i think.. The original sounds a bit sharper.
What a well organized well thought out presentation. You have shown you have a real passion for the subject matter. Very knowledgeable and impressive. Cheers.
This was great for our band's opening number cover of Rosanna. But by the time I'd untaped all the tissues from all the drum heads, ready for our second number of a Led Zeppelin song, the rest of the band had gone home.
I suspect the dry "muffling" sound came less from the actual drums and more from the recording method in the original...but whatever works if you're trying to emulate the same sound in a modern recording set up then go for it.
0:40 original beat 3:31 recreated beat Pretty close but in my opinion the hi hat is a bit more brilliant on the original tune, and the snare also sounds a little different and the recreated sound also has more reverb than the original. Nice job thought, keep it up.
Good comment. And he plays one ghost note, after the last bass drum and before the second back beat, that Jeff actually didn‘t play. Never realized this until this great video. So thanks, both of you.
Omg I love the sound of these toms.. even with all the muffling they have a clear note and tone.. beautiful sound.. the Percy shuffle is flawless too.. lots of practice went into this piece!

So good man really interesting watching you put this together but I hate to say it man those ghosts notes are so incredibly hard to get exactly right. My uncle met Jeff vaccaro and Toto back in the eighties and he said before that song came out Jeff would spend his time playing that shuffle groove in between sets so I think it's just playing it over and over and over before you finally get those Ghost notes perfect because you can actually hear them really closely they're quite busy
honestly man, I played this song a lot, and love most of us just did the cheaters way.. you know what I mean. other night I sat on the set and spent 4 hours unlearning. its incredibly hard for people with a certain brain programming to be able to split their mind to echo those ghost notes. its just one of those things that really hard to do right. I finally clicked and when it did its like I had been playing it for 20 years. I cant believe how it happened. I still dont understand but its like magic. love this stuff
Would be a great backround info, that Porcaro was inspired for this groove by "Home at Last" from Steely Dan and of course!- "Fool in the Rain" by Led Zeppelin.

Really nailed the sound, but more importantly, those ghost notes on the snare. I've seen so many drummers on UA-cam supposedly "teaching" this feel as a paradiddlediddle between the hi hat and snare, and they don't emphasize just how quiet the. ghost notes are supposed to be so it doesn't sound right at all. Nice work!
Thanks for this video. I recently bought an e drum kit because I need the versatility but recreating kits like the one you did in the video is impossible without knowing anything about drums. Is there a way I can download entire kit presets?
you should get a VST drum kit, they sound much better than any hardware brain on these kits and you can tune until the cows come home. you can even use a standalone if you dont have a DAW. superior drummer is great is you have 400 bucks. EZ drummer is cheaper. then you have garage band for free that has great kits if youre on a Mac
