    That's how my St. Stephens Barbisio is. The style and process for the color makes the hat not very snappy and so when snapped is rather flat. Nice to know its a style and process not a defunct.

    I’ve been watching all of your videos and have now reshaped 4 fedoras that had become a bit wild. The strong hold hairspray works brilliant. I’ve got a Lock & Co fedora that I assume has been shellaced so use this as my guide. Love your craftsmanship 😎

      Darryl Hurd thank you kindly, Darryl, compliments like that mean a lot to me, I just wing it as I go along, never plan anything except the title..sometimes it works out well...other times my son enters the room and starts distracting me and it all turns to comedy, but I never edit,and usually it goes well..

    Hi Kevin I love your videos, I am in the UK & also have a large head 63cm
    I would love to wear a hat, but can't find a style to suit me, I always think hats look great on everyone but me Can you offer any advice on what to try please?
    There are no hat shops in my area and due to my size I am limited to buying off the internet
    Thanks again for your great video collection. Dave

    Another awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing. Any tips on how to do the same for a Panama hat? I've heard using an iron and damp cloth but can a steamer be used? Thanks!

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  9 років тому +1

      +DavesTrumpet exactly the same method for straws, panama will require some stiffening first, without that, u won't get any results. It's that hard shell that u put on the hat that holds it in place, u soften it w steam,letting it cool into place..same exact method for panama hats, but the stiffener is essential.u may need a bit more with straw.
      btw
      no water, never..
      no ironing, u can use an iron for something flat, flat brims are rare,I've never had a single instance where Ive used one for hat shaping,it comes in handy for thing like hat bands..
      nope, no iron, use steam from an iron, get the area teamed up and then shape it as it cools into place..holding it as it cools. straws are the same, just tougher, a lot tougher,and without the spray,forget it...u do more damage than good, don't even attempt to steam without stiffening a straw, unless the hat is already stiff, then u can skip that step.

    • @DavesTrumpet
      @DavesTrumpet 9 років тому

      +quadrogong1111 Makes a lot of sense. I've noticed on some of my straws that they get sticky when you steam them (obviously coated) and others don't. Time for me to get some hair spray!!!! Thanks again!

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  9 років тому

      +DavesTrumpet yeah, get it stiff, let it dry, then steam...don't touch the wet straw, let it air dry or use a fan, try not to get too many fingerprints,and keep the wet areas off the tabletop.
      Don't use "Aqua Net" brand and use the ultra super hold,strongest stuff they have,only aerosol cans..all hats have this coating, straw or felt,
      it's called "sizing", it comes in can from a company called Manhatco in NYC, but the hair spray is cheaper and easier to get in a rush, and for jobs like shaping hats by hand, it works quite well,with almost no recognizable difference.
      Most of it depends on spraying evenly, not too gloppy or drippy, use light coats..if u have decent technique, both products will look and feel the same

    Can a flange wear out? Is it better to keep the flange up or down?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  2 роки тому

      Yes, it gets flat and soft, keep it snapped up when you’re not wearing it,and keep the brim off the surface of the tabletop, no weight on the brim

    • @DarthVader-ib7tl
      @DarthVader-ib7tl 7 років тому +1

      pete wright My method was steaming the front brim, and then leave the back of the hat hanging off the ledge of a table with the front brim on the surface of the table and something heavy placed onto the front brim to hold it, then use a chair and lean it against the back of the hat to make sure you get that extra curve. Leave it for an hour or so and it worked for me.

    I have 2 Borsalino Marco's (the downbrim crusher's). I really like em. But i've been wondering if JJ's workshop could convert the brim on one to a standard Fedora(snap type brim to wear either way? Whadda ya think? Thanks again for these Vids. Always very informative.

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  6 років тому

      Yes, a reflange. He can reblock the brim to snap
      but most likely the brim will look slightly shorter,
      1/4" or so.
      $45. Plus $14.50 shipping
      I can also do it free with steam and stiffener,no blocks,just $14.50, results are just not as good, blocking it is like remanufacturing the brim
      Up to u! Kev

    Kevin, is it possible to shape a flat brim into a fedora trilby shape because the hat I was sent looks like an Indiana Jones style fedora as opposed to the picture shown on Amazon?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  3 роки тому

      I’m not exactly sure what you’re dealing with, but I doubt it. I’d just return it, get a refund. even on a first grade quality hat that’s not an easy job w just steam, it would require a total,reflanging of the brim by a hatmaker.. there are a lot of hats online that look good in photos but when u get them home, the brim doesn’t snap or lay straight, usually because many steps are skipped,and it can be a fit issue too. But most of the time, it’s just not a snap brim, like in your case. Definitely not. Not even in the best case scenario
      I can help talk u through a sale if u want to find a good half price hat on JJ hat centers back room sale, u can find a $200 hat for $100. ...or a $175 hat for $87.50 etc

      +coolkayaker1 hi, i'm familiar with that hat, looks like a custom job, open crown, beaver finish, pencil roll on the brim, Beavers are like $300, we can order something similar without that rolled brim, more of a fedora brim,like i wear, similar..we have hats on our website with the round crown,but different brim sizes,colors,bands..not this exact hat.
      we do not stock this hat, no. but we could order something similar, if u wanted one that looked just like this, easiet to go custom, but that is like $300,

      +quadrogong1111 Wow, you sure know your hats. Thanks, Kevin. I cant afford three-hundred for a hat, and like u said, that wont even get me Billys since his is custom. Half that, I can afford. So I may stick with something more like u wear. U rock those upturned snaps, for sure. Thank you again. 👍🏻
