Not only one of the greatsst songs ever, but one of the most exciting, anticipation-building intros of all time! It’s such a looooooong, expertly crafted build, with the intermittent drum fills slowly coming to life like this huge, magnificent machine is about to awaken after lying asleep for 1,000 years… and then Mark’s half-cocked wah riff with its glorious harmonics. OMG we have finally arrived at the gates of heaven, and guess what? It’s all about microwaves and fridges over there 😂

How awesome is this?! I was just listening to this in my room at night with by headphones on, and at the start, my room was partially illuminated due to a light in the neighbour’s house shining through my window. As the intro built up as it does with the awesome intermittent drum fills and synth sounds, it felt spectacular and I knew that moment where everything stops and the iconic riff comes in was coming up, but nothing could prepare me for what happened. Bang on the kick drum hit at 1:42 where everyone stops and the iconic guitar riff comes in, the neighbour’s light turned off and my room submerged into darkness, making that intro even more atmospheric than it already is. I honestly can’t describe how it felt, it was as if some sort of other worldly force decided that was going to happen and it was phenomenal.
Best openings to a song in history. No fluff. No brakes. Just straight gas.
I want my early 90's MTV. 80'S were fun too from what I can remember, I was born in '81, the same year it was born. What a great time to grow up.

I just turned 65, this brings back memories of a great band and how MTV brought these groups to life in the pre on line world!
Turned 76 this year and I remember when my daughter and I were addicted to MTV and this music.

@@marksimpson2321As I understand it, the material wasn’t fitting for TW’s style, but they kept the MfN intro and the drum fills, also I think it’s still Terry on Walk of Life. Their live shows just wouldn’t have been the same without him though.

In my opinion, on every album made with Dire Straits and as a solo artist, Mark Knopfler takes the listener on an journey, full of wit, sometimes satire, love and also melancholy. There is a great deal of reflection, Mark being a phenomenal observer and interpretor of whatever is going on around him or wherever he is looking. For me, the music and lyrics are unique and masterful. Whilst many rightfully acknowledge and focus on his brilliant technical ability as a musician, his writing and lyricism sometimes is ignored, which is a great shame, since Mark Knopfler is a fantastic and conscientious storyteller, deserving every music prize there is out there ❤✍️ 🎸 🎶 // Carin in Sweden

Dire Straits is one of the classic bands of that era. Nothing like them, so sophicated a sound. In my opinion above every other band going in that time in terms of smart content of their lyrics and complimentary musicianship. Under appreciated. Could listen to them anytime. The youngs ones don't know what they don't know.

Man im 50 i grew up on awesome music
I loved this when I was 10(?) about, and I always loved seeing and hearing them- extremely talented and in sync- with Mark doing the most fun riffs at the best time(timing). So- I was lit up inside when I watched Sultans of Swing performed live by them(on my tablet- so back in the 80's it recorded). Anyways, I really love, and always have, this Band- their own unique sound and style musically. Love this Band, the memories associated, Great music
