I can drink to that after all the amazing writing skills of the DS lore matched with the guy who wrote the game of thrones books it gonna be filled with dread and chaos I can’t wait lol.
Instead of just retiring to Arch Dragon Peak, it seems more likely that it was akin to a spiritual journey of some sort. The different functions of The Path of the Dragon emote (which is a classic meditation pose), and the quests of Oceiros and Hawkwood all suggest that.
That stuff still kinda pisses me off. DrkS3 is full of obvious cut content. I think I remember reading somewhere that Kaathe was supposed to show up in the flesh at the very top of Lothric Castle, as a winged snake. That would kind of explain the winged serpents in the leaked screenshots. And damnit, that Kiln/Dreg Heap screenshot from way back when looked so awesome.
Hey 5months late but to answer you, he is show in statues as praise to him.The lighting of the flame which Kathe or Frampt (i forget) wants you to do in the DS1.So YEARS have gone by and people continuously lighting the flame it eventually grows into tradition/religion.Check out Vaatividya he delves deep into.
This is pretty much how I see it too. I just love how From Soft never really specifies anything, and let's us piece things together with the clues they leave lying around. That approach, especially environmental storytelling, will keep the Dark Souls lore mysterious and extra rich forever. They could definitely improve their storytelling in other areas, but it's almost perfect as is.
A couple questions: 1. If the first born founded the kingdom of Lothric then how does he eventually end up at arch dragon peak? 2. And what about Oceiros? Does he take the first borns place after he leaves? 3. is Oceiros obsessed with dragons because of the first born?
1. It's likely he just grew out of it. Wanted to retire to a place where he could hang with his homies. He really seems like a very free-spirited kind of guy( I mean he rides dragons), and probably didn't enjoy ruling, and took his out when he found it. My theory, is when his sister arrived, more poised to rule. 2. Yeah he was probably a package deal with Gwynevere, and probably some sort of political marriage, as were fairly custom in "medieval" times. 3. Certainly seems likely, or perhaps from Gwynevere. I'm sure either brother or sister likely took what they could from Anor Londo when they left. One of them probably took things from the Duke's Archives. But the firstborn being a big dragon fan boy probably played it's part too.
The Ashen Hollow I like the theory of Gwen taking over the throne but if Oceiros was political then who was Oceiros to the first born? Idk Fun theory tho thanks for the response! Great Video!
@@huntershurtliff9543 maybe oceiros is the descendant of the Nameless king, and by wanting to recover the past glory of his ancestors turn himself into a dragon.
@@TheAshenHollow I think he retired after noticing his warriors were going hollow (even transforming to Pus of Man). He took those willing to transform to dragons with himself as he didn't care much about rekindling of the flame. Gwynevere was said to be married to Flann, so it could be they are responsible for starting Lothric bloodline ?
Maybe the nameless king was going to be eaten by Aldrich, seeing as how in game the only way you get to arch dragon peak is through the irythill dungeon, idk though.
Man, your videos are works of art. Is such a different experience to play the game now that I've learned so much more about the lore. Thank you so much
Hell yeah I love that you’re still putting out fresh content after all these years! Also AshenHollow you’re home now, you don’t have to say “Dive On-In” anymore... *DIVE ON IN*
Well.... somehow I missed this video, and of course it was about one of my favorite peeps in the lore. I love these rekindled videos because I always hear a theory or a lore angle that I didn't notice. AND Because of these videos that I've been watching quite often, I have been inspired to reply the entire series, and take my time to look around and think, instead of running around like a mad man evading invaders and, well, about everything else lol. Again, Mr. Jake the Ashen Hollow, THANK YOU for what you do. Your videos are great, I can see you rising high on the UA-cam ladder one day....when Elden Ring releases later on, just keep doing what your doing. If not anyone else, I'll be with you on the next journey.
Nice video, as always, I like your stuff. I love dark souls lore but I can't help feel like we're being taken for a ride with it. I remember seeing interviews where Miyazaki says he learned his writing style from reading western style fantasies that were so badly translated that he couldn't really follow what's going on. That coupled with his own team reporting they rarely understand the game's story or lore and I have to wonder if there really are answers to the questions we keep asking or if Miyazaki just threw a bunch of stuff against the wall and let it stick trusting us to squint hard enough until a semi coherent picture formed. Beyond that I remember reading how the early form of the game was radically different with time cycles, dragons in the sky, and other features. The dragons actually are relevant to this since from the first game the story has been hinting that humans (either naturally or through the pus of man) do turn into dragons and the world might be resetting back to the Age of Ancients. However with the resulting game needing many late changes due to the success of Bloodborne and essentially coming through a blender late in development, I'm not sure how much of the content actually lends itself to a coherent story and how much just got thrown together to meet the publisher's requirements. It's just kind of sad that DS3 which was supposed to be the end of the series doesn't really answer any of these questions or provide a fitting explanation for what has really been going on all this time in the world of Dark Souls.
I totally agree on his Kingship in Lothric. Made a reddit post about it a while back that approaches the theory from a couple different angles. To sum up the main points: I placed Nameless as the second King, with Gwynevere being the founder in a similar, but opposite way to your thoughts. I placed Firegod Flann as the first King for some timeline reasons related to Oceiros and how he becomes King later on. The Cathedral Knight Shield depicts a bird-like creature that was a symbol of a former king. This "bird" is likely the Stormdrake, which adds up well with what you're saying about Nameless being King of Lothric. Everything you said about the Sunlight Warriors and their dragon-taming culture is spot on to me. For any who are interested: www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/5vrfgg/lothrics_history_and_the_three_kings_firegod/
So Ashen do you think that the Nameless king is a hollow? Or mad, I like to see his face up close as he doesn’t look like he has flesh on his face or eyeballs. What do you think made him switch sides?.
Am I the only one questioning about WHY the Firstborn allied himself to the dragons? I can't shake the idea that all is related to Filianore off my mind
If he wasn’t king of lothric, we would be the nameless prince right? I’ve never pictured him as king but it totally makes sense, then (if we assume it is Gwyneviere) comes to lothric after fleeing Anor londo, NK leaves her as queen regent of the kingdom, she marries and has children with oceiros, gives birth to lothric, who they name the kingdom after
I really do enjoy these videos they are spectacular at delving into more story of one of the best game series ever. And one thing I would like to ask could you do something with Midir like a small lore episode or something. I would really like to see your opinion on this topic since Midir was "raised" by the gods. So I'm curious now is this what really expunged the firstborn? Or was it something else.
Good video. One question though: if Gwyn's firstborn allied with dragons and was kicked out because of it, then founded Lothric, why did Lothric used to hunt dragons? Maybe I just got confused, so I wanted to ask for clarification
Ive come to this conclusion myself. One item ive seen you missed in both videos is the cathedral knight greatshield. I believe this almost confirms this theory without any room for doubt.
I’m not sure how the emblem of an old king being a bird gazing skyward means there is no room to doubt the Firstborn was a king of Lothric when there is nothing at the game directly suggesting that. That emblem could mean a dozen different things
This would put into question Gundyr's armor resembling that of a former king. But not entirely. Oceiros is clearly not king any more. This theory makes a lot of sense. Although I think it equally possible the kingdom was founded by his followers, having broken their ties from Anor Londo, and the firstborn stayed with his dragons, watching closely, a guardian deity of sorts. Aside from clues he isn't really mentioned in Lothric and I find that odd if he was indeed the founding King. I fully agree they were his followers, which finally makes sense about the sunlight medals and the royalty being obsessed with making a perfect heir (of dragons), a child of dragons. Tho this can also be seen as a result of Oceiros having inherited Seathe's insanity, which we know tends to happen when someone reads too much of Seathe's books... Seathe was also obsessed with his sexperiments. I always wondered what was up with the Drakeblood Knights, worshippers of the blood of dragons? Perhaps this was also an influence on the notion of a dragon heir. Did they drink dragon blood like the followers of Farron? or is it more of a blood as lineage thing?
Another great vid! I have read though that in Japanese "king" and "lord" in how it's used here are interchangeable, but I am not fluent in Japanese so idk for certain. My personal favorite theory is the Nameless King/Gwyn's Firstborn being Faraam (maybe taking that identity before establishing Lothric). Do you think you'll ever make a video on this topic?
One thing I've never understood is the reason he was banished and his history expunged. Gwyn himself allied with a dragon(seath) and even granted him the title of Duke. So its understood that dragons can be allied with. If it wasnt gwyn that ommited his name, who else would have power to completely wiped a dragon slaying god of war, son of the lord of light name from history.
Does Arch Dragon Peak really overlook Lothric? Isn't it the fading of the fire which causes those particular locations to converge around Lothric, dwelling of the now supposed linker of the flame, Prince Lothric?
Bit late to the video.. but didnt seaths archives in ds1 become the grand archives in ds3? When we arrive in anor londo is ds1 the nameless king is already gone.. so until seaths archives become the grand archives and then eventually lothric what do you think the nameless king done? Or where did he go?
Also the broken person at the sunlight altars has the dragonslayer swordspear and the Nameless King is the only person with that weapon. Therefore, Nameless King is the first born
Well no the statue is an asset from Dark Souls 1 and the weapon on that statue is a dragon slayers spear given to the firstborn by Gwyn and then later returned to Gwyns grave as a burial gift by his now nameless firstborn.
Regular Slasher no it was the spear, sunlight blade is a spell. The sword spear is the Kings own design and barely looks similar to the spear shown on the statue that much more looks akin to the spear of Ornstein.
@@NorthSeaRaider Are you sure? I just played Dark Souls 1 like two days ago and the description on the sunlight blade said it was a burial gift returned to Gwyn by the first born. It is the only spell I ever use too
Great video(and makes alot of sense) but what surprised me the most is some people still don't think TNK is the Firstborn? Are they that attached to the theory of Solaire? I've never bought into that one, even taking DS3 out of the equation.
Why keep it smashed, with its pieces scattered if it was looted from Lordran? Also Lothric kingdom doesn't seem as old as Lordran, so even the latter hypotesis is dubious 🤔
no i disagree , oceiros probably went in contact with the nameless king to start morphing into a dragon , that;s why the key to reach archdragon peak is in his room
So the ancient Dragons were not his enemy. Who was or were his TRUE enemy? Who did he war with? Also, you speculate how he just decided to leave. But why? He might have as well gotten hollow curse and decided to leave just like Vendrick did, or he decided to defend the Archdragon Peak for some reason. Maybe he had to defend the Peak from his true enemies. :3
Most plausible theory of all. Ties in very well with the Gwyneviere/Rosaria/Dancer theories. Why do not you make a video like the one you made about the lore but this time have it be about how you see the true story of Dark Souls to be?
Lothric seems to have been founded by descendants or servants of the gods to Shepard humans to link the flame, something the nameless king cares nothing for. Maybe the knights were once his warriors, but that's as far as it goes. You even see many lothric knights abandon the country for the path of the dragon.
Ds3 also has a heavy theme of the cyclical nature of all things, and how events repeat in one form or another. See oceiros and his parallel with seathe for example. It's possible the lothric knights shared the same journey of war and regret the firstborn did. Would love to hear your thoughts!
well there is a theory that lothric is gwynever and gwyndolins child and personal i think that lorian is gwynever and the firstborns child but he was lucky enough to not have the affects of incest then ocelotte is oceiros’s kid
So he was the king of lothric Gwyndolyn became the king of Lordran and these two countries converged in ds3 due to the unlinking of the fire is what i think im starting to understand? Oh wait but then theres lothric and lorian hm hmmm mmm i am in a bit of a pickle..
To add on to this I believe that Kaathe was actually the one to convince the first born that dragons were not their enemies. Hence why we see statues of Kaathe in lothric.
The statue of the first born is not holding his lighting sword spear that is said to be the first of it's kind, the statue is holding the spear of ornstein, plot twist, ornstein is the first born lol jk
This... may very well be true. Stripped of deific stature, demoted to a knight (just the royal family must've known of this), maybe "bullied" and "ostracized" by his father too, he left Anor Londo to seek the way of the dragon. (Gwindolyn replaces him with an illusion before all the other gods left AL) He makes it to Archdragon peak and becomes an apprentice of the WoD, leaving behind his spear and armor. Because he tamed and rode a dragon he is then given the title of King (of dragons). Even the bit saying that Ornstein left AL to search for the nameless king (Orstein's armor, ds3) was really hinting at him searching for proper recognition. 🤔🤨 Naaah... we'll never know. Miyazaki is as troll as Kojima 😁😏
The only issue I have with this theory is that Lothric is famous for producing champions worthy of linking the fire, it doesn't make sense to me that the Nameless King would agree to this tradition and let his kingdom follow in Gwyn's footsteps and continue his legacy considering he was banished by Gwyn. To me its more likely that Lothric is simply experiencing the same plotline because the world is always in a cycle and certain events are doomed to repeat. As for his title of King, I'd say that simply refers to him being the King of Archdragon Peak and his subjects being the dragon-kin and men-serpents. The Nameless King has warriors in the men-serpents and drakeblood knights, he has a clergy in the wheelchair-bound viper summoners and a scholar class in the many dead dragonkin laying about the area in a meditative pose. This is a minor issue, but I also think its weird that The Nameless King would be Lothric's founder, because that would imply Oceiros is his descendant, thus making the relations between Gwynevere and Oceiros incestuous, yes i am aware that incest was practiced in medieval and ancient scenarios. But I don't think Miyazaki would include that kind of thing in his lore.
I have to say, I hate the lore of Dark Souls 3. One of the main selling points of Dark Souls 1 was that you could make your own canon with respect to the Chosen Undead, Dark Souls 2 then went out of it's way to keep that intact by saying the stuff that happened there is so far in the future that nobody even remembers what happened. Dark Souls 3 then goes out of it's way to ignore the efforts of Dark Souls 1 and 2 and tell you you were wrong about everything, including the things you actually did in game and shit all over established facts in the series. Did you kill Gwyndolin out of protest for him blatantly lying to you? Fuck you! No you didn't! He has to still be alive for Aldrich to eat. Did you kill Patches because he's a scumbag? Fuck you! No you didn't! He's the only undead to survive from the first age to the last (which already makes no sense because that means he has to survive multiple centuries where the undead curse has faded, meaning he would have died of old age thousands of times over). Similar "fuck you"s exist with regards to Andre. Do you have any theories about who Yorshka is? Well, I hope your actions in Dark Souls 1 don't create a paradox about those theories... Did you feel like a badass, beating Ornstein and Smough? Did you feel your experience was complete having met all four of Gwyn's knights if you did the DLC? Well fuck you! You never met Ornstein. That was definitely an illusion. Did you have any theories about who Gwyn's firstborn son is? Well fuck you, you're wrong! It's this dude who hasn't existed in the series before right now in Dark Souls 3. I fully believe Dark Souls 3 is just as much of a piss-take and shits all over fans of the series exactly as much as Metal Gear Solid 4 did to fans of that series.
Oh look another entitled narcissist liking their own comment and angry things aren't going their way. Consider getting off the breast milk and growing up, lol.
I like your videos but you get ridiculous with some of your theories. I don’t necessarily mean this one, but the ones like “Velka is Izalith and the Furtive Pygmy” are borderline irritating to watch. Having said that, I watch all your Souls videos either way, so keep up the good work.
The Ashen Hollow Don’t get me wrong, I like 90%+ of your theories, and find them very entertaining, but some of them are just a little out there for me. For example, I just don’t like the idea of two of the characters shown in the intro cinematic to Dark Souls being the same person, but also a third character, somehow. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just don’t agree. Again though, I will watch the videos either way, over and over again as I play whichever Souls game I am playing.
Once again the Ashen Hollow does not disappoint with his high quality videos.

Great video(and makes alot of sense) but what surprised me the most is some people still don't think TNK is the Firstborn? Are they that attached to the theory of Solaire? I've never bought into that one, even taking DS3 out of the equation.
Yep. You'd be surprised how many people can't let that theory go, lol!
This video had a weird English captions. It looked like it was copied from a file while neglecting the encoding error
Why was his statue in lothric smashed though? Looted from lordran or was he king of lothric before he switched sides?
Why keep it smashed, with its pieces scattered if it was looted from Lordran? Also Lothric kingdom doesn't seem as old as Lordran, so even the latter hypotesis is dubious 🤔
@@alessandrobaggi6129 agreed. It doesn't add up.
I think the only way to debunk this lore is the fact that lothric was built over lordran
I wanna say Nameless King being King of lothric is a huge stretch but honestly, it's dark souls. If there's evidence to it, I'll tease the idea
I’m fairly sure the Drakebloods have something to do with the founding of Lothric
no i disagree , oceiros probably went in contact with the nameless king to start morphing into a dragon , that;s why the key to reach archdragon peak is in his room
why is he a zombie? did the bell revive him? are lorian and lorthric his children/grandchildren?
So the ancient Dragons were not his enemy. Who was or were his TRUE enemy? Who did he war with?
Also, you speculate how he just decided to leave. But why? He might have as well gotten hollow curse and decided to leave just like Vendrick did, or he decided to defend the Archdragon Peak for some reason. Maybe he had to defend the Peak from his true enemies. :3
If only you also made bloodborne lore........
Most plausible theory of all. Ties in very well with the Gwyneviere/Rosaria/Dancer theories. Why do not you make a video like the one you made about the lore but this time have it be about how you see the true story of Dark Souls to be?
Can’t help but chum at that intro
I'm leaving this video for a special time
New video yes
Love the video, but I personally think there is much more evidence that the nameless king has been at archdragon peak and didnt found lothric
Why don't you make a theory about the mothers of the children of gwyn?
So that mean that Oceiros, Lothric, Lorian and Ocelotte are direct descendants of the Firstborn.
well there is a theory that lothric is gwynever and gwyndolins child and personal i think that lorian is gwynever and the firstborns child but he was lucky enough to not have the affects of incest then ocelotte is oceiros’s kid
English subtitles for this video are some kind of hieroglyphs lol
Yeah idk what happened or how to change it, lol.
Broo i miss your videos
I feel like I'm out of my quarantine funk and ready to be pumping out all kinds of videos, not just Dark Souls! Keep your eyes peeled! =D
I had never thought about this yet it seems so right, thanks man.
This would also explain the Size of the two Prince's i guess
So he was the king of lothric Gwyndolyn became the king of Lordran and these two countries converged in ds3 due to the unlinking of the fire is what i think im starting to understand? Oh wait but then theres lothric and lorian hm hmmm mmm i am in a bit of a pickle..
Umm what is up with title thing?
I have a question, so why did he became friends with dragons? What truth did he realizes?
He realized they weren't his enemy. I don't think it really goes into detail about it.
@@Lord_Raptor it would be cool a theory about that... To know why did he betray all the believes of his father.
To add on to this I believe that Kaathe was actually the one to convince the first born that dragons were not their enemies. Hence why we see statues of Kaathe in lothric.
Love your videos but I need subtitles to understand, please add.
They're processing now, so they should be available in a few hours! =]
@@TheAshenHollow Thank you for your consideration. Bless you.
Hey man, there's something terribly wrong with the subtitles on this video ;_;
Im still really annoyed that Solaire is canonically not the firstborn now. In my opinion that is still way cooler
This is giving me some Alabama vibes.
I put your video to 666 likes. Thanks for the lore. Good one!
Naaah... we'll never know. Miyazaki is as troll as Kojima 😁😏
@@alessandrobaggi6129 still, a solid fuckin theory though my dude lol
*sniff sniff sniff* dark souls lore *snifffffffffff* in 2020?
Still waiting for you to mix me up & just say hey everyone its jake.
What the hell is happening with the subtitles?
I still want to know who was the wife of Gwyn. Hmmmm
Can someone traslate the subtitles...
#Gwendidnothingwrong
If i'm not wrong, Miyazaki is supposed to be "friends" with Kojima; or at least they know each other and they must've talked a few times... 🤔😏
I think he is actually Faraam
the English subtitles are just giving me a bunch of junk data.
Are they? Hmm, let me try to figure that out. Thanks for the heads up! =]
just another boring recycle content for milking views , nothing new here
Oh look another entitled narcissist liking their own comment and angry things aren't going their way.
If you don't like theorizing why are you watching Dark Souls videos? Da fuq?!
Again though, I will watch the videos either way, over and over again as I play whichever Souls game I am playing.
why are captions just jibberish?
This is all fake news. We all know that Solaire is the first born XD
Some big ol' jumps here. Speculation is all good but this all seems loose at best. What of Oceiros?
As someone who has taken plenty of big speculative jumps in Dark Souls lore this is far from a stretch, lol.
@@TheAshenHollow Then what of Oceiros?
