Armin Shimmerman is so good at playing a weasel that you can both hate and love at the same time. He’s so fun to watch. I don’t know if the writers had a backstory for him, or if he character suffered from some mild inconsistent writing, and I don’t really care. I love watching the character. I especially love HOW he exerts authority over the students, because he is physically smaller than a lot of them. He’s soft spoken. He smiles a lot when others are uncomfortable. Realistically speaking he would it be able to intimidate high schoolers the way that he does, but the actor still makes it all believable. Love it.
Yes! The actor is great. Putting all of his scenes together, I started to notice it more and more. He has great delivery and he's effective at seeming intimidating and looking like a doof.
Outside of being a horrible principal, Snyder was there to introduce the idea of The Mayor. But because he didn't actually know anything about the mystical beyond the basics, that's as far as it went.
Yeah, Snyder had only two primary functions; to serve as an antagonist and to introduce the Mayor but sadly he didn't get much development or a conclusion.
@@PensiveWhiskers I don't think he was meant to have a conclusion. He was just the principal, antagonist or not. Other shows wouldn't even have their principals introduce important characters. I'm currently binging _One Tree Hill,_ which had two principals. One had a 17 episode run over 5 seasons and the other had a 3 episode run in 2 seasons. Neither of which were important for any reason. They were just there.
You have no idea how eager I have been for this episode. I knew Snyder was coming eventually. Boy, am I glad it’s here! Wonderful work, as always. Interesting to know he had originally applied for the role of Flutie! I am glad each actor got the role they did. I couldn’t see their roles being reversed, personally.
Thank you! I'm happy that now there is at least one video on Snyder out there. 😄 It was fun to learn about Armin Shimerman and his experience as Snyder. There is a podcast where he talks about his audition process and how he got the role. He apparently wasn't expecting to stay on for more than a season. Podcast: www.bufferingcast.com/cast-interviews.
Definitely got to do more deep dives on minor characters... How about a deep dive on Kendra? Or Harmony? Maybe some of the bad guys who had sympathetic backstories like the mummy girl?
Your last segment hit on the issue of Snyder - he needed a definitive explanation, 1 episode backstory where we learned the truth of him. How did he get here? Why does he know some things and not others? What did he taste like? End of the day, I liked Snyder. He was a great High School level antagonist and a delightful grumpy cat.
Yes! We needed an explanation but never got one. I feel like people were all kind of waiting for a big reveal on him, but it never happened. It feels like there was supposed to be a bit more to his story.
I headcanoned my way into believing he used to worked for the Initiative or some associated branch so it was cool to hear you mention that idea 😅 With less clearance than someone like professor Walsh, of course, but aware enough as to know what's going on. I imagine if he knew Buffy was the slayer he'd probably treat her a bit more like he treats Willow. (You, Passion of the Nerd and Five by Five are my cozy Buffy corner online 😅❤)
I had the exact same thoughts! I could see him treating Buffy like he does Willow. I LOVE Passion of the Nerd and Five by Five Takes, they are both so talented. I didn't discover Five by Five Takes until late last year, what an underrated channel.
Great analysis on Snyder. I think you did a great job being sympathetic but also acknowledging the man is an ass (particularly to Buffy). I like your idea of the government angle. We know from hints here and there that many government branches have secret departments that deal with the supernatural. Wouldn't surprise me for the Mayor to have connections to pull someone in who is completely oblivious to the true dangers in the town. Makes me wonder how many towns in the Buffyverse have supernatural elements to them? Maybe not to full Hellmouth scale but enough to need intervention or for supernatural happenings to become the norm in the populace. The fun part of the Buffyverse is it has so much potential to grow as you start to dive into the small details.
Very good point about the different supernatural happenings in other towns. They did allude a few times to a Hellmouth in Ohio, that would have been fun to see. I would like to see the Ohio Hellmouth.
Just out of curiosity: how often are you accused of overthinking things ;) Snider reminds me a lot of Sabrinas principle taft. A small minded ambitios lickspittle who functions as a spoil for the protagonist.
Snyder is kind of like Principal Taft! I hated Principal Taft on Sabrina too. I definitely overthink things, but I am rarely accused as people are too polite to say it. :)
@@PensiveWhiskers the juxtaposition of having a character who sees our hero in the worst possible light, while we the audience know they are heroes is a time honored trope! I don't accuse either, I like it ;)
For me i was never a fan of snyder when i was a kid even as an adult i do believe if he knew the truth about buffy he wouldn't had been so hard on her but would help her at some points
I started to soften up a lot on Snyder after watching Passion of the Nerd. Before that, I think I couldn't let go of the fact that he was a Principal who was unreasonably mean to students. I do think he would have treated Buffy better had he known the truth.
Hey I want ask a favor can you make a video about the great Catherine and Peter how they ruined the show and how they ruined couple I’m still angry and hurt about it I really appreciate it I love you I love your videos

The way that you describe him it makes him seem like the adult version of Johnathan.
As I was writing this, I got the same sense. It wasn't intentionally but I started to feel the similarities between them.

I thought Sabrina's principal was "Mr.Kraft"? Sabrina's principal character is alsp only vice-principal
@@stuffwithsoph8264 you are right, it's kraft.m
@@stuffwithsoph8264 You are absolutely correct! I messed that up. It is Mr. Willard Kraft on Sabrina.
He was somebody for me I hated reflexivly. Anyway - great video❤
I completely despised him when I was younger. It took many many years for me to appreciate the comedic side of this character.

Hey! I haven't seen The Great, unfortunately. It does seem like a cool show. If I end up watching the show I will add it to my repertoire!
