Stoneshard is a game I took a look at a few weeks ago that people really liked to see, so I decided to bring it back for a bit of a playthrough. Come join me as I take on this challenging classically-inspired dungeon crawler/RPG.

About this game:
Stoneshard is a challenging turn-based RPG set in an open world. Experience the unforgiving life of a medieval mercenary: travel across the war-torn kingdom, fulfill contracts, fight, mend your wounds and develop your character without any restrictions. - Ігри
Thanks for all the love on Ep 1 everyone, I really appreciate it!
You're welcome.
Great episode. You can close the door next time :)
Great idea for a series. M0ar pls.
Love you Egg
Well it IS THE Northernlion, any video you make becomes golden content
" I don't break crates and barrels"
-Hunger
"Sees enemy closing in"
"Stuffs face full of bread"
NL: "This is a game that requires a little bit of patience."
Whelp,...well be stuck on the tutorial for a while...
The prologue was a really good setting in difficulty and atmosphere. After the prologue, the game is split between roughly 70% exploration and survival, to 30% dungeon crawling. The game is early access so a lot of polish and content is still in the works of course. I'd say buy the game currently if you really enjoy RPGs of this genre or challenging games.
I personally love the game, even in its current state. The food, hydration, injuries, morale, sanity, inventory, and travel time all add gameplay mechanics that make you take your time with the game and add that extra flair of roleplay. It's a game with satisfying progression similar to the Souls games and also Darkest Dungeon.
There's definitely a dearth of content at the moment though. You make it to the second town, do the quests there, and then you're on generic quests forever. It's good, I'm looking forward to what they've got in the future, but I can't really encourage people to get this game right now, it's like ten hours of gameplay and it feels incomplete... because it is.
@@patliao556 Yeah that's totally fair. That's why I can't fully recommend it either unless you love these types of games.
It's basically a sandbox after a 10 hours of playing and figuring out optimal starting paths. Hopefully a difficulty scaling update comes soon to add more challenges.
I believe a boss update is next on their timeline
Was in total agreement, and was playing a lot myself, until I saw that a future update would probably wipe my save. The game is just too grindy to have to start over from 0 at some arbitrary point, so I'm waiting until more progress has been made.
@@hivemonkey3 if you are grinding, it's either a personal preference or you fell for the reddit meme hard. Doing nothing but contracts immediately, no hunting no grinding, is 100% viable.
@@aaronteo3082 I agree, and should have been clearer. The quests themselves are fun for me in the context of a larger progression, but if my progress is doomed to be erased before more meaningful content is created then the quests become a grind to me. Totally respect that some may find quest-loot-repeat to be fufilling, I'm not one of them.
NL: "I don't have any inventory space, but let's keep this this dirty rag and a bunch of white weapons I'm never going to use"
This right here triggered me so much xD
Also NL: I'll have you know i have spent many of hours in Diablo back in the day
And then He wasted all that healing Salve for some useless mazes that Made my heart hurt
@@BeyondXeon95 maybe, but its why we like is video, the small mistake makes you feel less bad when you make mistakes since he doesn't prerecord until he doesn't mess up
"Hunger is gonna be a real issue" Oh if only he didn't decide early on that he woudn't break boxes because other games have proven that it's not worth it :(
It is a stupid chorey game mechanic tho. I don't resent him for valueing his time better.
@@rodlopes4327 Is it a better use of time to break the boxes and search around for potentially useful items, or to repeatedly play the prologue because you keep dying and you're too lazy to do so?
@@RobertS122 Neither, it's a better use of time to not have them in game, so you don't have to waste time clicking hundreds of crates per game which may or may not do something.
@@rodlopes4327 and thats the rub, this game isn't made for that play style. Its made for the folks who LIKE scrounging to stay alive, and yes those people exist.
it was weird hearing him say that about the boxes because I went back and watched the NL Tries immediately before this, and he was finding so much stuff when he broke them
game: looks A LOT like a roguelike, more so than any games NL has played in recent or distant memory
NL: this is not a roguelike
yeah i dont think my man NL has ever played a true roguelike like Dungeon crawl stonesoup and the likes.
@@protobraid2327 or the original. Rogue
To be fair, I think he said 'rogue-lite', which is accurate.
@@patliao556 Yes i checked the tapes he does indeed say roguelite. but image a
scale Rogue>Rogue-Like>Rogue-lite he is pointing out that its not a Rogue-lite but this is clearly a Rogue-Like is that not by definition also a Rogue-Like?
@@protobraid2327 Yeah, he's basically wrong, I'm just pointing out that by the merest technicality he is correct. This game is extremely rogue-like in its navigation and tactical design, he's just not very roguelike in its 'story' or procedural elements, which are limited.
So we are creating our character.
CREATE CHARACTER [not available in Beta]
I can already see the pay out on the next video.
Except you can create a character in beta. The game is just saying that specific character is unavailable in beta
@@austinlee4366 I beg to differ. You kind of just pick from the existing 4 characters to start your playthrough with.. No customisation. I feel like the 5th option is exactly as it says while being greyed out; The ability to create your own character
Hey NL just wanted to say thanks for the new variety in content recently. Been a watcher for like 8 years now & only more invested now. Keep it up brother!
Very excited to see more of this game! Loved it on NL tries
Well done, NL. It's good to see a traditional roguelike on the channel! I'm really hoping that Stoneshard turns out to be a great game.
NL has fallen so deep into the franchise that he can't even recognize a rouge-LIKE the genre that literally spawned rogue-lights lol
Anyone else still not over that Frostpunk win. Like Geez that was incredible. This series seems really good so far too.
Very happy this has become a series
Love this!! A few more episodes, and i think I'm going to have to buy it 😏 you always make games look so good!
Let’s go, dude!!! I dig watching Mathas play this. Excited NL is gonna give it a shot!!!
NL ~ "I refuse to smash barrels in a video game"
NL ~ "Well we are hungry, and there's not really anything we can do about it. Please game have mercy!"
Me ~ "NL, never swallow your pride and play the game right, your pain is way too tasty"
Very fun episode. I'm really looking forward to more. If this game lasts, it feels like a great one for banter, since it's turn based.
Damn, amazing job getting through the first floors and boss, that was very well done.
Awesome! I've been waiting for this!
time to binge this series
Love it. Kind a challenging game Sir!
Nice pick for a serie Egg I love it.
love to see you give this game another whirl since they've made a lot of huge updates
northernlion convinced me to get this game when his first video came out and now he's doing a hecking series, I gotta go out of my way to like it. Time to sit back and watch the Egglord make some mistakes and sip my coffee
I think NL would have had a much easier time if he didn't keep specing into different weapons then immediately abandoning them. Picking up skills in a tree, like great sword, usually gives flat chance to hit, a reduction in fumbles or damage.
Higher porpoise at 29:50 killed me!
NL , I too have played similar games like this and struggled, keep up the good fight!
I'M POGGED OUT OF MY FUCKIN' MIND. I love this game and I'm glad it's getting a series.
I love this.
CODOR CODOR CODOR CODOR CODOR
CLOSE THE DOOR, DAMN IT CLOSE THE DOOR,
and then you can just safely rest NL
Hodor's lesser known cousin?
08:44 - Ah yes, the curse of random loot. You get a cool two-handed sword and shortly after you find a dope looking shield! XD
You sold me on this game already.
Let’s go bois! I was waiting for this to release
This game is so fun! Probably work visiting in a year once it’s out or has way more content. You hit a wall pretty quick here. I’ll still watch everything tho omg
NL I have to say I love your watermark logo thing you put on the thumbnail I was scrolling past and I saw that red logo and realised it was you playing this game never would have otherwise.
He's actually done it! Didn't think it could be done
why does every enemy on the floor just find you in that one room? lol
Because he's making a lot of noise, which in turns attracts enemies, which causes him to make more noise.
To add to what the other guy said, he could have just closed the door at any point. Suspicious enemies will try to go to whatever noise they heard/whatever they saw of you but won't open doors. So long as they aren't actively hostile you're good.
NessOnett8 How many enemies are in this floor though? Jesus christ.
Man, this game looks awesome.
Yes NL, give me even more Stoneshard.
BLESSED EGG. I cant wait to see how nl handles this game hahaha.
Edit: Oh my god. This man. 10 seconds in. He turns it around. Truly. We are in the golden age of the egg. That was a master class NL.
Edit edit: AND THEN IT FLIPS AGAIN HAHAHAHA. Pure fucking gold. Ty nl. :)
Watching NL actively not loot is more painful than missing any tinted rock or Spire misplay
Stone's hard, man, keep it up.
EDIT: 2:02 Holy fuck, that's some swolecam right there.
This game seems REALLY good/interesting, it gives off a huge Diablo vibe with the aesthetic and looting imo... Can tell this is going to be a good series and i can't wait for it to release so i can play it
The level up play at the start... hes ascending and he just started
I saw the first 5 minutes. Got the game and played it. Now I can't wait for NL to reach the boss. Took me 3 tries. Egg will "love" it.
Short answer: No
Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Comment
Dude the prologue is easy, of course he can
This game is very promising, waiting for full version
Nice work NL. I'd love to see you complete at least 1 or 2 quests but I think it might require a bit of grinding. Also range seems to be way easier.
*claps* you did it Northern Lion, you beat the tutorial!
More like Stoneshart.
*face palm*
"Cone helmet...oh this is worth way more!" IT'S A DIRECT UPGRADE JUST PUT ON THE **METAL HELMET** ARGHHHH
"This is worth WAY more!" proceeds to keep the 282 gold item over the 610 gold one, NL, why do you hurt me like this.
i paused and laughed
Honestly, you are better off not beating the tutorial, because it's the best part of the game for now.
comment
Yep, I've been waiting for this game for years and the tutorial was heavenly bliss, but everything after is just... not.
@@Syfmuna it's weird right? People really really liked the tutorial/demo and then the development budget after that went into making.... things completely different from the tutorial? Many of which don't even improve the game? I assume most people who enjoyed the tutorial would be happy if it were just a tavern and selecting quests with more dungeons instead of the wonky overworld.
@@TyrantNomad I'm pretty sure there's going to be more to the overworld than there is now. Both towns have a stable boy who seems like he's supposed to sell you horses, and all the question marks on the map are campsites except one.
There was always supposed to be an overworld. It was literally pitched to kickstarter as "open world roguelike RPG". They just need to spruce it up a bit and make it less annoying.
@@CJTheInvader yeah it's in early-access so improvements are to be expected; and you are correct in that they said it from the start that they would move it towards a more open-ended design. However, I'd also argue that that's not what many of the backers backed it for, nor what got the game the attention it got. People strongly liked the prologue and if what is out now in early-access were out as the demo half a year ago instead - I'd wager against it finding the success it did back then.
I certainly hope it all works out in the end but the premise on its own seems really hard to work with - open-world grid movement, single-character RPG.
As it stands the open-world feels sparse and uninteresting, even walking through two map tiles over - repeatedly so - is really boring. The hand-crafted areas are nice, as are the dungeons but that's pretty much it.
What can the horses be? Fast-travel between cities? That would help a bit, but you'd still have to walk from and to objectives. Faster travel on the grid? That would hardly improve upon walking repeatedly through uninteresting forests over and over again. Travelling directly through the map grid? Then you bypass the open-world as a whole and although the issue is mainly fixed it reinforces the weakness of that aspect.
Most of the fans are hopeful it seems - and plenty of reviews boast about the game's potential. I was hopeful myself when the prologue came out, but with the new content I've moved over to being rather cautious about the title and where it's heading although I still wish it all works out in the end.
He's done it.
Good game, got it after your first time playing it. For anyone thinking of getting I’d either buy it now or wait a bit. The game has good bones but since it’s still in beta it needs to be flesh out a bit.
this videos worth a thousand likes !!!
I can't even get past this prologue. Ahhhh.
Sometimes when going onto a level it pulls the whole floor in your direction. Pretty sure that's not how it's supposed to work but it's happened to me
REST my dude
YEAH, BOIIIIII. HE LISTENED TO US! SERIES!!!!!
Fuck yessss favorite content creator favorite new game let’s GO
I hope nl does a double upload of this
HELL YES, my demands have been met
A stoneshard series!
I made a Pogchamp face irl.
Stone Chard
Edit: I’m glad I’m not the only one who says that their brain is “stretching”
Reminds me of Shiren the Wanderer, only with a much more complicated system. Kinda wanna try it, now, money permitting~
dreams really do come true
Theres a little "refresh" icon under your main weapon that allows you to switch weapons " also a free carry slot. Also is there a reason he wont drop his starting loin cloth
W swtiches loadouts!
33:00
"oh thats how you get in there, i understand now."
*does not in fact understand*
So i recently watched the video where you tried this game and i got to say that you really did a way better job their then here, i am sure some of it is down to luck but i think you should really reconsider looking into the crates and stuff for supplies, sure some will be empty but others will probably have needed medicine and food, and remember the classic adage from Darkest Dungeon. "Packs laden with Loot are often low on supplies."
you dont get to take any of the items with you, so you don't have to worry about stacking your inventory with sellable items
There isn't a lot of content in the game right now, I don't know how long this series will be
so his missed the chest with all kinds of weapons huh... no wonder it started of so hard for him
"It's NOT a rogue-lite"
Hmm, there must be some kind of word for this kind of game then.
HMMMM.
Yes, the word is CRPG, which he says directly before saying it's not a rogue-lite...
@@DeepFriedOreoOffline The tutorial plays out like a proper roguelike. Apparently it becomes more CRPGish later on. Even then it still plays more like C:DDA than Baldurs Gate.
it's roguelike with a story
@@MrBillybobyeah No, it's not a roguelike 🤣
@@Darkxanderpresents I love how people who play a game somehow feel like they know more, and have the right to re-brand games, when the developer has clear and obvious statements about their inspiration for the game. But please, spout more opinions as to why you're right and the creator of the game is wrong.
oh yeah man. We asked and we got! love you Egg Boi
My man.
I don't understand how NL can otherwise play games like XCOM with relative proficiency, and then this game is played like this is the second strategy game he's ever played.
18:30 Ok, Stone Shard, this is a bit much. Is there a bug that alerts every enemy on the floor to the players presence?
34:45 He's learning to look out for telegraphed attacks.
39:24
Game: Ok, what if I just read the dialogue for you-
NL: Skip.
Yes
nice.
Fuck yeah dude good job
Break those barrels and boxes tho
"Don't expect me to break crates and barrels"
At least try it for a bit, what if they give out pretty useful things?
They give lots of food and arrows, so it is worth it.
@@killisys too bad he skipped the bow and mangled his weapon and skill choices
Ohhhhhh What's going to kill NL in the next episode? Is it:
a.) A vicious pack of wolves?
b.) A group of bandits that will surround him?
or C.) The actual dungeon he is going to try to make his way to in the first place?
d.) Poor inventory management, mangled skill choices, ignorance of game mechanics and flippant attitude?
e.) STONKS
This game is a lot at once
I just love how he's judging what to equip by gold value alone - IN THE PROLOGUE. That's just peak comedy right there.
This game is really hard, i couldnt even beat the first boss after 5 hours of gameplay
Yo need to take more re4 tutorials of inventory management my fried xP
LETSSS GOOOOOOOO
How do you impose you're social status?
Internet:*Tpose*
NL, an intellect:*Drinks water in front of the bat monstrosity*
'Please, use my full name; WIlliam Nillerson.'
love and hate this game, you finally get through the prologue with a build that's decent then your reset to a new char and it starts all over again, I finally got the the 2nd boss yesterday but no way i was beating it, tip: use the inn the save your progress
if you hit w you can have two loadouts it takes one turn to switch
It's not a big deal.
You had a Stoneshart
You threw away the Ether Inhaler.
The rat kept ending your run,
and now the start of your new series is absolutely cursed.
Yup, I'm all about this.
Not breaking Barrels and Crates = No Key Meta 2.0 lol.
Egg standing in every AOE D:
I played the tutorial and tought it was easy, but the real game is killing me so much
