thank you Matt. couldn't have said it better. the current sets of bands playing now are no longer individual. but I guess that's what happens when everyone expects a trophies or ribbon just for showing up rather than trying to get 1st place.
I think this is a factor that contributes to people no really giving metal attention. You have the torch bearers, A7x, Slipknot, BFMV, Disturbed, bands that get the most public love but bashed on by "real" metal heads. Then you have the other sub genres, ones that contain lots of screaming, way heavier elements, more technical elements, etc. To the untrained ear all those bands sound the exact same. Scream, sing for a bit, scream, play some technical piece, done. There needs to be an air of familiarity to the new bands that will get peoples attention to the widespread public, not some specific scene. People like bands like the ones mentioned above because they sing, play melodies, memorable riffs, memorable solos, etc. Being a little simpler never hurt anyone. People are afraid to start metal bands, because today the fans interpret good metal music as abolishing the verse chorus structure, melodic singing, elements like that. They want "teeth" and "grit" and "darkness". That doesn't always equal soul. People question why metal gets no love, and the reason is that metal shows no love, to the mainstream bands at least.
defenitley agree with him at a 100% he is right about the "Pop" music"...and its funny for a guy in my generation to say this but my generation of "new age" is just horrible when it comes to Music they feel as if its the only option that they have and i would go furthermore into the topic but its simply just said to a very simplistic matter by Matt Heafy And Corey Taylor.
I 100% agree with Matt on the subject. As much as I would like to start a metal band, I have yet to learn an instrument of metal. A lot of the reasons growing up were due to money issues, but then I got caught up in so many other things. I have so many ideas for metal, but I don't know how to communicate them not knowing the instruments.
I've said it before, heavy metal is on life-support in the USA. Metal thrives in the rest of the world, but it's barely hanging on in the U.S. The last wave of American Metal was from 2002 to 2006. Shifting demographics are one reason, i.e. the browning of America, [I'm black btw] along with kids showing a lack of interest regarding musical instruments. Kids use digital recordings because they've grown up on it. When I was a teenager, kids still played instruments. There is also a severe lack of talent these days. Bands focus more on image than music, and that's a problem. The old school bands are still kickin butt though.
You think the scene in America is bad? Clearly you've never been to Australia. We have Parkway Drive and... more Parkway Drive. One of the few (if not the only) metal music festivals here called Soundwave actually shut down a while ago, and listening to or playing metal is generally frowned upon everywhere I've been.
Minorities usually come from low income families, they can't afford an expensive electric guitar or drum set like the middle class suburban white children. I think the communities financial situation has some correlation to the music genres they professionally pursue.
@@VICE-H3RO That's a stereotype. Not all minorities are low income, although that can influence one's purchasing power. A person doesn't have to purchase an expensive electric guitar to play metal.
He's saying the right things, there isn't really a new wave of metal bands coming through at this moment in time like when A7X, BFMV and Trivium broke through in the early parts of the last decade, and don't say they're Metalcore cause that word is overused and isn't even a real genre, but the reason bands copy cat of bands like Metallica and Maiden is cause that is heavy metal to a lot of people, any different or over complicated isn't, and for bands to be considered heavy metal, they need to sound similar to Maiden and Metallica, to point out, that isn't my personal view, but bands like A7X, BFMV and Trivium are different yes, but they are heavy metal bands, like it or not, and the reason heavy metal isn't progressing is cause people aren't accepting the fact that these bands are playing harder and heavier than the classics and practically bettering the work from those bands, people are so intent on causing stupid pointless arguments instead of supporting the genre, thats how pop and those other shitty dancy genre's have managed to leap frog heavy metal, and it needs to change, the support the genre for fuck sake
Well said, too much of this pathetic "My favourite band are awesome your favourite band are dog-shit" arguments flying around, the nerdy version being "Your band plays like dummies my band are the most technical because they do xyz" leave that crap behind, it's beneath the metalheads of yesteryear & should be beneath the metalheads of today. I like that Matt was calling for more kids to get playing metal & writing metal songs, fresh-blood has always been a strong force in metal & it needs that up-and-coming element, not only to keep the genre alive but to keep those old fuckers who are big now on their damn toes & stop them growing complacent.
How the fuck is metalcore not a real genre?! The fucking genre has been around since before you were born so who the fuck are you to say it doesn't exist? It's hardcore with metal influence and it was a proud hardcore sub-genre until bandwagoners started passing it off as a metal sub-genre only because a lot of shitty modern core bands rip off shitty melodic and tech death riffs. Since you called those shit bands metal (especially BMTH!), your argument is automatically invalid. Metal isn't progressing as much (it still is) because a lot of plebs like you don't support actual metal bands trying to make it out there. Instead, you all support watered down poseur shit bands like Trivium, lame of god, and a7x.
***** Hah! The poor pleb is mad. You're a moron because I wasn't really bashing his music taste, but rather calling him out as a moron for saying metalcore isn't a real genre (which it is), so he is more than wrong. True, you can like whatever you want (I wouldn't stop anyone from eating shit just like I won't stop people from listening to their shitty music). but objectively a lot of music is shit just like you plebs always call out justin bieber, lil wayne, and one direction even though a lot of music you listen to is nearly the same as those guys.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, oh the lol's, if I even enjoyed that pile of shit I'd end up throwing myself of a building, The reason I don't count metalcore as a genre is cause thats where all the bands that aren't classed as "heavy metal" are thrown into, any bands like bmth aren't metalcore, they're alternative rock
Greig Robertson Meh, I can't say I disagree with your view (I honestly couldn't if I tried because it's your view, lol). Anyway, I respect your view, but you can't deem it as some sort of "waste bin genre" only because people think it's a matter of being worthy to be called metal or not. I've heard some early metalcore bands that are more talented than some metal bands, but that doesn't mean I'm automatically going to call it metal because I love it just like I don't call a band metalcore or non-metal in general just because I don't like it. Also, bmth are post-hardcore type metalcore nowadays. Anyway, apologies for being rash earlier (especially since I was exposed to a real moron).
Everybody I know that don't listen to metal seem to not understand how dedicated metal fans are. It's so much more than "that one cool song" that comes on the radio. Rock and metal has been such a huge part of my life since my dad first introduced me to Queen when I was about 5 or 6. I hope metal never disappears, and that great bands will come forth and take the world by storm, just like I feel Trivium did
I've been seeing an uprising in underground Prog metal/rock bands coming out a lot lately. Thank You Scientist, Native Construct, Ghost Ship, Earthside, Anima Tempo, Dissonia.
I listened to his words very closely and I believe there's still hope to produce raw classic metal like in the days of priest maiden and Metallica that most metal fans can relate to
Tbh I didn't know "real" metal meant screaming constantly (don't get me wrong i love death metal, thrash w/e) but "metal" is just heavy music in general, with kick ass music and staying true to lyrical content. These death metal elitists who think the only real metal IS death metal really need a punch in the groin.
i agree with you man. we need to stay together. we dont need other metal fans to say that a band is bad when all the pop and the other genres are harassing us. metal need need to live on. long live metal.
IMO most of it is shit today. The fact is, everything today is over compressed and computerized removing the true element of this art which is the people who "create". Speaking of creativity...I think the true forward thinkers of "metal" (it's all derived from rock anyway I hate sub genres) are Protest, Mastodon, OPETH, BTBM and the late NEVERMORE...just an opinion...
Kevin S. Barry There is also a complete lack of innovation today. If you compare metal in 1990 to 1995, for example, there is a HUGE difference, but 2014 metal doesn't sound all that much different to 2006 metal. Even the underground bands aren't pulling their weight. I'm sorry to all the extreme metal fans out there, but adding an orchestral element to death metal is an idea that should have happened 15 years ago. It isn't all that exciting or interesting or unpredictable or anything. Metal is just out of ideas right now. There are plenty of good albums but no masterpieces
Agree with you Matt. I had a talk of the same kind with my friends a couple of days ago. We found out that almost no outsdanding personalities and bands appeared in metal during the latest decade. Young metal bands ready to blow up the world of metal, where are you? We are waiting for you!
Thank you Matt you stole the words right out of my mouth man, I just wish more people had a similar point of view as you, once again you have proved why i find you to be a very inspiring and talented individual. I'm proud to say that i actually look up to you as a musician and thanks to all of trivium for the amazing new album!
Oh my this made my day. I totally agree too much POP metal. Look at bands like Pierce The Veil or The Black Veil Brides. People are diving in to it just because it fits in with culture. But it doesn't quite have the power that metal does. I try to tell people the same message all the time but no one could quite say it as well as Matt. I wish I could meet Matt some day. On a friendly note. Not some crazy fan. When I heard this I was thinking of how much Matt has in common with me. I can't believe how BvB or other pop band fans call Trivium posers. In fact Trivium is what could possibly save metal. I remember calling Trivium the best band ever but know I have proven it true knowing their importance in the metal community. I hope all posers will loosen up and watch this. Maybe then they will understand.
I can understand not liking BVB because it's just glorified, watered down hard rock. But PTV are really talented musicians IMO. Not the playing, but the composition. I love Trivium and metal in general just as much as the next guy, but PTV's last two albums were great.
I have just been following Japanese and European bands lately. Lot of good bands out their. I have been out of the loop concerning the state of rock/metal in America. I hope rock music everywhere can continue to thrive and more kids become passionate/take interest in rock music to keep the spirit of rock alive.
I completely agree with Matt, he is a huge influence for me both musically and as a person and i am forming a band with my friends and we're of the same mind as Matt that we're gonna write what we wanna hear so yeah Matt if you see this (however unlikely) then there are kids out there who are taking you up on your request :D
Good point(s) made, particularly about bands supporting each other. Matt seems like an intelligent, thoughtful man...something we could always use more of in the metal community. Build each other up, don't tear each other down! I'll step off my soapbox now. lol
Yup i agree!! This guy is such a massive influence for me and my band! I'm 16 by the way. As a young musician and a metal fan, I promise to keep supporting new metal bands and of course the best music genre in the world for the rest of my life! Long live metal! \m/

And this is why Trivium is one of my favourite bands. Matt knows what's going on, and they know what they're doing when they pick their instruments up.
I like a VERY small amount of modern metal. Trivuim being one of them. Ascendancy is one of the greatest albums Iv'e ever heard, period. out of all genres.
Matt Heafy has always been well spoken; he is the inspiration to my style of metal. In other words, thanks to him, I've made an effort to listen to various genres and incorporate catchy phrasing into my metal playing.
hey matt! you have a supporter right here from Australia and a few others around the Sunshine Coast i know that are thinking of the same thing about the metal scene.
I felt like that a few years ago, still do a little bit, but if you dive into the underground scenes of metal and explore the scenes that are trying to revive or innovate, you will find that one band that knows what they're doing. I've found several such bands in the last few years. Periphery, Born Of Osiris, TesseracT, Corelia, Gojira, Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Faceless, Deals Death, Within The Ruins, Yersinia, Textures, Sarea and so on.
I remember seeing Trivium supporting Asking Alexandria a few years back..granted they played a longer set. I still just couldn't believe they weren't headlining.
I'll be honest when Trivium started out, I thought they weren't very good... I didn't really see them as musicians... But then I watch one interview with Matt and he completely changed my opinion. I actually got what they were doing... Now they're classified as Vets and it's fucking awesome!
Things to learn from this video - Heafy hates pop, metal is awesome, and we all need to quit bitching about other whether this band is better than that band. Listen to awesome music, and promote the hell out of it.
I agree 100% with Matt.Although i think that there are bands out there that do something awesome and just wait to be discovered.Maybe not like other years or decades but there are new bands with great quality coming out!
I think one of the major problems is the lack of musical knowledge is some of the younger bands. All they want to do is write something loud and heavy and yet not include song structure, melody, or any meaningful lyrics. When you hear Matt, Corey, and Paolo talk you know that they know the difference between a major and minor key, they know how to harmonize to bring greater depth to the song, and they know that you can slow the tempo down and still have a heavy thump in the song.
now Heafy is onto something there im a 19 year old metal guitarist and damn me and and few other bands have grouped together to make lets face it (in our opinions) awesome music and people rely too heavily on even getting famous, personally Id just love to perform to people who share that same view on music as the bridge between feeling and a language. By sharing that bridge with others that's a damn good feeling in itself and doing it with lets face people you can call brothers/sisters :)
I have such a good idea for metal Matt and Corey made me pick up the guitar I’m learning I have so many good riffs in mind I want to sounds like megadeth and trivium combined it’s hard for looking for people who have the same idea as you but I agree with Matt on 100%
You hit the nail on the head there. If you don't prefer one band's style, that's totally fine. But if you put them down when they are just trying to do what they like, then there is a problem.
When he said whatevers going on in the hardcore scene right now. He hit the nail on the head every hardcore band nowadays sounds like Emmure and Acacia Strain and I like those two bands but like man I wanna hear shit like DRI or Poison Idea only ones that seem to be holding that up are Municipal Waste/Iron Reagan
There are so many new metal bands in all genres, some of which I personally know. Thrash, traditional, death, black, even glam. You name it! There will be plenty of new metal bands.
Amen brother. Let Metal live on. Unfortunately I know only a handful of people IRL I can enjoy metal with and it saddens me that I get called weird around my area because it's so "pop"-driven. I play music I love, rock and metal whether it be guitar, drums or vocals. I have many great influences, Trivium being one. I just with there was as much going on as there was, say, 10-20 years ago. Guitars. Less electronic, computerized crap. "Play music that's from the heart." - MKH, 2013
band to watch out for in the coming years. Hell they've been constantly touring for like the past 5 months now which can definitely help grow their fanbase. And I only said maybe to Textures because they are very well known in Europe, but sadly not as well known in the US (at least from what I've seen). They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I definitely feel as if they are underground in the US, but I can't with a straight face say that a band that has had TV appearances can be
great "In the Nightside Eclipse" t-shirt man! although i haven't listened too much Trivium myself, (except for The Crusade, which was overall killer album) but his statements, in combination with wearing a black metal T-shirt (whereas black metal is the kind of metal that keeps getting bashed from the new-core stuff, and vice-versa UNFORTUNATELY) show that this guy has the true spirit needed to become as big as fuck. lots of kudos from me.
In my personal opinion, i think he more intends to convey the message that he hopes that people want to be like them in originality and timeless. I think he wants people to evolve into the best metal can be rather than just copy which he notes is going on far too often :) But thats just me and my interpretation Thanks for your comment.
Back in the 80's glam was taking over and Thrash Metal kicked the shit out of it. Now we have pop/emo taking over. We can still show people what Metal is and earn the respect and credit of this amazing genre.
I've always admired of how unselfish Matt Heafy is. Whenever he's interviewed about tours; he would name all of the bands they tour with, instead of saying, "Come check US (Trivium) out."
I totally agree with the pop sound and stuff....but as an 80s metal FANATIC (and not the thrash or death metal)......i wanna know why we dont hear no NEWER bands going the iron maiden route or judas priest or ozzy....everything nowadays is too heavy and annoying most bands wanna make noise metal and not real metal...thats why i appreciate bands new bands like EDGUY, KAMELOT, STEEL PANTHER, H.E.A.T., WORK OF ART, BROTHER FIRETRIBE, RECKLESS LOVE, CIRCLE 2 CIRCLE, WHITE WIZZARD, ....the thing is none of them are real popular ...but theres plenty of good bands
As a musician/Metalhead, I believe Trivium is one of the VERY few modern, original Metal bands that keeps the spirit of true Metal alive. Anyone who thinks they're guilty of anything Matt's talking about here clearly has NO idea what they're talking about. I mean come on, develop an ear for music. Metal is supposed to be a family, stop shit-talking bands and just introduce others to good Metal.
He's right. Heavy metal is a way of life. If you listen to is, don't just download. Purchase! Find a way to support the bands you love otherwise they won't be around to make music anymore!
I totally agree with Matt on this. Most bands today just cover and copy new stuff. I like original music and creativity. I am friends with a band that is new to the metal world but very original. Yes their roots are from older metal singers and players but they are making their own music. If you are interested check out Psychoprism. Blow your mind guitars and vocals
Just because some of their choruses are melodic (and in a way "hooky") doesn't mean they're poppy/cliche! In fact I think the contrast between their melodic choruses and then their heavy-as-fuck guitar breakdowns is what makes them great. Down From The Sky is really the perfect example of that. Its got everything you want- hooky chorus, sick screams, fucking ace bridge guitar riff aswell!
You're forgetting the freedom of expression bro :D He creates music that he wants to, and that's just that... Naturally, a lot of people dislike it, but I for one love every single one of Trivium's songs :) But, again, freedom of expression
I get what Matt is saying. Asking Alexandria was one of the first few bands to do that heavy music mixed with electronic stuff. But on their 2nd and 3rd albums they havent relied on it near as much. TDWP was also another one of those bands to do it originally. But its pretty sickening how so many bands are doing that nowadays.
moving on is good, but respect for the past is also equally as important, in all aspects of life. That's why we still study the masters in all areas of life and media, be it da vinci and michaelangelo and boticelli in traditional art, be it shakespeare and austen and dickens in literature, be it mozart and bach and vivaldi in music. both are important. I think matt is trying to say that listening to old stuff is good for influences, but people need to make the music their own, not someone else's
They done Metelcore in the first 2.Albums and the thirt was PowerMetal and the 4. Metal/Hard rock but the hard rock means the songs with akkustic guitar. The last to albums goes near to old school metal. listen to hailt to the king?
matt KNOWS his shit man, iron maiden and metallica defined the genre and trivium were the best new band we could hope for. ROCK ON TRIVIUM. and iron maiden and metallica, of course.
100% agree with Matt well said. Metal takes skill and talent singing an audio tuned song written for you by someone else does not. Why is sells is beyond me, I guess a lot of people are just dumb.
im not sure, what i think of this....i do believe there is some really good bands out there waiting to be heard.....and sadly most of the time that doesn't happen.....pretty much what i'm saying is ...dont just give one song a listen ...listen to whole album ...sometimes you find jems in bands, you wouldn't normally like....just a thought
I personally find their Shogun album incredibly original, and pure metal. Yes they have been compared to Metallica in the past... and now even Disturbed but there's no discrediting the talent that this band has for writing great metal music. I feel we should support this.
I don't get how he says "Where are the new metal bands"! They're FUCKING EVERYWHERE. The problem is that the bands aren't supporting each other and when the big names go on tour, their management that puts it together sees the small local acts and say "They won't make us enough money" so the same damn tours and the same damn bands cycle around. SUPPORT the little guys and you will find the new metal bands out there! For fuck's sake they're out there! And they're out there in LARGE numbers.
I would love to be like matt heafy ..one of the best frontmen in metal..great guitarist and great singer too.he roars like a lion when he growls.. trivium will be bigger than metallica...mark my words
I mostly agree with him, I just don't get his issue with putting electronic stuff into metal, I think it can be done in a really good and original way (like the browning), It's wierd that he says bands should try something new but at the same time he's being negative about some bands that do try different stuff... other than that, he's on the spot
Maybe this is just me, but out of those bands you listed I would only think that Corelia, Deals Death, Yersinia, (maybe Textures) and Sarea are the bands that most metal fans might not have heard of. Like I said maybe it is just me and maybe most of the metalheads I know are "metal hipsters"(myself included). Periphery is HUGE, along with Born of Osiris. TesseracT is starting to become more and more popular here in the US. Gojira sort of broke out with From Mars to Sirius, then with The Way Of
i never said it was "influence" nor "copying", and i do understand music thank you very much, i make music myself :), and yes matts vocals have got better throughout the albums, i truly believe he has a great voice, always had, and it has just been getting better, but i feel not the songs, i don't think its about screaming, or how many notes, as i love ascendancy's chorus's which play very very slow, but meaningful, and sounded beautiful, cant they stop the notes but do more chorus's that way?
I feel that they aren't going so much into the direction of "pop" whenever they do catchy choruses etc, I just think they are trying to utilize Matt's vocals in a better way and showcase what he can do. He has one of the best screaming voices out there, and he also has one of the best singing vocals. They've done both since Ember to Inferno. To me I feel like they actually care about what they do, and keeping it metal. On a side note, I hope this next album will rule ass.
All Flesh, and finally with last year's L'Enfant Sauvage. Hell they were going to be opening for Dethklok and Lamb of God, and they headlined a tour with Devin Townsend earlier this year. I definitely would not call them mainstream in any sense but I do think that they are moving on up from underground. Now Gojira is one of my FAVORITE bands and I can't tell you how happy I am to see them gaining more recognition (Hell they are supporting Slayer this year). Fleshgod has (at least in my mind)
I used to think the same thing. However, if you watch enough shit you will realize that Trivium has their own sound and writes what they love. Just cause a band gets cleaner...doesn't mean they are poppy or followers. You will learn some day.
Reading all these comments saddens me as a life time metalhead. Matt Heafy simply thinks that there needs to be more kids making metal as original as older bands did and that the brotherhood bond that use to be there weather you were the Metallica guy, Slayer guy or even the pantera guy there was a bond there that's dead. All of you tearing at each others throats in the comments just further his point. Metal is much more then music it is a life style, but rather then defend it you piss on it.
Where are the metal bands? Are you kidding me? Periphery, Tesseract, Monuments, Animals As Leaders, After The Burial, Vildhjarta, Circle Of Contempt, Humanity's Last Breath, Intervals, Protest The Hero, Cloudkicker, ChimpSpanner, The Safety Fire, Red Seas Fire, Modern Day Babylon, Chon...etc There is PLENTY out there. The metal scene is incredible right now. This is a mere fraction of the great metal acts we have today. This should be enough to get you started....
nick k What's wrong with that list? I'm not going to say I'm a fan of every band on there, but there's plenty of talented metal bands on there. He has a point, if anything metal is on an up rise. It's just staying in a state of DIY at this point and not exactly getting popular, which many don't seem to CARE about getting popular, they just want to support the art of making music, which is what it should be about to begin with.
xXAscendingPhoenixXx I don't think I'm the ignorant one considering that most of those bands do have real talent. Have you never heard tesseract? One of the most BEAUTIFUL sounding bands I've ever heard. Animals as Leaders has some of the most insane guitarists to ever exist. Protest the Hero is an amazing band as well, with deep lyrics and amazing guitars. It isn't an opinion matter, the bands mentioned do have talent, whether you want to accept it or not, anyone with intelligence can tell you that.
Very good piece of mind from Matt. He has a point, there is not a lot of support for metal nowadays, people have their heads shoved up too far up their ass, like most of these people that commented.
Exactly what I was thinking. The only reason I write stuff is because I've played guitar 3 hours a day for a year and a half, most of it being scales and I did melodic/harmonic/structure theory in school. Then you listen to something like Snow White's Poison Bite and you want to punch the exec that decided to release such tripe.
He is referring purely to metal and it's sub-genres nothing else because there was a brotherhood now that seems to have faded away with people abusing one anothers likes and dislikes. Fair enough we have our own opinions but like matt said metal is more than music it is a lifestyle and we need to RESPECT that
We will destroy pop for Matt Heafy!
Pop has it's place, support Metal & leave pop to do its own crap.
There were some pop artists with quality like Michael Jackson. Good music is good music. Independent from genre
Don't need to destroy it, the pop artists are doing their part to cheapen it
Do you agree with Matt?
Metal Hammer Official 100%.
Metal Hammer Official entirely \m/

What do you think of the state of metal today?
IMO most of it is shit today. The fact is, everything today is over compressed and computerized removing the true element of this art which is the people who "create". Speaking of creativity...I think the true forward thinkers of "metal" (it's all derived from rock anyway I hate sub genres) are Protest, Mastodon, OPETH, BTBM and the late NEVERMORE...just an opinion...
I can respect your opinion, I am not the 1%. I know plenty about the scene and let's agree to disagree :)
Agreed
With metal today to me it's this emo shit
Can't agree more.. This is why everytime Trivium is within a 200 mile radius of me I get out and go see them! Love it!
music flows back and forth every 7 or 8 years or so ...... and the best is always born ... Underground.
One of the best musicians today. Great fucking band. \m/
+Tyler Worrell I think he's talking about pop music in general, and not just pop "metal".
nanomachines ehh, they both sound the same to me
Tyler Worrell ..true.
Funny coming back to this and hearing his comments when Trivium has become everything he said he hated.
fuck i need to start a band now

Loved the positive aspects of this. Metal should be about coming together, not dividing each other.
trivium is what got me into metal
and now i'm playing guitar, i won't dissapoint you MKH
Revocation, Fallujah and Battlecross give me hope from the future, but that bands you listed are awesome as well.
Very well articulated (and correct) opinion. Big fan of Matt and Trivium
Matt couldn't have put it any better. Also I think he is the most appropriate person to speak on behalf of metal in 2013/14
I was thinking the same. Thanks for writing that!
This video gives me life for my band and my career
Metal today is about looks and overproduced records.
Very rare when you find solid content.
now Heafy is onto something there im a 19 year old metal guitarist and damn me and and few other bands have grouped together to make lets face it (in our opinions) awesome music and people rely too heavily on even getting famous, personally Id just love to perform to people who share that same view on music as the bridge between feeling and a language. By sharing that bridge with others that's a damn good feeling in itself and doing it with lets face people you can call brothers/sisters :)
I completely agree. Anyone who wonders were the new good bands are, isn't searching very hard (or at all).
Matt makes an extremely valid point here, and I love how much of a well-spoken person he is.
Don't worry matt! a lot of my friends play instruments and love metal (including myself) and we're striving to be a metal band.
I have found the right inspiration for my mission, beware world. HERE I COME!!!!!!
band to watch out for in the coming years. Hell they've been constantly touring for like the past 5 months now which can definitely help grow their fanbase. And I only said maybe to Textures because they are very well known in Europe, but sadly not as well known in the US (at least from what I've seen). They are one of my favorite bands of all time and I definitely feel as if they are underground in the US, but I can't with a straight face say that a band that has had TV appearances can be
Look up Forever In Terror idk if they're new new but I think they only have one CD and its pretty epic
Thanks for the recommendation, these guys are pretty sweet.
great "In the Nightside Eclipse" t-shirt man! although i haven't listened too much Trivium myself, (except for The Crusade, which was overall killer album) but his statements, in combination with wearing a black metal T-shirt (whereas black metal is the kind of metal that keeps getting bashed from the new-core stuff, and vice-versa UNFORTUNATELY) show that this guy has the true spirit needed to become as big as fuck. lots of kudos from me.
In my personal opinion, i think he more intends to convey the message that he hopes that people want to be like them in originality and timeless. I think he wants people to evolve into the best metal can be rather than just copy which he notes is going on far too often :) But thats just me and my interpretation Thanks for your comment.
He just spoke wisdom. Check out Sylosis, people. They were on tour with Trivium, and now I know why.
Back in the 80's glam was taking over and Thrash Metal kicked the shit out of it. Now we have pop/emo taking over. We can still show people what Metal is and earn the respect and credit of this amazing genre.
It BETTER. Lets hope you're right!
keep looking to the underground and listening to the classics until something finally does change.
if I thought any song was too commercial from that album it was Dusk Dismantled, if you see the way they use it at concerts you would know.
Very well spoken! I agree we need new metal from the heart and soul! \m/
This is so true (from matt) im a kid who plays guitar i hope to impress him later in life
This is why Trivium are my favorite band.
Ghost is awesome man, I would go see them live if they werent touring with sevenfold
I think matt is trying to say that listening to old stuff is good for influences, but people need to make the music their own, not someone else's
step 1: you get a guitar and play open on the 6th string.
step 2: on the same string plat the first fret.
step 3: repeat step 1 and 2.
B-but what about A Skyline's Severance and everything else before In Waves and The Crusade?
i know i'm going to be buying the new trivium album when it comes out, plus the five finger death punch album in november
Miss may I and After the Burial!! like it up, real musicians in the hardcore metal scence
he is sort of right especially about 'pop' music. im a drummer and im the only person in my school who plays as well as listening to metal
Gojira sort of broke out with From Mars to Sirius, then with The Way Of
what year were you born?
i never said it was "influence" nor "copying", and i do understand music thank you very much, i make music myself :), and yes matts vocals have got better throughout the albums, i truly believe he has a great voice, always had, and it has just been getting better, but i feel not the songs, i don't think its about screaming, or how many notes, as i love ascendancy's chorus's which play very very slow, but meaningful, and sounded beautiful, cant they stop the notes but do more chorus's that way?
Matt you're great! Thank you, man!
Where are the metal bands? Are you kidding me?
Periphery, Tesseract, Monuments, Animals As Leaders, After The Burial, Vildhjarta, Circle Of Contempt, Humanity's Last Breath, Intervals, Protest The Hero, Cloudkicker, ChimpSpanner, The Safety Fire, Red Seas Fire, Modern Day Babylon, Chon...etc
There is PLENTY out there. The metal scene is incredible right now. This is a mere fraction of the great metal acts we have today. This should be enough to get you started....
Are you fucking kidding me with that list?
nick k What's wrong with that list? I'm not going to say I'm a fan of every band on there, but there's plenty of talented metal bands on there. He has a point, if anything metal is on an up rise. It's just staying in a state of DIY at this point and not exactly getting popular, which many don't seem to CARE about getting popular, they just want to support the art of making music, which is what it should be about to begin with.
Jimmy Is The One True Ham Your ignorance amazes me.
xXAscendingPhoenixXx In what way is he being ignorant? Please explain.
xXAscendingPhoenixXx I don't think I'm the ignorant one considering that most of those bands do have real talent.
The templars hear our sea shanty's from a mile out.
what song is playing ?
How does one write music in binary?
