  • I customized my Intex Mariner 4 by adding a plywood floor. It is very stable. It is constructed of 1/2" plywood with indoor/outdoor carpet for added comfort. I also added swivel seats so you can fish very comfortably.

    I just finished my second season with it. I took it out about 11 times and its still holding up. the valves are in good working order. The paddles are junk. I replaced them with a kayak paddle.

    Nice work -- I'm curious whether you think you could have gone a step thinner, using 1/4 inch and laminating the plywood with fiberglass cloth/resin on both sides, to make it wobble/bend/flex resistant and shed some weight.

    If you take an old hose and, pass it through a wire stripper (or just cut it down the center on one side) you could wrap the edges of that plywood with it. It would really protect your boat and would probobly close some of that gap, wedging in nice and tight when inflated.

    like 80+lbs all stock.

    possibl i can strap it to my jeep top? im only 3 min frm lake and i can just toss it up top and strap it down i have a luggage rack. it would save time on inflating but still a pain getting it into my back yard, i would have to remove the floor to lighten it i know its 80 lbs

    I love what you did. Looks great and practical. I'm curious though if you could have used contact cement to secure the carpet to the plywood instead of staples? I don't know how contact cement would react to the carpet but if it could be done it may be a bit safer that staples. I'd be worried a staple may eventually rust and break or wiggle loose and start to poke pin holes in the boat. but I do admire your work. really nice looking boat when you were finished.

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  8 років тому

      I tried my best to place the staples as far away from the sides as I could. there has been some loose staples but haven't had a puncture. I didn't even think of using contact cementas it would probably work just fine. the floors don't get that wet anyway when you are on the water.

    Hi Rick,
    Thank you for doing the blueprint for the rest of us. I'm about ready to make my own floor and would like some ideas from you.
    Would you recommend using the homemade wooden floors only and not put the plastic floor it comes with? Reason I ask is because it's such a drag have to put so many things together just to get it in the water so one less step would be a plus
    Second question, how do you screw the seat into the wood through carpet?
    Thanks in advance and happy boating
    Keith

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  8 років тому

      1. I would defiantly put both in. It gives the wooden floor a solid base so it doesn't sag.
      2. It does take a while (45) minutes to put together, but you don't need a trailer to haul it and most of all you don't need a lot of storage for it.

    • @ummer211

      drill 4 holes in the floor. shove 4 screws through each hole going up. use a wingnut to secure the seat.

    a quick question, I'm living outside USA and I'm interested to by this mariner 4 and take with me however, i'm allowed only 2 bags with max 50lb / bag. Do you have any idea what is the weight of the body of the boat itself? Also, the weight of floor with the plastic bars alone?

    Hey Rick, I have been checking out your videos. My husband and I just ordered this for our trip on the 1st to June Lake Loop. Would you be able to provide me with the measurements that we would need to cut the plywood floor? We want to make this during the week so it is ready when we leave on Saturday. I don't think the boat will arrive until (hopefully) Thursday or Friday. My husband is a big man 330+ @ 6'-3" and the floor will make all the difference I think for us.

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  9 років тому

      It will be tough because the floor squares off at the end. 129 inches from front to back 57 inches across. Keep in mind the front slants in a bit. You could just meaure I believe it's 120 front to back to make up for the slant.
      Good luck with the mod.

    • @barbarastull8129
      @barbarastull8129 9 років тому

      Rick Brewer I appreciate your info, what I was hoping was that you could give us the key point areas so we could basically draw our own outline on our plywood. tip width, next widest width, etc....and same for rear plus length of course then we could basically connect the dots. Maybe this won't work but I thought I would ask if you thought we could make this work. If so, I would appreciate the time it would take for you to measure those key points.

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  9 років тому +1

      All I did was take the floor sleeve it came with and trace it out onto the plywood floor. It would be impossible to do it otherwise. You would off measurement.
      My advice is to wait until it comes in the mail and do a quick construction using the floor sleeve.

    The plastic flooring that came with your mariner 4. Did you ever put it in you boat before you made you own flooring and if you did. Did you put it in the boat then blow up you boat,or blow up the boat first then put in plastic flooring?

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  9 років тому

      I used the plastic floor it came with as a template to cut the correct size. Ever time I use the boat I put that original flooring in as a frame for the modded floor. The plastic slabs it came with act as a good support for the wood floor.

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  9 років тому

      Let me answer your question. I put the floor in then blew it up. You have to or youll fall all over the place. I mostly made the wood floor so that i could insert the swivel chairs. Standing isn't really an issue without it. It just adds a lot of stability.

    is it easy to stand up with just the plasti floor that came with? its the reason why im plan to buy one if not i rather just get the intex 5 person and make my own custom wood floor.

    • @ummer211
      @ummer211  8 років тому

      It makes a world of difference with the wood floor. It's not solid with the frame but you can definitely stand in it. One main reason I put theMy
      floor in is so I could screw the swivel seat in which is very solid. I would advise you place the frame in first then but the wood floor in for extra support. let me know how your project goes.

    I have 1 concern: is there any stability between the 2 pieces when you stand or move on it? My guess is 1 piece will be higher than the other when you stand, sit, or don't have equal weigh on both sides of the floor. It could move other things on the floor, thus causing the instability.

      No the original floor is actually really good if you just want to stand in one place. The wood floor allows you to fasten a swivel chair and walk around comfortably with the added carpet. You can just leave thearly floor it comes with but the luxury you feel with the carpeted wood floor is lime no other. Just ask Desert Grunt. He brought it to the next level and added a sound system etc.
