    I love this. I have 7 different varieties and thought that was too much but seeing this makes happy there are others who love figs too. Your yard is beautiful.😍

    I love your yard. I hope you do a tour there some day. I have been to Jake Mace and Jay's of Yes It Will Grow Here garden tours and your yard by far has so many more different plant and tree species. Your yard is such a display of your care and devotion.

      Thanks! It takes a lot of work but also gives me so much joy. Both Jake and Jay's yards inspired me to start a food forest in 2016. Jay probably has as many mango varieties now as I have figs!

    i am in the coachella valley and our temps are even more extreme than where you are...no matter how radically i cut back my fig trees they grow profuse, over eight feet tall in a matter of months...most of my varieties never go completely dormant and i am able to pick most of the year with the only 'problem' being the height...the height does offer wind and shade protection for the other fruit trees...i have about sixty plus fruit trees with the majority being figs...thanks for your videos!!!

    I've just found your channel and I'm binge watching hard, lol. Love all the figs. I'm in San Antonio and have a Panache tiger fig, lsu gold, lsu purple, and an unnamed Italian fig that "legend has it" my wife's great-great grandpa brought over from Italy. I got cuttings from her great uncle, who has been propagating it and passing it out to family for years.

    Excellent tour. I share your appreciation of figs being in Sacramento, 9B and dry too. By next year I will have a problem of what to do with the bounty as we won't be able to keep up eating them or even drying them. Not complaining, a nice problem to have.

      It's easy to become obsessed with figs. In hindsight, I should have grafted more and planted less. It's a more practical way to get lots of variety and minimize the work that comes with this volume of trees.

    During the winter I experimented with what the Japanese do with fig trees, I bent over the vertical trunks horizontally and staked them to the ground. I can report this really spurred more growth and more fruit as new verticals rose up and are pretty fruit laden. Give it a try over the winter and let us know if you get good results.

    There are over 700 named varieties of fig trees, but many of them are of no use to home gardeners. All of the varieties fall into four fig types:
    *Caprifigs* - Caprifigs only produce male flowers and never bear fruit. Their only purpose is to pollinate female fig trees.
    *Smyrna* - Smyrna figs bear all female flowers. They have to be pollinated by a caprifig.
    *San Pedro* - San Pedro figs bear two crops: one on leafless mature wood that requires no pollination and one on new wood that requires pollination by a male flower.
    *Common figs* - Common figs are the type usually grown in home landscapes. They don’t need another tree for pollination. Figs that require pollination have an opening that allows the pollinating wasps entry the internal flowers. Common figs don’t need an opening, so they are less susceptible to rot caused by insects and rainwater entering the fruit.

    I just planted a brown turkey fig cutting and intend to try grafting different varieties onto it when its big enough. Also I have a cutting of a Brunswick fig that ready to be planted, just haven't figured where to put it. Your tasting video is going to be epic this year 😍 how will you store them all or do they remain on the tree for a while?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  6 років тому +1

      Figs have to be eaten at peak ripeness to enjoy. They don't keep at all. Last year they went pretty fast between co-workers and family. I will eventually have more than can be eaten at once. I hate January thru April when I have no figs so I plan to use a a vacuum sealer and freeze the extras or make some yummy fig butter so I am in fig heaven year round.

      Sorry--JFE showed options so I thought they were in stock but yes looks like they are out right now. Your best bet is to buy a cutting from figaholics.com (located in CA) in January/February and graft. BTW, Figo Preto is near the same as Black Madeira (if not the same plant). He offers these as well. Black Madeira is slow growing and is best grafted onto vigorous rootstock like Brown Turkey. My plant is also slow to put in growth; give it some time. Best of luck and happy gardening!

    Wow, your backyard orchard looks fantastic! 👍 If it isn’t too much trouble, I was wondering if you remember the name of the fig variety shown in the thumbnail of the video. We recently bought a violette de bordeaux and its unripe fruit do not have the traditional violet color of even an immature violette de bordeaux. The figs on the thumbnail tree are nearly identical to ours in terms of stem length, color, shape, and size. Sorry for the long comment, and thank you so much for the wonderful video!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  6 років тому +1

      Hi Austin! Thanks--no need to apologize and the pic shows a graft of what I bought as a Jolly Tiger..it appears to be reverted and tastes like a Brown Turkey when ripe but is not as hardy. While the fruit is larger than average and looks interesting with stripes when immature, it has mediocre taste and dries out so I'm likely to cut it off and replace with a Mt Edna variety next year. My VdBs bear much smaller fruit than the reverted JT and much better in taste. I'm not sure what you have but VdB does take time to develop optimum color and taste like 3 years plus. I have 2 VDBs and they are pushing sub optimal figs right now. The skin is spot on but the pulp is not the right deep red color. They seem to be negatively affected by the dry heat we have right now despite lots of water. It's been a weird year weather wise. If nothing else, I suggest buying a scion form harvey at figaholics.com or a trusted person in the hobby in Spring as they are true to type and inexpensive. You can graft that on to the tree and perform a test as grafts often fruit within months. What area are you growing your VDB in? Are you in the Phoenix area?

    • @austinnelson971
      @austinnelson971 6 років тому +1

      Enlightenment Garden Thank you so much for getting back so quickly, and for the detailed answer! We will probably keep the tree for another year or two, though if it indicates no change I will highly consider your approach of grafting, as I would love multiple varieties on one tree. I will definitely make sure to check out figaholics.com. I am in zone 10b, San Diego, California, so I assume very similar to your climate, but with a cooler summer, and possibly milder winters. We have also had very strange weather patterns here, with a relatively warm dry past winter with nearly no rain, as opposed to our normal cool wet winters. Due to the presence of the fig wasp in our area, one fig I would love to try is unknown pastiliere, which is reported to rival the black Madeira in flavor. Do you have this variety in your collection? Others that of course I would love to own include black Madeira and col de dame blanc/gris. Again, thank you so much!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  6 років тому

      Hi Austin--you are welcome. Your zone is ideal for figs! If it's truly a VdB it will thrive for you. I am growing Pastiliere but it is small and not fruiting yet. My full fig list is here--docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BeyC1NwMzLaGeD2JSfAWIxAxxzEoc0IVFXF0PQzrsNs/edit#gid=0. Grafting is ideal since you can really explore what thrives in your climate without much expense. Thanks for watching and happy gardening!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden

      Hi! I am a berry fig fan over the honey varieties. VdB wins out over the Kadota in both production and taste for me in zone 9B.

  • @forageforage3520
    @forageforage3520 6 років тому

    Would it be safe to say that it generally around the 2nd year that they mature enough to produce figs in Phoenix?
    On average..what amount of daily sun do they require..?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  6 років тому +1

      All of the tasting videos I did last year were on figs I had in the ground for 6 months or less. I believe fruit production on young plants is correlated with the cultivar. The plants in this video have only now just been in the ground for a year and I expect most will produce fruit for me in the next few months well before 2 years. My lot is south facing so they all get sun all day except for a few that are getting shaded out by other plants. Heat is more important than sun but figs do like sun and tend to fruit better when they get 6-8 hours a day.

    Do you rip out and replace fig trees that don't taste the best? What are you top 5 tasting fig? I live in Mass. and bring my trees inside for the winter?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  5 років тому

      My top 5 today are Black Greek, Marseilles Black, Figo Preto, Pastilliere and Scott's Black. For the past 2 years, I have thinned the number of in ground fig trees and turned to grafting. I was overzealous on planting but really embrace grafting now for diversification. Grafting is how I am now trialing figs. It offers a mores sensible approach to trialing figs. In fact I heavily top worked my worst tasting fig this year--the LSU Champagne. It offers vigorous rootstock for grafts so no need to pull the tree--just re-work.
