Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

Does it make you feel better that he really walks out on her and their daughter and doesn't see the kid? If you think about it, it's less of a love story when you take that into consideration.
"True love is not gazing into each other's eyes; it's looking out in the same direction." This movie reminds me of that. It's not enough to be in love or be attracted, a successful relationship requires shared goals, shared values, a shared vision of the future.
They were attracted to each other but had no shared values. When physical attraction fade away, they failed to turn romance into long lasting love and friendship, like many failed marriages.
This scene is heartbreaking. The look on her face when he says this isn't going to work and when he leaves the key. She feared those words but never actually imagined he would leave her and leave the keys. In the end I believe they truly loved each other, but they were just too different and even if he tried to change a bit for her or do some stuff to please her, it wasn't enough for her and she wasn't willing to do the same for him regarding her personality. In the end her work and beliefs were stronger than the love she had for him, and the same with him, the lifestyle he wanted and couldn't get with her was stronger. But I believe he did love her like she did. You can tell several times specially on the last scene. How they both wish things were different.
I felt same way .....so many people think he left to be safe/ comfortable .....I have always believed he left becase he could not be enough ...and knew it
I had a relationship like this once and God knows I still think of her until this day. I do wish her a beautiful and prosperous life.
Too harsh after softie scenes....seems unreal.....😧
same back in 78! We still talk as friends he was then so Hubbel/Redford look alike.
She should have won the Oscar for this role! Phenomenal actress and singer
Watch all her movies at least 3 or 4 times !!!! She should have won the statue!!!!❤
The chemistry between these two actors was so wrong, it made this movie so right, so perfect.
What a great way to put it.
Perfect idea
In which way?
I think he did love her. She was intense and passionate about the things she believed in. It was her life. He seemed more conservative and liked the good things in life, including the high society people he hung out with. I do think he loved her and she definitely loved him, but it seemed her beliefs came first. Love, love this movie. They were so beautiful in it.
Back when a real
Man would show up and end things in person.
Bex May: rare and almost unheard of. (Went out with a guy for 6 years and his way of ending it was to simply not show up or call. Simple for him, maybe.)
She doesn't deserve him. She is too wrapped up in her Own causes. No time for real love. It's always about trying to save the world 🌎. God says live your life leave the rest up to him✝️
@@poodledog8479 She has strong principles and convictions, but she doesn't know how to balance them in relationships. She wanted him and his friends to transform themselves into seeing life through her eyes. Whenever you try to change a man and/or woman, rather than accept them as they are before you even enter into the relationship, you've lost the battle. He knew she had principles and convictions; he even admired them, but she couldn't find a balance to really understanding his convictions about social, economic and political issues.
You are right about "live your life, and leave the rest up to God" but so many people want to live their lives outside of His Word, His Will, and His Commandments. We have a responsibilty to walk in obedience to His Word. HE said, Trust in Him, and lean not unto your own understanding. He said, Believe on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved".
@@linda_smilesrfree2744 Sad that her intolerant liberalism destroyed them.
@@deepsix1827 yeah. There is an issue with both sexes right now. Sigh.
He did love her. They just had different ideas. They will always love each other even if they can't be together.
Agree sometimes you can love someone and just know in your heart it’s not going to last forever too many obstacles to make it work even with having a child, still wasn’t enough 😢
I like the film and there are tear jerking moments in it but not sure what's so romantic about it. He was never invested and used her and she was too needy because she could sense he wasn't all in.
I love this movie, I understand that a relationship or marriage can end because of different personalities, ideas, or reliigions, but how he cannot love a daughter from that marriage and with the woman he so loved.
Agree I think that part is what gets me the most is leaving your daughter of the women you loved regardless of differences but I think back then men did this all the time just leave the household without any obligation, thinking it would be best in the long run.
She was spot on. Loved this movie.
Är det kärlek att man gråter hela tiden.detta händer när en stark kvinna träffar en svag man.❤🥰
Saddest ending of a movie for me to watch I have someone I'll who will always be the love of my life too..

Thank you so much for sharing
these clips, such a treat!
I always cry at this scene
Love this movie!!!!
She was beautiful.
Beautiful? In what universe?
@@abbatrouble a universe where the bars are dark and the wine is flowing. Apart from her personality she could act and sing.
Wow what an amazing scene
Love this 🎥🍿🎥🍿🎥 movie!!!!
We humans are created differently and we are supporters of our own approach !! It's good that there are many of them, this one is not the only one .... ︎ ♡ ♥ ︎ ♡
great movie
My favorite movie
He was too simple for her. She needed a champion.
And she chased him, forced a relationship, which is something a woman should never do.
One side love is the worse kind
Acteurs et l interpretation de la chanson de Barbra streisand en on fait un film mythique ;Voir un reve ou un ideal ;Merci pour cette belle réalisation .
I need to watch this film
Love Love
Although is hard , the truth is just said , it was not easy for him.
I agree ☝️ there are a few movies that are so sad endings it seems I cry all the time..
It eat me alive this film.
She’s much more interesting than him.. all he has is looks. She has the personality, fire, spirit and everything! Honestly I think he wanted to have her courage but didn’t dare too. And that’s why he was with her. She was everything he secretly wanted to be but couldn’t.
Ohhh Breaking up with someone is So Unbearable,I understand about tantrums, love can make You go Crazy,Babs is a Lass with a Fire in her Belly💗
This movie is a useful warning for people entering into intercultural relationships with their eyes closed.
Какой ладненький
Еще и блондин 👍
This is a very important conversation. I am impressed with the way the dialogue flowed, the level of honesty and civil directness. I don’t know if I should or shouldn’t be impressed, but I am. I wish that Robert Redford’s character had been permitted to explain his position more fully., that he hadn’t been cut off. The dynamic is a very important one and I think warrants a fuller explanation. Maybe in other parts of the movie there is one. I have not seen this movie yet. Or maybe it’s based on a book that includes a fuller conversation,. I don’t know. But this topic and conversation is very important and I would love to see move scenes or read more books that explore this issue, this relational conflict. If anyone know of any literature or other movie scenes that are more thorough in breaking down their issue, as it is a very common one, please let me know. The issue of being attracted to someone with whom you can’t reasonably have a long term relation ship and more particularly, the conflict between a man and woman where the woman is very driven, aspirational and the man less so.The issue of a woman being attracted to a man for whom she can’t be the kind of woman he likes. She must like him the way that he is to some extant, otherwise she would not be pursing him. She pushes him to be more driven, but would she really like him anymore then? And if she acts less driven and motivated herself, she will hate herself and be even more unlikable to him. How does a woman like this find happiness and enjoyment with a man? What kind of relationship would that be? What form would it take. The easy answer is , she would find a man who is more driven, but that’s the thing. She must not really want a man that is more driven. She is attracted to this man and he is what he is. She is attracted to what she sees now, not what he could be. I think. Or maybe she really would be more attracted to him if he were more driven. I’m not sure how to make sense of this issue or to even accurately describe it, but it is very interesting and wish I could understand it better.
How does a highly intelligent and driven woman enjoy a relationship with a man that she admires without betraying herself? Is it possible? How does she pursue her intellectual goals and romantic ones without her or the man compromising on their values or their idea of what a relationship should be?( Regardless of whether you think Barbara’s character is actually intelligent or nowt that is what she is meant to represent, I think)
Any thoughts?
Honestly I did not see the whole movie. If you want a more through understanding of the male issue, watch The Bridges OF Madison County. I cried through the whole movie! It is a different twist, but the emotions projected are powerful.
Watch the movie.
I could talk to you hours and hours about these things. I've always been driven, a Renaissance womanand outlier in accomplishment. Yet, I lose who I am in relationships, taking on the expectations of others and trying to please (which is how women are socialized). You're right. A lot of good movies could be made about these dynamics. I think they're not easy enough to be done. Too bad.
Been in a similar situation myself you know you ain't going to make it 😐
❤️🥰💙
I don’t think he loved her, but he tried.
she is just too intense
It would be so exhausting to be in a relationship with Katie. Wound way too tight
Yep
It’s a movie.
But like the expression says, “If I’m a lot, go find less.” She is intense, but she isn’t too intense for everyone.
@@bethanyirene7120 true, she could be just right for someone
@@SN-sz7kw yes, and I'm analyzing a CHARACTER in the movie
'" i don't think we're gonna make it' I'm married" That 's a real man..Beware of being in love with a married man ok? but if he is single then go for it..
She was strung up way too tight.
It’s the role. Without it, there’d be no movie.
LoveLove, how do u decide which movies?
They’re all distributed by Columbia Pictures!! That’s the connection!! Too bad some great romance flicks they can’t post!!
He really tried. It was just too powerful.
ไม่ใช่สเปกผม แต่ชอบเสียงเพลง
I don’t think a lot of people understand the film. First a lot of scenes were cut off and so it makes it look weird. In the deleted scenes Katie got in trouble bc Franz told on her of her being a communist. She asked for the divorce bc It would be better. In the book it’s a little bit different. The book it shows a lot more that Hubble loved her a lot and so did she. They were just different.
She's too complicated. I had similar relationship in the past. I wanted to get rid of it but kept waiting just to waste more time. Wished I were more resolute to say enough is enough and get out.
This movie was strange to me. He never loved her or understood her. She was too needy, independent, and not White enough for him. He wanted to be rich, blond and enjoy life. He did not want to protest. He did not have anything to protest, he was the elite. Let the good times roll. Lol. I don’t understand how they stayed together as long as they did. He had an affair on her. She was so desperate for him to love her and for him to care about the things she cared about. He did not even care about his own daughter. They loved the idea of each other but not the reality of the person.
Your descriptions of race are ignorant of the facts presented in the film. Saying he never loved her completely negates the message of the film. He loved her in spite of herself. Politics and causes that supercede a relationship ilare bound to affect the marriage. He figured it out sooner than she did. She was superficially obsessed with his appearance from the start. If anyone one wasn't enough, it was he. The activist character wanted him to be a male version of herself. He wanted to earn a good living in order to provide for his family. In case you are unaware of social mores for their era, ruptured families often opted for non-disclosure to protect the children. Whether right or wrong, it was the accepted way to prevent bullying at school.
@Christina FWIW I agree with you. I never felt it with this movie. She was a screamy desperate shrew and he could barely be reeled in. I don't know whether the actors are actually friendly IRL with one another but I got a vibe that he really didn't like her much and his acting showed that. Again, I could be wrong but it seemed like he barely tolerated her.
@@Juliet_Capulet Jeez, you REALLY missed the entire essence of this film....they loved each other with an incredible passion, despite their differences. The connection was so strong it dominated everything until it just didn't....simple as that. Have you never been in love and then it just inexplicably and no matter how desperately you tried to save it, evaporated.....it is truly tragic. Watch the last scene in that movie again and tell me they didn't love each other. (and by the way they always had a lot of respect for each other in real life.....and still do!).
No I disagree I believe Robert Redford's character was attracted to her because she wasn't like all the other woman she was smart she was a genius she was different but I think their differences are what broke them up she pushed you hard she wouldn't accept who he really was and eventually that drove him to a woman who was a lot easier cuz she wasn't she was off the chain and she was too needy
Nobody cheated on a deleted scene she had been informed on by an old college boyfriend. They would have blacklisted Hubble of getting a job.She asked for the divorce. That deleted scene explained the whole thing they shouldnt have deleted it.Hubblw didnt want the divorce.
she is better of without him. divorce oke but never see his child. that is verry bad and sad. i loved the end of the movie. always nice to see a movie if they stayed together. but the realite is different. they where not happy and together it didnt work. sad but better.
She was border-line crazy.
Over acting

We have much to thank for borderline crazy women like this today! 🎆🌅🎇💕
Hilarious. She brought all this on herself.
He should of loved her. She loved him. So sad . 🥲🥲
But he LOVES HER
Nah . That ain't love .
I hate to watch her desperation.
Me too.
Haha master Captain Mensa 287 navel marine Barbara Gaga
The character debased herself in this scene. Painful to watch.
Who could be in love with an histerical woman who screams at the top of her lungs all the time? Specially a guy like Redford, who could have any woman he wants?
Did you put this here
Am I the only woman in this whole world who thought Redford played a real schmuck ??? I thought she demeaned herself and I was thrilled when he left his freakin key 🔑. Lol
I was thrilled when he left his key because I thought he finally got rid of his problem!
She went too far and he didn't go far enough.
Lots of hunks are full of themselves jerks, that's common.
she was too volatile and emotional
Hey another person who feels like I did about this movie, he was so full of himself and she came off as way too needy. She was always having to fight to keep his live and attention. The whole movie made me sad for her. I think she only wanted to be with him for his good looks. Sad relationship
They say opposites attract.
I guess they’re wrong in this case.
Opposites attract doesn't mean they stay together. "Like a moth to a flame...."
She was too curly for him. In all ways.
The appeal of this movie is that it represents every ordinary women or gay guys fantasy of having the ultimate hunk loving them for what they are inside. Yet, I have always find that this fantasy is thoroughly contradictary and unfair. Why would you ask of someone who can have anyone he likes to overlook the exterior while the exterior is so important to you?
This movie never grabbed me - they had zero actual chemistry together. She was always railing at why he didn't accept her,
then doing everything possible to make him not want to. Most of the time I'd have gladly smacked her.
Couldn't agree more. I think the key ingredient was Robert Redford and how any woman watching the film would want to be the one to be with him. It didn't matter what you had the leading lady do or who she would be and the people making the film knew it
Me too. I personally would rather have tried to understand Robert Redford! We always have problems and issues in this world that we feel that are wrong, and some of these issues never go away. But, to become so absorbed to the point you are constantly bitter and upset with people all the time is a form of mental illness. She put it on display in this movie.
I agree that for the most part they didn't have chemistry and I never bought into their great love. I still enjoy watching the movie from time to time. The title song is great, though
Clearly the guy is never crazy about her. It’s her fault for getting into a toxic relationship like this. A weird film to watch but the title song is great
I only saw this film for the first time about 3 years ago. I thought Streisand was shrill and tiresome in the extreme and they had zero chemistry. I thought so back in 1970-whatever when it first came out, which is why I had no interest in seeing it at the time. The title song, however, is memorable and I always loved it. It just grows truer as I get older. This scene of them running into each other years later is a heartbreaker. Streisand doesn't overact this one.
She is woke artist. No one wants woke trolls.
The Way We Were
is everything wrong with the Jews trying to assimilate in America.
It's not about her love affair with Hubble (which reminds us of the telescope). It's about her love affair with America, with democracy with the illusion that a truly just society is possible in America.
She's dedicated to justice in a way that WASPs can never be.
She's intense in a way that WASPs cannot be.
She loves in a way that WASPs cannot understand.
Though her skin is white, she is clearly not White - not in appearance, not in weltanschauung.
Hubble admires her, even loves her to the extent that he can - but they are two different orders of being. He knows it. She's doesn't want it to be true.
Poor WASPs - we’re so crap lol
You are really screwed up. Ask for help!!
WHAT ARE U ABOUT MATE
interesting observation!
100% and it has really surprised me that no one else has understood this dynamic. You nailed it.
She is so toxic!! Manipulate, manipulate, manipulate!
She wasn't ugly then
Stay classy Ken 😂
Neither were you.
She is SO ANNOYING.
Ah, so she loved politics more than him.
I cannot people the popularity of this film with someone like Streisand in the lead. She has zero acting abilities and is about as believable as a polka dotted zebra not to mention listening to her is like listening to nails on a chalkboard
I THINK WE'RE GOING TO MAKE IT @SNAPCHAT GIVE ME 4 YEARS BACK
