Had one of these for 4 years! Carry it almost everyday either in the woods or work where I'm also out in the country because i'm a farmer. I've chopped large saplings with it. Cleared brush with it and even killed snakes with it and it has yet to loose its sharpness or bend or chip or break or fail in anyway it really is a great knife I recommend it.
Garret, dont kid urself. This is knife is shite. Spend a bit more and get urself a proper bowie. Cold steel, ontario, kabar. U cant go wrong. If not get a tramontina machete.
@@JayJay-iw7dl . For the price it can't be beat, it's a matter of knowing how to use it correctly. It's not meant for chopping wood or clearing bush, or throwing against hard targets. But it works great as a pig sticker, if one has the nerves for that sort of activity!
Enjoyed your test. I just recently bought one of these on sale at Tractor Supply for $11. Haven't tried it yet. But I have to say that I was impressed that what was originally a $19.99 knife stood up to your test as well as it did, especially when many more expensive knives failed the tests as well. Fortunately, I never intended to use this knife against brick or concrete block, just light field craft ( if that). I AM grateful to you for exposing the falsehood of this knife having a full tang construction, though the packaging I purchased it in did NOT claim it was a full tang blade. Unfortunately, that myth HAS been perpetrated in numerous ads for this knife, and they needed to be called on it. Thanks
I'm pleased that you took the handle apart, I am very wary of "full tang" knives that are not, I wish I had a portable X ray machine just to see what is hidden. Great video 👍
A magnet works too. If you practice with a magnet enough, you can feel where the pull of the steel is weak or non-existent. And yes, stainless steel blades do still have a magnetic pull unless its a cheap piece of shit made using kitchen equipment stainless.
I think that the knife exceeded all expectations for such an inexpensive knife. I own one and it cost under twenty bucks. The knife would never be used to break bricks so I think for that amount of money this would be a winner out there in the forest. As a matter of fact I would think that a lot of blades that cost a great deal more money probably would not top this knife or at least do much better in your knife survival tests. I would not hesitate to purchase this knife in the future after what I have just seen it do. Thanks for confirming that I made a good buy.
This fucking thing... I picked one of these up at Canadian Tire when I was a teen. First thing I did was test it on a slab of particle board, only to discover a thumbnail sized chip in the edge after the second swing, the blade completely parted from the tang when I tried to baton with it. I'm honestly shocked it preformed so (relatively) well in your testing.
Well, I am sure that Winchester has changed the design / heat treat over the years. I have heard of others breaking their bowie knives easily, and I was surprised that it lasted so long. Thanks for watching ! Mayor Fuglycool
hi mayor ,when the tip broke that was a fail for me , I was considering buying this knife a while ago so pleased I didn't,i bought the ka-bar instead much better knife . I've found over the last few months there's a lot of knives made in China with inferior steel coming onto the market and saying things that aren't true (ie saying full tang when it's not ) excellent video as always my friend thanks for sharing
Yes, the Winchester Bowie was a pretty big letdown. . . I really wish that they would use a better steel, but they are looking at price these days. Glad you loved it, more tests to come ! Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor, I like your videos because you seem like a bro that anybody could hang out with. I seen that others have mentioned testing the Mossy Oak Bowie (the "Break-Up Country" version). It's a very affordable $20 knife, but it is tough as nails. The Winchester Bowie is very questionable as a product, I've seen some variations and quite a few broken, so it seems like some people get a good one and others get a clunker. I am surprised though, because the one you tested held up pretty good for a knife with a poor reputation. Some people criticize you for beating the snot outta knives, but I'm glad you do, because it saves us money and misfortune. You know you're the real deal when a Marine says "Lemme see if the Mayor tested that one!" before I buy a new knife. Cheers, bud, and Semper Fi!
Thanks friend, I am glad you love the videos. I need to see if I can get a hold of the mossy oak bowie for testing. Thanks for watching brother, and I am glad I am able to help ! OORAH ! Mayor Fuglycool
Bought this thing for 20 on sale. Thought it would hold up enough was sharp and had a good weight to it. Broke the tip off 5 minutes into trying it out returned immediately.
WOW, I am very surprised this under $30. knife lasted as long as it did in these tests ! How many of us or anybody would abuse a knife like this ? And I'll bet a like type knife costing 3x as much wouldn't do much better ?
Mine came a lot sharper out of the box. Maybe some element of quality control, or perhaps they've improved it? I bought it for a camping trip where I expected to use it a lot and let other people use it, and didn't want to put wear on my nicer knives. It held up well and I have no regrets for the price. Great video.
I have a much bigger and much older Bowie Knife from Pakistan it's a little rusty but it gets the job done. Also dude you are abusing that poor knife I wish you had some respect for them they are supposed to be treated like it has a spirit no matter what brand they are your number 1 companion
Say the first thing I want to say, good test, excellent test. You will put your knife through all kind of things in a survival situation. Nothing what you just did, but it's a good test. Thank you I like your test I will be watching your show for other reviews on other knives and products that you come across. Thanks again and I'll be watching.
I bought that same knife years ago for $20 on Amazon. Had it for a week and then the knife broke into 5 or 6 pieces from the center of the blade to the hilt. I was very disappointed.
It was $20 though lmao. If you want a cheap beater knife order the Remington sportsman series knife the one with partial serrations, not the gut hook one (that one is garbage) it's $20 and mine has held up really well over the years.
I bought one years & years ago. I use it to limb with after cutting down the 3-4" trees. Yeah....its my beater...if I break it $20, no biggy. She's still going strong, but not trustworthy to me. Actually surprised it took that much abuse. I am always worried of it shattering.
I purchased this knife, comes razor sharp, light, easy to work with, own lots of knives, each knife special use. For what they sell this knife for, I think I got a good deal. Knife can be sharpened to scary sharp very easy, the steel calls for it, not meant to be abused.
I am using a husky portable work table X Workhorse. Thanks for the kudos on the gloves, they feel really nice, thanks to Hollywood :) Thanks for watching friend ! Mayor Fuglycool
Thanks for the video. I bought this knife before I had any idea what a good knife might be. I knew it would chop well, and I know what not to do with this blade.
I have that knife. thanks great vidio. I was marking some trees on a trail with it and put about an 1l8 inch bend in the blade. but thanks now I know everything about my knife.
This video is pritty brutal we all know a twenty dollar walmart winchester bowie is ok for the money but i wouldnt trust it to hold up with anyone looking to use it daily to chop down small trees or prosses fire wood it wasnt created to do that in the first place it really was originally intended to be used as a weapon to fight with like when they still fought using swords and what not i bought one when they first came to walmart here in IL.since ive had it i mostly used it to cut up food in the kitchen and it works wonders on large mellons or eaven choppin up a deep dish pizza once in a while..ive owned mine for about four years and its still works and holds an edge just fine it also lives in my knife drawer most of the time and only get it out on special occasions like partys it makes for a nice conversation peice not to mention it can cut a Nice big Birthday cake all day Long..i give it about a six out of ten..and my EDC of choice is The 2017 "Buck Reaper" NOW THATS A KNIFE..
I don't want to sound like a troll but that wood was hard as a brick and you chopped at the far end of the blade, I personally chop mid blade to the handle.
Hey mayor that knife was terrible dude hers my suggestions 1.ontario rat 3.....2.cold steel survival edge love the videos the only knife channel I can trust keep up the awesome work
Awesome suggestions ! I will try to get around to them next year. Super swamped with the requests, but I will see if I can get another Ontario soon :) Thanks for watching ! Mayor Fuglycool
Finally someone who really tests knives. I'm on a marathon of your videos and you helped me make a decision on the glock 81(ordered today!) GREAT channel!
Thanks ! The Glock 78 / 81 is my favorite general purpose survival knife. Very well made, and the steel is nice. Keep it oiled ;) Thanks for watching friend ! Mayor Fuglycool
I think with a good edge this knife will hold up fine to moderate wood processing tasks. I don't know of any instance where I would put a blade through such a level of abuse comparable to striking bricks and standing on it. For the money it will do the job it was intended for.
I was gonna pick one of these up until i found out this aint full tang.. i have a smaller winchester knife i bought for a little less that is true full tang and lasted me for years. I always seet safety recalls on Gerber knives too
I have one. It's my beater blade. Snapped the tip off twice but hey, that's why bench grinders exist. Edit: Wow! $30 for that right now!?! I paid $16 back in 2007.
what do you do with the broken knives? Also im starting a black smiths web site in a year or so for custom orders would you like to test my work? Id love to see my knives be tested the extreme ways you do.
I would love to test your blades. Please, message me on G+ hangouts for info on where to send the blades for the Mayor's Test. Thanks for the positive kudos :) I usually keep most of the broken blades, but sometimes I do sell them at the local shows. People seem to pay a little more money for a broken blade, knowing it was used in my test :P Mayor Fuglycool
FWIW, Carolina Knife & Tool is some kind of sub-brand of Gerber. If you google the address on the back of the packaging, you'll see that's the same address as Gerber Gear.

7:50 that snap noise,, was that your heart breaking? Cheap knives have a place in the market, destruction testing is not the target market and bending a tip occupies no place in actual usage of a tool. Would you shoot a steel beam with a pistol at point blank range?
I think if you had a small pry bar AND this knife your be perfectly fine. Of course these tests are probably assuming the knife is the only tool you have. But if you're headed into uncharted territory and there's a reasonable possibility of getting lost for more than a few hours, you should probably consider bringing some other tools along in a back pack. PS: This is called a push tang. It's a step above a rat tail tang and a step below a half tang, which is fine as long as they correctly advertise it.
your absolutely right lesson is dont make blades in china. i am not an american but a name like Winchester still means quality but this is such a let down. but all cheers to Mr fuglycool your test are actual field tests and gives the product a run for their money keep up the excellent work.
"The Notorious Brick." Sounds like the moniker of an obese redheaded Superhero. I wouldn't buy the knife but for normal use as you suggest it held up reasonably well. Nice to see the new additions to your fowl assistants
I think that if a knife doesn't ace the paper test, you should sharpen it till it does, then continue with a properly sharpened blade. Your audience is mostly "knife guys," and most of us know how to properly sharpen a knife, so this would make for a more balanced edge performance comparison.
Good video man. The Winchester Large Bowie Knife's ancestors weep! lol. But in all seriousness I'm staying clear of that knife. Although it might make a good display knife.
Awesome looking knife, but yes, more of a display piece. Many people have had theirs break, I must have gotten a really good one to last so long. :) Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool Yeah. I tried my Marine Corps Recon Tanto knife out on some thick brush today and I was very impressed by its cutting ability. I've underestimated the thing for awhile now. This Winchester knife is about as well built as my knock off Ka-Bar.
I just recently found this in a cabinet of mine (I forgot I stashed it!) for food prep, it’s cool. Anything else, I wouldn’t rely on it. Stay fugly, mayor.
For the price I've seen this for, it's not bad. You could survive in your back yard overnight with this, no problem as long as your house is no more than 50 feet away....
It was quite entertaining to watch a cheap knife get destroyed but since when are knives used in such extreme conditions like that? There seems to be a fine line between testing and attempting to destroy.
Yes, this camera is starting to lose it. I have noticed it lately, and I will need another camera soon. I cannot change to manual on this model, and I will replace it by the end of year. Thanks for watching ! :) Mayor Fuglycool
Saw another review of the Winchester large Bowie, and the tang broke after two or three times throwing the knife. This blade is at best a wallhanger, not a serious outdoors or fighting blade.
This test proves once and for all that, given enough abuse, any knife will eventually fail. On he other hand, almost any knife, used properly for the purpose for which it is intended, will give years of useful service.
Just bought a very similar bowie from Walmart ,Mossy Oak bowie which is actually full tang for 20$. For the price it's a very decent knife. Btw mayor I've seen your BF4 videos before are you interested in the upcoming BF1?
Yes, I am getting ready for BF1. I hope it is as good as BF4, but time will tell ! Thanks for watching, and I will have to check out that mossy oak someday. :) Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool FYI the public beta starts the 31st and last a little over a week so you'll get a chance to try it before it releases. I'm sure you will love it if you liked BF4.
I could not believe that the cinder and brick broke that fast. . . Crazy, but the knife could not support me LOL Thanks for the support ! Mayor Fuglycool
I had the same exact knife from when I was 10 to when I was 13. The handle itself broke when I was chopping a piece of wood, it was kinda disappointing. Anyways what's a good strong bowie knife you would recommend?
woah when i tossed mine at a tree the handle hit the tree and split all the way down the middle so i just made a new handle out of some basic Oak Wood and it works like a beauty now my blade stayed sharp till today it started as a well balanced Knife but the handle is garbage so i recommend if your handle breaks then build your own like i did then it will be a insanely good knife
Hey Mayor, Your research has inspired a few of my recent purchases, and I'd like to thank you for a job well done! Just wondering.... Can you test an MTech 096? Nice knife for the price, think it'll hold up to the Mayor's challenge?? Respectfully, Collector
I will keep that blade in mind, I have not tested any MTech knives yet though. Looks pretty sturdy, hopefully it can withstand the test :) Mayor Fuglycool
Sprechen Sie deutsch, Mayor ? I didn't know that... By Jove ! How many strings do you have to your bow ? May I expect something in french from You ? Chüss/Bye/Sayonara/Salut !
This knife felt pretty light in my hands for a bowie. . . I was not too impressed either. I am surprised the wood handle took so much abuse, but it did finally crack. Thanks for watching friend :) Mayor Fuglycool
Except the Remington sportsman with the blaze camo handle, thing is beast for $20. And this is coming from a guy who's EDC contains $80+ knives. The Remington sportsman gut hook knife with the rubber handle is complete shit though, same price as the good one.
Wow, so it wasn't full tang after all. Winchester should just stick to making rifles, they're not doing so well in the knife market, and they need to quit lying to people saying it's full tang when clearly it is not!! Thank you for showing the tang after the testing proving the truth.
Got one as a gift and love it. But i appreciate all gifts i get. Plus i carry it for safety and whatnot. Along with others of course. Never carry only one knife. Lol Honestly tried using it for skinng one day was not horrible. Held the edge well. I enjoy it.
Being as I have no plans to cut cinderblocks, I just ordered the Winchester Large Bowie Knife. Thanks!

I thought the brick was going to claim another victim, but it lasted a while longer !

This fucking thing...

From the looks of the inside of the blade, I think it got cancer. Before it died though it's spine cut through the brick and concrete like butter.
I am surprised it took the brick and cinder like a champ !

The reason it cracks so easily but the edge doesn't fold over easily is because it's not tempered. Therefore brittle.
It's a $25 knife. Made to cut cheap things, not be a home renovation tool
I had one of these in 2011. The tang wasnt even connected to the first rivet. I was making feathersticks for a fire and SNAP went the blade. Not cool.

you should do the test about the knife uncle henry (schrade) ..Uncle Henry 181UH Bowie Full Tang Fixed Blade
For 20 bucks, the knife remained very well. Those are things for which a knife is not made. Good video.
Still want to see how the Condor Moonshiner fairs in your tests. Will see what I can do to send one to you. Cool vids man. Keep up the good work!

I always do Mayor! Take care
I baton kindling with a MTech MT-096 Bowie knife it has done very well. I've literally beat the shit out of it!
yo tengo uno igual, y cortando una rama se aflojó la cacha, nunca lo había usado y al primer esfuerzo se aflojó, saludos!

You know its bad when it rattles just tapping a limb.
Thanks for watching friend, this blade would be lots better if it was made with better material :)
Glad you love the chickens !
Mayor Fuglycool

Yeah. I tried my Marine Corps Recon Tanto knife out on some thick brush today and I was very impressed by its cutting ability. I've underestimated the thing for awhile now. This Winchester knife is about as well built as my knock off Ka-Bar.
Plisken X51mm
Awesome man, yeah seems like a solid choice.
Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool
Yeah its a good knife.
To be fair, for that price it seems to be pretty decent.
I just recently found this in a cabinet of mine (I forgot I stashed it!) for food prep, it’s cool. Anything else, I wouldn’t rely on it. Stay fugly, mayor.
Thank you my friend :)
Mayor Fuglycool
For the price I've seen this for, it's not bad. You could survive in your back yard overnight with this, no problem as long as your house is no more than 50 feet away....
It was quite entertaining to watch a cheap knife get destroyed but since when are knives used in such extreme conditions like that? There seems to be a fine line between testing and attempting to destroy.
The Mayor's test is rough ;)
Mayor Fuglycool
I've had 3 of these yard sale finds broke everyone this one seems to have held up better
that hollow ground blade tells you it will break hollow grind is great for smaller knives not so much for choppers.
Great vid as always, but I do have one complaint. What is up with the focus?
Yes, this camera is starting to lose it. I have noticed it lately, and I will need another camera soon. I cannot change to manual on this model, and I will replace it by the end of year.
Thanks for watching ! :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Sorry to hear about the camera. I'm looking forward to more videos. Thanks as always!
Ray Huang
No prob :)

Maybe you should watch the knives that pass my test.
Mayor Fuglycool
have you tested the ka bar becker bk3 yet ......intrested in seeing you run your test on it!!
It would be awesome to test that blade ! I got to check it out soon, looks like a popular model :)
Mayor Fuglycool
+Mayor Fuglycool that would be awesome..thank you sir i will be waiting and watching for that video. thank you again!!

Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool FYI the public beta starts the 31st and last a little over a week so you'll get a chance to try it before it releases. I'm sure you will love it if you liked BF4.
Angel Mendoza
I am still on BF4 quite a bit, PC mostly.
Love the game a lot :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Where did you get that cinder block the paper store? LOL good tests though not so good knife.
I could not believe that the cinder and brick broke that fast. . . Crazy, but the knife could not support me LOL
Thanks for the support !
Mayor Fuglycool
I had the same exact knife from when I was 10 to when I was 13. The handle itself broke when I was chopping a piece of wood, it was kinda disappointing. Anyways what's a good strong bowie knife you would recommend?
Cool stuff. Almost happy to see it fail haha. Keep it up man!
Awesome thanks for the support friend !
Mayor Fuglycool
I think you'd get about three times the views and corresponding tubebux if you didn't say safety first every ten seconds. Just saying.
I disagree
I agree
Test is very cool. truthful. I have this knife.
considering no one is going to buy the knife just to go out and stab wood and try to cut wood like you would with a small axe I think it's pretty good
woah when i tossed mine at a tree the handle hit the tree and split all the way down the middle so i just made a new handle out of some basic Oak Wood and it works like a beauty now my blade stayed sharp till today it started as a well balanced Knife but the handle is garbage
so i recommend if your handle breaks then build your own like i did then it will be a insanely good knife
Hey Mayor,
Your research has inspired a few of my recent purchases, and I'd like to thank you for a job well done!
Just wondering.... Can you test an MTech 096?
Nice knife for the price, think it'll hold up to the Mayor's challenge??
Respectfully,
Collector
I will keep that blade in mind, I have not tested any MTech knives yet though. Looks pretty sturdy, hopefully it can withstand the test :)
Mayor Fuglycool
That's knife abuse.
this is why I watch the show.
Thanks for watching friend :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Good test . I own one of those cheap pieces of crap. I'm surprised it made it that far
Thanks !
Mayor Fuglycool
hey major,
tolles Video, danke für deine Tests. Mach weiter so! 👍
Gruß aus Deutschland
Ich bin froh, dass Sie den Test geliebt ! Grüß dich von Texas :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Sprechen Sie deutsch, Mayor ? I didn't know that... By Jove ! How many strings do you have to your bow ? May I expect something in french from You ?
Chüss/Bye/Sayonara/Salut !

;) Thanks for watching friend !

Thanks to You !

Mayor Fuglycool
I appreciate what you do, thanks.
Knives with gun manufactures names on them are mostly garbage. Hate this knife but I enjoy your videos.
This knife felt pretty light in my hands for a bowie. . . I was not too impressed either. I am surprised the wood handle took so much abuse, but it did finally crack.
Thanks for watching friend :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Except the Remington sportsman with the blaze camo handle, thing is beast for $20. And this is coming from a guy who's EDC contains $80+ knives. The Remington sportsman gut hook knife with the rubber handle is complete shit though, same price as the good one.
Alexander Moffitt
I have to check that one out :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Wow, so it wasn't full tang after all. Winchester should just stick to making rifles, they're not doing so well in the knife market, and they need to quit lying to people saying it's full tang when clearly it is not!! Thank you for showing the tang after the testing proving the truth.
really impressed by such a cheap fixed blade China knife.
this is a test, not a disarmament of bombs
How do you order one of these knives?
Got one as a gift and love it. But i appreciate all gifts i get. Plus i carry it for safety and whatnot. Along with others of course. Never carry only one knife. Lol
Honestly tried using it for skinng one day was not horrible. Held the edge well. I enjoy it.
