Ben Whishaw really was wonderful in his trio of movies as Q. His total inability to play it cool when Bond shows up at MI6 and M telling Q to shut up was my biggest laugh of the movie. Plus we finally see the cats!!
No Time To Die reminded me of an Orson Welles quote: "If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” The movie has several chapters where I think, "If it stops here, there will be a happy ending." But, the arc of Daniel Craig's Bond has always been equal parts thriller and tragedy.
Imagine if at the end Bond sits on a ledge, pulls the stuffed animal out, lays it on his lap, pulls out Felixs cigar and smokes it. That would even be a more caring end to bonds life at least dying like bond would.
I'm hoping Calvin and David's opinions on the film diverge far enough so we can get to see "The Battle for No Time to Die" in a few years time ;)
I want to see the debate video between Joe and those who differ from him on NTTD.. that should be interesting and I know which camp I'm in.
As David said, I want my bond to be escapism and adventure. Bond is a handsome hero that does not die, is an assassin, lone wolf, womanizer, a jerk, he has a mission for queen and country. He is not a family man. And when he fights, he stays clean and impeccable!
I just want somebody involved with the making of this film to just come out and explain....WHY ? as male 52 year old who followed Bond most of my life I hated it....but I understand why..I'm from a different generation than their target audience. but I know lots of younger, female, viewers who felt same.. .".Where are you Bond" asks M ..I was wondering same thing all through the movie ..(and I loved Casino and Skyfall )
I wouldn’t have minded if Safin’s whole motivation in the third act was just that he wanted Madeline and Mathilde for his own. The whole world-ending genocide plan was unnecessary. He needed the doctor to kill Spectre for revenge, which made sense, he needed Madeline as she was the only one who could get to Blofeld- now he just wants her back because he’s an obsessive psychopath. That would have made sense to me. Bond having to rescue his wife and daughter was enough stakes.
I would have preferred if his motivation shifted to wanting Madeline because he wants somebody somebody somebody somebody somebody to love.
I feel like people weren't paying attention to the conversation they had at the end because Bond literally points this out that what happened to Safin does not justify using Heracles. By the end he's not fulfilling any revenge, he's just become a villain and that's the point. He's not simply trying to end the world tho, MI6 is trying to stop Safin from being the "god" that decides who lives and dies and that's why it doesn't matter who he's targeting -same issue Bond had with Mallory.
While always going too far in his execution his motivations do make sense tho: they stem from the murder of his family, he wants control over his turbulent environment (often seen in irl psychology) and he wants to stop any other criminal organisation like Spectre from taking over. This is ironic because it's the classic tale of eventually becoming what he hated, like revolutionaries becoming dictators.
Trying to control Madeleine and force a "happy family" is part of this, coming from her being the only person he felt a connection to after he lost his family. After Mathilde bites him he realises that this isn't possible (a token attempt at returning to a normal life), and he turns to his plan for Heracles -going all in on being the villain he truly always was. In the end he dies exacting undue/overblown revenge (story of his life), just like at the start.
That's my interpretation of what they were going for. I think there's more depth in that than a simple save the girl from the crazy guy plot like you suggest
No, he wants Madeline to suffer because her dad killed his parents as an agent of Spectre. That's why you have this tea scene - he wanted to give her the same nano bots that would never allow her again to touch her daughter. That's what this third act was really about but I think they should've made this more clear. It's the reason why he let's the kid go as well ;)

That or Safin wanting Madeleine to complete his revenge by giving him what her father took away from him: a family.
The primary motivation for the ending still seems like it was to prevent Craig from being asked whether he would return in every interview for the rest of his career.
And yet people are still saying 'get Craig back to resurrect Bond'...he can't get away!

Yes, that's the rumor. That's still no excuse for killing such a legendary and respected character even if it's a rebooted version.
@@LeonWick526 They've killed Wolverine and Tony Stark recently which were both well received and that probably played a part.
The fact he's still getting stick for the 'rather slit my wrist' comment when he only said that as he was asked 'are you coming back' about 50 times just as Spectre [a troubled production] had finished speaks volumes.
4 viewings in? Jesus, I must not be a 007 fan then, coz once was enough for me for NTTD. I’d need at least a year before watching that again.

After the second viewing I realized gun barrel fading to white means Bond is the one who dies in this film, unlike the standard blood where it’s a standard film where Bond kills the bad guy and he lives to see another adventure.

@@younusimam-thesalamproject6340 yeah me and my pals noticed that......then they destroyed everything...his car (again) ,felix ,his 007 number, (that was a fiasco,its mine but you can have it back....definitely re shot after panned initial trailer,) his name meaning nothing at MI6 ...then the man himself.....felt like it was made by non bond fans .....not a broccoli whose family been invested in it for 60 years ...shocking ,positively shocking...no keeping the British end up for this secret agent..

When Louis Armstrong was playing in the beginning of the movie, I knew something bad was gonna happen.
Yes, the discussion was over 2 hours and it took me a few days to watch it all, but I enjoyed every moment! Great job David, and all were terrific. So many insights and additional details and I'm back to see the film in a couple of days with a lot more to look for. Thanks so much!

Although, Craig does a goid job of portraying a Military Tool instead of a suave ,smooth , man of the world.

I usually hate these split screen dynamic conversations, but David is just so good at balancing everything, no one does it like him, everyone is included and every point gets equal air
I really wasn't expecting the 2 hour 45 minute bond to feel like the one that would most benefit from an extended edition.
Maybe they'll release it one day. I always had the feeling there was a huge story arc behind Safin, because he somehow got this massive naval base with like a 100 Russian soldiers on it. How? The Russians are even sending in a military escort for the nano bots. Why? These boats are the reason they are evening sending rockets at this island because M said in the call they can't take out Russian boats without the world asking a lot of questions.
I’m so ready for this discussion. I hope to see Joe Darlington & Scott Atkins eventually talk about No Time To Die too.

The reassuring feeling that he's still there was done for me at the end of the credits. The classic "James Bond will return" comes up as always, and it just had even more of an impact this time, it was pretty special.
I've made a playlist of all these four's vlogs on No Time To Die over the last 2 years so it's going to be great to have them all together to discuss the film after it's finally out. Can't wait!

My biggest issue with Bond’s death is that it didn’t feel thematically earned. All the plot logistics aside, the movie didn’t feel like it was building up to his death, everything just awkwardly fell apart at the end.
It's tough to thematically justify the character dying considering he's written as a character who always escapes hopeless situations.
@@LeonWick526 I totally agree, but with how much they’ve changed conventional understandings of Bond with this movie I feel they could’ve found a way. Perhaps there’s a growing theme that the world is doing fine without Bond (which would admittedly lead more naturally to his retirement to wholesome family life) or perhaps his actions became increasingly vile and unforgivable, leading to his end in a karmic way.

It is thematically earned. They established that Bond cant have anyone close because of the life he lives but now he has a daughter and partner and because of him again theyre endangered in multiple ways. So the only way for him to have loved ones is for himself to dissapear. Whether that means he dies or just hides away is another discussion. Also they set themes of the meaning of Bond and 007, its not specific to James Bond himself but it has a legacy that can be carried on so even if hes not there there will always be a Bond and 007.
In short, there was never supposed to be a "Craig arc," Skyfall (which I believe is a masterpiece) was supposed to be the standalone and bring Bond back into the Canon continuum... and then Spectre had to prance along, tie all three movies together (unnecessarily) and create the "Craig arc." The whole notion of the "arc" is Spectre's mistake, and NTTD is just a clean up crew for Spectre's mess, leading to Bond's literal demise. Spectre should have never been made or at least not in the fashion that it was. Who would have known that Spectre would literally lead to Bonds death, if not the death of the entire Bond franchise.
I've really enjoyed DC as bond ..even in quantum there was an edge to his bond.....this film ruined all that for me ..I was happy for him to walk away after spectre...let it begin again with new actor... ...if bond does return I've no idea how...
This. This movie has problems. Plenty of them. But it inherited a lot of them from Spectre.
@@lovablesnowman agreed ..the people behind this said they wanted to tie up loose ends from spectre....what loose ends,most people would have been happy with how spectre ended .......id have been happy for daniel craigs bond to come back having ditched madelaine (never bought into that relationship...felt too forced and not the most scintillating character ). and have one last kick ass mission ...or a new actor to take over....instead of what this movie served up.....
So basically spectre was last jedi and NTTD was rise of skywalker. I can agree with that

Another thing that I found unconvincing is believing Silva to be simply a Spectre agent (tying in Skyfall would mean just that) yeah I think that character deserves more and should not be reduced to anything less than he was presented as in the movie. He'll probably be able to take on Spectre all by himself and do a better job at it than Safin.
I've watched most of the bond movies in the theater and I will not see this one. I am so glad to be done with Craig Bond era so we can go back to James Bond

Agreed. I used to want to be Bond. Not anymore. The fantasy, fun and charm is gone.
No Time To Die started as a James Bond movie in the first act but by the third it became anything but.
I really enjoyed this debate. I must admit, I’ve never heard of any of you and enjoyed all of your viewpoints. A few things I was surprised you didn’t pick up on. In Skyfall, when Bond returns to MI6 - he’s only been gone a few months but M puts him through a barage of psychological and physical tests which we know he fails and he is still accepted back. In NTTD he’s been gone for 5 years and straight back to being in the double oh section. A bit far fetched.
If Bond and Felix were that close, why didn’t Felix know that Bond had his number?
And the most far fetched scene by far - Bond rocks back to MI6, parks in Central London on double yellow lines and his car isn’t towed??? I thought we’d need a scene with Bond having to retrieve his car and shooting everyone at the impound yard!
Random thoughts: James Bond is a master spy, he doesn't need more clues, he knows that child is his the moment he sees it. The next morning making her breakfast he starts to let himself accept it, and dare say think he can have a family. The forest action scene isn't special in terms of stunts. Instead it gains new intensity bc Bond is trying to save his own family for the first time ever, knowing he's let Bond girls die before but failure isn't an option now. And then while they don't die, he loses them nonetheless. Also wish the nanotech exposure wasn't so permanent and fatal. And i think too an element lost is how the nanobots travel and Bond couldn't even risk leaving the island. The way the nanobots travelled from Madeleine to Bond to Blofeld, and the way M explained how you could release them on one side of the world and through exponential contact they'd make a way to their target anywhere, Bond couldnt take any risk by leaving an island targeted by missiles. Also the "woke" moment Jeroen called BLM fanfare, the goofy scientist had spoken that kind of prejudice full of himself language in his first lab scene. And M and Bond had a scene when talking of the nanotech danger that part of the weapons risk was that in the wrong hands it could be genocidal. Just a bit cringy hearing four non p.o.c. men have a conversation about "wokeness". They didn't say anything controversial, but of all topics, a conversation on wokeness,"being alert to injustice in society", surely screams for a wider diverse perspective.

Yeah I’ve noticed this in a lot of Dutch Bond Fans stuff-he seems super obsessed with “wokeness” and “PC culture” which is pretty cringe. Like dude, this is Bond, one of the least woke franchises of all time, calm down. No one’s coming to take your toys.
If I (a progressive person) can enjoy this franchise in spite of all the blatant sexism, racism, and even outright rape (committed by our hero) then I think you can unclench and enjoy a movie where a black woman kills a Nazi. Ppl like him don’t seem to realize that viewing everything through an “anti-woke” lens is equally as lame as someone viewing everything through a “woke” lens. He complains about how that scene is making a political statement but in reality *he’s* the one politicizing it.
Since when did killing bigots for being bigoted become a political statement? As long as I’ve been alive, that’s just been an easy way to get the audience to hate a villain. I doubt this guy would watch Raiders of the Lost Arc and call out that movie for being “political” or “woke” even though it’s an entire film dedicated to killing Nazis.

It was excellent. I welled up toward the end during my 2nd viewing. I haven't experienced anything emotional in the theater in ages.
I like the first 20 minutes or so of NTTD but then it’s downhill for me…the plot is poor IMO and an overall lack of creativity.

I don’t think the idea of Bond still being alive but not being able to be with his family would’ve worked as an ending. In fact, it would be deeply unsatisfying.
That would be one of the easiest plot lines to undo....they could have simply developed a nanotech vaccine to protect Madeline and the daughter...in fact the film could have ended with them going into isolation, and Bond going off to tracki down the vaccine to save them, priming us for Bond 26 ......

I think Daniel Craig was done playing the role after SKYFALL. (Awesome film) Then someone wrote him a bigger check!!! He wanted an out!! And a way to refuse anymore large paydays!! The ending was a way for Craig to close his own book. Not sure I’ll even watch it. Maybe for the Headlight machine gun scene… or maybe I’ll just watch the preview again….?
I saw this movie 6 times and every time it hits me as hard as it did the first time. For me you don't kill the hero, regardless of the actors requirements - then put up a sign that says he's going to return. Lots to like about the film but for me the second hour is just a waiting game for the last 20mins which as a fan is such a shame.
Great video David! Love all you guys, and your respective channels and opinions. Just like NTTD needs multiple viewings, I've just watched this video twice back to back on my day off. I agree with so much of this, the likes and dislikes. But I will say I'm with Joe about Craig's Bond being it's own kind of self contained saga, thus I'm mostly okay with Bond dying. It just wraps up his arc and we can move forward now. Though, I do hope they do each new movie as a stand alone story, like they did traditionally.
This one of the greatest discussions on one greatest James Bond film that ends the time of Daniel Craig as James Bond and it's a great ending and a better saying goodbye then with Die Another Day
The only Bond film that I went back to the theater to see it a second time. I loved this movie. Why wouldn't Craig's Bond change as he gets older? The entire rest of the cast has changed, it makes perfect sense that there will be a "new" James Bond just like there was a new Moneypenny, a new M, a new Q. Why would anyone pretend that Bronson and Craig are the same James Bond? Glad you liked it also, Jack.

This video was great, kudos to David for putting it together. I love how these four tubers collaborate and share from time to time instead of having petty rivalries.
My reaction to the movie is almost exactly like David’s. There are parts of it that really work but the ending isn’t done well. I’d have preferred that Bond live, but if they had to kill him I’d rather have seen something thrilling and triumphant, closer to Tony Stark’s winning sacrifice in Endgame. Instead we got something a lot closer to Kirk’s underwhelming and pointless demise in Star Trek Generations, or Han Solo’s disappointing and cheap send off in The Force Awakens.
That 2 hours flew by. I found all four communicate so well and appreciate another's opinion if not agreeing on it.
I fell in love with James Bond after never had being a fan previously when Daniel Craig took over as casino Royale came out and I have really become a humongous fan of Daniel Craig's entire run and I have to say that I left the theater feeling quite peaceful and very happy with the overall achievement of Daniel Craig's entire run from beginning to end.
I've got to say that I'm on team Joe. I share just about every sentiment and opinion as you do. Of course I see the merit of each of your thoughts and take on things. As of this very moment and after 4 viewings and coming from a 20 year fanatic, NTTD ranks ever so slightly as my favorite of the Craig era.

There's a big difference between watching a James Bond movie and a Daniel Craig movie, No Time to Die was a Daniel Craig movie, Casino Royale was a James Bond movie, even Skyfall was a James Bond movie and that might explain why they are better movies...

1:34:55 excellent point by Joe. David Arnold and Daniel Kleinmann really updated the music and the pre-title graphics of the Bond movies into the modern age. Paying brilliant homages to John Barry and Maurice Binder.
I think David Arnold should be brought back and be in the role of John Barry of being the composer of a generation
Amazing discussion guys. Very cathartic. My personal feeling viewing NO TIME TO DIE, it’s a good roller coaster ride but with a brick wall at the end.
It used to feel good that we all had a (although fictional) character always waiting in the shadows ready to save the day, not anymore apparently. JAMES BOND should NEVER die!

I loved this video and am a huge fan of all of the round table’s UA-cam Channels.
One thing I gotta say about the ‘reinstating Bond as 007’ scenario is this:
When I first saw the film I managed to go in with zero spoilers. I had avoided and the internet in general since the initial reviews came out. So when watching the movie and they’re on the cargo plane and Nomi asks M to reinstate Bond as 007 my heart literally sank and hit the floor.
This is because (as you all correctly - in my opinion - pointed out in the round table) that there wasn’t any ‘earned moment’ where Bond needed to get hit title back. Because of this sudden gesture from Nomi I instantly chocked up and my heart skipped a beat. Not because it was a touching moment of solidarity on her part. But because I immediately and instinctively knew that Bond was going to die by the end of the film. I couldn’t quite say how but I knew in my gut this was the end. Then the entire duration of Bond on the island I started sinking and squirming in my seat for all the interrogation and chase scenes. When Bond turns back from the dinghy to go back inside the base I literally said ‘oh gawd, this is it!’ And the entire storming the castle sequence where Bond is truly kicking a** through the whole thing I knew it was his last stand. And when he got shot and was struggling with processing what Saffin did I was in tears.
I adore this film- and would put it in my top 5 Bond films. But I struggle to want to watch this film because of the emotional toll it takes on me.
I have never 'bought' Felix-as-best-buddy. "Let's go, James!! Ha ha ha ha! "Wheeee!" It always felt forced to me. This Craig detour is choppy. For a guy he just met on CASINO, and had precious little interaction with since then, the emotional impact of Felix is very much taken for granted and unearned.
I don’t really agree. Leiter is in Quantum where Bond does say he think it’s a good idea Felix got promoted. So he does see him as a good agent. Also in Spectre he calls Leiter a friend, I do believe they keep in touch outside of the films
@@hekkie6082 Yeah, the previous films establish Leiter as a long standing friendly presence in 007's universe.
The problem for me is that throughout Craig's era we've been told that he wants love and he wants family (Vespa, M etc) but he losses those chances through no fault of his own. So now he finally gets all that he's ever wanted and he just gives up. That makes no sense in light of the previous 4 films. There is no way he would give up after everything he's gone through. Even if you left his ending ambiguous that would be better than this. It frustrates me every time I think about it.
Yeah, it was just nihilistic for the sake of it.
Everything is written for emotional impact with no thought that it goes against what the character would do.
He doesn’t give it up, it’s taken from him. Remember, the nanobots can spread to anyone through physical contact. Bond can’t just not touch his family, he can’t touch anyone. The only way to save them is for him to die. That’s absolutely a sacrifice Bond would be willing to make.

@@magnusprime962 He has best scientists on earth that won't just give up. It's too dangerous not to have an antidote to the nanobots when there are infected people still out there.
Honestly, it was a perfect end to a near-perfect generation of Bond. Even when the films stumbled they were still waaaaay better than average.

I loved your discussion! I find that I have no desire to rewatch either Spectre or No Time to Die. There is no fun or joy in either movie.
Feeling sorry for Joe being outnumbered here, totally concur with him, absolutely adored the film (3x viewings thus far) and it's my second favourite Daniel Craig movie after Casino. A phenomenal movie, beautifully shot, emotional, incredible action sequences, perfectly scored, I can't fault it and I'm a lifelong Bond fan.
Great discussion. Liked the format. So much to talk about. Won't go into it all. As for the ending it is contrived. I think the problem is that they made the same mistake they did with Spectre (and to a certain extent Skyfall): They tried to do so much and there's so much going on I think they got to a point where they realized "Oh crap, this is long. Get to the ending we want quickly." Yeah, this one will be talked about for some time.

Joe's point about The Daniel Craig movies being one long origin story is a right on the money. I was really hoping in NTTD we'd finally get that classic Bond scene where Bond goes into M's office, gets a mission briefing, and receives a folder with his instructions. Obviously that didn't happen because unlike the other five Bond actors, Craig's movies have all been connected. Now that by itself isn't an issue but when every movie's plot is directly influenced by the previous movie, you just can't have a stand alone movie where Bond goes on a mission that's unrelated to his prior missions. Something else that annoyed me about the Craig era is that in every movie he goes rogue. I first noticed it when Matt Mira and Matt Gourley pointed it out on their podcast "James Bonding" and it's bothered me ever since. Great episode! I enjoyed all the differing opinions on the movie.

Does everyone realize how no time to die actually allows Daniel Craig to get in and related to Dr no and goldfinger and some of the other classic films? This is really awesome and amazing and I'm so glad that he got to end his awesome and gritty version that stuck pretty well close to itself but actually allows him to pay homage to the classics at the same time and go out in a finite way with a bang! A character with a clear beginning middle and end! And let's face it casino Royale as a beginning Skyfall as a middle and no time to die as an end filled in with a little quantum of solace and spiced up with a little specter.. man I'd say we got us some amazing series here!
this is a great discussion with this film. I did enjoy it and a definite end to Craig's run, there in comes my own gripe with the film in that everything is convenient in the film to end for Craig rather than end for Bond. We have been on this journey with Craig. Everything in the narrative worked for the actor rather than the character. That can be interpreted with the viewer. The T2 ending comparison is great because there we see the end of the character and Arnie, but, it worked for the story. Here, the end came for the actor rather than the character.
I will say, i really enjoyed the final action sequence and seeing two Double O agents work together. It brought back to the opening of GoldenEye and I hope we get to see more of that in the next series. Seeing MI6 agents work together.

The ending is very Flemingesque. Bond isn't a cartoon character. He's human. He has flaws. Certainly, the film versions have often treated him like a cartoon superhero come to life for the After School Special crowd. But whenever the series goes off the wall with 13 year old boy fantasies like Die Another Day or A View To A Kill, they usually bring it back to the novels. Living Daylights, Casino Royale and to a lesser extent For Your Eyes Only are examples and those are some of my favourite Bond films. I really don't think it's necessary to cringe at anything in a 007 movie. The early Connery films were seeped in death as essentially the main theme of those movies, particularly From Russia With Love, maybe my favourite Bond film of all time. Bond films at their best are realistic spy thrillers, not goofy action comedies for barely teenage boys. Tone is everything in a Bond film. You can have your one-liners, as long as they fit with a darker tone. Bond is a lethal assassin with major PTSD and substance abuse issues. There's nothing in that that screams sitcom. The Craig films are supposed to be more or less grounded in reality (with a few facepalm inducing exceptions), so what's more realistic than having Bond die? We can debate if it's done correctly, but killing off Bond at some point in this series just seemed obvious to me, especially if we're doing this Daniel Craig, flawed, realistic 007 thing. I'll take that ending over anything in the Brosnan films, which were just a series of very juvenile films that appealed to only teenage boys in the 90s and hardcore Bond fans who would watch a bad Bond film.
I do love this movie - I hate the ending. I really hate how I felt walking out of the theatre, disappointed and dazed, and shocked. The music, the acting, stunts, sound, scenery, action, lighting, cinematography, framing, costumes and sets - all of the technical aspects of this film are STELLAR. That ending is just awful….but the Zimmer “Final Ascent” scene music is some of best music I’ve heard in 10 years.

Agreed. Never left a movie before feeling angry. The person I was with saying relax it’s just a movie. As soon as the daughter appeared I had a sinking feeling.. it was clear they wouldn’t kill a child in the movie and they couldn’t leave bond being a father so he had to die. I go to a bond film to see him saving the day the day in style and living to fight another another day. Casino royale and skyfall fantastic. The other three made a mistake of trying to connect the dots and serve up a timeline which doesn’t work in the bond series of films. I’m hoping the next actors Bond returns to each film being a separate story. A couple of pet hates from Craig’s series..I’d like a return to the traditional Maurice binder gunbarrel in future and also don’t be afraid to play the bond theme during an action sequence. Understood the lack of theme in casino royale but the others all seemed scared to play it. Finally…last 2 theme songs have been dreadful.

I absolutely adore this and thank you for making two hours seem like no time had passed. Honestly, I LOVE No Time to Die and fall in line with Joe... It just hooked me from the beginning and loved every moment. Admittedly, Safin and the plot is rather weak but when I'm watching it, it really doesn't impact or take anything from the film. Great, great, great discussion and as Elliott Carver said "Delicious"!

Great video, guys. Everyone has an opinion about this movie and nobody’s wrong. I am Team Joe on this one. I absolutely loved this movie. People say that when you leave a Bond film you should be walking on air after seeing your hero triumphant. For me, I was elated because of the emotional impact it had on me. Yes, I was entertained but I was also moved. That last scene with Madeleine and Mathilde in the Aston-Perfection! Wow!

The bottom line is that the writers did not understand James Bond or his world. It was an okay film but definitely not a James Bond film.

I don’t agree with the view that Bond didn’t have to die at the end of NTTD. He wasn’t just infected. He was bleeding out, too. Just remember that this is lore. The fun of a long franchise is visiting different takes on the tale, the fiction. If his death is never explored, the full story is never explored. Again, James Bond will return! This is how I also enjoy movies like Quantum and Moonraker. It’s one take-that’s it! It’s fun to see James displayed in different ways.
I thought NTTD was the most Bond of all Craig’s films. Not the best film. But the best Bond film.
It isn’t linear, but many stories do link. Given this series is the origins of bond it doesn’t make sense.

I am in Australia and just seen the movie. I was disappointed to see 007 die at the end. Loved almost everything else about it,
I did make it the two hours, but not all at once. Completely agree with what Calvin said near the end. NTTD needs multiple viewings. I'm at a disadvantage living in a small midwestern town. No theatre. I had to drive out of town twice to see it. The second viewing really helped and I can't wait for the DVD. Calvin also mentioned how this film stays with you. So true. I just keep typing No Time to Die in the UA-cam search box and watch whatever comes up. Thanks for the great discussion.

I never thought I would say this after Casino Royale and Skyfall but I'm ready for the next chapter so I can cleanse my palate of Craig. The Mission Impossible series is wildly successful and they manage lighthearted, feel-good moments. It's time to bring that feeling back to Bond and leave the gritty weeping behind.
Oh and if EON decides to use this as the blueprint for every actor going forward (self-contained arc, death in the final movie, etc) I'm going to lmao at every one of you who have been cheering No Time to Die.

Connery set the scene and it was continued through Moore and Brosnan, This is what separated a Classic James Bond from all other action movie characters and why woman wanted him and guys wanted to be him
It's why Classic James Bonds like Moore, Brosnan and Connery were Brilliant while Craig is nothing more than a generic action character with a cool name and heritage built on the backs of 3 of his predecessors.

I love MI films but they have taken time to evolve in there own way [Simon Pegg adding comic relief, Rebecca Ferguson joining] as has Craig's Bonds. If you watched MI2 you'd never think MI Fallout was where it was going.

As of Spectre, the Craig Bond story arc felt retconned. But I agree with Joe, if they'd abandoned the story arc and just made NTTD a standalone adventure, it would have been trading one problem for another. I really envy Joe's reaction to the film. I had the opposite experience - after a certain point in the film (Felix's death?) the film could do no right.
Perhaps if his fate was left uncertain, or if he made himself disappear at the end, I think I would have had a better reaction to end of the film. As it is, the character deaths and, particularly, the use of the song "We Have All the Time in the World" were unearned, im my opinion. The inclusion of the child character took me completely out of the story. Her presence felt exploitative - an easy way to generate tension during the pursuit by the henchmen.
Calvin, thanks for putting in a word for the original (and, to my mind, only) meaning of "woke". I feel that the term has been hijacked by people who are afraid of confronting issues related to social justice. I didn't find anything problematic with the story in that regard. If anything, I felt Nomi's relinquishing her code number back to Bond felt out of character. The racist angle to the scientist's final speech might have been impactful if it had occurred during a scene that otherwise made an ounce of sense. (Why was there a pool of acid being stirred by workers in hip waders?)

I wanna touch on, in Spectre, onboard the train to Blofeld's lair as Bond tries teaching Madeleine how to handle a gun. She mentions how a man once came to her home as a child which would then explain why she knows how to use a gun, but also go on and use that as a sequence for the opening of No Time To Die. However, my problem with that, and it goes to show they never really planned for sequels. Few moments later in Spectre, when Bond and Madeliene enters the very room with Blofelt, examining the meteorite. Blofeld says to Madeline "I came to your home once, to see your father" to which she replies "I don't remember" and Blofeld responds "But I do" which would then imply he was the one showing up at the beginning of No Time To Die instead of Safin?
There was a framed photo of Blofeld / Oberhausen with Madeline as a girl - remember on the mantle of her “chamber” when they arrived to Blofeld’s crater lair? Obviously, Madeline would have remembered the face of any attacker (like how she constantly carried the memory of the Man in the Mask) - she played off Blofeld’s “I came to see your father…” her father was a prominent and trusted member of SPECTRE up until only recently. I never thought for a moment that Blofeld went to her house to kill anyone - he was a friendly associate at that time.

But now that you mention it, could that frame acknowledge that Mr. White once worked with Spectre and that relationship didn't work out? Mr. White does mention the morality shift which made him deviate from Spectre right before his suicide.

Good talk guys! Personally, It feels like the filmmakers walked past the best ending of Bond finding redemption through saving and being with his daughter for the sake of an emotionally manipulative ending that they didn't pay off successfully. And My list falls with David's. As much as I thought Quantum would be the worst film when I first saw it. It holds up strong against Specter and there are aspects of Quantum that has it even close to No Time to Die for me.
I think one of the main influences on how this film will be looked at in the future will actually be what they decide to do next.
Will it be something better or will we look back and hanker for the Craig era films, including this one?
Also it can be hard to compare Bond films from different eras with each other sometimes, whereas the next new Bond film will be something "uncraig" that we can directly compare to its predecessor and as a result may make this film look better or worse than we perceive it now.
I completely agree with Joe. The main point being that as soon as they decided to reboot the series back in 2006, they set off on a trajectory that would have to be ended the day Craig decided to retire. I see the Craig era as detached from the rest of the series anyway. The film makers had, in essence, painted themselves into a corner and for me there was no way to really end the series than this. I for one would never want Bond to die, but as I say, the producers really had no choice.
I fully agree with Joseph Darlington in the discussion. Craig has been the closest to Ian Fleming's James Bond, even more so than Timothy Dalton was.

I think this film is excellent. One thing that's interesting to consider is Bond's psychology in "No Time To Die," his attachment to Vesper in particular. Her decision to kill herself in "Casino Royale" has no doubt played on his mind for years. And I think to some degree it inspired him as he made his decisions in the final act. Also I think his explosive visit to her gravesite in Act I reflects, to some degree, his fate in the end. The film gives us a lot to consider.

This film I enjoyed the pre title sequence all the way to the Cuba scene, however it falls off a cliff fast with felix’s death all the way to the ending. But something that is not being brought up enough is I felt there was not enough action, and that they were all too short especially since this is the longest bond movie by 15 minutes. Like the fight scene on the boat was like 10 seconds long and the jeep was short and the fight in the stairwell was like 20 seconds. More action was needed IMO especially the third act which fell apart for me. Definitely not the worst bond film but bottom 5. 3/10 I know i’m in the minority but it’s just my opinion.
You are right, there is no huge set piece moment - even Spectre had much more of them when you think about the crazy scene where he crashed two Range Rovers with an airplane. There is none of that in No Time To Die. Even the car chase was quite ... well, we've seen this better like a 100 times, for example in the intro to Quantum of Solace. I felt like their goal was to make everything super authentic, but that doesn't work for a Bond movie :)
You have very long fights in the third act in the bunker, but they are only okay - they literally kill waves of Russian special forces who don't behave like Special Forces at all - which I guess was a homage to Pierce Brosnan :O)
I agree, I also found the action scenes very tepid, almost as if Fukunaga filmed them as an afterthought, with none of the craft shown by Campbell, Mendes and heck, even Forster. The only action sequence I truly enjoyed, and that felt really unique, was the chase in the Norwegian forrest - probably because it played out more like something we'd see in a thriller or horror film (setting a mood, slower cuts, etc), which is probably more akin to Fukunaga's sensibilities.
@@b.chaline4394 I agree with you that the third act was homage to Brosnan especially Tomorrow Never Dies, but that fight with Primo was like 10 seconds long and I wished it would be longer like for example the knife fight in casino which was fantastic, Also it’s interesting you picked the Norway chase because that was my least favorite chase scene, it had so much potential when you see all those motorcycles and cars and helicopter you think OMG this is going to be a huge chase and action scene but nope it’s only 90 seconds long, although the forest shootout was good although I wish there was a huge fight against the guy who killed Felix versus just tripping on a log, to be fair though the brother line was awesome. Finally I wished the final fight against Safin was more than 6 seconds. I’m glad I’m not alone for the action being weak. Totally respect your opinion 👍🏻
Daniel Craig got heavily injured during filming, that's one of the reasons everything feels so casual. I honestly also believe they should start working more with professionell stunt men - Craig wanted to do most stunts himself which got him injured during a ton of shoots. A lot of stunts are difficult to do, hence you have professionals on set. I was a little baffled when he told me in my interview that he broke his leg while jumping through a window on the other side of the street where I was like - you guys have a 300M Dollar budget, why not use a stunt person? :)

And yeah, the fight with Safin was so lame, I don't know why they even bothered; it was Daniel Craig's final fight, why pit him against someone as physically unintimidating as Safin? I don' say that often but I wish they had done a Die Another Day repeat: one bad guy against Bond (in this case, Primo), the other one against the main Bond girl (in this case, Madeline vs Safin).

I think Craig had said after Spectre that he'd rather slash his wrists than play another Bond. And despite Spectre being somewhat disliked by the general public, I find it a very good movie with an excellent ending. This is the way that Craig's era should've ended. But when forced to play another Bond, I bet he said 'okay, but I die at the end', which is a thorough show of disrespect for fans. It was worth going to see it for the rather good beginning and, above all, for Ana de Arma's absolutely brilliant performance. I wish she got involved in a better Bond movie.
