What I love about this one is that it doesn't go too much into details or theories as to not confuse beginners with excessive, and pointless for the time being, information!
Been a fan of TES since the release of TES 2 Daggerfall back when I was in high school, it's amazing how popular the series has gotten and how much lore has been made for the series. Great video by the way.
The amount of time between the release of Arena and Skyrim will likely be close to the amount of time between Skyrim and ESVI. I bought Skyrim in high school, and now I’m nearly 30, which blows my mind.
Daggerfall was my gateway drug into TES and it blew my mind when I played it for the first time. I had no inkling of the scope of the game or what to expect from it. My college buddy lent me his copy and right there on the box was written "Welcome to your new obsession". It was the first PC game I'd ever played and, having nothing but console JRPGs under my belt, my sense of awe and wonder was palpable. I could do practically ANYTHING in this world. It was such an enormous sandbox that I have yet to finish the main story line. Someday, King Lysandus,...someday I will finally free your tormented soul and close the marble jaws of Oblivion.
@@abhishekmajumder742 I've played the games for over a decade now, but understanding any lore other than "great war and empire" takes digesting LSD and Ketamine.
@@laboskie349 😂😂I get what you mean. IMO, I don’t think the lore is too hard to get into, but there is extensive knowledge to be learned. Example, the Second Era is personally one of my favorite era of ES Lore. That was the era when there was no Dragonborn emperor and with the death of the last Tsaeci potentate, the Interregnum began. It wasn’t until *hundreds* of years later that Hjalti Early-Beard was revealed to be a Dragonborn. When he came to the Ruby Throne, called himself Tiber Septim and relit the Dragon Fires, only then did the Third Era finally begin.
Honestly, I'm watching this video to help me familiarize myself with ES lore. Not because I've never played any games in the series, but because I want a refresher on the lore. Reason being, I want to create a D&D campaign based in this world.
I'm none of the above. I'm a 19year veteran of the Elder Scrolls and know a ton about the lore. But Im still watching this because I never get tired of just listening to people talk about Elder Scrolls.
i started playing skyrim like a week ago, have never played a second of the elder scrolls before then and i immediately understand why this game is still so iconic and popular. just cant believe i've been seeing memes and references to this series for years and never played it. thank you for the recap my friend

I've really only played Skyrim, my beloved, and finally decided to educate myself on the full history of Nirn and have already learned so much, like the differences between a daedra and a god and such, and that their planet is called Nirn, making nirnroot basically earthroot! So cool, thank you so much for taking the time to put this together
I came to know the elder scrolls when I first picked up a copy of morrowind in late middle school, and I’ve always had incredibly fond memories since. Many years later, I’m looking to plan a d&d game rooted in the world of the elder scrolls. After much research, this video laid out a TON of information I didn’t even realize and I’ve played at least 4 of the games from start to finish! So excited, and couldn’t be more thankful. Your video was phenomenal, thank you sir!
Dude, this was fantastic. I’ve studied Elder Scrolls Lore for years. Your delivery of this lore was among the best I’ve seen. I can’t wait to watch your next video. Thank you.
The Elder Scrolls is truly under-appreciated. The fact that they baked very logical concepts like censorship in written texts, or biases into their NPC dialogues. This lore is one of the last bastions where the creators only treat it with love, and they tend to it like a garden.
@@Cloudy_Jones without eso the franchise would have died. Not to mention the fact that eso is the most expansive game by far, and its worldbuilding quality is pretty damn good.
You are doing the gods' work here friend, thank you! I had a decent understanding of the lore but you've sufficiently filled in the holes in my knowledge.
Masterpiece of a summary! Thank you for doing this! Best Regards: Someone who's played Skyrim since it came out but had no idea of what the hell was going on until now
Big compliment on your ability to summarize and make references. I have watched many many hours of TES lore videos, but I was always lacking sources that summarize a bit. You do that very well (aedra vs. dadrea vs. magna ge for example). It's important for learning things to have summaries that help you compress knowledge into concepts. So, thank you for not just rambling on and stuffing information down our content hungry brains but actually taking the time to structure it in a way that makes it easy to follow.
Fun fact: when he was talking about books being censored, he is most likely talking about “The Real Barenziah” which is a biography about one of the most famous Dunmer Queens who came to power just as the Septim Dynasty was founded. The censored portion was actually censored not “by the church” in game but by people rating the game as the particular potion that got censored was a very graphic sex scene between Barenziah and Talos. They just used the church excuse I imagine as a way to explain the blip in the story and also possibly as a jab at the people who made them censor it in the first place.
I discovered TES with skyrim like 2 weeks ago and it immediately took me into it, the lore only from one game frome one "country?" seemed so enormous that I wanted badly to know more about the elder scrolls so thank you so much for this video, it's incredible and knowing I'm just scratching the surface and all of that is only from Tamriel's perspective is breathtaking
This was brilliantly done and you're intro was magnificent, it looked professional, like something you'd find at the opening of a history program on TV!

Thank you for this video! I've always loved Skyrim and the little lore I know from just playing but I've really been wanting to get more into the ES series as a whole recently. I love video game lore, history and theories. This video was very helpful and has me even more in the mood to try Oblivion and Morrowind!
For aspiring Elder Scrolls fans, this is the most significant Elder Scrolls video lore on UA-cam. The channel is deserving of more subscribers than those well-known channels that provide lore videos.
I have just watched this video in one sitting and absolutely loved it! Exactly what I was looking for to understand the depth of ES lore. Thank you so much for taking the time to research this and put it into a format where lazy people like me can come along and just consume the whole thing! 😂 It’s clear it was no small undertaking! I’m going to share it with my ESO guild mates and a few other massive Elder scrolls fans, before I jump straight into the next one. Best regards.
Also I totally agree about the lore’s complexity being part of what makes it so interesting. I LOVE how each in-game source has to be read within its context, and a lot of it is propaganda that you have to study to see the underlying biases. It’s got so many layers that give it way more substance than a typical game/series.

I came here looking for more info on the current political geography (during Skyrim) because I hadn't realized how fractured the Empire was. My main games being Morrowind and more recently Oblivion. So wow, yeah, this lays such a strong groundwork to explain later Lore. Well done!

loved the video. I've payed both skyrim and oblivion multiple times as a kid but mostly just glossed over the lore. Now that I've finally got interested in the lore aspect of the game, your video really helped me understand the timeline.
Great video well paced and good length. Particularly loved the explanation of the elder scrolls themselves and why the game is called that, almost one to quote
I've watched a lot of lore videos of TES and I wanted to see a video of the timeline all laid out and pieced together. You knocked it outta the park with this video!!! This video is what I'll recommend to my friends or anyone else who are also interested in learning the history. Man, wonderful video!! I played only Skyrim for years, but never really studied the lore in-depth. Now I want to, because of this channel. Just watched the whole video and taking notes, this is a wonderful introduction. Thankyou so much!!
This is great! Thank you very much. I'm not new to the games by any means, but I've played them out of order and was very confused. Is there a way that subtitles could be added? I'm awful at accents, and at some points, I can't understand what is being said.
I can’t explain his grateful I am for this video. I search for lore but all I get is stuff about the Great War or the oblivion crisis but when you literally don’t know anything about the game that kinda stuff just goes over your head. I can’t wait to learn more now I know the basics!
Wait, so why do we know so little about the Akaveri people if their descendants directly ruled over Tamriel, proclaimed the new era, and their inability to rule caused the conflict of Elder Scrolls Online. And we don't even know if they were snake people or not?
Honestly it's always worth keeping in mind a general overview of lore for any series, especially any series with a great deal of both depth and uncertainty to said lore. I think most of us who have knowledge of the lore, to one degree or another, have our general interpretations of what we consider likely but it's worth remembering that, even if our preferred interpretation is strong, nothing is really set in stone until it is canon.
In skyrim, I belive that regardless of the outcome of the Civil War, the worship of talos will return, but I'm curious if Bethesda will make the stormcloak win will be canonical, or if the imperial win will be canonical, I personally like the idea of the skyrim independence and then allied with hammerfell, and they fight the thalmor
I can't really see the stomrcloaks alighing themselves with elves of any sort, especially some who were briefly but recently part of the Thalmor. It would be really cool tho!
I'm only new to Morrowind. I've journeyed through Cyrodiil & Skyrim. I heard there's a "Skywind" in the making, so maybe i'll get to see it in a more crisp form
As someone who spends hours on Fandom pages I appreciate the work you put into this for the other people to learn about the ES lore it's so interesting can't wait for es 6 and for my pc peeps skywind and skyblivion

That is a cool theory woah
It helped to put timestamps to facts too, I didn't knew the whole Ysgramor to dwarven disappearance happened in the merethic era. I thought it was much more recent.
@@Braziliansyrah same I found that out from a coworker who has played all the games he's 54 and I'm 21 so it's nice to find someone no matter the age that you can talk to about stuff that is this in depth

How was playing Daggerfall for the first time back then? I’d image it was unlike anything else.
Try nodded DaggerFall Unity. It's free and will run on a ten year old laptop.
You will be around your 50 when es6 comes out😭😭😭

As. ESO fan yep. Cant bring myself to play that single player trash.
Holy shit, the amount of effort in this, good shit.

No other medieval fantasy universe does lore quite like Elder Scrolls. Tamriel has a little bit of everything and is so varied in its worldbuilding.

Even as an Elder Scrolls Enthusiast, I enjoyed watching through this lore series, and I even learned somethings!
The Elder Scrolls is truly under-appreciated. The fact that they baked very logical concepts like censorship in written texts, or biases into their NPC dialogues. This lore is one of the last bastions where the creators only treat it with love, and they tend to it like a garden.
Until you play ESO
"Whoops! Can't show THAT in a Christian manga!"
It was a Khajit named Therris, not Talos
I discovered TES with skyrim like 2 weeks ago and it immediately took me into it, the lore only from one game frome one "country?" seemed so enormous that I wanted badly to know more about the elder scrolls so thank you so much for this video, it's incredible and knowing I'm just scratching the surface and all of that is only from Tamriel's perspective is breathtaking

Wow. I've been playing these games for over twenty years, and I only just, on my current playthrough of Skyrim, realized how little I grasp the lore. I came here looking for more info on the current political geography (during Skyrim) because I hadn't realized how fractured the Empire was. My main games being Morrowind and more recently Oblivion. So wow, yeah, this lays such a strong groundwork to explain later Lore. Well done!
