"This was their finest hour" or "Their finest hour" is a famous historic speech delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on June 18, 1940.
Churchill reflected on the dire situation in France and talked about the looming Nazi invasion of the British Isles. But most of all, with his unshaken determination he rallied the British People and prepared the Nation for resistance: If we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.
"This was their finest hour" was the last of three major speeches given around the period of the Battle of France (the others two being "Blood, toil, tears, and sweat" speech of 13 May, and ""We shall fight on the beaches" speech of 4 June). Events developed dramatically over the five-week period, and although broadly similar in themes, each speech addressed a different military and diplomatic context.

Yes he did Henderson. When he couldn't get air superiority and knew were not yet capable of attacking he turned his attention to Russisa.
He thought Britain would be very easy but when he realised he'd have to commit he went after the bigger fish.

I fear that we, Britain, and what is currently the free world are now fast approaching a time of peril that we must stand up to and make, for ourselves and history, our own "finest hour."

@James Henderson That isn't true. He hadn't expected to invade the UK because he thought that the conquest of France would end the war in Europe, but Operation Sea Lion was organized when that assumption proved false. Executing Sea Lion while planning Barbarossa wouldn't have been that unusual. There were numerous times during the war that the Allies fought one battle while planning the next.

As a Frenchman, I remember his speech after the collapse of our country. on the BBC. He said to hang on and never despair because after darkness, dawn will come. He had spoken in French and his speech gave a lot of hope to the occupied French. Like De Gaulle, Winston Churchill was a fighter who never agreed to surrender. İ know that currently with the current situation of turkey you wouldn't agree with me but in 1930s turkey was a modern European nation unlike now and the only reason that turkey was a modern European nation was Atatürk. Without him there wouldn't be a turkey. There would be a tsarist regime in Russia without Atatürk defeating allies in Çanakkale strait which would mean İstanbul and warshaw would be occupied by Russia. So he was one of the greatest men in the history. And if you look at those thousand years between 874 and 1874 you will see a lot more great man for history

At the time Hitler was running roughshod over everyone and everything in Europe and looked unstoppable. The legendary leader who turned his entire nation into heroic fighters with two memorable short speeches. Spoken with calm and confidence, they carried the day and the war not with raised voice and roaring passion, but with arguments that inspired by their incomparable logic and their uplifting call for human pride and national honor.

People say all this bad stuff about Churchill but if it weren't for him we would more than likely be speaking German under Nazi rule so before you start talking our of your rear think about that for a moment and realise he saved us and is one of the biggest heroes in the world

A friend, born in 1944,, was set out of the cities as many children were, en masse, to avoid the bombing of London. Because she survived she was the best friend I ever had. She died last year aged 79. I will never forget her.

Extremely well-presented. The accompanying photo montage did justice to these immortal words. Others who have streamed this historic gem failed to accord it the attention and respect the speech deserved. Well done, I say!

It's true he was a pretty poor student at school and one of his teachers said to him u will never amount to anything and he replied u are wrong one day when the country is in a series fix it will fall on me to lead us out of trouble. In 1940 when they called on him to be leader he said I've always known this day would cum I feel like I'm walking with destiny.

1:25 the young and/or illinformed may find these words insulting. Nay. These are words of respect and solidarity of the true meanings of freedom. Sir Winston Churchill, the greatest individual in European history. He, alone, made a stand, when others plead "neutrality" or worse. Never forget that fact.
