jon bear This is Really interesting and fantastic review Thank you
You are great! So much fun and informative video! Btw I having both :) Please keep it up! you rock!
Jon, thanks for this, always a pleasure to watch, and I learned a lot. After doing teaching videos, focusing on everything *but* the camera (like lighting , background, sound, etc.), I think that it is finally time to think about the camera (in additional to me just wanting to learn more about video). I'm aiming for BMPCC4k, which I recall your reviews of. For primarily indoor, interview stuff with controlled envrionments, would you suggest one of these two lenses with a bmpcc4k setup ? Of course, I would like to get out of that setup soon, and the easy of carry wof the panny looks very temping!
best video i found on UA-cam! all questions answered, dankeschön from germany✌🏼
That's great! Glad to have been helpful!
This was a great video you earned a subscribe my friend 💪🏾💪🏾
That's amazing!! Hope I can keep delivering awesome stuff for you. Feel free to ask me anything!

Thank you Diego!!
Thank you for the great video! very funny and super informative! gonna make my purchase now and subscribed!
Super! Glad to hear it 🎉🎉 thank you so much 🙏
What a contagiously positive aura you have... You transport your love for photography directly into the hearts and impart valuable knowledge about the two lenses and that in the shortest of time, wow. You should give seminars at media colleges, perfect combination of emotional psychology, aesthetics, editing, ...etc.
Wow thank you so much for this poetically beautiful comment! It means a lot to me. I will do my best to keep my standards high for all my future videos. I actually have done a ton of public speaking including stand up comedy. I also taught English at private schools for over 3 years. I love being on stage :D Hope I can make more videos that you like! If there is any camera topic you'd like me to make a video on, go ahead and drop some ideas! I will work hard to upload a video a week :D
@@JonBear yest i noticed that too. you has a strong charisma in speech and body language

Great review thanks!
Amazingly easy to watch and amazingly useful review. Good job. Thank you

What a great comment. Thank you so much! I won't let you down
Such a great comparison vid! Thanks Jon!
Thank you Dionne! I'm so happy you enjoyed
Thank you so much for the review! I recently bought an 18-35mm sigma lens with my viltrox adapter for my GH5. it seems as though that auto focus doesn’t seem to work at all even when I am halfway pressing my shutter button. Is this normal? Will I have to use manual focus the entire time with this lens? Just wanted to make sure I didn’t receive a broken lens. Thank you so much for your help!
Thank you for the comment! As for the lens, is the switch on the lens set to AF?
What I do is I keep the lens on AF then I keep the camera body on MF. Then when I want to refocus I push the AF/AE lock button which works similar to" tap to focus'
This focusing method is fast and responsive. I do this because when you use the Sigma with AF on the camera body, it's slow and noisy. But it works. Try this. Cheers!
Awesome video! Thanks!!
Love your energy bro! Great video
Super appreciate it Sam!
Great video sir. You presented it really well. Thanks for sharing.
Super happy to hear that! Appreciate it Ramil!
Just ordered a Panny. :D Thanks for such a great video.
Bro' you explain this really well and u're fun to watch. u got it right I was looking for Bokeh more than anything else so thanks to u I'm going with the Sigma. Subbed and liked few clips thank you for ur work 🙌🏻
Thank you! Great choice!
@@JonBear Can please make a video on Vertical Clips for Ig Reels. Best Materiel to get, angles, setting… etc
Loved the video! I've never tried the panny boy but I rented the sigma for a day to try it out and I was in love with the 1.2 aperture constant throughout the zoom range, not only was the bokeh beautiful but I could almost see in the dark whereas my 60mm 2.8 lens struggles in low light because of the 2.8. I own the G9 and it controls noise well but sometimes I think it's best to get the faster lenses just for the brighter image as there is a hugeee difference between the 1.2 and the 2.8. I'd love to try the 12-35 panny sometime tho and see if it can change my mind
I 1000% percent agree with your comment. The fast aperture is a game changer. You can see in the dark almost to the extent that the human eye does. The jump between 2.8 and 1.2 is massive.
To be fair though, 1.2 is going to give you a very fine focus line so keeping your subject in focus is gonna be a challenge. Because of this I generally stick with 1.8 for a good balance :)
It the best out there..couldn't find this review anywhere...you are amazing
Thank you my friend I super appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed
I really enjoyed this man!
Thank you brother. I appreciate you taking the time to comment too!
I got GH5 recently and planning get Sigma. What other lens do you recommend from ef mount for wide and Tele?
Great choice! For the ef adapter, a popular wide lens is the Tokina 12-16mm amzn.to/2yNoU1h
For a Tele lens, people tend to go for Sigma 50-100 to compliment the 18-35 : amzn.to/2YSqmtW
Awesome comparison! I've been thinking of getting the 12-35 for my GH5, but I have used the 18-35 through a friend enough times (mostly on EF mount cameras however) that I was wondering if it was worth it to buy only one of them or both considering they are similar zoom lengths. Defiantly getting the 12-35, and will still grab the 18-35 at some point for other cameras.
Nice! Definitely the 18-35 is nice to keep around since you can adapt it to many cameras
Hello John. Thanks for the video! My question is, can you get more light into the panny with a speed booster of some kind and get better low light / bokeh performance? Cheers.
Hey Vince! Appreciate the question. Unfortunately, speedboosters act as adapters for bigger glass to smaller sensors.
So in short, there is no speedbooster for a native m43 lens to a m43 body. Only lenses designed for larger sensors can utilize speedboosters. The most common is Canon EF- to m43. But you can also find Nikon to m43, and maybe other niche lens mounts.
So you cannot make your panny faster unfortunately.
Jon Bear Thanks for clearing that up. I’m still learning about all this stuff 👍🏼
very entertaining man, thanks for the information.
My man! Thank you so much for the watch and comment
@@JonBear am a music I just purchased the gh5s for music videos and with your help the I got the right lens
Hi Jon, thanks for comparing both the lenses. I got myself a GH5 recently. Lens choice can be difficult for this camera. I purchased a Sigma 18-35 but the setup is too heavy & noticeable in public. I might consider a 12-35mm panny as well. I have been using my sigma with a mechanical adapter only (without a speed booster). But, I'm not sure what focal range I have been getting with a non-speed booster lens. Also, is there a conversion on F-stop values as well on a MFT sensor? or they effective as displayed? thanks.
You may try panaleica 12-60 or olympus 12-40 for run and gun or street photography or videography
Great review! quick question, do you need to calibrate front/back focus or update the firmware of the sigma lens with this combo? Or it is only required if using canon bodies? Thanks!
Great question! I actually bought the lens with the USB dock just in case but I found it to be perfectly calibrated. I bought it from B&H and they sent me a new lens fully upgraded as well.
So it would depend on where you buy it and if it's used or new
@@JonBear Thanks for the info, I actually found one bundle with the dock in Amazon amzn.to/3aKWnYF I already owned GH5 with Panasonic 12-60mm lens it works perfect but just like you said in 5:04 BOKEH! you made me think to get one lol. I do have Metabones speed booster ultra 0.71x from B&H I used it for my canon 50mm F1.8 good bokeh but i need wide angle too. Thanks again Jon!
@@Clickbytes Fantastic! Looks great. Since you already have a metabones then yeah, Sigma 18-35 makes sense to get. Super versatile and affordable even when new. I never find myself needing a wider lens. Only situation I imagine you need to go wider is if you shoot real-estate and you need the rooms to seem larger
Greetings from Japan and here's a question. What about 15mm F1.7 Summix one? I think it's the only native lens that can stand a chance against that badass sigma girl while maintaining both the bokeh and the wide angle? To tell you the truth I bought the 12mm - 35mm one myself back in the day I got my G9, and now I kinda became desperate wanting more shallow depth of field in my works. So tell me Jon, sigma or summix, which should I go for?
Exactly the video I was looking for. I snagged an amazing deal on my GH5 with both the 12-35 and 35-100, both the latest versions with dual IS and weather sealing. But I see that sigma metabones combo for sale sometimes and just wonder about it.. but then again I also have the Leica 15 F1.7 and the Voigtlander 17.5 F.95 so I think for now I'll just swap to a prime when I need more bokeh and zoom with my feet.
Awesome Steve! Yes you are set, no need to consider the sigma. Swapping to primes when you need low light or bokeh is a great tactic
hehe, came here by searchterm (Sigma Art 18-35mm vs Panasonic 12-35) and found to nice influences in your channel: a bit of Jim Carey in your facial expressions and a lot of PM in your intro roll :)
My question: should I even bother getting an speedbooster to use my older Nikon F lenses on my GH5 (and I already have quite a lot of lenses on MFT).
greets from Austria
ahaha I hear the Jim Carrey thing occasionally. Always puts a smile on my face! Huge fan of Peter McKinnon too. I admire how he makes videography look fun, welcoming, and effortless to beginners.
To answer your question, If I was you I'd get a non-speedbooster adapter. They're only about $30 and that's a cheap price to pay if you have tons of old lenses you want to breathe new life into. Then if you find a lens that you like a lot, you could try picking up a speedbooster for the faster aperture
@@JonBear thanks for your reply. Peter is quite a character - that's for sure!
I spent a lot of time thinking about getting a used Sony A7RII with some decent lenses (full format - yay!). Tried it, like the shallow world it captures...
then I realized how much money I already invested into MFT lenses ;)
I also came to realize that the older Nikon lenses we have (along the old nikons itself) are not of much use anymore. Better to spend the money into a new MFT lens maybe.
Meanwhile for my youtubing I got the Sony ZV-1 - it's amazing how nice the AF works, it's so convenient (24-70, F1.-8 to F2.8) - even has an integrated ND filter...
you prolly saw a review or two ;)
thanks again and good luck - with your sympathic videos and a few years of really hard work you're destined to "de-throne" PM :)
(at least you should have 100times the subbers you have now!).
greets, Mario
Thank you for the warm message Mario!
The full format cameras definitely are enticing. But for now the price is off putting and I can already record in 4k resolution in 10 bit. All that said it's a lot of money to switch to a format that may give me slightly more blurry backgrounds. (and my backgrounds are blurry enough 😘)
The ZV-1 is definitely a handy camera that is perfect for UA-cam. Would love to try it one day.
Love and greetings from Iceland! Have a good 2021!
amazing, thanks man!
I just purchased a viltrox ef m2 for 100e which is a good deal,
but now i'm actually going to resell it and go for the lumix, darn I wish I saw this awesome video before, You're also really cool to watch! Very charismatic.
Thank you! I actually lately personally use the panasonic 12-35 more. I got enough lenses that get good bokeh. The lumix is simply the best in every other category. It even autofocuses fast!
Great video on a lens we've all either owned or have tried!
It really is!
I have the gh5s I need to start filming my short films which one should I go with ? help please
Nice video, have you tried the tokina 11-20 f2.8 + speedbooster ?
Thank you! I haven't tried it yet! I don't think I'd use a wide that much, but definitely it's on my shopping list as a "nice to have" (rather than must have). I know it's a popular option for people using speedboosters on GH5
You sold me on the Sigma already have the Panny though... Great Video👍
I was thinking about getting a Panasonic GH5s (I will do more video than photography). Should I get a GH5 instead, because of the image stabilization?
I know the GH5s does better in low light, but some other videos suggested that if I use a speed booster and sigma lens, I can offset that deficit in the GH5...?
Also, what will getting the optional v-log for GH5 gain me?
I think initially, I will be going out into the field to shoot videos to promote tourism, videoing myself for online content, shoot some event video, etc.
In your opinion, should I get the GH5 or the GH5s, or Should I wait until the GH6 is released, so I can see if the GH6 has better features/specs for the price?
Any idea when the GH6 will be released, and what the price and specs on it will be?
Good question! Personally I really value image stabilization. But having good low light ability is really important for event videos because you cannot run around and set up lights everywhere.
The GH5s has some clear advantages at the cost of stabilization: 1. Incredible low light capability, 2. Comes with V-log. If you're out and about doing tourism stuff, then yeah stabilization really helps but if you bring a tripod and focus on your composition more, I think the end result will be better for it.
Stabilization is good, but a good tripod shot always wins. And if you really need moving shots, then you can invest in a gimbal later on.
As for GH6, there are only baseless rumors. Maybe it will never come out.
HI thanks for the fun and informative video, I can't forget about the boke, but I am hesitating between the speed booster , some guys don't like the VILTROX EF-M2 , and say always buy the metabones equivalent, please let me know you opinion about these two or at least your experiencience with the VILTROX EF-M2
Thank you! I did a lot of research and I concluded that Metabones and Viltrox are very very similar. Metabones is slightly less blurry in the CORNERS but only slightly and you won't ever frame a subject there anyway. I guess the people who say Viltrox is bad are just salty they paid 600 bucks for a speedbooster that you can get for around 150 bucks.
I've used Viltrox Sigma combo as my main lens for a year now and I never had issues. It sits on my camera 90% of the time. Hope this helps!
Love your channel - So informative and fun! Just ordered a G9 and looking forward to putting the Sigma on that bad boy.
Absolutely epic! I checked your channel and saw the "Your Mind" video. It's stunning work. I hit that sub and bell in a heartbeat. Looking forward to seeing your work with the G9!
@@JonBear Wow deeply appreciate it this Jon! I didn't film it so can't take the credit but I did direct the video :) I have a question if you don't mind - I will be using the lens to do guitar tuitional stuff and few people said there is issues with even one punch auto focus when not using native lenses. That got me thinking whether i should go for a native like a Sigma 16mm 1.4..Whats your take on it?
@@GeorgeMariosofficial Good question. Sigma 18-35 is definitely more versatile.
It works with Autofocus but it is LOUD. A camera mounted mic will pick up that noise. But if you record audio from a boomstand then it won't be picked up.
That said, the sigma prime lenses for M43 cameras like the Sigma 16mm f1.4 are phenomenal. Fast, light and reliable. Since it is native the Autofocus will also be reliable.. And if you get only the sigma 16mm f1.4 then you'll save some money since it's cheaper and doesn't require an adapter.
If the zoom is not important to you, then get the 16mm f1.4. It probably serves your purposes better and it will probably become your go-to gimbal lens if you decide to expand.
Hope these thoughts help!
@@JonBear Thank you for the insights! That is definitely a good idea - With regards to autofocus (sorry if it is a stupid question)...I have a canon rebel t2i at the moment and once you set the focus (I have a remote control) the lens stays still. Is it possible to do this with the G9 and the sigma 18-35? Meaning if I focus on me through the app let's say - can i then "freeze" that focus so it doesn't keep changing?(hope it makes sense) Thank you again Jon!
@@GeorgeMariosofficial Yes you can do this!
Use the Panasonic Lumix Imaging app on your phone. Set camera to manual focus, then set the focus in your phone. The focus won't change.
Thanks for the great video! Makes the decision harder lol. I almost wonder if another good option would be to get the panny and use the money you save to get the Panasonic 25mm? That would give you a good low light prime and offer a great bokeh.
Yes that is a good consideration too.
If you're looking at 25mm Prime lenses, then I made this video yesterday for the Speedmaster T1.0 ua-cam.com/video/daEm_Zz6eSY/v-deo.html
I own the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 too and while it's a good lens, it's focusing is flybywire and autofocus on it is really awful. It was one of my first lenses and I have not really used it at all since I got my sigma/viltrox combo
Thanks for the review. I am always trying to convince myself I don’t need the 12-35 Panasonic, but I fail. I fail.
It's just so dang versatile! For travel I and light package it's the best. My friend has the olympus 12-40 which is another great consideration. You don't get the dual stabilization but that extra 5mm definitely helps.
Hey, the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 sounds great but too pricey for my student budget. How about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6, or Panasonic Lumix G 45-150mm F4-5.6 OIS Lens? I'm looking for a budget option to film interviews in the 4k dimension. Secondhand Lumix Gh5 is cheap on the market now so I aim to take it.
Hey, i have a question. I have a GH5 and an Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster. I was about to buy a Sigma Art f1.8 18-35mm but it has an EF-S mount. Would it fit to the EF-M2?
Yes! I believe EF and EF-S is the same thing (EF-M is not the same thing)
So yes, the EF-s version is the one that will work with the viltrox :)
As someone who passes on grabbing the Sigma 18-35mm too often because of it's bulk, this review was eye-opening. The main issue is the clinical Panasonic look captured on the GH5 & BMPCC 4K. Footage looked much better on my BMPCC OG.
Maybe try a promist filter on the Panny? To be honest since I made this video I've gone back to the Panny as my main lens
Hey Jon, Late to the party here. I have a Panny 12-35mm. I want to get it with better use in low light and rather than buying a new lens I was considering just adding a speedbooter to the Panny in order to get the extra stops, the Viltrox is only €180 so it works for me financially. The only issue is that I dont really see people putting a speedbooster on native lenses.
What's your take? Thanks in advance1!
I have owned the panny for years and it’s my Outdoor Lens and my Travel lens but I now have Primes for my ‘Photoshoots’ (pan/leica 15mm and 25mm). I have a Samyang 12mm f2.0 for my Gimbal and the Laowa 7.5 for Interiors and a Nocticron 42.5 (just because it’s amazing and it’s also really hard to justify). . . And yet (despite all that glass) I have just ordered the Sigma and Viltrox purely for the low light capabilities and the f1.3 aperture which is Wider than all the rest (except the Nocticron).
Ps I also have the Panny 35-100 and the 100-300 and cannot remember the last time I used either 🤷
Epic! Yes the fast aperture is a game-changer. Despite the weight and all the other downsides I talked about - it's a workhorse that stays on my camera 90% of the time. Very sharp very fast very good. Hope you are satisfied with your purchase!
I've got both too lol. It was pricy for both with the metabones speedbooster but they're both reliable work horses in their own way. I use the Lumix for more run-n-gun and travel stuff and the Sigma for narrative work. Usually pair the Sigma with my BMPCC 4k and the Lumix with my G85 usually
Very nice! I am using a BMPCC4K now as well and I find myself using the same setup a lot!
Hey Thanks a lot for this vidéo
I’m a new subscriber from Benin Républic.
Tell me please. I have a Gh5 + lumix 14-140 lens. But not satisfied yet. I’m planning to buy either a SPEEDBOOSTER VILTROX + SIGMA 18-35mm or LUMIX 12-35.
Tell me please what is the bether in terme of sharpness ?
If sharpness is your goal, then the 12-35 is the winner. Normally the Sigma is known for being super sharp, but the added speedbooster limits it a bit.
@@JonBear Thanks a lot
Thanks for the video! I got question - does the lumix 12/35 have a linear focus ring? Interested in shooting video with follow focus.
unfortunately it is fly by wire
@@JonBear thanks for quick answer!
and very nice video as well! Dont know if I'm also dumb enough to buy the Sigma when I already have the panny ;) great info!
ahaha yess. Panny is better for travel 1000%(I still use it for road trips) but if you don't mind the added bulk then I personally prefer the image from the Sigma
Mr Jon Bear, you may look like a very smart robot in this video, but I love the way you present it. Great job.
why dual I S is not working with 12-35? I mean i dont have the sign for dual I.s i can only activate the IS of the lens and the stabilisation of the body in the menu is gray and i cant set it? What i have done wrong ?
Do you have a GH5 or GH5S?
GH5S does not have ibis unfortunately. But it has crazy good ISO
Nice dood! Good video :) informative and fun! I just picked up a MKi for under 500. Will throw the rest of the money I saved into sound and light!
Smart move Erik!!😀 Good light and Sound are so important. Even a $10k camera, if light and sound is bad, the video will be bad 😬
Um having a problem, this lumix lense is creating a artificial noise on my footage in gh5 and in my gh6 too, and when i put some other lenses there is no artificial noise
your style is great. absolutely stunning presentation 💐
Thank you!
I tried the sigma with viltrox, 12-35mm and then the Leica 12-60mm. For me it was 12-60mm all the way. Blazing autofocus. Viltrox simply made taking a video 3x cumbersome.
Isn't the Sigma an apsc lens? So the crop factor to m4t is 1.5 instead of 2? So the Sigmas view is 19.17mm instead of 25.56mm?
Hello mate I got the gh5 and I had a 12-60 mm lens
HES12060 and the lens broke me at the base.
Which two lenses would recommend for photos and video . I'm unprofessional.
Thanks for an answer.
What do you use your GH5 for? If you want something lighter and more reliable with autofocus go with Panasonic 12-35 lens
It may be a dumb idea
i have both these lenses
But 1 miss my old Olympus 12-60mm lens
May keep the 18-35mm and put it on the panisonic s5
Yeah absolutely! Sigma made an adapter and I heard it works pretty well.
The sigma will only work in ASPC mode on the S5 (I think).
Hi man, I'm french and I loved your video! Very fun and Informative! I already have the panny, very efficient ans very sharp, but I'm looking for something more CINEMATIC like you said 🤣
Then you cannot go wrong with the Sigma! I still use it everyday in client work www.jonbear.com
@@JonBear I'll get it soon 😁 thanks!
Great video!
Cheers brother 🥂
Great information brother 🎷
Super happy to hear that! Thanks for the comment 🙏
Excellent video Jon! I already have the Panny, do you think that getting the sigma is going to make a real difference in the cinematic look? Worth the investment?
Thank you Hector! There is really no clear answer. Just preferences. I have gone back to using the Panny a lot more over the time since this video released. It's so sharp and nice and I find the Bokeh to be sufficient - and the Autofocus works great on GH5.
With the Sigma you get that fast fast aperture on a zoom lens. There is a reason this lens is the go-to even for people on cine-cameras.
If you want more bokeh in general, then Sigma has you covered on the main focal lengths you'd ever need for filming people, The tap to focus function works great on Sigma with GH5, but don't expect to use the continuous AF - as it's noisy and unreliable.
@@JonBear got it, thanks a lot!!
@@JonBear Thank you for the video definitely made it easier to decide. I got one question that’s a little off topic. What’s the best 50mm lens for cinematic b-roll for the gh5s ? What would you recommend sir?
Good comparison. You earned a like.
The chosen one! Thank you so much! Comments like this make my day
To be clear is it that 12-35mm f2.8ii?? With the 2 ii?
I use the first version (not ii)
Awesome video bro! Crack me up.. more Bokeh lol
That buttery bokehyy is just mmmmmph delicious
I make short films..So I use 24fps for 99% of time.. So I need a camera which will give me the best image quality at 24fps..According to my budget I was thinking of buying the GH5 but recently i had come across GH4 which can also shoot 4k at 24 fps only at 8bit compared to that 10bit on GH5..Honestly after the UA-cam compression 8Bit and 10Bit are barely noticeable.. And i also dont need IBIS as my Stedicam and Gimbal does the job.. So i was thinking strongly of buying GH4 instead of GH5 as i would spent 2 times less..Can u tell me anyother features that GH5 can do better than GH4 at 24fps(excluding IBIS, 10bit)? And should you reccomend me to buy GH4 instead of GH5 as both of them are almost same at 24fps?
Thank You
Based on everything you said, I agree. Go with the GH4. For your scenario, the GH5 and GH4 will be identical (minus the 10bit). The only thing I imagine you could need is a dual ISO so you can shoot at higher iso without noise.
If that sounds enticing, then I'd strongly recommend a Blackmagic 4k or GH5S.
But I guess the better answer is to get the GH4, then invest the extra cash in lights 👍Appreciatee the question and good luck!!
This review is telling me to get the Panny, and just get maybe a prime lens like the Nocticron if bokeh's my goal. Great acting skills by the way. :))
hi, nice video man! but does the sigma make a lot of autofocus noises?
Thanks man! Yes Sigma makes noises don't get it if you plan on using autofocus
@@JonBear Ok thanks👍
what is the model of the speed booster to use the 18-35 ? thanks
Viltrox! Link in description :)
@@JonBear thnak u homes

That's great! I am super happy to hear that. Thank you!
Have you tried the sigma without the speed booster using just an adaptor ?
Actually I haven't! I never even considered this! Any one that you can recommend? I'll order one and test it out asap
Jon Bear yes Viltrox make one it’s the EFM 1 just over £100 .
It would be a similar range as the Panasonic 12-35 with a 2 stop advantage
I think that should be just over one stop advantage
@@ANNIESI1 very nice! Maybe I will make a video comparing the two adapters!
@@JonBear Yes please! I had the same question. I would actually prefer the focal range without a speedbooster but I'm not sure if the Toneh will be good enough to justify the disadvantages of an adapted lens.
This was great. You remind me of 90s cartoon characters
That's a fantastic compliment I'll take it!
I subbed. 👍
I have the Oly 12-40 f2.8 and its great but I like your last point, its just a little bit boring and while 2.8 is fine, its 5.6 on full frame which really isnt much if you think like that.
Got myself a 30mm 1.4 sigma which is MFT and now getting the hang of 1.4, the 18-35 really came to my mind. It has the big downsides like af, size and weight. But the image just looks great. Really tough desicion to make, I might get the sigma+(viltrox or metabones) used and just try if it fits for me.
Good video !
Thank you so much Admiche!
Your funny ... great content 😎
I truly appreciate that ❤️
Does both work with gh4 as well???
100% yes :D! Thanks for commenting :)
Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 is slept on vs the 18-35 1.8. Much closer comparison to the 12-35! And if you have both a speedbooster AND a regular adapter, you get an even longer f/2.8 focal length on top.
sigma makes a noise when using autofocus. It seemed to me that it was defective. I seek opinion. Has it happened to you (GH5+Viltrox+Sigma)?
If you want bokeh too, then buy a cheap 25mm f1.7 in addition to the 12-35, instead of going for that huge piece of metal. But the manual focus can be much better on the Sigma I think.
Fantastic suggestion! I got this one actually! It's a great lens. Truly compact and wonderful. I however enjoy the wider focal length of Sigma when zoomed out.
what about the advantage for low light with the sigma. Good review bro
Yes you are right. The sigma is amazing for low light. The other day I was shooting a music video in a warehouse. The director wanted it dimly lit. I was totally saved by the sigma.
@@JonBear when you shoot music videos does the director tell you what he wants and you do it? Or do you have a bit of input with the artistic flow? What kind of things did you shoot starting out?
Отличный видос! Спасибо!
Thank you for the wonderful comment!
Dude, love this video but now I am more undecided than ever
Ey Matteo! Did you make a decision? If I could only pick one I'd go with the Sigma. But if vlogging and autofocus is important to you, then the lighter panasonic 12-35 is your best bet
@@JonBear I travel a lot and make travel videos, so the lumix would be more practical. I got the sigma anyway, you got me at “WE WANT CINEMATIC”
Ahhhhh - don't be doing this to me!! Have the sigma and love it, but all the things you mentioned about the pany make me want that too. Another downside to the Sigma is the vignetting at 18 for me, but I just love the quality of the images I can get out of it. Thanks for a great video man!
Ahaha nah brother I think you're good with just the Sigma. I think either one should be good. If you really like the Panny, then maybe you might consider going for the Panny 35-100mm f2.8 - That would be a focal range that would have you covered for for all your cinematic telephoto needs. The winning points of the Panny 12-35 also apply to the 35-100 :)
As for the Sigma, are you using the lens hood? I got vignetting too, but realized it was the lens hood that was the culprit so I quickly got rid of it. The monkey at 06:22 also damaged it quite a bit lol
I get vignetting too, using the Speedbooster XL passed down from the GH4 days... Putting stabilization on with e-stabilization helps a lot, if you're handheld at 18mm. Wish I had the Ultra 0.71x... looking at getting a Viltrox version
I love the Sigmabones but another win for the Panny is it fits easier on *most* gimbals.
A great comparison. #TeamPanny 👍
Thank you so much! Yes I admit after making this video, I have used the Panny more. It's simply a great run-n-gun lens and the extra zoom comes in handy. I still like the image from the sigma more but I will only use it in controlled productions from now. For travel, the panny wins.
i have both and using it with em5ii and gx85 (commlite adaptor with no speedboost)
1235 is great for traveling, walk around in long time
and 1835, yeah, its strongest point is lowlight shooting, hehe
Great comment! Yeah absolutely agree. When I'm outside with enough light, I really love the 12-35. And Honestly, most hollywood movies don't shoot more open than 2.8 anyway so if it's fast enough for hollywood it's fast enough for you.
If you can afford both, they have their uses. Traveling with the 12-35 is so easy, and with a couple of small Olympus primes, you'll have low light capabilities as well. The Sigma, on the other hand, is better suited for dedicated jobs in low light or where you want the most shallow depth of field you can get. Even the Olympus f1.2 Pro primes don't quite give the same shallow DoF as the Sigma with a Speedbooster XL. I've carried both lenses on jobs, and also use the 18-35 for very low light plus the Sigma 24-105 for when I want more reach in better light.
Agreed, even now years after getting the sigma, I struggle to find a lens that rivals it in sharpness and depth of field. The ones that have similar bokeh or more, usually sacrifice a ton of sharpness. I kinda decided that Sigma is my one and done lens. I don't need to buy anything else for my purposes
When using the GH5 and the Sigma 18-35mm.......any tips for making handheld shots more stable?
Thanks for the question Matt!! Actually one benefit of 18-35 is that it's heavier. The heavier your setup the more stable it becomes because of the momentum conservation principle.
For anything where I am standing still, I use IS video LOCK - find it in your stabilization menu. This turns you into a tripod! It's insane.
If you are making movements, I suggest just using IBIS, and holding the camera tight while doing ninja steps. While doing this, I will film in 30fps or 60fps then slow it down to 24fps in post to get a little smoother footage. I grip the camera close to my body while taking ninja steps. Make sure you also zoom completely out to 18mm. The wider you are, the more 'stable' you will seem - and applying warp stabilizer in post will be much easier! Good luck Matt!
Put your gh5 on a smallrig cage with two side handle grip, or use the gh5 rope (i don't know the word in english for "sangle" in french)..
Yes this is good advice!! Smallrig is good. you mean the strap right?
@@JonBear yep. The strap tight
@@JonBear to keep horizon stable the side handle grips on smallrig cage is my favorite way to go on the top a top handle grip for groundclose shots..
thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed!
I am going to get the olympus 12-40. Its a solid all around lens eventually will get the sigma for paid projects and things of that nature. The sigma just so big and heavy lol but some of the images in this video from the panasonic looked amazing... same as the sigma ... that bokeh though
The Olympus is solid! Killer lens. Sigma is great for paid gigs like you said 🙌
@@JonBear ya I think the olympus can do paid work but I didnt want to get so caught up in the bokeh aspect of it. great video even your panasonic shots looked really good
Good bro!
Thank you so much brother!!
Ummm...I was dumb enough to buy booth. Why? I wanted the panny as a native lens w/ weather sealing. And the Sigma as an art lens w/low light capability (f1.1 w/a Metabones).
I also use the Sigma w/an active adapter (minus the glass element focal reducer) for further reach, extending it to 70mm on my GH5 and G7. Both lens work for me.
Nice one! Yeah they both have specific uses. I made the video because a lot of people contemplate getting either one or the other.
@@JonBear Great vid. Thanks bro!
Doesn't NEED a speedometer, just an adapter mount so you don't get the 0.71 multiplier. You can get ef to mft adapters that have internal nd filters, or have tilt & Shift functions, built in macro tubes if ypu need to do macro shots, etc
I haven't heard of the ND built in adapters! I'll have to give it a go
@@JonBear I think it's made by Fotodiox
you are very funny! thats good:))
Thank you for your wonderful comment !!
0:24 rig??
Blackmagic 4K pocket with Olympus 12-40 lens, Smallrig cage, samsung 1tb SSD (attatched with smallrig attatchment) and wooden handle attatched with smallrig too :) Great camera! My newest videos are about it
Panny im just getting started sooo yea.
I still use the panny so so much. My latest travel videos in Vietnam are all panny baby!
Thanks for the review, I think the Panasonic is a winner as you said if you are doing shoot and gun .
Actually yes. I recently started playing with it again and realized how awesome it is. Bokeh is nice, but recently I overdid it a lot in my talking videos and it was just distracting to me. f2.8 doesn't bother me anymore. Also if you're on the GH5 - there is a neat trick to fix the autofocus by putting shutterspeed to 179 degrees and use AFC single point. Paired with this lens, it works surprisingly well.
So that's another point for Panasonic - autofocus.
@@JonBear Thanks Jon I will get a GH5II to pair it with this lens. I need stab and I dont need bokeh this lens Is really perfect for me
@@tomariko There you go! Perfect!
the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 is my most used lens on my BPCC 4K + it's so much lighter!
It's a fantastic choice! And with Blackmagic you're not too concerned about low light. Nice! Thinking about picking up a Blackmagic myself
What about the autofocus, Any problems?
@@KEVIN_GABOR i dont have a chance to test the autofocus because bmpcc4k is a manual camera
