Bananas became the potassium “go-to” food because of how easy they are. 0 prep required. And cheap. And while there are foods that have more potassium than bananas (at least 10 😎), bananas do have a substantial amount of potassium.
Love your videos! It would be awesome if you did a video examining the nutritional value of blended fruits/veggies (smoothies) vs eating the foods whole!
Thanks for another great video. Always learn something new. 😊 We love our bananas here in Tropical Far North Queensland (Australia) but will definately be adding more beet greens to my meals.
I'm confused because I bought a can of black eyed peas and it says 1 cup has 420mg, which is comprable to a banana. Other sources online vary too, and ive found some to suggest in the 400mg range and others in the 700mg range. What do I go by? Does it depend on the soil they are grown in?
#1 is beet greens?! Are we talking about the leafy green on the red beet or are we talking about the red beet itself? When I buy my red beets at Costco, the red beets are packaged without the leaf. Thanks for the list, Dr. Carvalho.
Waaaaoooo! Again a great video 🥳😎💪 THX for all of your work 🌹 I thought about to make an education to a nutritionist because I've read horrible much papers, blogs, saw videos and look at books for my special diet 🤯 ....and my real job is studiing economics 😭.... Sometimes it feels that I spend more time with learning about nutritions than about economy 😵 With your chanell it is much easier for me to get good information in a short, clear way ☺️ Thanks sooo much! 💖
I'm a little confused, if the extracellular potassium tests in the normal range, can you still be deficient in intracellular potassium? I consume no where near the 4.7g RDI, and my serum levels are gold. Also have high systolic pressure, which makes me think potassium.
Potatoes? As for beans, canned, the highest potassium content per cup in every grocery store I've shopped is unsalted/no salt added black beans at 900-1000 mg. Canned Lima or white beans are about 1/2 or 2/3 that at most.
I still don't understand how to reach 4700mg/day, or even 3500... I have to eat 3-4 avacados per day? or 6 cups of adamame? I usually only eat 1-2 smaller meals per day, and I'm not very good at cooking..
Dairy also has a good amount of potassium: milk, yogurt, cottage cheese etc, like 200mg per serving I believe. I think eating a mix of foods with varying levels of potassium content will help you get a good daily level. Low sodium V8 juice also is very high in potassium. So, a mix of potassium content foods and beverages every day can help you in a more balanced diet kind of way. Plus, the kidneys keep a tight reign on our body potassium levels so even if you're not eating a ton of potassium rich foods daily, you're potassium levels should be just fine if your kidneys are healthy and doing their job correctly.
Why measurements in cups and not grams? Are these cups of greens densely or loosely packed? Are they cooked greens or raw greens? Are where are the potatoes in this list? Cronometer tells me potatoes and lentils have similar potassium per cup. (Otherwise, good vid.)
4700mg is so high! My diet is full of foods high in potassium on a daily basis and I bet most days I don't hit 4700, so no surprise that in most being on the SAD... that 97% don't reach 4700... Too bad we don't fortify food with potassium like we do sodium!
There is no such thing as eating too much potassium from food. I've eaten up to almost 20 grams or 20,000 mg of potassium in one day from eating 7-8 pounds potatoes many times and do that all the time. Potatoes have more potassium than anything else per calorie, twice as much as bananas per calorie and 2-3 times as much as beans per calorie. You cannot get hyperkalemia from food unless you have kidney failure.
@@dj-fe4ck That's great. Everytime I eat too much potassium, my blood pressure falls overall and the difference between systolic and diastolic pressure narrows, leaving me dizzy and sleepy.
Ok, why are you eating that many potatoes in one day? I just have to ask, lol! I love potatoes!!! So, if this is a new diet, count me in! Also, adding salt to the potatoes helps your body balance out the potassium, I'm sure.

Hmm, think I'll have beans and an avocado for lunch today! Thanks for the info, Gil!
Oooh that sounds delicious!
Serious question How do you get beet greens? Do you have to buy all the bees to remove the green part?
#1 surprised me!! :)
Me too 😇
Yeah, when I saw the picture I thought it was beetroot, not the greens!
This is a great share! There are so many other great ways to get potassium in besides bananas!
Great video thanks! What about beet-ROOT?
Thank you for making another great video!

How about using potassium chloride along with sodium chloride??
You make a very similar tahini noise to me :D
Nice vid. Although I spent the whole video expecting potatoes 😅
potatoes were like #12 :)
Ahaaaa that explains it ☺️
Maybe potatoes should be baked and THEN refrigerated for a later meal.

Oh God, that BING sound within the first 10s of the video was ear-shattering.
Just to confirm then Gil, you don’t add ANY sodium to your potassium rich diet, but you DO add potassium chloride?
Someone please tell me the name of the song from the end of the video! I've been trying to find out for a while.
