  • "Religious scholar Reza Aslan took some serious issue on CNN Monday night with Bill Maher‘s commentary about Islamic violence and oppression. Maher ended his show last Friday by going after liberals for being silent about the violence and oppression that goes on in Muslim nations. Aslan said on CNN that Maher’s arguments are just very unsophisticated.
    He said these “facile arguments” might sound good, but not all Muslim nations are the same. Aslan explained that female mutilation is an African problem, not a Muslim one, and there are Muslim-majority nations where women are treated better and there are even female leaders."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

      Then you are a sadly misinformed little person. This man is a slanderous liar who makes frivolous arguments, muddies the water, and uses half-truths to mislead people about the real threat of Sunni Islamism.

      +ViNcEnT RoSs Uhh, what did he say that was false? He brilliantly points out that certain Christian African countries practice FGM which proves his point that Islam is not linked directly with certain practices. He even concedes that some of the actions by Saudi Arabia are wrong.

      +Ameen Younis I do agree with you :) Reza made some great points, but Islam haters refuse to believe what he says. They can't even provide facts that he is lying, which can prove to be difficult, mainly because Reza is telling the facts himself...

    If Reza Aslan could sit down with someone like Bill O'Reilly and tear him to shreds (intellectually, mind you) for a couple of hours, he would sell out the biggest stadiums in the world. I really admire him for using all this knowledge he's acquired over the years to expose the prejudice of such high-profile people.

      Gavan Cohen 1: The old Testament says almost word for word the same thing.
      2: "Idoloters" was not meant to include Christians, Jews or Zoroastrrins.
      3: There were rules of fair combat established, such as no killing of women, children or civilians.
      None of which excuses the killing of people based on religion. Killing people just because of their religion is never justified.
      But, a lot of things led up to Mohamed's war with the polytheists of Saudi Arabia. It should be read in context.
      And, of course, Jews and Christian did the same thing.

      Gavan Cohen Where are Christians and Jews told to fight people until they become Christian or Jew (or pay a special tax)?.....Q9:29, on the other hand (or any of surah 9, hell, any of quran).........Can't speak for you, but I'd rather live next to the person who prays I accept their faith, than the nutjob who is told to convert me, tax me, or kill me, if I reject theirs......Yeah those are equal faiths, pretty much identical, why all the fuss right?

      Amar Sahbi Taxes to government (in a non-Islamic state) have nothing to do with religion....LOL all religious followers taxed by government equally (in some countries, religious institutions aren't taxed at all, including muslim)....taxing based on income/wealth --- terrible comparison friend
      A good, pious, muslim government - they will tax you extra if you're not muslim, or throw you in jail if you refuse to pay jizya, or exile, or kill you....
      I'll let you try again if you want

    • @txforyoux2347
      @txforyoux2347 9 років тому +2

      Amar Sahbi You're comparing apples to oranges to try and excuse the religiously sanctioned extortion of islam.
      Your cowardly false equivalency to penalties EVERYBODY might have to pay (regardless of faith), only shows you can't defend islam...I thought islam better than the west in all ways? Yet you have no problem with muslim government taxing non-muslims extra for refusing to convert to islam, but wanting to stay ALIVE - comparing it to possible jail time?
      And the Islamic penalties for refusing to pay jizya, are far more harsh than any secular governments would be....they'll seize your property, your wife, your kids....your life.......
      Show me what tax code is as equally despicable as Q9:29?
      Please answer

    • @txforyoux2347
      @txforyoux2347 9 років тому +2

      Amar Sahbi You're trying to equivocate, so let me help you:
      Islamic Govt: Taxes all, plus it taxes non-muslims extra to remain alive and in the house of islam
      Secular Govt: Taxes all - based on income/wealth, irrelevant of faith
      Islamic penalty for refusal to pay jizya, or leave the land: death, enslavement, ...exile if you're lucky
      Secular penalty for refusal to pay taxes or leave the land: possible jail time, fine, probation, maybe deportation
      The question isn't why there is punishment for not paying taxes, quit trying to redefine it - The question is why islam singles out non-muslims to pay extra tax, simply for not being muslim, and wanting to stay alive?

      dstacey331 As an atheist who has made UA-cam videos about the mistaken thoughts of theists, I feel compelled to agree... but it's not entirely accurate. Belief in a god without evidence is certainly foolish if you value truth, but I imagine that theists like Reza value several things more than truth. He has publicly admitted that he doesn't agree with many of the thoughts and tenants of his fellow Muslims, but the errancy of his scripture still hasn't caused him to dismiss his faith because it's not all about whether his holy book is mistaken or even whether his god really exists.

    • @throwinhard
      @throwinhard 10 років тому +27

      Shouldn't truth be the most important value? To believe something contrary to facts or evidence is the very definition of irrational.

    • @Starcrash6984

      dstacey331
      Yeah, _we_ believe that truth ought to be most valued, which is why we're atheists. But there's nothing objectively more valuable about truth than things that aid survival such as social reputation or advancing one's career.
      Is John Green of the Vlogbrothers irrational? How about Francis Collins of the Human Genome project? It's true that irrationality and theism have a close relationship, but I don't believe that you have to be irrational to believe in a god.

    Why is Aslan getting so much hate? He's straight up correct. It's an Arab culture problem, not a Muslim religion problem. I'm neither Arab nor Muslim and I understand this. Blaming Islam for how horrible Iran et al are is like blaming Christianity for how horrible Nazi Germany was, or blaming atheist for how evil North Korea is. Religion doesn't make governments evil, it's simply a convenient way to sway people to your perspective by slowly feeding them lies through the medium of something they hold dear. Christians do no make governments evil. Muslims do not make governments evil. Atheists do not make governments evil. Greed and misinformation make governments evil.

    when did America allow women to vote ??

    • @tsunami770
      @tsunami770 5 років тому +4

      Really? Can they vote to choose to not wear a Hijab if they want to in Iran? Can they choose to walk unaccompanied by a male as well? Can they choose to leave Islam without any repercussions? You need not answer. We both know women are the property of their husbands and even if they are allowed to vote, it is a vote only as to who is the next oppressive theocrat to run their lives, never a vote for true emancipation or freedom and that's all there is to it. In fact, a woman in Islam does not even have the right to divorce her husband unless he approves it first (talaq). So what is this lie you are trying to pass on us here about America? America in 200 years has advanced more than Islam in 1200.

      Give a good reason why anyone should pour their efforts into religious books based on tripe, and you may start to have a point here.
      Is it not the case that the vast majority of the wrong done around the globe is in part due to religious enabling; that someone got it in their head that God was on their side, or told them to do something revolting?
      Islam, Judaism, Christian, Catholic, who gives a damn? They're all man made, and all equal glimpses of the same untruth.

      ***** The rape rate in India is 1.8 per 100,000 people. In the US, it is 27.3. The UK is at 24.1 and Pakistan at 28.8. I am not making these up. You may Google for official data any time.
      Yes, some people, anecdotally, cite under-reporting in India. Sorry, that does not explain the 1200% to 1500% difference between rape rate in India and the the countries above.
      Actually, India as a society is so sensitive when dealing with such incidents that it is the only major country that discusses rape as headline news on prime-time television. It makes those who don't look at data feel like India is some kind of haven for rapists. The truth is much the opposite.

    • @Little_Lizard
      @Little_Lizard 9 років тому +8

      Anand C Are you fucking kidding me?! The only reason the statistics are in your favour is because Indians do not report rape! This is because of the stigma surrounding it, as in India it is perfectly acceptable to blame the victim, if not kill them. If you honestly believe the U.S. has more crime than that third world shit hole than you're living in a fantasy world.

    • @anandc8999
      @anandc8999 9 років тому +14

      Jack Daniel Huh, I have heard the under-reporting argument before. Sorry, it does not explain the rape rate in the US being more than 1400% higher than that of India's.
      Do you have any cold hard numbers based on cold hard research that can explain the gargantuan difference between the rape rates? If not, you are just one of the countless people from the western world who have fallen prey to media frenzy and anecdotal hearsay about India. Next time, you could do well to check facts and numbers.
      I say again that India is the only major country which, as a society, is so outraged by rape incidents that they discuss these incidents as headline news on prime-time television. The western media picks it up and a narrative is built that India is a haven for rapists.
      This explains your grossly fallacious perception too even though the opposite is true i.e. India is the only major society that treats this issue so sensitively and that the rape rate itself is dramatically lower (about 1200% to 1400% and more) than that in major nations of the western world.

      whois wat By religion, Buddhist and Jain women reported the lowest prevalence of sexual violence in their lifetime (3 and 4 percent), while 5% of Sikh women, 6% of Christian women and 8% of Hindu women reported experiencing sexual violence. The highest prevalence rate (11%) of lifetime sexual violence was reported by Muslim women.
      A 2014 study in The Lancet states, "Whereas an 8·5% prevalence of sexual violence in the country [India] is among the lowest in the world, it is estimated to affect 27·5 million women in India [given India's large population]".

He consistently referred to it as appallingly evil that one person could atone for and take the punishment and guilt for another's wrong doing. But that isn't the case with Jesus' sacrifice. Let's say I sin against you, cause you harm or ill intent. You then go, "Hey you know what it's ok, I'll face the punishment in your place". That's not what Jesus did. That and his historical objections are not very good as well.

      Except Aceh, women elsewhere in Indonesia are allowed to drive, ride motorcycles, buy houses, work as CEOs, governmental ministers, public service officers and they can also wear whatever the hell they want. And our constitution is based on 6 government-sanctioned religion i.e Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Buddism and the law of the land (except Aceh) is secular and does not favor one religion over the other. Even though the LGBT communities are not celebrated, they are not banned either and there are even parks in central Jakarta where transgender communities freely mingle.

You think that is because Christianity is peaceful? Meanwhile if 1.5 muslims were violent you'd be dead already because they don't kid around as ISIS demonstrated quite well. But I admit, when you use the national flag as your icon I understand you lack a personal identity, adopted the national one, and so are afraid of its evolution. My advice? Get a hobby.

      ***** Well, I beg to differ. Numerous learned people who know the Quran say it definitely CAN be used in very negative ways.
      The problem is that too many muslims and muslim countries allow the fundamentalists to run the show.
      So called "moderates" have done little or nothing to stop this. They've allowed it to intermingle if not dominate their politics.
      As I've said to others, western nations took control of the Christian fundamentalists long ago. We've made their violent "by the book" religious laws socially unacceptable and illegal.
      They still have too much say in my opinion but at least we don't let them burn people for being witches and other nonsense.

There are Muslim women in India and they have no external force/ state enforcing laws that are almost medieval, like Saudi Arabia. The state of women in India these days is that they're a 100% equal to men. I can confirm this because I live in India and don't get my facts from CNN or Fox News.
      Rape on the other hand in India is exactly similar to how rape is a problem in the United States, South Africa or Sweden. (Look this up) So, you need to be equally surprised if I say that "the state of women is great in United States".

    Aslan makes a very good point, however I wouldn't be holding up either Bangladesh or Indonesia as 'best practice' on human rights. Then again, there's plenty of so-called 'Christian' countries who are just as bad. Basically humans beings can be good or bad, irrespective of their religion & religion does not seem to make people more or less moral. Put it this way, I wouldn't presume someone is a good and honest person because they're Christian, even though I know plenty of Christians who are very good & honest people.

      Gene Anthony I can't think of any examples of that specific crime off-hand, but I can think of a Christian country which murdered thousands because they weren't Christian in the last 25 years... I really don't think people's religion is a good way to judge whether they will do bad things to others.

    • @geneanthony3421
      @geneanthony3421 9 років тому +3

      Duncan Wallace what Christian country murdered thousands of people for religious reasons? As Christopher Hitchens used to say if left to their own accord good people will do good, bad people will do bad, for good people to do wicked things that requires religion.

    • @geneanthony3421
      @geneanthony3421 9 років тому +1

      Duncan Wallace not in love with Christians I just don't like how a lot of people are trying to make a 1 to 1 comparison between the groups. If you take Christianity's past into account than yes it's fair, don't know about today. It's not that Muslims are all violent it's that if you are going to saw someone's head off for religious beliefs people can pretty much guess you're Muslim. What annoys me about a lot of left leaning people is that they're quick to lump groups when it's convenient to their narrative but they then want to tell others not to judge groups by an individual when it's convenient.

    • @duncanwallace7760
      @duncanwallace7760 9 років тому +5

      Gene Anthony That's a great point. Everyone, left or right, should be careful about lumping groups together.
      Muslims are getting a very bad time of it at the moment, when in fact they're the ones who are suffering the most from the violence. I suspect people living in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan are thoroughly sick of people like ISIS or the Taliban using religion as an excuse to do terrible things.

      Americans travel all the time. Problem is most go to a resort somewhere, soak up the sun and get drunk. What a waste of money. If they leave their resort they go on guided tours, buy souvenirs, hit up a hotel recommended restaurant, have a few more drinks and go back to the hotel. We tend to be very tourist attraction oriented. You get no sense of culture that way, you just get lots of series for Facebook or Instagram.

      @MrQaswara 10 років тому +24

      Can I get a citation from the Quran or the authentic hadith that says women's "clits" must be cut? You are extremely ignorant on the matter because this practice predates Islam by a few thousand years.

    • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 10 років тому +1

      Qas Wara In the Muslim countries where it is practiced, FGM is often justified by a controversial saying attributed to Mohammed that seem to favor sunna circumcision involving "minor" cutting of the clitoris.
      The authenticity of these sayings are unconfirmed, and some scholars have refuted them. Even if true, they only permit the practice; they do not mandate it.
      Of course, I would consider the non-consensual removal of anything without absolute medical need from anyone "harmful."
      In July, 1997 the Egyptian government overturned a ban on the practice of FGM. This event was celebrated by some Muslim figures, particularly Sheikh Youssef al-Badri, an outspoken proponent of the circumcision of Muslim women. Later the ban was reinstated, an act celebrated now by feminists and under assault by a few Muslim activists, again, led by Sheikh al-Badri.

    • @MrQaswara
      @MrQaswara 10 років тому +1

      *****
      Of coarse it matters when it started. It simply is not part of Islam at all. You also failed to provide a citation. Oh and by your logic, we need to call it a christian practice because this practice is popular in central and south african countries where the majority are christians, while muslims are minorities in those nations. Also, Im sure there are some atheists who live in africa who also participate in this action, does this mean we should also call it an atheist practice?

    • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 10 років тому +3

      Qas Wara Shame on those atheists that possibly do.
      As most atheists, including myself, abhor MGM/FGM as being an absolutely unnecessary practice, outside absolute medical need, where all non-medical alternatives have been explored.
      Most cultures that still do circumcisions, do it due to one of two reasons: religion or obsolete medical education..
      An atheist supporting it would probably fall into the latter category.

      Aslan did not say that Indonesia has it 100% correct. He just made a point, that there are different situations in different so-called muslim countries. Compare Indonesia to Saudi Arabia. CHINA btw IS WAY WAY BELOW INDONESIA in human rights lists. These are facts. Aslan never denied that there are problems in these countries. Come on, in USA there were SLAVES and women could not vote even, the prejudices continued deeply well into 1970-s, although it is a Chirstian country. There people, who are head hunters and at the same time Christians, and for some reason, not too many people make generalizations about Christians in such a manner; but once the topic goes to Islam, then foam emerges.. What is with people. Why does it take so little to call someone a liar. Why deliberately lie if anyone could check it out by OBJECTIVE research?

    Maher's three main points, as I understood them, were:
    1) Liberals who advocate equal rights for women and LGBT people at home are often too reluctant to condemn cultures that oppress those groups.
    2) Criticism of Islam should be allowed, and should not be conflated with bigotry toward Muslims.
    3) “Extremist” views are not held by a small minority of Muslims, but rather by a plurality of citizens in many, if not most, Muslim countries.
    Tell me why this doesn't make sense?

Religious beliefs should be no more protected than any other beliefs. What if I told you I believe in unicorns? Or Santa Claus? You would laugh at me, criticise me, but those would be my beliefs. Don't you see? Criticism and judgement of beliefs through reason, logic and evidence is the way forward, not keeping our mouths shut and letting ignorance run rife. There are no "flaws" in any religion. There are only flaws in interpretation. There are flaws in how religion is followed. Any abstract concept of morality (objective or subjective) indirectly stems from some form of religious idea. In Islam, violence is shunned. But yes, defensive combat when it comes to protecting the Islamic institution exists. Islam teaches man to save human beings. Saving one human being is equivalent to saving all of humankind, in the Qur'an. Atheists and agnostics have their own interpretation of "non faith". Ironically, they don't have any "objective" baseline scripture or mandate or listed set of ideas that states exactly what their beliefs are. It's all in the air to be honest. Criticizing is easy when you have nothing to support and nothing to understand except for sensory dimensions of reality.

      octavius simplicitous Basically the entire second and third paragraph was about the dumbest fucking thing you can do to an argument. Combine ad hominem, red herring (irrelevant points to shift focus from the argument), and strawman (misconceive the argument and rebut incorrectly because in a way that's more convenient for you) all in one. Don't do that.
      All you've done is _kind of_ loosened up the argument for one country, Bangladesh, _maybe,_ although not so much for Turkey, considering almost all the contemporary politics there only adds to vestige against your side of the argument, and nothing about the second half of my comment, although you talk as if my objective rebuttal is still wrong.
      But what the hell was the rest for? You have no idea what you're talking about, you're just ranting at some made-up image in your head you've developed for anyone that says "There's evidence this stuff isn't really a good idea".
      It's very simple --Stop ignoring the evidence that the farther you are from the fundamentals of really any of the three main monotheistic religions, the more civilized society on average you have, and don't be hypocritical by having your own blanket statements in your head to preconceive people as "hateful bigots".

    This isn’t pwnage. The CNN crew is just very poor at catching his bullshit. First of all, yes, he’s right about some of this, especially the part about female genital mutilation. Maher is wrong. That’s good pwnage. However, he’s being rather sneaky about his claims of equal rights in Muslim countries, and trying to dodge the reality that it is, in fact, Islamic culture on a larger scale that is dangerously antiquated and presents the core problem.
    Here’s the thing… Yes, women technically have equal rights in those countries he mentions, as far as their laws are concerned. However, they're still under severe cultural pressures to adhere to anti-woman Muslim codes, like covering their heads and submitting to their husbands. In a lot of these countries, their governance is influenced by their former post-WWI colonizers (UK and France), but on a personal cultural level, Don Lemon is dead right: these majority-Muslim countries do not offer a "free and open society for women".
    I’ve been to Indonesia and have friends from there. Trust me, there’s no women equality there. Turkey, same thing. The rural regions of Turkey are nothing like Istanbul. And I’ve spent long summers on the Maghreb coast of Africa in supposedly secular places like Tunisia and Morocco. Same thing there: yes, their laws are modern, and they’re tourist-friendly. Western women can bathe topless on the beaches of Djerba and men can guzzle down all the red wine they want. But the locals know their place, and the women in these countries know they will be abused and ostracized if they even think of stepping out of line. Honor killings are not uncommon in any of the “equal rights” places Mr. Azlan mentions. They suffer from the same poisonous Islamic culture as Saudi Arabia, just on a different scale. On this point, Maher is correct. CNN just sucks at calling him out.

Remember he himself said "we're not having this conversation in any legitimate way." I'm sure he could have gotten to that but the hosts kept pressing the same issue incorrectly. I think that is a great question that the host never asked him. And why be frustrated with TYT? Another thing about Indonesia is that while it is the largest "muslim" government, it considers itself secular, not muslim, though of course islam does have its strong influence.
      But really, its called a muslim country because it has so many muslims in it, but if you are here, which I am, you will see that they are also one of the more liberal, and therefore hypocritical muslim countries around.
      But on another point, Indonesia has come out against extremism consistantly, which is to be expected from a secular liberal country.
      Islam here is becoming like christianity in europe and I suspect that in the next 10 years it will be a muslim country in inheritance only, not practice.

Of course you can practice science and also praise your god of choice, but it would be more consistent to apply the scientific method in all areas of life. The default position is to say "I don't know." Once you make that leap of faith and start believing in the supernatural, you lose your critical thinking credibility. It's no coincidence most people become part of the religion they were brought up in, and they can't all be right. That fact alone should be enough for people to realize how silly it is to divide ourselves by what god(s) we believe in or don't believe in, but culture is so intertwined in most religion that it complicates the enlightenment process.

    I used to have so much fun turning Islam inside out as an ''atheist,'' even though I don't even like that term since it acknowledges the idea of a non creator - therefore it's not even original it's just alternative to describe non religious. However, atheism is the closest thing to my preference for argument sake. Judaism and Christianity, or course precursors to Islam, inevitably shares the same geological influence with technically shared ''prophets.'' Acknowledging divine people within all these books and yet still at war only justifies traditional tribal tendencies to wage war against each other due to insecurities, not metaphysical harmony. I started reading and listening to much of Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein and as well as Israeli Pro American liberals for peace, that in all, as an intellectual viewer of much one sided media journalism, you can only conclude how most networks strategically make Islam look inferior. This video is an amazing objective example how to literally view the world of continued bigotry. Trust me. The problem with the late 21st Century is that humans can now exaggerate world occurrences with a direct parallel to literary comprehension, which is why people who don't really visualize the bigger picture just mention occurrences in the Koran that they only want to portray. The Quran has way more divine and innocent passages than the evil things the media wants to portray. The Jewish Talmud is just as disgusting if we all want to show contextual (or literal =P) writings of the middle east. We don't do that because you don't want to educate the people you already control.

    Im not saying its only a muslim problem but Reza acts like it has nothing to do with islam at all and i dont think thats right either.

      It has nothing to do with Islam because no where in the religious scriptures of mainstream Islam does it say that genital mutilation is lawful. It is agreed upon unanimously by accredited Muslim scholars that female genital mutilation is forbidden in Islam.

Here women and men are equal in politic, education, legal, etc. Women can have driving license. yes there is a lil issue about some radical people, but it's only a minor one.

      You're incorrect. Then their points would have been completely different, if you say "muslim countries" you're talking about islam, if you say "some muslim countries" then your're talking about specifics not the entire religion. I think it's pretty obvious that they wanted to talk about Islam, or else they would have just corrected themselves. Remeber the questions Don asked "Does Islam promote violence?" That was their whole story.

      You should speak out when that happens. It's wrong when and if it happens.
      Note that people make assumptions based on what they do and do not know about you. And that people prejudge, it will happen and there's nothing wrong with it.
      However, when someone would say something bad and you feel incorrectly included, speak out.

    I suppose you could say that Reza destroyed Maher, if it wasn't for the fact that Aslan is blatantly lying. Egypt has 90% Female genital mutilation (FGM) rates, Sudan is 88% neither are considered central African countries. Same for Mali 89% and Mauritania. Also, in the countries that he sites as Christian that have high rates of FGM, why do they do it? For RELIGIOUS reasons!
    Furthermore, the idea that in Indonesia that women are treated as equals is preposterous. In fact, Indonesia has a FGM rate of near 90%. Bangladesh, although improving is no bastion of female equality either. Lack of equal rights for women in Turkey is one of the main things keeping it out of the EU.
    I have traveled in many Muslim nations, and the majority of the people in the areas are generous and peace loving people, but to claim that Islam is not used to subjugate women or justify violence is pure codswallop.

    • @jnkggl
      @jnkggl 10 років тому +2

      kbmagnus12 He made it out to be a "Central African" problem, but Egypt and Sudan are in Saharan Africa. But fair enough, it is also a problem in the Middle east, including Kurdistan, in Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Yeman and other regions. It is also a problem in Asia (almost exclusivelin the Muslim regions of Aisia), including Tajikistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, as well as being widespread in parts of Pakistan and India. And to assert that it is a free and open society for women in Indonisia of Bangladesh is simply bald faced avarice.

    • @kbmagnus12
      @kbmagnus12 10 років тому

      jnkggl sure but still. to simply say its a "muslim country problem" is misleading. the reporters are clearly not listening to him. and they didnt do their homework since they never pointed out what you did.

    • @jnkggl
      @jnkggl 10 років тому

      kbmagnus12 True, I have less respect for the conduct of the reporters than I do for the debate that went played out on real time. While Ben Affleck, Michael Steele and Nicholas Kristof made some very good points about negative stereo typing and broad brushing, Bill Maher and Sam Harris were also making very defensible points. W/o any effective opposition Aslan ran roughshod over Maher & Harris, but used inflated and misleading rhetoric to do so. If Maher or especially Harris had been there to defend themselves Aslan would have had egg all over his face. If Hitchens, dog bless his history on earth, he would have wiped the floor with Aslan for speaking such tergiversating half truths.

      Basically he indirectly made it seem like the problems with oppressing lied in the Arab countries because the ones he named were non arab. The the Muslim religion originated in the Arab world and the are the original Muslims who have had the religion deeply entrenched in their culture. Turkey was a christian empire at a point in history. The Asian countries have there traditional cultural practices from before Islam .

Yes, there are moderates but that shouldn't blind us from the serious problems rooted in a religion like Islam.
