The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline and Ford Club Wagon throughout various stages of its production) is a range of full-size vans produced by the American automaker Ford. Introduced for the 1961 model year as the replacement for the Ford F-series panel van, the model line is in its fourth generation. Previously produced as a cargo van and passenger van, the E-Series is currently only offered as a cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).
After the 2014 model year, the E-Series cargo and passenger vans were discontinued and replaced by the Ford Transit. From 1980 to 2014, the model line was the best-selling full-size van in the United States with a nearly 80% share of its market segment.[3][4] With a 60-year production run, the E-Series is second only to the Ford F-Series (1948-present) in longevity of models produced by Ford.
From 1961 to 2005, the E-Series was assembled by Lorain Assembly at Lorain, Ohio; assembly is currently located at Ohio Assembly at Avon Lake, Ohio, which has produced the model line since 1975.
For 1975, the Econoline/Club Wagon were given a complete redesign. Based on an all-new chassis, Ford became the first American manufacturer to adapt body-on-frame construction to a full-size van.
The new-generation Econoline would become common not only in its own right, but as the basis for other vehicles. With a full frame, the Econoline became popular as a cutaway van chassis; the design served as a basis for many ambulances, and various types of trucks and buses. The shared drivetrain with the F-Series marked the beginning of aftermarket four-wheel drive conversions. During the 1970s, the Econoline became popular as a basis for van conversions. Using the sparsely-equipped Econoline cargo van as a basis, a luxurious interior was fitted, along with extensive customization of the exterior.
Chassis
1975-1978 Ford Econoline 150 Chateau
1988 Econoline 350 cutaway van
1980s Ford Club Wagon XLT
To increase the versatility of the full-size van line, the Econoline was developed using body-on-frame construction for the first time. In addition to increasing the strength of the chassis, the configuration allowed more commonality with the F-series trucks. As before, the Twin I-Beam front suspension was used. In its new configuration, the engine was moved further forward and lowered relative to the body. The van grew in size: the 124 inches (3,150 mm) short-wheelbase configuration was a half inch longer than the previous long-wheelbase chassis; the new long-wheelbase chassis was 138 inches (3,510 mm), the longest wheelbase full-size van sold until 1990. After the 1984 model year, the 124-inch wheelbase Club Wagon passenger van was discontinued, and the 124-inch wheelbase Econoline Cargo Van was discontinued after the 1990 model year, leaving the 138-inch wheelbase as the sole option.
In 1982, to increase the fuel economy of the Econoline without a major loss in engine output, Ford introduced the option of a 6.9 L IDI diesel V8 produced by International Harvester; in 1988, this was enlarged to 7.3 L. The diesel V8 engines were available only in Econoline 350s (or Club Wagons sold on the same chassis). The cutaway version was available with the larger (5.8 or 7.5 L) gasoline V8s or the diesel V8.[16]
Due to the popularity of automatic transmissions in full-size vans, Ford discontinued all manual transmissions after the 1989 model year. The column-shifted 3-speed departed after 1986, leaving the floor-shifted 4-speed overdrive manual as standard. The four-speed was replaced by a Mazda-sourced 5-speed M5OD for 1988.
Nice build. Looks like something you'd see in CHiPs.
"Surfers RULE" episode !
It does! Love that show!
I love CHiPs as well. Just scored the Revell Kawasaki bike.
Great show
Round 2 is absolutely a blessing for our hobby. Keep up showing them off. Thank you.
More to come!
Hpiguys a blessing too. Always bringing us these awesome reviews, techniques, and motivation with his positive attitude. A true credit to this hobby!
I recently picked up the F&F Revell 71 Plymouth GTX after watching your vid. Gonna do a "what if" vintage LE/Highway Patrol Interceptor . Now I am gonna have to snag this kit too!
Maybe do a Beach Patrol EMS surfer wagon?
@@blkft Thanks man!
I'll keep having fun and you keep enjoying your hobby! Cool idea!
Dang, incredible model. All the stickers, the woody motif, all of it. Fantastic. You did a fantastic job. Love the color
Thanks, much appreciated!
Which videos have you dry brushing silver patina onto black frame please?? 👍👍
time to see round2 bring out the gm vans agin as custom/ateam
I'd love to do the A-Team GMC!
That's it, I'm going on vacation with a van just like that. 👍
That van wreaks of shag carpet, love potion and Yacht Rock Radio playing on the 8 track!
where’s the waterbed ?
Sea Breeze spilled in the back too! LOL
@@johnwilliams7102 Oh that's part of the love potion smell, man!! LOL
@@hpiguy Supa-Fly!!
@@hpiguy I was thinking,,, HAI KARATE lol
Awesome, even the boards look like they were scaled perfect, Hodad would have bolted on those boards!
Dig this build Hpi.
Thanks!
Beautiful 😀 I would be proud to display it on my shelf 👍👍🇬🇧✨
Enjoy!
Love the 70s disco music in keeping with the era of the van! Looks like I'm going to have to get this as a companion for my Revell 70s Custom Chevy Van.
You should!
Sharp looking van..i've got the 1976 ford "phantom" econoline van amt model kit 😊😊😊👍👍👍
Nice 👍
I really enjoy your videos and builds. I always hesitated because some modellers build way better than me. But I am starting to enjoy boxstock builds. Thank you.
Never compare your stuff to others. That's like not buying a motorcycle because you can't win a race with it. It doesn't matter as long as you have a good time.
Enjoy YOUR hobby and have fun building for you.
Miss the “Fun Van” era!! Great build and paint! Captured the vibe of the 70’s well..
Man what a beauty!👌🥰👍I remember building one of those way back in the mid 70s! Awesome job!👏👌😎👍
It's about darn time somebody makes a van these days!! The last one I did was the Cuckoo Nest custom Ford van from AMT I found at a model contest!!!!! I plan on buying two of these kits soon and making one big van out of two.......... a real Kustom Van from the '70's... Afterall I was a member of a van club in the days.... and oh, if you LOVE vans hit jjlightning on youtube for ideas. You're welcome. Nice job..........
Super build, I love your channel, keeps on getting me buying these cool kits more than I can build actually. Currently making this one the same way as yours, facing some set backs such as for the decals, it's best to crape the "econoline" and "chateau" markings otherwise they don't apply well, and to have the custom wheels still rolling on the backing disk, it's been tough, there is a design issue there, parts don't fit the way they should (you probably did not notice as you prefer your models don't roll). I'll try with the side pipes though. OK, back to it ;). Cheers from Belgium.
What thickness are the windows used in this kit please. Is clear styrene (in stores) available in this thickness/gauge? Thinking of using this kit & convert/stretch into a Super Window Van as an upgrade to Ironside's van. Thanks for this video, looks great
Never really a fan of AMT quality. Not sure if it was the choice of plastic (shrink rates) or the gating used to form the parts. AMT model parts never seemed to fit well to each other.
Thats not black primer it's red gold job man
Yup, red primer. Mistakes sometimes happen when making videos. Thanks.
@@hpiguy Ahaahahha, I thought I was tripping Man!
@@hpiguy no problem ive done plenty
I'm doing this one now and your video was a big help understanding some things. I thought of putting some felt fabric in the back for carpet
You do awesome artwork on your models man I really like how you do your stuff I've been doing a lot of fans and other custom stuff myself been thinking about putting some on UA-cam the check out I put a lot of time and hours I detail a lot of stuff also how do I go about doing that if you could help me out please and thanks
Got this one on the bench now. I'll have pics on your FB page in a few days.

Thanks, much appreciated!
bro that van makes me think about when I was a child I was born in 1973 and when I was growing up I used to see Vans very similar to that everywhere this thing just struck a nerve thank you it's beautiful peace
If this van's a rockin!!
Nice build! You should have played some surfing music will you was building. 😁😁😁
Good idea!!
How about the Ventures or Beach Boys ?
@@dunhill1 The licenses for that music cost about $50,000 per video, per song.
Very generous of you to offer to donate that and acquire the license to that branded music for me!!! Do you need the channel PayPal or do you want to pay BMG Music and Sony directly and send me the licensing rights forms? ;)
Thanks man!
@@hpiguy Whoa. I hope this is in jest. I was simply responding to Craig Wells Jr who stated you should play some surfin' type music as you build. I did not state nor imply original copyrighted actual tunes be played. Since you were humming and kind of singing in the build, I thought Craig meant you yourself humming or singing "surfin' music" and I simply threw in, to be cute, specific artist that we all know & love that you could hum or sing to on the next video. That was it--nothing more. I really don't know if singing or humming an actual Beach Boys tune also constitutes copyright infringement. My apologies; I didn't mean to get you worked up.
@@dunhill1 LOL, I wasn't aware that I was offended or upset. Just thanking you in advance for paying the license costs for me. Thanks man! ;)
I built this kit yrs ago and I used real wood and stained them for the roof racks.
It’s amazing that by building a model or just seeing one can evoke such great memories. Thank you for you efforts. A beautiful build, (as usual).
Glad you enjoyed it!
How do you keep the paint from orange pealing since you're just spraying straight out of the can?
"Everybody can go surfing' now - grab your glue, I'll show you how - come on build a model with me..."
catchy tune
Nice!!! Thanks!
Had to stop building to do The Hustle.
Did you also finger point in the air while you hustled?
I'm pretty new to model cars but these instructions were horrid. The worst I've ever encountered
Cool build Chris, just picked up that kit and can’t wait to get started. KUTGW buddy.
Thanks, enjoy!

This Baby's Ready to go Catch some Waves....
Or just Mello Out somewhere Groovin' to some Tunes...
Sweet Work.....
Appreciate that!
Another great build Chris thanks again for posting.
No problem 👍
Hey great work. I currently drive a full-sized '78 Dodge.
My question is could you do a commission of 58 Marauder with the high performance 430 with three Holley Carburetor & opening hood?
I don't do commission builds, but thanks for asking!
Again, nice work. I just commented on the "Cruising" version a few minutes ago, asking about the wheelbase. This one looks even better for my RC build, mainly for the fender flares and roof rack (this will be a 4x4 RC).
If I keep watching your videos, I'm to find myself getting back into model building again :D
Holy crap, this is an incredible build Chris!!😎 I love this presentation 👍
Thanks a bunch!
I had the original and it came with two motorcycles and surf boards.
So cool!!! I gave a girl a ride in my wagon... I know I know, not a "Chevy Van" but anyhoo. Growing up, a kid in the 70's, I absolutely Love Love Love this build!!! Far out man!!!
Right on!
Great job! Love the music too!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm glad to get a 70s boogie van. I just got this one to go with the Cruising Van. But one small criticism. The Wide Oval tires are too skinny for a custom van and with the flares they look smaller. But that's where my parts box comes in. Great build as always Chris.
Thanks for watching!
Round 2 is creating some great kits! Your videos and info is always spot on!
The decals in these recreated models are awesome!!
Glad you like them!
just stumbled upon your channel....good stuff....I like to build models too.....have you ever considered trying an airbrush?? I am not criticizing your paint jobs....they do look really good... I just recently invested in an airbrush and it made painting small parts and even large parts like chassis and bodies much easier and a lot less paint is wasted...the possibilities are endless....just a thought.
I own numerous airbrushes.
These are fast, fun, easy kit reviews. Once I have to mix, clean, mix, clean, etc it slows me down and I stop having near as much fun.
It's a personal choice, I'm glad you enjoy making your models your way.
Thanks!
I ĺoved to build model cars when I was young. I got my license and haven't built one since then. I still loved them and always looked at them and once in awhile would buy one. I'm retired now and have been watching your videos. Well I'm hooked again. I counted and I've got 75 unbuilt models. I started with an easy one to see if I could still do it. I've found that the eyes aren't nearly as sharp and the hands aren't nearly as steady but I am really enjoying it and it gives me something to keep me busy during the cold weather. Thank you for your videos, tips and tricks. Please keep them coming
Keep having fun Ron!
I still have my '76 E-250, a rust-free California native. I was going to part and scrap it, but it seems there is a resurgence of interest in these. Maybe deserves a new life??
I'm sure someone would buy it!
Finished model, I can almost see the big side door sliding back, and smoke from the wacky weed, billowing out, having permeated the shag carpet and velour covered walls ...... good times!
Yeah man!! Groovy!!
I love this tune playing, while I watch this again. Im talking about the first tune! Lol! It's always nice coming back here or to any of your videos. Thank you!
Thanks for listening!
Hey HPI guy (or anyone else if you'd like), if you vent the spray booth to the outside will it keep your house from filling up with paint fumes? Is it still necessary to wear a mask? I'm contemplating getting one of these booths so I don't have to wait until spring to start painting again.
I would still use a respirator. The booths aren't professional vent hoods or fume extractors.
You must have the midas touch, I've never had much luck with the prismacolor pencils. Maybe wrong application by me or I'm just a putz lol.
Takes a light touch on those gauges, press too hard and it's all over.
Wow! I learned a lot about detailing on this one. I can see I've been making things too difficult for myself. Lol. Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Would be cool to build a Super Van like Ford did back in the 70s. But they used the smaller Transit van. I'm sure someone has built something similar.
Yeah, I've seen the little van way back as Star Wars kits, maybe they will reissue those with the new license for SW.
I haven't built a van since 81 cool want to do one now . Back then used one of mom's shirts for lining and carved popsicle for divider and bed . Mom was a little POed when she found what was left of her shirt I didn't hide well enough lol.
Well grab this one and have fun!
Holy shit💪😃😃😃excuse me. But this is a realy good work. Looks nice.
The color they You give is exelent 💪👍
Thanks, much appreciated!
I seen your videos when you use
Rustoleum is that just there regular spray paint or specific kind I used that paint on a model once and it bubbled and cracked looked horrible
I use every type, but 2X is the most common I use.
do you build for models shows? if so I would love to see a vid, or a few vids on you building a show stopper .. your models always come out awesome, would love to see 1 of the show cars being built. (if you do of course)
Nope, shows are not my thing. But I used to go and look at all the cool stuff when we had them here.
Where do i find the firey orange paint?
I'd google it for places to buy.
I was wondering that myself. I thought that color really looked good on that van!
@@hpiguy found it at Hobby Lobby all online places did not and the one that claimed it did, didn't. Should have checked HL first. Thanks fro your great vids Chris. As always " you keep making them.... I'll keep watching them"

Freaking turned out nice.Gives me ideas for mine..Lots of neat little tricks ya reveal,I like that!.Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Nice. I might have to pick one of these up, like I need more kits..... Like how you did the tires, gonna have to borrow that idea.
You should!
It’s a pity that we my not see some of the new kits coming out here in the uk, by the time you buy the kit plus post, then import tax it’s just to much. And trying to get some thing from Europe at the moment is near on impossible
Yeah, I feel the same about Revell Germany kits. In the US they add a lot to the price.
Nice it’s so surprising how good these models can look :)
Thanks!
That's beautiful very nice work Chris, love that colour... What is it garden paint?
Testor's Lacquer on this one. Don't you watch the video or just the last 45 seconds? LOLOLOLOL

This build was a stone gas my brotha. Do you remember the movie " The Van"? Classic.
I do, I own it!
Great Job! My Friend groovy paint job and build as always.
Is it my GRUMPY Old Man eyes cause it looked like red primer on the surfboards? Because ther graphics said black primer......lol. Not that it matters anyway! As Eeyore says! Keep the builds coming....
Yup, I used red, labeled it black by mistake. Thanks!
@@hpiguy no big deal I was just adding a little humor!😉
I just bought this kit and with decals from Cult TV Man of the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine! I have the Crusin Van too so gonna use the spare tire and the round windows from that kit. Painting this is gonna be fun!
I built similar to 77 Ford Econoline you turn it into 1981 Ford Econoline grill on the van when I was high school 40 years ago here Albany NY at Vo-tech school
Hey there Chris! I have a question for you; I'm looking to buy a spray booth like yours and I've watched your review. However, you didn't quite say how it performs. Does it work well with stronger smelling paints like aerosols? Would you recommend it for someone in a small appartment, or is it better suited for a workshop? I mostly use hobby acrylics, but sometimes real automotive paints for certain models so I don't want to fill my place with fumes or nasty smells. Thanks a lot, and great build as always!!!
I use a Master Airbrush brand spray booth you can purchase on Amazon. Chris uses a somewhat different one that you can collapse into a briefcase like design to carry around with you. It has a fan that attaches to an expandable air hose ducting you can attach to your window. It sucks out most of the aerosols when spray painting or airbrushing. Mine really comes in handy. It has two fans instead of one. Really does the job. Some spray paints will leave an odor behind if you are wanting to spray paint in your apartment, but it's really not that bad if you don't mind a little smell. I would recommend using one in an apartment, or a small workshop, your choice.
The filters are replaceable. You can either order the pre-cut ones Master Airbrush sells, or you can purchase a Filtrete Basic blue colored furnace filter at Home Depot/Lowe's wherever they are sold. They are about $5, and can be cut to size.
This is the one I got. www.amazon.com/Master-Airbrush-Portable-Lighting-Painting/dp/B07RR18MVW/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Master+Airbrush+Extra+Large+Dual+Fan+Lighted+Portable+Hobby+Airbrush+Spray+Booth+with+LED+Lighting+for+Painting+All+Art%2C+Cake%2C+Craft%2C+Hobby%2C+Nails%2C+T-Shirts+%26+More.+Includes+6+Foot+Exhaust+Hose&qid=1612396889&sr=8-2
I use a respirator. If you are going to paint inside a home I'd make sure to vent it all outside and use a room that you can leave for a while and let the fan run.
Hey, that was awesome. I always loved making models. I never did neat work, but I loved the techniques. I really feel that I can do a better job if I give a build a go. thanks.
I would love to see a video of your displayed kits!
I build far too many to have them all on display. Thanks

Yes, people are all too happy to point out that I called it black primer when it was red primer.
Thanks!
@@hpiguy Just having fun with you, nothing serious. Not all of us are critics.
I'm curious about something, say what if u dont have paints can u "paint" models with markers?
You might be able to but it would take a long time and a lot of markers.
@@hpiguy ok well i got patience so time doesnt matter
It's nice that AMT chose to create many variations of this cool van. Wasn't there also a van with " graveyard scene" decals?
They did, and they rereleased it a few years back, calling it The Phantom. I believe in the 70’s it was The Vantom, but someone now owns the rights to that name.
Yes, their vans have seen many issues and styles of the theme.
Nice! Can't wait til they send you a Kenworth mixer.
I've got it. Watch the FB page, I showed it a while back, just haven't done the build yet.
Sweet 👍👍
Thanks 👍
Just went on the link for model round up, and there was no option to post to the UK?
You'll have to email them directly, they will ship anywhere from what they've told me, but it's not cheap through our postal services.
My uncle had a blue one with winds shag carpet and fuzzy fur walls and a bed, when I was a kid.
I have a question the modeling kits dont come with coloer??
You will have to paint most model kits.
New techniques (to me) with the black tape backing to the side lights ---- fantastique ! I love these AMT E-100 kits ; now it's time to bring out the MPC version and the MPC 1/20 scale in c.1974 guise (stock parts) .
I was quite looking forward to watching you build this new release . Chris ! You didn't disappoint !
Thanks, much appreciated!
nice job. enjoyed the 70s background music.....
Glad you enjoyed it!
How do you determine to use super glue or Not? Thanks.
Bare plastic, I use model glue.
Final assembly with painted parts, I use super glue.
Round2 Models has a bunch of new Star Trek and Star Wars kits coming out this year. The next 3 kits that I would like to see a full build review on,is the Kenworth/Challenge cement mixer,American Superliner Tractor, and the Ford L 9000 Tractor.
Yes, I'm looking forward to those reissued old school Star Wars kits, and the Voyager, etc.
Incredible. As a model van collector, I will be ordering this kit next. I love the way you finished it just like the previous Ford Custom Van (grey and black). I did notice that all the sprues are exactly the same ones AMT put in all their Ford releases. Only the decals and a few mods are different from kit to kit. I have all those sprues memorized. I do love that Round 2 put in those great tires. Some of the old original van kits have 2 part styrene tires, which are bad. I was wondering why you don't use Bare Metal Foil for the trim, around the window frames, and Ford logos? After priming, I will burnish down BMF over the FORD lettering on the hood, paint it completely. Once the paint is dry, I take a fine sanding stick and remove the layer of paint revealing the BMF underneath. The effect is great and has that chrome finish. I also put a piece of BMF in the recesses of the turn signals then paint over it with Tamiya clear orange and clear red for a great reflective appearance. I'm going to try your method with the silver Sharpie as it seems much faster. I've also stopped including engines in my van models simply because you can't see much of anything. I glue down the small hood and they become curb side saving me precious time. I really appreciate you sharing this build video. Very inspiring. I hope you do more van models like ones from MPC, Monogram, and Revell.
Speed is the reason I don't use BMF. I get these reviews done in a total of 8-9 hours on a van like this. Two full builds per week, with 30-40 minute videos on each one, plus bonus content and reviews.
Simple no time to BMF the trim and still keep it fun and relaxed for me.
Thanks and enjoy your hobby your way!
Ah the 70s lots of cool cars/ vans and funky music
Thanks, much appreciated!
Love this 70s hippie/surfer/love/shaggin wagon van, this kit has a amazing decals kit in it,just awesome details and decals I was gonna get this, but grabbed a vw beetle today instead, great unboxing and review as allways keep the good videos coming,2 thumbs up👍👍💯
Glad you like it!
I just got back in the hobby after 40 years and find your videos very helpful! Just got the van kit and cannot wait to get it assembled. A couple of questions if you don't mind 1) Can I use DupliColor automotive lacquer spray paint on plastic models? and 2) i noticed you paint some parts while still on the plastic sprue. How do you touch up the edges where the part is cut off?
You need to test other paints on plastic to see, I don't know if those will melt it or not.
I touch up areas with a brush as needed.
Miss the van craze that was back in the day....damn I'm old! 😉😆😂
Nice build guv'nor....now we need some Dodge trucks and vans in styrene! 🤜🏻🤛🏻🍻
Right on!
Same body mold as the rest of ford kits all they do add different decals
And?
These days, my "picking up hot chicks" is going out for some buffalo wings! lol
Medium only, this old man can't take the hot stuff!
Play that funky music white boy! LOL!
Haha, thanks!
Sometimes you show previous builds with the current build. I was wondering if you would put "returning" kits together, at least in the slideshow at the end. A parking lot scene or something.
Great job. Keep it up.
That's a good idea!
Las luces traseras las colocaste al revés. El indicador de Reversa va hacia abajo.
While I'm glad you think you found something to criticize, it was very common on custom vans to flip the taillights like that.
Thanks!
