Yep. Every platoon has the one "funny guy" who can make a joke out of anything. Absolutely necessary to keep morale up, but if he gets capped...that's a dark day for everybody in the unit. That's when you go from "going to a deployment" to "counting down the days until you get to leave." We lost our guys one month into a 13-month deployment. It never bounced back to what it was before. Cleaning out their bunks broke everybody.

I’m in my 30’s now and I had a late cousin who served in the marines during Iraqi Freedom. I remember his stories he would tell. Mainly his horrible memories from Fallujah. At the time as a child I looked up to him like he was a wise warrior, little did I know he was just a kid. I see the faces of the men and women they send over seas and it really hurts my soul as I get older. Old men start wars so young men and women can fight and die in them.
This guy reminds me of my one good friend that passed last year. Always had somethin funny to say at the worst times. Always brought smiles and all that.

"Single shot Freddy" is actually pretty wise to the fundamentals of a successful guerilla resistance. Just knowing there's some guy out there who regularly is pointing a gun in your direction is a huge psychological impact and minimal risk. They don't even have to hit anything

Despite officially the story being that we weren't in Afghanistan as a Militant force until after 9/11 the US government was partially responsible for the Taliban being placed as the government power in Afghanistan back in the 90s right up until the Non-Extradition laws we told them to place into affect, prevented our government from successfully apprehending Bin Laden after he fled to Afghanistan.

Most of the dudes are just homies trying to keep people safe. Crap goes down in war, and it's crap people really shouldn't have to put up with anywhere. But somebodies gonna fight, and somebodies gotta fight them back. It's not possible to tell perfectly all the time who's right or wrong. At some point some people just gotta do their job, and having mostly good guys doing a job limits how horrible of things will actually get done. So whether you think the US gov is in the wrong or whoever else, most soldiers deserve respect for taking on a terrible job. I particularly like the US ones though, since they're in charge of keeping me safe.

Despite officially the story being that we weren't in Afghanistan as a Militant force until after 9/11 the US government was partially responsible for the Taliban being placed as the government power in Afghanistan back in the 90s right up until the Non-Extradition laws we told them to place into affect, prevented our government from successfully apprehending Bin Laden after he fled to Afghanistan.

Most of the dudes are just homies trying to keep people safe. Crap goes down in war, and it's crap people really shouldn't have to put up with anywhere. But somebodies gonna fight, and somebodies gotta fight them back. It's not possible to tell perfectly all the time who's right or wrong. At some point some people just gotta do their job, and having mostly good guys doing a job limits how horrible of things will actually get done. So whether you think the US gov is in the wrong or whoever else, most soldiers deserve respect for taking on a terrible job. I particularly like the US ones though, since they're in charge of keeping me safe.

I remember hearing a story about my great grandpa in ww2 he was with the 101st airborne in Bastogne and at some point while they were being shot at by the Germans he said that they had terrible aim, to which someone else pointed out the hole in his helmet (he was fine and didn’t get hurt from it) to which he responded with “if they had better aim they would’ve killed me” he survived the war and I always enjoyed stories from him. Miss you

All i got was a few dozen different links to the same video, the original interview about the star wars collection and no mention of being in the service. everything after that was a link to this clip from the video because of all the researching i put into trying to locate sgt hunter. even adding abc7 which directed me to all the false hits of sgt james hunter that kept cropping up even ones abc7 covered.
