Bill Maher Destroyed Again And Again By Reza Aslan

- "Religious scholar Reza Aslan took some serious issue on CNN Monday night with Bill Maher‘s commentary about Islamic violence and oppression. Maher ended his show last Friday by going after liberals for being silent about the violence and oppression that goes on in Muslim nations. Aslan said on CNN that Maher’s arguments are just very unsophisticated.
He said these “facile arguments” might sound good, but not all Muslim nations are the same. Aslan explained that female mutilation is an African problem, not a Muslim one, and there are Muslim-majority nations where women are treated better and there are even female leaders."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Why are people hating on Aslan? Everything he said is true. I mean, he does have a PhD in religion.
+Ameen Younis lol, I get the joke.
+ViNcEnT RoSs lol, I'm actually serious.
Ameen Younis
Then you are a sadly misinformed little person. This man is a slanderous liar who makes frivolous arguments, muddies the water, and uses half-truths to mislead people about the real threat of Sunni Islamism.
+ViNcEnT RoSs Uhh, what did he say that was false? He brilliantly points out that certain Christian African countries practice FGM which proves his point that Islam is not linked directly with certain practices. He even concedes that some of the actions by Saudi Arabia are wrong.
+Ameen Younis I do agree with you :) Reza made some great points, but Islam haters refuse to believe what he says. They can't even provide facts that he is lying, which can prove to be difficult, mainly because Reza is telling the facts himself...
If Reza Aslan could sit down with someone like Bill O'Reilly and tear him to shreds (intellectually, mind you) for a couple of hours, he would sell out the biggest stadiums in the world. I really admire him for using all this knowledge he's acquired over the years to expose the prejudice of such high-profile people.
Gavan Cohen 1: The old Testament says almost word for word the same thing.
2: "Idoloters" was not meant to include Christians, Jews or Zoroastrrins.
3: There were rules of fair combat established, such as no killing of women, children or civilians.
None of which excuses the killing of people based on religion. Killing people just because of their religion is never justified.
But, a lot of things led up to Mohamed's war with the polytheists of Saudi Arabia. It should be read in context.
And, of course, Jews and Christian did the same thing.
Gavan Cohen Where are Christians and Jews told to fight people until they become Christian or Jew (or pay a special tax)?.....Q9:29, on the other hand (or any of surah 9, hell, any of quran).........Can't speak for you, but I'd rather live next to the person who prays I accept their faith, than the nutjob who is told to convert me, tax me, or kill me, if I reject theirs......Yeah those are equal faiths, pretty much identical, why all the fuss right?
Amar Sahbi Taxes to government (in a non-Islamic state) have nothing to do with religion....LOL all religious followers taxed by government equally (in some countries, religious institutions aren't taxed at all, including muslim)....taxing based on income/wealth --- terrible comparison friend
A good, pious, muslim government - they will tax you extra if you're not muslim, or throw you in jail if you refuse to pay jizya, or exile, or kill you....
I'll let you try again if you want
Amar Sahbi You're comparing apples to oranges to try and excuse the religiously sanctioned extortion of islam.
Your cowardly false equivalency to penalties EVERYBODY might have to pay (regardless of faith), only shows you can't defend islam...I thought islam better than the west in all ways? Yet you have no problem with muslim government taxing non-muslims extra for refusing to convert to islam, but wanting to stay ALIVE - comparing it to possible jail time?
And the Islamic penalties for refusing to pay jizya, are far more harsh than any secular governments would be....they'll seize your property, your wife, your kids....your life.......
Show me what tax code is as equally despicable as Q9:29?
Please answer
Amar Sahbi You're trying to equivocate, so let me help you:
Islamic Govt: Taxes all, plus it taxes non-muslims extra to remain alive and in the house of islam
Secular Govt: Taxes all - based on income/wealth, irrelevant of faith
Islamic penalty for refusal to pay jizya, or leave the land: death, enslavement, ...exile if you're lucky
Secular penalty for refusal to pay taxes or leave the land: possible jail time, fine, probation, maybe deportation
The question isn't why there is punishment for not paying taxes, quit trying to redefine it - The question is why islam singles out non-muslims to pay extra tax, simply for not being muslim, and wanting to stay alive?
Reza Aslan is not only intelligent but also highly rational. I wouldn't personally want to debate him on any topic.
Except for the fact he believes in a religion which is irrational in all context.
dstacey331 As an atheist who has made UA-cam videos about the mistaken thoughts of theists, I feel compelled to agree... but it's not entirely accurate. Belief in a god without evidence is certainly foolish if you value truth, but I imagine that theists like Reza value several things more than truth. He has publicly admitted that he doesn't agree with many of the thoughts and tenants of his fellow Muslims, but the errancy of his scripture still hasn't caused him to dismiss his faith because it's not all about whether his holy book is mistaken or even whether his god really exists.
Shouldn't truth be the most important value? To believe something contrary to facts or evidence is the very definition of irrational.
dstacey331
Yeah, _we_ believe that truth ought to be most valued, which is why we're atheists. But there's nothing objectively more valuable about truth than things that aid survival such as social reputation or advancing one's career.
Is John Green of the Vlogbrothers irrational? How about Francis Collins of the Human Genome project? It's true that irrationality and theism have a close relationship, but I don't believe that you have to be irrational to believe in a god.
Rational!?!?! All I hear is Muslims doing bad things and then comes his BUT blah blah blah
Pakistan was actually first muslim majority country to elect woman as head of state (Benazir Bhutto in 90s)
Thats because she was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, electing someone as the head of state doesn't automatically mean that women are equal. Even the Bangladesh pm's were the daughter and wife of previous elected men.
Sameer Chakraborthy same thing for Indira Gandhi
@Victor Gunn ..your brothers sikh and they paid price for it.
@Victor Gunn .are you dumb?I told you ,her bodyguard from sikh community killed her..sikh and Muslims both are same..just their prophets are different but teaching is same..jihadi.
And this is how war starts. Just reading these comments shows why people believe what they believe.
Why is Aslan getting so much hate? He's straight up correct. It's an Arab culture problem, not a Muslim religion problem. I'm neither Arab nor Muslim and I understand this. Blaming Islam for how horrible Iran et al are is like blaming Christianity for how horrible Nazi Germany was, or blaming atheist for how evil North Korea is. Religion doesn't make governments evil, it's simply a convenient way to sway people to your perspective by slowly feeding them lies through the medium of something they hold dear. Christians do no make governments evil. Muslims do not make governments evil. Atheists do not make governments evil. Greed and misinformation make governments evil.
+Level 58 Death Knight yup, agree with you. thinking skill 101, stereotyping is a bad practice.
Baby Jesus Islam is evil, period, everything about it is evil.
+Level 58 Death Knight To hell with their culture - Richard Dawkins
+Level 58 Death Knight The Nazi germany analogy does not hold. because the germans did not use christian ideology to motivate their crimes, they used racial ones. Whereas Iran and ISIS do use Islamist ideology wich has a basis in Islam. This matters. claiming 'a wash' disingenuous.
+Level 58 Death Knight Their religion is their culture.
Benazir Bhutto, Tansu Çiller, Megawati Sukarnoputri, Khaleda Zia, Sheikh Hasina... These muslim women were elected to prime minister or president LOOONG before a BLACK man became the president of USA.
dessertboy2006 They are all women born into powerful political families in countries where democracy is a farcical facade that disguises what's essentially a one part + military controlled state.
Those women came into power not because of islam's encouragement of women coming to power, but because of the circumstances of their privileged birth.
you should not generalize. These women are talented and were elected because of that. They also have leadership qualities and visions for their country.
FYI, the role of women in monotheistic religions are the same. All major religions are male dominated. Even Hinduism and Buddhism.
dessertboy2006 And what happened to them?
Loooool
dessertboy2006 also, i'd like to point out he's half black. The term "first black president" is inherently prejudiced and is related to cultural barriers against minorities in the USA. Obama is as much white as he is black.
I must have missed the part where Bill got destroyed. Anyone?
Yep. Reza Aslan is a complete fraud.
***** As well as being intellectually dishonest to the core.
Total BS, they only had data on this in african countries, so he pretends it doesnt exist in muslim countries
GamingByteTv you just jealous 😂
MrLiberali Of what? Was that supposed to be a statement?
Muslim women had the right to vote since prophet Mohamed
when did America allow women to vote ??
Really? Can they vote to choose to not wear a Hijab if they want to in Iran? Can they choose to walk unaccompanied by a male as well? Can they choose to leave Islam without any repercussions? You need not answer. We both know women are the property of their husbands and even if they are allowed to vote, it is a vote only as to who is the next oppressive theocrat to run their lives, never a vote for true emancipation or freedom and that's all there is to it. In fact, a woman in Islam does not even have the right to divorce her husband unless he approves it first (talaq). So what is this lie you are trying to pass on us here about America? America in 200 years has advanced more than Islam in 1200.
Tbh. By commenting this, it's obvious that you don't want to learn about women's roles in Islam, but through your own ignorance
It seems to me you know nothing of islam and don't bring this garbage because everytime that someone hates islam they just bring this topic up, let me tell you something do proper and reliable research and stop being illogical. This comment is pathetic and you are just embarrassing yourself plus this topic has been explained over and over again and some how the haters just always bring it up to prove there point. Look if you continue to say dumb, false, and disgusting things about islam I have two words for you to learn, shut up. Plus don't reply pathetic things because they are nothing new and a waste of everyones time

When it comes to Bill Marr, or most atheists in general, no one should take their views on religious-political issues seriously. It's deeply influenced by their atheist beliefs.
Give a good reason why anyone should pour their efforts into religious books based on tripe, and you may start to have a point here.
Is it not the case that the vast majority of the wrong done around the globe is in part due to religious enabling; that someone got it in their head that God was on their side, or told them to do something revolting?
Islam, Judaism, Christian, Catholic, who gives a damn? They're all man made, and all equal glimpses of the same untruth.
alvaro montoya No Atheism is a BELIEF defined by the lack of belief in God. It's has nothing to do with knowledge. It simply means someone who BELIEVES God doesn't exist.
Pro Jektor For one knowledge, is there a disadvantage in acquiring knowledge on a particular relevant subject?
And two because religion/Islam has an important role to play when talking about Middle Eastern politics. Therefore a more civilised, nuanced understanding of Islam gives you a better understanding of the region.
I get it. It's all a load of rubbish so why bother study a bunch of fairy tales? Well just don't expect me to take your views seriously when you talk on this matter.
'When it comes to (insert name of religious person here), or most religious people in general, no one should take their views on religious-political issues seriously. It's deeply influenced by their religious beliefs.'
Fixed that for ya.
simoneleone Religious people know their texts, atheists don't and make no serious attempt to like Pro Jektor proved.
The Atheist understanding of religion is superficial, ignorant, unsophisticated, and largely based on conjecture. This is because the atheist deliberately takes the most cynical perspective on religion to justify their disbelief in God.
So I can't take their views seriously when religion and politics are intertwined to come pursue any kind of objective truth.
İt's funny how some american people here judge Turkish people for choosing Erdoğan, while they chose someone like Trump as their president 😂😂😂
ariean rachmat And I'm not talking about him losing popular vote. I'm pretty sure that people here who judges Turkish for Erdoğan are maybe ones who were happy for Trump for becoming a president.
Bahar Zeynalova
Do you seriously compare trump with erdogan? And the americsn with the turkish political system? Seriously?
Charlie Spider I just compare people with people, they are the same everywhere :)
Bahar Zeynalova
I could say people are different everywhere you look and that would be also true. I believe it is _cultures_ you are comparing if you think about it not people. And these differ big time
Charlie Spider Look, I just wanted to say that people here brought the Islam conversation to Erdoğan, yeah? I see no point, even though he supports Islam. When dumbasses here discuss Islam without reading a single page of Quran I understand that they really can't distinguish culture from religion. As Trump is one of the kinda important part of this game, (Muslim ban) I just wanted to mention him, cause when this people literally shout here that "Islam" is an evil because of terrorists, they don't even know that their lovely America and GB stands behind this shit.
Da fuck did Cenk say about India not having any issue with muslims and women ?
It's not about the laws. And rape doesn't happen every two minutes a in the US. Please get your facts straight.
***** Bullshit, especially the part where you said that "The US has a much higher incidence of rape than India."...
***** The rape rate in India is 1.8 per 100,000 people. In the US, it is 27.3. The UK is at 24.1 and Pakistan at 28.8. I am not making these up. You may Google for official data any time.
Yes, some people, anecdotally, cite under-reporting in India. Sorry, that does not explain the 1200% to 1500% difference between rape rate in India and the the countries above.
Actually, India as a society is so sensitive when dealing with such incidents that it is the only major country that discusses rape as headline news on prime-time television. It makes those who don't look at data feel like India is some kind of haven for rapists. The truth is much the opposite.
Anand C Are you fucking kidding me?! The only reason the statistics are in your favour is because Indians do not report rape! This is because of the stigma surrounding it, as in India it is perfectly acceptable to blame the victim, if not kill them. If you honestly believe the U.S. has more crime than that third world shit hole than you're living in a fantasy world.
Jack Daniel Huh, I have heard the under-reporting argument before. Sorry, it does not explain the rape rate in the US being more than 1400% higher than that of India's.
Do you have any cold hard numbers based on cold hard research that can explain the gargantuan difference between the rape rates? If not, you are just one of the countless people from the western world who have fallen prey to media frenzy and anecdotal hearsay about India. Next time, you could do well to check facts and numbers.
I say again that India is the only major country which, as a society, is so outraged by rape incidents that they discuss these incidents as headline news on prime-time television. The western media picks it up and a narrative is built that India is a haven for rapists.
This explains your grossly fallacious perception too even though the opposite is true i.e. India is the only major society that treats this issue so sensitively and that the rape rate itself is dramatically lower (about 1200% to 1400% and more) than that in major nations of the western world.

Logan Martinez Bite me.
whois wat more muslim women in india are raped in india more than anywhere else in the world. Its the indian mecia Who hides it all under the carpet
whois wat By religion, Buddhist and Jain women reported the lowest prevalence of sexual violence in their lifetime (3 and 4 percent), while 5% of Sikh women, 6% of Christian women and 8% of Hindu women reported experiencing sexual violence. The highest prevalence rate (11%) of lifetime sexual violence was reported by Muslim women.
A 2014 study in The Lancet states, "Whereas an 8·5% prevalence of sexual violence in the country [India] is among the lowest in the world, it is estimated to affect 27·5 million women in India [given India's large population]".
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_in_India
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_in_India#cite_note-nfhs2-72
Citation number 72 has the PDF source for that 11% statistic.
I'm not comparing this to other countries but it would seem that rape is a huge problem in India, particularly for Muslim women.
Indonesia more than 90% Islam but million of womans heres drives their own car
+Ancha Batubara -- How progressive of an Islamic country! Indonesia may have been a "moderate" Islamic country - yet modern civilization is not compatible with Sharia law ... and: www.gatestoneinstitute.org/3579/indonesia-sharia

Oh, dont mind, its these imperialist western organizations like WHO and UNICEF.

Not matter what cenk claims about himself, he is a muslim for sure!!!
it is not the religion it is where the people who practice it come from, and how they are taught to apply it. The current American president is Muslim, if you don't believe me wait a few years, or read his speech in Baltimore.

Interesting. Usually when there's a debate between two people, both parties are present.
We need Christopher Hitchens...
I totally agree!
I was not a big fan of Hitchens, largely because he didn't have valid objections concerning God, he simply had complaints. And trivial infantile complaints at that, but I admit he was spot on when it came to this topic.
*****
What objections, did you not find valid?
TheSleepingLionRoars Just as an example, he failed to comprehend what the atoning sacrifice of Jesus meant. He consistently referred to it as appallingly evil that one person could atone for and take the punishment and guilt for another's wrong doing. But that isn't the case with Jesus' sacrifice. Let's say I sin against you, cause you harm or ill intent. You then go, "Hey you know what it's ok, I'll face the punishment in your place". That's not what Jesus did. That and his historical objections are not very good as well.
***** So, Jesus didn't atone for other's wrong doing?

He's bullshitting so much. Indonesia was just in the news for stoning a 13 year old girl who was raped.
John Waas Mate. That was Aceh. All of us Indonesians hate Aceh and their Sharia Law. Just ask any Indonesia who is not an Acehnese.
ngkos So it's still indonesia. She was still raped. There is still sharia law. And (to my comment's point) HE STILL LIED!
John Waas Your understanding of Indonesian politics seems to be zero on why Aceh is the way they are. It's like the US is judged entirely by its worst state.
Except Aceh, women elsewhere in Indonesia are allowed to drive, ride motorcycles, buy houses, work as CEOs, governmental ministers, public service officers and they can also wear whatever the hell they want. And our constitution is based on 6 government-sanctioned religion i.e Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Buddism and the law of the land (except Aceh) is secular and does not favor one religion over the other. Even though the LGBT communities are not celebrated, they are not banned either and there are even parks in central Jakarta where transgender communities freely mingle.
Lastly, we have had a female president. Can't say the same for the US.
ngkos Being president of Indonesia is like being king of a box castle. It has no merit. Can we also have her help run Somalia?
John Waas Ahh but she got better.
Aslan is a master at sidestepping the issue. Brilliant in fact. Especially in these one-sided conversations. These "journalists" don't have the knowledge to pry the bullshit out of his rants.
He dodges around the fact that Islam can so easily be used for negative actions.
Sure some muslim countries aren't as bad as others but why are so many muslims in so many countries capable of such bad things? BECAUSE THE RELIGION GIVES THEM THE JUSTIFICATION.
As far as a cat fight is concerned, doesn't the other "cat" have to be there for it to be a fight?
hebber1961 yeah, you are exactly right. It seems that ever since Cenk had a face to face interview with Reza, he was unable to see through his bullshit, and he has been kissing his ass ever since.
don't you think this would be a much better world where NOBODY on earth had an invisible sky daddy? We wouldn't have to worry about disagreeing over religion, and we would be able to make rational decisions based on the real world, and the only life we know for sure we have.
hebber1961 Who cares what the religion says, Christianity says a lot of shit too and that religion is already running Canada and the USA. Christians have waged war a hundred times over... and you've paid the price enormously as a result. Do you not see all the injured vets in your country? I do when I visit. You think that is because Christianity is peaceful? Meanwhile if 1.5 muslims were violent you'd be dead already because they don't kid around as ISIS demonstrated quite well. But I admit, when you use the national flag as your icon I understand you lack a personal identity, adopted the national one, and so are afraid of its evolution. My advice? Get a hobby.
***** Well, I beg to differ. Numerous learned people who know the Quran say it definitely CAN be used in very negative ways.
The problem is that too many muslims and muslim countries allow the fundamentalists to run the show.
So called "moderates" have done little or nothing to stop this. They've allowed it to intermingle if not dominate their politics.
As I've said to others, western nations took control of the Christian fundamentalists long ago. We've made their violent "by the book" religious laws socially unacceptable and illegal.
They still have too much say in my opinion but at least we don't let them burn people for being witches and other nonsense.
hebber1961 Christianity can also be used for negative actions. I think you don't know which one is bullshit. People stereotype all Islamic nations and the religion itself for being violent. Well so is christianity.
Now I will correct you as well regarding Pakistan, the 1st Muslim woman prime minister was from Pakistan. So correct your books, also the extremest narratives came from the political war on terror planned by Israel.

Cenk: "Women don't have any issues in India". Um, right Cenk, seems like you're guilty of silly generalizations just like Maher.
Rape in India is clearly an Islamic issue......(sarcasm)
Najim Shakeeb I'm not ascribing it to any group in particular, I just find the comment to be a silly generalization knowing the type of issues faced in India today.
And you also know, being an intelligent person, that there was context around his statement. It wasn't a blanket statement that women don't have an issues, it was within the context of Muslims oppressing women (which they do not in India).
Just like when he used Turkey as an example, he was clearly not saying Turkey is the perfect country -- just that they also do not oppress women.
Kimberley Ford Exactly. TY.
+Kimberley Ford You're totally off topic. Rape in India is in no way an Islamic issue. That's the point he was trying to make. There are Muslim women in India and they have no external force/ state enforcing laws that are almost medieval, like Saudi Arabia. The state of women in India these days is that they're a 100% equal to men. I can confirm this because I live in India and don't get my facts from CNN or Fox News.
Rape on the other hand in India is exactly similar to how rape is a problem in the United States, South Africa or Sweden. (Look this up) So, you need to be equally surprised if I say that "the state of women is great in United States".
bill maher is scary, but hes correct nevertheless, fancy rhetoric doesnt change facts. i live in india, the guy said indian muslims are fine, have you ever been here, lived life everyday and seen it through the eye of one? bill maher will make you uncomfortable , but stuff he says, THATS slam dunk, not your lop sided version of a multi-dimensional islam. islam isnt multi dimensional my friend, and all muslim countries, indonesia or saudi arabia have similar problems, only differentiated by the intensity of fanaticism.

Aslan makes a very good point, however I wouldn't be holding up either Bangladesh or Indonesia as 'best practice' on human rights. Then again, there's plenty of so-called 'Christian' countries who are just as bad. Basically humans beings can be good or bad, irrespective of their religion & religion does not seem to make people more or less moral. Put it this way, I wouldn't presume someone is a good and honest person because they're Christian, even though I know plenty of Christians who are very good & honest people.
Duncan Wallace tell me what Christian countries stone rape victims?
Gene Anthony I can't think of any examples of that specific crime off-hand, but I can think of a Christian country which murdered thousands because they weren't Christian in the last 25 years... I really don't think people's religion is a good way to judge whether they will do bad things to others.
Duncan Wallace what Christian country murdered thousands of people for religious reasons? As Christopher Hitchens used to say if left to their own accord good people will do good, bad people will do bad, for good people to do wicked things that requires religion.
Duncan Wallace not in love with Christians I just don't like how a lot of people are trying to make a 1 to 1 comparison between the groups. If you take Christianity's past into account than yes it's fair, don't know about today. It's not that Muslims are all violent it's that if you are going to saw someone's head off for religious beliefs people can pretty much guess you're Muslim. What annoys me about a lot of left leaning people is that they're quick to lump groups when it's convenient to their narrative but they then want to tell others not to judge groups by an individual when it's convenient.
Gene Anthony That's a great point. Everyone, left or right, should be careful about lumping groups together.
Muslims are getting a very bad time of it at the moment, when in fact they're the ones who are suffering the most from the violence. I suspect people living in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan are thoroughly sick of people like ISIS or the Taliban using religion as an excuse to do terrible things.
He called them stupid to their face in the most brilliant and smart way and I bet they said thank you
Ummm...Where the fuck was Bill Maher destroyed in this vid?
***** Seriously!
***** In Cenk's very vivid imagination, apparently.
***** I know I'm late to this party, but the anchors were speaking with Aslan about statements made by Bill Maher. They mention him a few times in their conversation.
Bottom line: Bill Maher is one of the only current liberal/progressive voices willing to ask the question: WHY do "liberals" ignore the utter and deeply held intolerance of Islam?
Yes, the "liberal loathing" Fox News excoriates Islam as well....but does that mean progressives should ignore the current and future ravages of Islam as a political threat in the future?
DO NOT LET LOATHING OF FOX BLIND US TO THE REALITY OF........
*****
Well, there ya go! I FORGOT Maher was a gosh-darned Jew! It just pisses me the hell off that Jews KNOW their place yet! Don't they realize that their Jew-y-ness renders them undeserving of valid opinion? I'm SOOO sorry. 19Angels.. Because we KNOW all Jews think alike!
THANK YOU so very much for proving that Islam, and Islam's apologists, thrive ONLY by way of an ugly and intolerant mindset.
Take your alleged Angels and....(think of something absolutely disgusting....)
Reza keeps body bags in his closet in case he needs to bury someone real quick.

I don't think reza was correct. Bill mahers point was more nuanced than he made it out to be. It just seemed dishonest
Indonesia had woman as it's president.. so.. yeah.
They mandate that female soldiers be virgins....
You sure that's the country you want to illuminate as some Liberal bastion in the Islamic world?
Pakistan had a woman as president.. so yeah lol
+Glenn Sager They do the two- finger test to see if they are virgins. They are really nice to females. Hurray!
+Lutherus P-XCs Yes, and Pakistan is just paradise for females, gays and other minorities. Don't be an idiot!
And it has awful abortion laws and homosexuals, atheists, and Christians are harassed a lot so yeah.
U people know less about Pakistan
@MIRCH MASALA ENTERTAINMENT your even more stupid
@MIRCH MASALA ENTERTAINMENT you guys should do some travel you have no idea about Pakistan
@MIRCH MASALA ENTERTAINMENT id say hindus in india are more extreme than muslims in pakistan
@MIRCH MASALA ENTERTAINMENT you know nothing seriously!
I have followed Prof. Reza Aslan for years now and his such an inspiration even in the face of such vacuous absent-minded American Media and Politics. Aslan is articulate, intelligent, knowledgeable and factually correct with every statement he makes, the antithesis of every American News and Political pundit out there. His literally made Fox shit themselves, and now his just destroyed CNN! Lol! This guy is amazing.. Keep educating America 👍👍🙌
i just hope you realize tyt falls under the same umbrella you just generalized the rest of the american media with
HandUpManUp TYT is online opinion news, theres a difference. They're hardly as influential as say, Fox or CNN.. (unfortunately) We all know most media outlets can be biased in favour of the companies political view.. Fox is glaringly right-wing for example, so they represent corporate America.
They're the largest online news publication as they say themselves. So i suggest you start holding them to the same standards as they have a massive following.
Transcended Cosmos Yep. TYT doesn't try to pretend to be 'news.' They're an editorial show. You are free to dispute and disagree with them - though some cranks do so in a mean-spirited bad-faith way, sadly.
HandUpManUp Lol.
Most Americans are too naive, need to think outside the box. Maybe try traveling a bit more outside your own country.
Bruh they would just bomb the box 😂 lol
Ali Rofe that’s 100% right bro
Americans travel all the time. Problem is most go to a resort somewhere, soak up the sun and get drunk. What a waste of money. If they leave their resort they go on guided tours, buy souvenirs, hit up a hotel recommended restaurant, have a few more drinks and go back to the hotel. We tend to be very tourist attraction oriented. You get no sense of culture that way, you just get lots of series for Facebook or Instagram.
I have. I still don't like Islam or Christianity. After all the research and debates I've seen, they are still little more than cults to me. And cults like controlling people. Screw that. I love freedom. Prove to me either is true and I'll change my opinion. But believe whatever you want. I'd rather live my life in reality
thejubieexperience Christians won’t kill you simply for not being Christian though, unlike Islam.
Excuse me, but where exactly was bill maher destroyed? I'm not exactly a bill maher fan, or a liberal but I don't think we watched the same video.
+tmc01 Clickbait title.
+tamsinthai I used to like TYT, but I don't think I can continue to support these blatant apologists
tmc01 I never liked them, it wasn't anything to do with Islam, I just found the guy a tad arrogant. And misguided.
+tmc01 Because Bill Maher is painting 'Muslim Countries' with certain problems and Reza refutes that statement by saying it's an African problem and not a 'Muslim Country' problem.
+tamsinthai awwww. you boys got your feeling hurtsies? 😭
Shiiiiiiit did you smelled that , Reza is cooking some CNN beef.
love it man
Reza Aslan is lying at the beginning. Female genital mutilation is very prevalent in Egypt for example.
egypt is an african country
Egypt is an african country..
Which has been condemned by their scholars and even been made illegal!
Faiza Busera Egypt is part of the Arab league they are arabic and speak arabic language, so are the rest of north african states (maghreb countries) if its African why are they not part of the African union?
Faiza Busera
When Reza says "it's an African problem", you know very well what he means. Egypt is only geographically African.
So he destroyed him by essentially saying "not all muslim nations are like that". Wow, a devastating argument.
You forgot he didn't use blanket statement and actually use FACT thus without a doubt disproving Bill Maher and CNN. You right though, that was a devastatating argument. I have to watch it again to see the epic Pwnge he deliver at CNN and Fox news
No True Scotsman would oppress women!
straw man argument much? all you did is undermining his argument (that is if you wrote that comment sarasticly)
For the media, sure.
You're so right Botzu. All I heard was Muslims behaving badly BUT blah blah blah
Ethiopia over 32 million people or 43.5% were reported to be Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, over 25 million or 33.9% were reported to be Muslim, yes that's all true, BUT cutting of a CLIT is a MUSLIM PRACTICE...
Can I get a citation from the Quran or the authentic hadith that says women's "clits" must be cut? You are extremely ignorant on the matter because this practice predates Islam by a few thousand years.
Qas Wara In the Muslim countries where it is practiced, FGM is often justified by a controversial saying attributed to Mohammed that seem to favor sunna circumcision involving "minor" cutting of the clitoris.
The authenticity of these sayings are unconfirmed, and some scholars have refuted them. Even if true, they only permit the practice; they do not mandate it.
Of course, I would consider the non-consensual removal of anything without absolute medical need from anyone "harmful."
In July, 1997 the Egyptian government overturned a ban on the practice of FGM. This event was celebrated by some Muslim figures, particularly Sheikh Youssef al-Badri, an outspoken proponent of the circumcision of Muslim women. Later the ban was reinstated, an act celebrated now by feminists and under assault by a few Muslim activists, again, led by Sheikh al-Badri.
*****
Of coarse it matters when it started. It simply is not part of Islam at all. You also failed to provide a citation. Oh and by your logic, we need to call it a christian practice because this practice is popular in central and south african countries where the majority are christians, while muslims are minorities in those nations. Also, Im sure there are some atheists who live in africa who also participate in this action, does this mean we should also call it an atheist practice?
Qas Wara Shame on those atheists that possibly do.
As most atheists, including myself, abhor MGM/FGM as being an absolutely unnecessary practice, outside absolute medical need, where all non-medical alternatives have been explored.
Most cultures that still do circumcisions, do it due to one of two reasons: religion or obsolete medical education..
An atheist supporting it would probably fall into the latter category.
Lose your fedora and your disgusting facial hair please.
So, this Reza guy finds it an issue when muslim countries are grouped together but finds no difficulty in citing genital mutilation as an africa problem, hmmmmmmm, i see
He said Central Africa. He was specific, you were not.
How come Reza Aslan isn't shown as one of the shrieking cats at the beginning of the video?
Yes, or Cenk Uygur for that matter.
MJmcnult oh that's funny!
He is...he's a lion
Aslan should be the one dog.
I wish Cenk was smarter! He has heart in right place, but often doesnt think things through. Theres also the fact that Maher has never invited Cenk to Real Time, and Cenk is a being a baby about it
ttfac.ToString();
*sigh* that's a fair criticism... but the premise I don't agree with. I think Cenk has a concern for truth above the average reporter. Whether his own research is sufficient is arguable.
You may not be convinced, but I do think it has much more explanatory power to simply say he is a slightly incompetent yet caring reporter rather than slander that he is openly lying.
ttfac.ToString();
100% agreed...
ttfac.ToString(); Cenk and Maher/Sam Harris is now on 3rd day, and Cenk is showing that he either has no grasp AT ALL of the topic, or he is unable to admit that he was wrong, and keeps piling on. Either way, I can not really watch tyt any more for a some time. When host is dumber, or just ignorant than most commentators and viewers (as comments clearly demonstrate) , its time to walk
He got Aslan's reference to Pakistan backwards in this video too, poor guy.
This is a perfect example of biased media. Every one of Reza Aslan's comments gets a time out and cheerleading commentary from Cenk Uygur against an absent opponent who cannot defend himself. Bill Maher could easily respond to every criticism raised in this one-sided, strawman report were he given the chance.
No, he wouldn't. He would get decimated and destroyed as previously seen.
*cough* FOX *cough*
***** None of his claims are false
What is the "strawman" you are referring to? I didn't see Aslan construct any strawmen. But I must have missed something.
***** So it seems. Thanks for pointing that out.
In Bangladesh prime minister and main opposition leader is lady.
Reza: "in Indonesia women are absolutely 100% equal to men" what a liar, Indonesia is still struggling with equality , there is public tolerance to polygamy sharia courts, and there is strong opposition to women becoming equal.
And how do you know that?
Anonymous
just search it, there are many sources, here is one:
www.hrw.org/world-report/2015/country-chapters/indonesia
Aslan did not say that Indonesia has it 100% correct. He just made a point, that there are different situations in different so-called muslim countries. Compare Indonesia to Saudi Arabia. CHINA btw IS WAY WAY BELOW INDONESIA in human rights lists. These are facts. Aslan never denied that there are problems in these countries. Come on, in USA there were SLAVES and women could not vote even, the prejudices continued deeply well into 1970-s, although it is a Chirstian country. There people, who are head hunters and at the same time Christians, and for some reason, not too many people make generalizations about Christians in such a manner; but once the topic goes to Islam, then foam emerges.. What is with people. Why does it take so little to call someone a liar. Why deliberately lie if anyone could check it out by OBJECTIVE research?
Ott Rovgeisha
watch the vid again, he said exactly what I quoted, he denied the problems in Indonesia, thus he is a liar.
Ott Rovgeisha
i dont need to email him, he has proved himself a liar. why would he lie about indonesia? he tried to desperately find a muslim country that is strong with human rights, so he picked Indonesia as it is closer to that than other muslim countries, and after that he tried to convince the unaware audience that that country is super 100% absolutely strong on human rights, so muslim countries doesnt seem so bad, but unfortunately it was a lie.
Maher's three main points, as I understood them, were:
1) Liberals who advocate equal rights for women and LGBT people at home are often too reluctant to condemn cultures that oppress those groups.
2) Criticism of Islam should be allowed, and should not be conflated with bigotry toward Muslims.
3) “Extremist” views are not held by a small minority of Muslims, but rather by a plurality of citizens in many, if not most, Muslim countries.
Tell me why this doesn't make sense?
***** Everyone should have the ability to criticise any religious beliefs, just like anyone has the right to criticise political beliefs; it's no different.
***** What?! Are you proposing some kind of fascistic authoritarian regime where nobody is allowed to criticise anybody? It's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH. It is my RIGHT to criticise whoever i goddamn well like. If a religious nutjob believes the Earth was made in seven days by a magical fairy in the sky then I am going to goddamn well criticise that! Religious beliefs should be no more protected than any other beliefs. What if I told you I believe in unicorns? Or Santa Claus? You would laugh at me, criticise me, but those would be my beliefs. Don't you see? Criticism and judgement of beliefs through reason, logic and evidence is the way forward, not keeping our mouths shut and letting ignorance run rife. Oh and by the way, religions criticise gay people for being gay all the time, so yes, I will criticise religion.
***** Guess what, countries with freedom of speech are not shitholes, while those without freedom of speech ARE shitholes. You DO NOT have the right to NOT BE offended. I am allowed to offend you as much as I want, as long as it is not harrassment, hate speech or threatening. So I will insult your, or any other religion as much as I so well please.
***** I'm not from the US but I can assure you it's better than any Islamic shithole you may describe to me.
***** Only to a certain extent: If in the UK we allow Islamic preachers to speak hatred, why can one not insult those religions freely? Most of the time we do, and it's a darn sight better than a country with no free speech whatsoever.
Wow great job reza! Very Good points.
well aint you just a sweet wee piece of eye candy x
You know I've made the exact points about Christianity and you always make bigoted comments about Christians but you applaud Reza Aslan. Umm??????????
Let see turkey. Gays and lesbians not conscripted
Can't serve openly in military
No same sex marriage
Gays can't adopt
Turkey socially conservative when it comes to homosexuality..
And in Indonesia a 2012 poll showed 80.6% of the population objected to having homosexual neighbors
Hmmm????
Gordy Bhoy dont get too giddy this is the first intelligent post i seen the chick make lol
My my my...aren't we looking good today!! Looks like you have a couple of good points there...but if you keep your top on I don't think anyone will notice! Ahhahaha! I made a funny! ;-]} silently snicker
Danny Hurren who somebody sleeps with should ONLY be a private matter-
except if who one sleeps with is a pre-pubescent child or ANYBODY via rape- then the offender should die...
“Reza is here to keep on regulating, lets here him go...” Verizon commercial begins to play
this anchor is so annoying
I'm sorry. He won this debate because he was more informed, but he lied. A lot. Indonesia is NOT equal by any means. Just ask any Indonesian woman. They laugh. Turkey had a largely secular government that is not connected to Islam. Many of the women heads of state he refers to? Daughters of former leaders. This was not an ass kicking for the informed.
Can you give some sources?
Yes. www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2014/10/05/reza-aslan-is-wrong-about-islam-and-this-is-why/
ELF Kids Videos Damn good source
do u think saudi arabia is connected to islam ? i can give you stories and verses with proof of how the women used to drive horses and go to the battles side by side of the men in 1400 years ago . and mohammad was elected by the men and women in medina . mohammad himself was employed by his wife khadijah and he was working for her and getting his salary from her . but you still can blaim the islam for what you are dectating your dear poppet in saudi arabia to do in the name of islam . he is selling his oil much more cheaper just becouse you have dectated him sooooooooo ..... .
Horse shit
The amount of Liberal TYT has become is becoming to much.
Yes, liberals are like children; retarded children.
Insightful commentary on the content of the video.
Good, that means you won't be watching and posting your stupid comments anymore, right?
Too*
FLUFFER FACE
Wow! Clever. That conservative ingenuity at work.
'You got to be accurate in your criticism'
You nailed it cink, this was the whole point,
How can you destroy somebody if they're not there to defend their self that's one sided
+charlesvan13 if Bill Maher was there he would have destroyed both of them
Calling Reza Aslan an religious scholar is like calling a Jeffry Dahmer a gourmet cook.
And you think this...why? Because you are a scholar? You are up on your comparative religion scholarship? You hold degrees in religious studies? Because you have a masters from the Harvard Divinity School? (Aslan does).
Or is your casual dismissal of Aslan's credentials informed solely by Fox News?
The point is, Aslan has stated he has degrees that he doesn't actually have *several* times. He just brings up degrees and schools he never went to. Look it up. There's plenty of video of him doing this.
Oh, yeah, that's right, because you're an expert and he's not. Dude...I might even bother to investigate it if your FB page wasn't littered with anti-Muslim sentiment. You're just one of those guys. Believe me, you're no expert. You're just a guy with a Big Idea who needs someone or some group to be your big focus of your disaffection.
Reza Aslan can think circles around you. Learn to think critically, not just swallow whatever your hate-sources feed you.
So you deny the facts he brought out?
the facts though. you cannot deny.
Perhaps Bill Maher is inaccurate on his criticism of Islam but Azlan cherry picks Countries with different policies to defend Islam and prevent the generalization of the many flaws of this religion......This kind of defense always prevents the conversation to be constructive.
There are no "flaws" in any religion. There are only flaws in interpretation. There are flaws in how religion is followed. Any abstract concept of morality (objective or subjective) indirectly stems from some form of religious idea. In Islam, violence is shunned. But yes, defensive combat when it comes to protecting the Islamic institution exists. Islam teaches man to save human beings. Saving one human being is equivalent to saving all of humankind, in the Qur'an. Atheists and agnostics have their own interpretation of "non faith". Ironically, they don't have any "objective" baseline scripture or mandate or listed set of ideas that states exactly what their beliefs are. It's all in the air to be honest. Criticizing is easy when you have nothing to support and nothing to understand except for sensory dimensions of reality.
Saudi Arabians women live like princes with servent chef drivers come on .we a American women has to pay and work for everything
كفووو
Love how you think that no saudi women live in poverty
Get educated
When someone TELLS US their actions are faith-inspired, I take them at their word
I guess he'll just ignore the fact that Indonesia and Turkey, his only two real counterexamples, are much more secular than his examples, and that Bangladesh and Malaysia were semi-alright, but still are a nice bit more secular don't make up for Islam in Africa and the majority of the Middle East.
On Female Genital Mutilation, Aslan is "Empirically, factually incorrect" and I have actual statistics here, it is NOT just Africa.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence_of_female_genital_mutilation_by_country#Middle_East
Since your not getting what Reza said and your doing the same mistake Bill Maher did, He was Point was this.
If your going to use a specific for a generalization then it must be UNANIMOUS that all "MUSLIM MAJORITY COUNTRIES" do that same practice. At the end of the day using generalizations like that is objectively incorrect
Are you seriously using Wikipedia as your 'reliable source' with 'actual statistics'?!
Aftab Ahmed how many of whom being circumcised in the UK are muslims?
Rita Abraham Wikipedia is most the time as reliable as most encyclopedias.
Are you seriously going to make a genetic fallacy regardless?
octavius simplicitous Basically the entire second and third paragraph was about the dumbest fucking thing you can do to an argument. Combine ad hominem, red herring (irrelevant points to shift focus from the argument), and strawman (misconceive the argument and rebut incorrectly because in a way that's more convenient for you) all in one. Don't do that.
All you've done is _kind of_ loosened up the argument for one country, Bangladesh, _maybe,_ although not so much for Turkey, considering almost all the contemporary politics there only adds to vestige against your side of the argument, and nothing about the second half of my comment, although you talk as if my objective rebuttal is still wrong.
But what the hell was the rest for? You have no idea what you're talking about, you're just ranting at some made-up image in your head you've developed for anyone that says "There's evidence this stuff isn't really a good idea".
It's very simple --Stop ignoring the evidence that the farther you are from the fundamentals of really any of the three main monotheistic religions, the more civilized society on average you have, and don't be hypocritical by having your own blanket statements in your head to preconceive people as "hateful bigots".
Reza is very smart, clever, and educated professional, while the CNN interviewer is "embarassing"". Please do you home work before attacking your guests.
Alpan Tanjung true!
Maybe Reza should have done his homework to actually earn all the degrees he claims rather than making them up. Just Google his name and fake degrees or fraud and you'll find it
Aslan's statements are made on the hopes that no one listening does their own research.
I couldn't agree more. He is simply trying drown the argument in silly details to prevent people from seeing the big picture. Not to mention all the lying by omission.
+Asmerom Nur yes. more people need to watch that video instead of this garbage.
Well actually his statements are accurate. Americans and especially fox news likes to lump everybody together rather than find the problem areas and deal with them.
Nicholas Wicht Lumping people together... Hmmm.... Isn't that exactly what you are doing right now?
Trigger Warning I shouldn't have said Americans but I stand by Fox News.
UA-cam, please stop putting fake news in my recommended, thank you.
Don Lemon is such a smug disappointment sometimes.
This isn’t pwnage. The CNN crew is just very poor at catching his bullshit. First of all, yes, he’s right about some of this, especially the part about female genital mutilation. Maher is wrong. That’s good pwnage. However, he’s being rather sneaky about his claims of equal rights in Muslim countries, and trying to dodge the reality that it is, in fact, Islamic culture on a larger scale that is dangerously antiquated and presents the core problem.
Here’s the thing… Yes, women technically have equal rights in those countries he mentions, as far as their laws are concerned. However, they're still under severe cultural pressures to adhere to anti-woman Muslim codes, like covering their heads and submitting to their husbands. In a lot of these countries, their governance is influenced by their former post-WWI colonizers (UK and France), but on a personal cultural level, Don Lemon is dead right: these majority-Muslim countries do not offer a "free and open society for women".
I’ve been to Indonesia and have friends from there. Trust me, there’s no women equality there. Turkey, same thing. The rural regions of Turkey are nothing like Istanbul. And I’ve spent long summers on the Maghreb coast of Africa in supposedly secular places like Tunisia and Morocco. Same thing there: yes, their laws are modern, and they’re tourist-friendly. Western women can bathe topless on the beaches of Djerba and men can guzzle down all the red wine they want. But the locals know their place, and the women in these countries know they will be abused and ostracized if they even think of stepping out of line. Honor killings are not uncommon in any of the “equal rights” places Mr. Azlan mentions. They suffer from the same poisonous Islamic culture as Saudi Arabia, just on a different scale. On this point, Maher is correct. CNN just sucks at calling him out.
i see your point. however, i think his main point was that you shouldnt generalise or stereotype all muslim people or say that atrocities committed by certain individuals shuldnt be attributed to the entire religion. that is usually what created discrimination/prejudice towards certain people.
poisonous islamic culture kind of says it all about you, doesn't it?
Cenk on this your wrong...Islam treats women like shit...let's get real.
It really depends on the sect of islam you are talking about. Some keep them locked up, some encourage them to have equal rights.
In some countries yes. But not in all countries.
I guess that content of the video was too complicated for you to understand. Go and watch cartoons, you stupid animal.
That's like assuming all christians are strict catholics.
Rezlan failed to point out that the bi laws of local government in Indonisia have ignored the national government and huge discrimination and human rights violations against woman are still the norm. The problem with both Maher and Rezlan is the they both leave out the facts that don't suit their own agenda. Not having a go at either of them as I think they are both ok. This always happens in the media. I will say that I regard myself left leaning but getting more and more frustrated with TYT. They are getting more like a left version of Fox news. Bias championing without fact checking. C'mon guys, you have to be better than this.
I agree. I also think that the title of the video ("Bill Maher destroyed again and again"), along with the alleged "ass whoopings" against Maher prove your point. How can Maher get "destroyed" or "ass whooped" if he isn't able to defend his POV and reply? These would be valid claims if it were a debate and Maher did indeed fail to give adequate responses.
Well, within context, Reza had the task of trying to get two people to understand that the questions they were asking and abuses they were pointing out were too general. Remember he himself said "we're not having this conversation in any legitimate way." I'm sure he could have gotten to that but the hosts kept pressing the same issue incorrectly. I think that is a great question that the host never asked him. And why be frustrated with TYT? For them, I believe what made this a story wasn't about the specifics of the facts left out, but but the behavior of the CNN interviewers/speakers towards their guest and the fact that they were wrong.
Another thing about Indonesia is that while it is the largest "muslim" government, it considers itself secular, not muslim, though of course islam does have its strong influence.
But really, its called a muslim country because it has so many muslims in it, but if you are here, which I am, you will see that they are also one of the more liberal, and therefore hypocritical muslim countries around.
But on another point, Indonesia has come out against extremism consistantly, which is to be expected from a secular liberal country.
Islam here is becoming like christianity in europe and I suspect that in the next 10 years it will be a muslim country in inheritance only, not practice.
If the journalists simply stopped saying "Muslim countries" then he would have addressed their questions and presumably the issues you have pointed out, however, the entire interview was stuck on the issue of them addressing the problem as a Muslim problem rather than simply attributing responsibility to the countries involved.
Walter Hanagriff III influence of Hinduism is strong there as it in Malaysia and of course India maybe that is why they are so accomodating
Well if a comedian tries to take on a gut with Phd. In religious studies obvious he will pummel you. All hail Mr. Reza for shutting those guys up who have only one goal of targeting one specific religion.
In christian countries like brazil we have booty contests and nude beaches
In muslim nations you have to wear bed sheets and never show your ankles
That's nothing to be proud of. Brazil is a super sexist nation
Bernardo S
I think you mean Super Sexy Nation!
Catholicism may be the religion of the majority, but it most certainly is not theocratic.
Holy shit.... Its almost like they're two different cultures.
I'm glad you learned something from this video.
Reza is a good debater, but he's still religious. There's a screw loose.
+lidaliqa how are Christians and Jews NOT religious? Explain that please!
Anyone who is that highly educated and still believes in ancient texts has some serious cognitive dissonance. If you watch his old religious debates with people who know what they are talking about, he tends to not do as well.
***** Yes. I considered that years ago when I was a teenager. Then, I became an adult. Of course you can practice science and also praise your god of choice, but it would be more consistent to apply the scientific method in all areas of life. The default position is to say "I don't know." Once you make that leap of faith and start believing in the supernatural, you lose your critical thinking credibility. It's no coincidence most people become part of the religion they were brought up in, and they can't all be right. That fact alone should be enough for people to realize how silly it is to divide ourselves by what god(s) we believe in or don't believe in, but culture is so intertwined in most religion that it complicates the enlightenment process.
***** Because once you become a believer, you are making a claim to know something that is currently unknowable, not to mention all the evidence against any kind of intervening force. Deism is a different argument, but most religious people claim to be theist which is completely unscientific.
***** Yes, the existence of a god or gods is unknowable, but there is overwhelming evidence against divine intervention. It sounds more like you think I don't know enough because I'm not convinced by the nonsense you are convinced by. I'm going to leave it at that. Take care.
I haven't even started to watch the video. I'm calling it now. Reza Aslan isn't going to own anyone but himself.
I'm sorry. I didnt even realise it was TYT. My doctor said I should stop watching videos from Cenk cause I will literally die. Cya folks.
Russell he debunked everyone
Russell You called it wrong...
Where's the conversation between Aslen and Maher in this video? Not to say that Aslan is wrong but it seems like you show'd clips of Aslan making his arguments without Maher there to defend his side, and on top of that you yourself commentated on them without letting Maher defend himself. It's generally better to bring up your arguments in a debate where the other side can respond, not wait until the debate is over and make snark comments and showing discussions about the discussion.
Imagine if the rest of the world used Uganda to generalize about the entire the Christian world? LOL
Well he you know condemns every religion and seriously Muslim nations should not say this when they don't allow other religions to propagate and kill people who wants to leave religion.
Thats a really good Point.....
Terrible video, Bill maher owned him
oppression is some muslim states? Try most of them. I lived in one, and trust me you don't want to live there
Are you Muslim? Are you Arab? Nope, which figures. Now do us a favor and don't come back.
آلجۅد Yea, how dare he want to live in a ethnically diverse, and traditionally religiously diverse area like the middle east, if he is anything other other than a Muslim or an Arab.
Alex Leaud this regime is 100x worse than the shah, shut your stupid mouth up
آلجۅد i was, not any more, and i don't have to live there to now what life is like there
One of them =/= all of them. How do I representative sample?
Muslim women in India are not treated equally , Muslim women are not treated equally in Indonesia. Muslim women are not treated equally in any Muslim country. In certain Muslim countries they're treated really bad , others they're treated unfairly.
Fact.
Sounds to me like Cenk has a personal grudge against Maher... get over yourself Cenk seriously...
As an atheist, I also don't understand the hate Reza is getting here. Just because you're an atheist and disagree with his beliefs doesn't mean anything he said here was wrong.
He started lying as soon as he opened his mouth. He sounds confident and totally relies on the ignorance and bias of his audience.
He is incapable of honesty.
@@davidlamb7524 Sounds like a Bill Maher fan crying? 😭Oh boo hoo, you're islamophobic beliefs got proved wrong by one guy in a CNN interview, how horrible.
@@davidlamb7524what did he lie about? You said alot of things, just wanna know what he lied about. What he speaks is common sense but you are obviously missing that.
@@delaware12pwner The first thing he said was that FGM is not a Muslim problem but an African problem.
That is a lie.
FGM is only a problem in two non-Muslim African countries or outside Muslim communities within Africa. Making a blanket statement like "it's an African problem" is disparaging to Africa and Africans as a whole and potentially racist as well as false.
Then there is the fact that FGM is also a problem in Asia...and in these cases strictly among Muslim communities only.
So to say it is not a Muslim problem is also a lie as well as being totally irresponsible and detrimental to the welfare of those women suffering FGM under Islamic rule.
@@delaware12pwner ps Common sense is fine but not very useful when the underlying "facts" are untrue.
Turkey is about as representative of muslim countries as Sweden is of christian countries.
I know I am 4 years too late but Maher wasn't even in the video... When Reza can stand on his own against guys like Sam Harris, then I will respect him
Sam Harris? Sam Harris is an embarassing clown.
Islam does promote violence, if that isn't obvious, I don't know what is.
Then again, most religions do.
Are all "followers" of a religion violent? Obviously not, but whether or not you like it, Islam is not a religion of peace.
we cant combat western imperialism through hugs and leaflets
I don't think there has ever been such a thing as a "religion of peace".
Well, most reasonably intelligent people would tell you that. That is not something new. The topic here was these generalisations that affect millions of people to paint them with a single colour, not the religion itself. The fight at hand is simply the 'us against them' type of mentality being promoted constantly in the media to justify more wars and eradicate any possibility of peaceful solutions.
This video is AWESOME!!!! He really did lay down the SMACKDOWN! I would LOVE for Bill Maher to have him as a guest!
Aslan has been on Maher's show many, many times. Post these comments, would be good to see.
thesjgazette Yep, and i have seen the times when Aslan got the smackdown by Bill Maher.
Reza is a religious tool bag, a sympathizer who is caught in his own blindfold.
Xrift87 I'm sure that has happened too, however on this issue, clearly Reza explained his position much, much, better, with facts!
Actually, Aslan is just making typical apologist arguments. Turkey for instance made a huge cultural shift after the crumbling of the Ottoman empire; these reforms were based on the French Jacobins movement. As far as Islam, it has NOT had an enlightenment movement since 1000 years.
He doesn't need to make an argument, he's stating facts. Islam is not an issue in most places. The Middle East is the exception. Bangladesh doesn't have an ISIL movement, nor do most other places.
HowDyaYouLikeMeNow Aslan is not "stating facts", he's lying. FGM happens only in or near muslim communities, and happens not only in Central Africa, as he claims, but throughout Africa, the Middle-East and parts of Asia.
HowDyaYouLikeMeNow
does bangladesh have blasphemy laws?
Have you read “Daughters For Sale”? Written by an Arab woman sold into servitude by her own father. She was raped, beaten, humiliated and enslaved. This is a first hand account. Of course not all places are like this, but it doesn’t change the fact that in many places Islam is used as a foundation for oppression and control. Yes there are secularists, but just because a person chooses not to fully practice all tenets of their faith does not change the fact that those tenets exist.
Nice title "Bill Maher Destroyed". Maher is pretty open minded and if this discussion was between him and Reza he'd probably concede the point.
NO, this is Reza destroying CNN about something Maher said.
Let's get Reza and Maher talking about this for that title and see what the outcome is.
Sometimes Young Turks are so full of shit.
It's kind of love/hate. I do like TYT, but once in awhile they have their heads firmly planted.
Maher is that last person to be open minded. Just that he is a Jew who hates religion and therefore will call a Muslim spade a spade.
This is the only non stereotypical PC view that he subscribes too. Which I consider it more a bigotry of his instead then actual common sense(even though it's common sense to not support this primitive religion)
Islam is like Christianity in the dark ages(Witch burning) just that our well to do White Libtards think it proves they are better people if they stand by these losers.
I have watched both of these two men in great frequency. I don't think he's ever won a debate with or against Bill Maher. I think the points Bill makes are valid and to the point. Mr. Aslan would like us to believe that Bill's comments are only representative of a small minority. I suggest you get HBO and see for yourself they really aren't.
I used to have so much fun turning Islam inside out as an ''atheist,'' even though I don't even like that term since it acknowledges the idea of a non creator - therefore it's not even original it's just alternative to describe non religious. However, atheism is the closest thing to my preference for argument sake. Judaism and Christianity, or course precursors to Islam, inevitably shares the same geological influence with technically shared ''prophets.'' Acknowledging divine people within all these books and yet still at war only justifies traditional tribal tendencies to wage war against each other due to insecurities, not metaphysical harmony. I started reading and listening to much of Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein and as well as Israeli Pro American liberals for peace, that in all, as an intellectual viewer of much one sided media journalism, you can only conclude how most networks strategically make Islam look inferior. This video is an amazing objective example how to literally view the world of continued bigotry. Trust me. The problem with the late 21st Century is that humans can now exaggerate world occurrences with a direct parallel to literary comprehension, which is why people who don't really visualize the bigger picture just mention occurrences in the Koran that they only want to portray. The Quran has way more divine and innocent passages than the evil things the media wants to portray. The Jewish Talmud is just as disgusting if we all want to show contextual (or literal =P) writings of the middle east. We don't do that because you don't want to educate the people you already control.
Reza is debating cnn anchors who are actually massively left wing and biased in his favour. Let him debate Sam Harris or someone who knows what they’re talking about
Oh we saw what happened when reza tried to debate sam harris he was utterly destroyed and tried to pull the "oh he doesn't have a degree in religion, therefore he cannot debate religion" same bs Abby Martin tried to pull with political science
I wouldnt call Eritrea a christian country, about half is moslim.
Ehtiopia is a country where the majority is christian but a big chunk(34 procent) is muslim.
And he hailed turkey as a huge muslim country but what kind of muslims live there?
From wikipedia:
98.3% of Turks revealed they were Muslim.[9] Of that, 16% said they were "extremely religious", 39% said they were "somewhat religious", and 32% said they were "not religious".[9] 3% of Turks declare themselves with no religious beliefs.[9]
So most are a bit or not religious.
Im not saying its only a muslim problem but Reza acts like it has nothing to do with islam at all and i dont think thats right either.
agreed but why do you say "moslim"
It has nothing to do with Islam because no where in the religious scriptures of mainstream Islam does it say that genital mutilation is lawful. It is agreed upon unanimously by accredited Muslim scholars that female genital mutilation is forbidden in Islam.
Muslim*. at least spell it right
TheGiantKiller8 lol@ Asians for driving! That must be like the best worst thing to be known for out of that list lol
Where am i lying?
certainly is open and free society in indonesia and bangladesh ?
religious bullshit has done nothing but hold these little shitholes back
yes. im indonesian and im christian. Although 85% of the people are muslims, Indonesia is not a religious country, since our ideology is Pancasila. Here women and men are equal in politic, education, legal, etc. Women can have driving license. yes there is a lil issue about some radical people, but it's only a minor one.
Bangladesh had a female Prime Minister. How many female head of state has the US had?
1 - Obama.
Muhammad Aizat Che Azemi it doesnt make women to be more self dependent, similar with India although we have large number!her of female politicians , CM and had a PM , still women's r oppressed here !!
i really don't know if he and cenk are purposefully misleading or just lack the mantel ability to differentiate between these cases, all the countries he listed as moderate and treat people fairly are more or less secular and democratic and guarantees freedom of religion at the very least & doesn't role by Islamic sharia, although Indonesia still has lashing and few other barbaric laws, also the hosts poorly addressed the issue thus giving raza the chance to manipulate the conversation to his advantage
I love to watch Reza aslan. He is a genius. You don’t have the guts to argue with reza.🤣🤣
Or the knowledge. Mashallah knowledge is power
and zakir
My argument would be like: can I stop burning all those degrees you claim to have
Damn nitpicking, just put ''some'' in front of ''Muslim countries'' and all the points Bill and these news anchors made are valid.
You're incorrect. Then their points would have been completely different, if you say "muslim countries" you're talking about islam, if you say "some muslim countries" then your're talking about specifics not the entire religion. I think it's pretty obvious that they wanted to talk about Islam, or else they would have just corrected themselves. Remeber the questions Don asked "Does Islam promote violence?" That was their whole story.
Film Punks Dailies Very astute... I can see why Cenk defended Reza, this was basically an overreaching religious attack piece.
Even "the majority of" would cover it. Bill did not say: "*all* muslim countries", so what he said was completely correct. Aslan is just a lying apologist.
When cenk said who are you talking about it put something in my head... Why the fuck am I being judged because of other Christians... I'm Christian I get it but come on I'm not like other Christians... Don't judge one by the other.
Yes we do share a core belief. But I am asking is logical to judge a Christian that you know nothing of just because of ones actions.
Albert Cozier
No but do you as a Christian speak out against your fellow Christians when they commit wrong? Or do you merely say, oh he's just more fundamental.
Albert Cozier "Why the fuck am I being judged because of other Christians"
You should speak out when that happens. It's wrong when and if it happens.
Note that people make assumptions based on what they do and do not know about you. And that people prejudge, it will happen and there's nothing wrong with it.
However, when someone would say something bad and you feel incorrectly included, speak out.
I am me i am not someone else don't base me on the group
Except when thousands of Muslims do it at the same time. Right Albert? BTW The Young Jerks constantly judge.
When Christians do bad it's usually in small numbers and victims are in the small numbers (one is too many) compared to other bad acts.
Total PAWNGE, Note to anyone who wanted debate Reza "The Lion" Aslan, read book first, read a LOT of book first
_"Note to anyone who wanted debate Reza "The Lion" Aslan, read book first, read a LOT of book first"_
No need to exaggerate. You can just read the Qur'an and Hadith and then ask Reza lots of questions about why he's pretending to be a muslim when he doesn't follow it.
Gnomefro Because Islam is monolithic?
It's like saying you need only read the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights if you want to understand the country and label everyone who deviates from what's written there as unamerican.
Read book to aquire smart.
Lukas Lying by omission. Religious types depend on it a _lot_.
TheRobster2007 We submitted our comments at the exact same second, I think that means we have to get gay married now..
I used to be a Muslim from Iran. About 5 years ago I converted to Christianity due to intolerance, extremism, sexism and homophobia in Islam.
I suppose you could say that Reza destroyed Maher, if it wasn't for the fact that Aslan is blatantly lying. Egypt has 90% Female genital mutilation (FGM) rates, Sudan is 88% neither are considered central African countries. Same for Mali 89% and Mauritania. Also, in the countries that he sites as Christian that have high rates of FGM, why do they do it? For RELIGIOUS reasons!
Furthermore, the idea that in Indonesia that women are treated as equals is preposterous. In fact, Indonesia has a FGM rate of near 90%. Bangladesh, although improving is no bastion of female equality either. Lack of equal rights for women in Turkey is one of the main things keeping it out of the EU.
I have traveled in many Muslim nations, and the majority of the people in the areas are generous and peace loving people, but to claim that Islam is not used to subjugate women or justify violence is pure codswallop.
He said its an african problem. is egypt not in africa? is sudan not in africa? i dont see where he is "blatantly lying"
kbmagnus12 He made it out to be a "Central African" problem, but Egypt and Sudan are in Saharan Africa. But fair enough, it is also a problem in the Middle east, including Kurdistan, in Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Yeman and other regions. It is also a problem in Asia (almost exclusivelin the Muslim regions of Aisia), including Tajikistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, as well as being widespread in parts of Pakistan and India. And to assert that it is a free and open society for women in Indonisia of Bangladesh is simply bald faced avarice.
jnkggl sure but still. to simply say its a "muslim country problem" is misleading. the reporters are clearly not listening to him. and they didnt do their homework since they never pointed out what you did.
kbmagnus12 True, I have less respect for the conduct of the reporters than I do for the debate that went played out on real time. While Ben Affleck, Michael Steele and Nicholas Kristof made some very good points about negative stereo typing and broad brushing, Bill Maher and Sam Harris were also making very defensible points. W/o any effective opposition Aslan ran roughshod over Maher & Harris, but used inflated and misleading rhetoric to do so. If Maher or especially Harris had been there to defend themselves Aslan would have had egg all over his face. If Hitchens, dog bless his history on earth, he would have wiped the floor with Aslan for speaking such tergiversating half truths.
Either you can think logically or you think Aslan is not actively misrepresenting the facts.
Either/or
*****
FGM is only the easiest example. Laugh your ass off, you will remain a fool.
*****
We agree completely so what is your point?
+Larry Burke I don't understand can you explain where he was wrong?
+Larry Burke yep. He lies about his credentials
+Larry Burke There is no logic behind Bill Maher's blind hatred of Muslims in order to fuel his zionist propaganda.
He did it again. Kudos to him. You have to admire him for his tenacity and sharp thinking. But especially for enduring quit well all the prejudice and pre conceived mindsets people have against arabs and muslins in general. I confess he taught me a thing or two in this video.
But his examples of good Muslim countries were not Arabs. Also he generalizes Africa by saying its and African problem a continent with 54 countries how hypocritical .
Mike Marson Turkey is an arab country, i think. But what are you saying exactly? That arabs are violent by nature? Come on now... you know better than that. But you are completely right about the Africa part. Thank you for point it out.
dvderif No its not an Arab country arabs are a minority it's Turkish and Kurdish who are the majority.
Mike Marson Ok. I'll take your word for it because i don't know. So what? What are you implying here?
Basically he indirectly made it seem like the problems with oppressing lied in the Arab countries because the ones he named were non arab. The the Muslim religion originated in the Arab world and the are the original Muslims who have had the religion deeply entrenched in their culture. Turkey was a christian empire at a point in history. The Asian countries have there traditional cultural practices from before Islam .
I thought Eritrea was 50% Christian and 50% Muslim yet a secular state?
Maher does make a very valid point that liberals should be more outspoken about the subjugation, homophobia and intolerance in the Muslim world. Yes, there are moderates but that shouldn't blind us from the serious problems rooted in a religion like Islam. I know so many liberals that bash Christianity but use the "multiculturalism" to give Islam a green light. That being said, Reza does make some good points.
Thank you, that was the point that Maher was trying to make, liberals are letting political correctness trump their values.
This show is terrible
