    Maybe it was mentioned in the comments, but I'd like to add that you can clearly hear Kaathe "typical" breathing sound ( noice of Primordial Serpents like back in dark souls 1). You can hear it when you walk from the center of Firelink Shrine to the right hand side of the tunnel to the blacksmith and onto where Yoel and Yuria are located. I guess it is the final proof Kaathe is behind the Yuria's questline.

    It also just goes to show you why you are greeted as a "lord of hollows" by Yuria so openly. You have five sigils, more than could be regularly kept on a normal hollow. It appears three may have been a maximum (speculation) as that's all you receive from Anri.
    I'm still not 100% convinced the Age of Dark is the best ending however... I mean let's look at Dark Souls 1. When you became a Darkwraith of Kaathe how did you improve your covenant standing? Feeding Humanity to Kaathe. Plus, with how untrustworthy the game makes any form of serpent-like creature, telling us they are beings of greed and creatures that could have been dragons but never will be, it signals to me some form of innate spite towards anything non-serpentlike.
    Also, as a semi-related note you can see statues of what appear to be Primordial serpents in a slightly humanoid shape wearing robes in the Grand Archives. The area is well renowned for being a location of great torture and corrupting experiments.
    I'm just not 100% convinced. The worst part is that Yuria, from the beginning, tries to see if she can pull you by strings during her request for you to kill Orbeck for basically no reason. Then, strangely enough, there is no other request to kill anyone else. To me it's just a manipulative attempt to see if you are willing to kill on command.

      According to Aldrich and The Cathedral of The Deep, the next natural age is an age of water. So, perhaps an age of darkness is actually an unnatural age that we can choose to start

      +Komodo Dargon Just because he saw a deep blue, like the depths of sea or whatever it says on his soul, doesn't mean it's an Age of Water. They deepest parts of the sea are called the Abyss, which as you should know is related to humanity and the Age of Dark.

    • @wanderingbufoon
      @wanderingbufoon 8 років тому +16

      no. the reason why she wants you to kill orbeck is because he can possibly usurp you as he MAY also be a dark lord. dark lord or not, he is irrelevant as she is seeking the lord of hollows. yes it is different. kaathe was proven wrong in his search of the TRUE path in DS1. he only saw half of the truth. age of man truly does come after the age of gods. however as light exists, so should dark. they are intertwined so whether you choose to link or not, will make no difference. being the lord of hollows does. not only have you forsaken linking the fire, you took it for yourself. not only do you only bear the dark soul within you, you are now a vessel of the light soul. this way, the endless cycle breaks. kaathe and framf wouldve been BOTH right and BOTH wrong as their answer is only half right. hollows were the true form of non dragon beings. it was the hollows who took the lord souls. so "make londor whole again" could mean obtaining all 4 lord souls.

      Orbeck is an assassin for Vinheim Dragon School, Vinheim Dragon School is derived from Seath The Scaleless (at the very least in name), and The Sable Church are not fond of the Old Gods / Lords. Perhaps the church and school are opposing forces, and I strongly believe that Yuria pushed for us (the character) to kill Orbeck before he may have killed her. Although it would have been nifty to see them battle it out like Pate and Creighton had in Dark Souls 2.

    • @wanderingbufoon
      @wanderingbufoon 8 років тому

      CrimsonNutcase
      that may be possible but she is under the impression that he may be a dark lord himself and could potentially ruin it since her path requires a ritual in which you must marry Anri and take his/her dark soul. If Orbeck were truly a dark lord and were on the path of letting the flame die, you cannot usurp the first flame.

    But anri shows up at the end of game cut scene in usurpation of fire. Shes kneeling with the hollows on the top right side of the hollows kneeling to you. you can tell its her cause she/he is wearing the elite armor set

    Dude, if Dark Souls was taught in college, you'd be a great professor. Really good presentations. Subbed for more. Also, if you haven't done it yet, can you make one of these about the lore around The Consumed King Oceiros? Thanks.
    On a sadder note, if DS3 is the final DS game FROM does, then revelations about the coming of the Age of Dark or the World Submerged that Aldrich envisioned becomes moot. So here's hoping they don't just let all this lore go to waste and make more games.

    The three mentors of the Sable Church of Londor...
    The three sealers of New Londo...
    One of whom left to aid the undead of Blighttown.
    Yulva brought her healing miracles to bring comfort to those in the Blighted city.
    Yulva... Yuria.
    I'm seeing some connections here.
    Also, Hollows can never die. You can see Anri in the final cutscene bowing before you.
    Oh, and, reading through the description of the Silvercat Ring kind of disproves your whole Kaathe theory.
    "In the Age of the Gods, or possibly just following it."
    Showing that the Age of the Gods has long since passed.
    It seems that the act of linking the fire is seen now only as some sort of rite of honour.
    After all, the Firelink armor states that
    "It exists as a symbol of the great Lords and the noble act of linking the fire, though it is no more than an empty husk."
    But is it truly the armor that it describes, or the act itself?

    seeing how every NPC "of Londor" in DS3 isn't all that hollow,but rather spreading hollowing ,or even accepting it as the natural progress of things.
    The way Yuria sets you up as the "Lord" (or Savior) of Hollows, seems to me like the "blackpilled" answer of "linking the fire"

    anri is not a victim. s/he's like you, recruited with some shady business, but after that voluntarly in the whole thing. s/he admires you, if not really love with you, in the dialogue in the church of yorshka s/he's grateful to you, and s/he admires you for your strength and courage and whatnot. s/he does'nt "die" in the rite of awowal, s/he undead anyway. s/he's also kneeling to you with the other hollows in the final cutscene.

    • @Raaplexis55
      @Raaplexis55 8 років тому

      +Simon Aldridge What is in Lordran? New Londo. New Londo is where Kaathe has set up shop by shepherding the Abyss and turning Hollows into his warriors to end the Gods and their Age of Fire. Which is where you get the Dark Hand.
      There is also Anor Londo, which is where you have to stab Anri in the fucking face, and that was in Lordran as well.
      The entirety of Dark Souls 3, is Lordran, just after presumably a countless number of years, and because of the Gods fucking with shit and time being distorted, the lands are shifting merging, but it is still Lordran.

    VERY GOOD
    this video made me think deeper about the lord of hollows ending and the way it recontextualizes the other endings. i was thinking about the main macguffin of the game, making the lords return to their thrones because they won't do it themselves. playing through the game, you find that each of the lords of cinder have their own reasons for not wanting to come back: aldrich has a pretty good thing going eating gwyndolin, yhorm doesn't want any more destruction from linking the flame, lorian and lothric never believed in keeping the sick world going any longer and linked the fire against their will, and the abyss watchers are too busy with their fight club. by killing them and linking the flame, you are prolonging the suffering of the world, but the hollows of londor throw a wrench in the works. i'm still not sure which ending is the "good" ending, or if that idea even makes sense for this game/series, but i'm leaning towards the lord of hollows ending after this video.
    looking forward to more great videos!

    Great vid and insights! :) I always assumed that the pilgrims we see praying across the game came to pray to prince Lothric. They always face Lothric when outside of it, and within Lothric they face the castle. Seeing as Yoel pleads for death when we first meet him, it seems to me that he was pleading for prince Lothric to link the fire, because in an age of fire the undead can die human. Perhaps this desire to be human again rather than hollow is the reason for his exile?
    Also dully note that at 23:56, on the right side of the screen near the elbow, Anri is kneeling beside the other hollows, so perhaps the marriage was less of a trap than implied.
    Oh for a bit of constructive criticism, perhaps you can more often show video footage during your narrative that is relevant to your story, like you did when you showed some dialouge with Yuria? As much as I enjoy seeing you, or anyone else, get their shit pushed in by Cathedral knights or Black knights, its more of a distraction than a bonus most of the time X'D

      +SmoughTown Kaathe has a tendency to do that. From Oolacile to New Londo to the Sable Church. He does say in DS1 that he believes we will succeed where everyone else he advised, has failed. Maybe becoming Chaotic Evil in both previous locations wasn't part of his plan at all, just a consequence of not having a vision once he gave them hints and powers...

    Hmm...I'd say Velka is somehow involved in this too. Dark Souls I mentioned that she is the highest authority on curses and is the only one who can truly lift them. Plus, vow of silence is one of her miracles if I remember correctly. On top of that, her pardoners were all powerful swordsmen and she favoured intellect over faith in her followers. I have nothing of substance towards this theory, but it really seems likely that she is involved. I say this also because she has fought against the old gods before (ocuult rebellion) and because she is the Goddess of Sin. Londor & Lothric have the commonality of the presense of primordial serpents. In Lothric, we also see a Gold Dragon & a Silver Dragon. Before even all of that, we saw the infestations of those things which claimed the bodies of Iudex Gundyr & several hollows who were mixed in with the others. Ash is a significant element of these happenings, and no matter a linking or a renouncement of the flame, we know the cycle returns always.
    Aldas from DS2 told us as much. But Aldas also proved the impossible by transpositioning a dragon into existence.
    Now, look at the descriptions of the Gold & Silver serpent rings. Past tense now, people.

  • @Draugrborn.
    @Draugrborn. 8 років тому +2

    You seem to have missed a few things. Kaathe was already in Londor. Londor can't really be a successor of itself. Londor seems to be New Londo's new moniker. Just as Drang refers to Drangleic and Irithyll refers to Anor Londo.Through time, New Londo must have become a city home to many Hollows. Another thing you missed is that we did not Sacrifice Anri; we merely stole her dark sigils. He/She can be seen in the ending cutscene for the Usurpation of Fire kneeling before us. I couldn't resist leaving a comment and I apologize for possibly proving you incorrect.

      If we took Anri's dark sigils, and dark sigils are likely what keeps the hollows of Londor sane, then we did sacrifice Anri.
      At any rate, you can argue the circumstances all you want, but you perform a ritual sacrifice.

      @@alexgroot2508Well yes, but that doesn't mean the abyss doesn't weaken over time. It can be reset, with the linking of the flame by the time we got there in Ds1, it's been dead for at least 100 years.
      But people can settle in ruins, and build something out of it. We don't hear of Balder, Berenike, or Zena. Nor the 5 finger Delta. I suppose the hollows from those places, could have traveled to Lordran, and made something of a symbiotic relationship with whatever remained on the abyss.

While we do visit Anor Londo in Irithyll in the game, I suppose it is conceivable that some geography craziness has happened between the games. That or perhaps it was a later settlement by survivors from New Londo. I'm interested to see if we ever get any solid answers (probably not).

But he must have lost his way and got stuck in a trap made by the Lothric Knights.

    • @teamshesh
      @teamshesh 8 років тому +5

      +slightlytwistedagain Horace was a child who escaped the clutches of Aldrich, as well as Anri. This is why they are pursuing him when you meet them on the road of Sacrifices. Both of them are hollows, however its clear that Horace is farther along in this decaying process evident through his inability to articulate words. He is however still sane at this point, showed by inviting you to the blue sentinels. Think of Horace like the the cleric from dark souls 1 who travels with Rhea of Thorolund. He can't talk because he is gripping the threshold of his humanity. Sometime between your victory with the Deacons of the Deep and the Abyss Watchers, he loses his grip, thus losing his sanity, perhaps he felt this change before hand and created distance between Anri to protect her, or perhaps he simply got lost due to his dwindling state. Unfortunately as Dark Souls goes, there are no happy endings.

      +SmoughTown good video...was thinking about the third and eldest sister here since I can't find anything on her so far. Is it possible that the third sister is actually Velka? I've been reading item/wpn etc descriptions from Dark Souls 1 and found some interesting connections, for instance...
      1. Velkas Rapier mentioning her being an inhuman swordswoman : (It is no mere symbol to be sure; the pardoner is an inhuman swordsman, and wields this enchanted blade with special sword technique)
      2. Velkas Talisman : Medium for casting miracles of the Gods.
      This black tuft of hair that serves as a talisman belongs to Velka, Goddess of Sin. It casts miracles not by drawing upon faith, but intelligence.
      There's also 'The mask of Velka', 'Black Cleric Robe', 'Karmic Justice', 'Vow of Silence', 'Book of the guilty' and 'Judgment Set'. All these items support my theory.
      ..still, just a theory though :)

    • @SmoughTown

      +teamshesh 8988 mm... I was pretty sure Horice's tongue was cut out at some point and that's the reason for him not being able to speak? It says so in one item description, just can't remember which one.. aww well. Another thing to remark about Horice's fate is that he's right below the crumbling bridge where that horde of skellys all of sudden shows up. Taking this into consideration, I believe Horace lost his life on that bridge, tipping him over to the 'hollow' side (much like Tarkus in DS1). Now.. you can ask yourself, why just Horace and not Anri too? Well...when you meet Anri for the second time in the Catacombs, she has obviously chosen NOT to cross the bridge as you find her on the ledge above.

    Is it possible that Rosaria may be the eldest daughter, first founder of the Sable Church? It could make sense, as a callout to how Kaathe was the leader for the red covenant in Dark Souls 1, and the third sister's presence could be noted by her absence in the final cutscene. When you look at Rosaria, trapped in her bedchamber, she never seems to move, and never really wants to. She is wearing a black dress, and the little slug-men around her that she cares for could be assumed to be hollows. Her missing tongue may be a reference to the fact that the hollows of Londor have taken the vows of silence. This would also raise an interesting question, as it could be argued that Rosaria is a descendant of Gwynevere, and if Yuria and Liliane are her sisters, they could all possibly be descendants of the line of Gwyn.

    When Gwyn originally harnessed the First Flame, he extinguished all Dark within himself and this created an unnatural state of unbalance. Essentially, the Flame burned off its own energy rather than the Dark that serves as its antithesis. From that point, humans have sacrificed themselves to Link the Fire while oblivious to the fact that they are perpetuating Gwyn's wrongful Link within the Flame.
    Now, regarding the current state of things, Prince Lothric was supposed to be sacrificed to the First Flame to perpetuate the current Age of Fire but failed in this endeavor, leading to an Age of Dark (as seen in the Untended Graves). However, in an unprecedented event, there was a small resurgence of Fire from the ashes of the First Flame, this brought a degree of illumination to the world alongside summoning the previous Lords of Cinder and the Unkindled to truly Link the Fire. Unkindled are Undead, like in the previous Dark Souls installments, but, from what I gather, the Unkindled suffer from a more rudimentary state of Undeath. Specifically, they seem to be representative of a collective failure to Link the Fire and thus lack the human aspect of Dark, the "sustenance" of the Flame and therefore do not suffer Hollowing, which subjects them to a lesser existence. Now, the inhabitants of Londor, however, are the more familiar variety of Undead as they are afflicted with Hollowing but, unlike any prior civilization, they embrace this curse as the inherent identity of humankind. As a result, they have experimented with the curse and have discerned new means of harnessing its innate power and have even discovered the true nature of the cycles.
    Essentially, they wish to restore the balance of the world, alongside elevating themselves to a position of power.
    To accomplish this, however, they require a champion, a true monarch and worthy soul to Link the Fire. This is the player character. As an Unkindled, you are incapable of actually linking the Fire despite being worthy of doing so due to your lack of Humanity (Dark). You are discovered by Londor, who recognize your potential, and they use their newfound power to afflict you with the more traditional state of Undeath in the form of the Dark Sigil. They even have you perform a spiteful gesture to Gwyn by performing a ritual sacrifice upon his tomb. Regardless, when you reach the First Flame, Gwyn's soul, alongside those who followed (coalesced as the Soul of Cinder), is purged from the Flame and the Dark Sigil, representative of the endless Dark of Humanity, now serves as the natural "sustenance" of the Flame.
    What happens from that point is anybody's guess. If you still want my take, judging from the clip, the Hollows seem to have re-attained at least a degree of sentience suggesting that the mindless hollowing has been banished but they now accept the inherent Dark within themselves and will, potentially, live and die with a functional state of mind as Dark and Light have now achieved a state of balance.
    Even the deceased Anri of Astora can be seen, revived, in this ending.
