First off, I just want to say I'm seriously impressed with this knife. The fact it's still pretty usable after all that is insane. Those tests would, and have killed a lot of fixed blades. You could actually reshape that blade and still use it. However... It's a clip point blade with distal taper, and a fairly thin tip. It's quite obvious if you start prying with it, it's gonna snap. It isn't the steel's fault, just how the geometry of the blade plays out. That thin edge not breaking chopping that concrete honestly amazed me. The lock never "failed", it simply developed horizontal play, and that's easily fixed. That's why your pivot screw is there, bud. If anything I feel even safer using my Cold Steel folders, and this serves to show how tough they really can be. Try to get your hands on a Recon 1 in Tanto point, or an SR1. I'd like to see you break those. 😉
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Atticus Colten Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Every knife will fail a 90 degree tip test if the blade fails to life the wood out of the plunge cut. There is also some basic physics at play here. Thinner tips will penetrate deeper into the wood medium thereby making it even more likely to break than a thick tip with shallower penetration. I have this same XL clip Voyager and the blade is the same thickness as the 4 inch model which, when coupled with the long distal tapered 5.25" flat ground makes for an excellent slicer and overall Outdoorsman folder. Thicker tips will lift the wood at the expense of less efficient cutting geometry.. Only you can decide if a sharpened crowbar is the right tool for you. For me the XL Voyager is the knife i reach for most often when heading out for a day hike into the woods or an outing in the Canoe.
I've always carried a folder most of my 46 yrs. Out of all the brands I've owned I'd say cold steel by far the best folders. And I don't think you can find a better knife for the cost. I own 3 of the Voyager models. Well only 2 now cause one my tanto Xl I dropped at work. Tried to recover it the next day but it vanished. and nobody at work is talking lol. No more guessing games for me I've found my brand.... Cold steel👍
Horizontal blade play can easily be fixed by tightening up the pivot unless you put so much force on it you've stripped it or warped your liners and handle scales near the pivot. With a blade length that long for a folder most of the force will go there instead of the lock bar because of the triad lock, once again, fixable with a set of torx wrenches.
I am very impressed! Bought 2. One for me, and my son. We, are not going to be testing them at all... YOU, have already done it for us! Thnx, great video!!!
Wish you would've tried tightening the pivot... It also makes no sense to try to break the tip before the tests that require penetration during the test. Breaking the tip should be last as obviously that design won't have a tough tip. I still have doubts about the lock failing. I think it was a loose pivot.
I have personally carry the Voyager XL for many many years and it is a excellent knife it never failed me I would stand by it if I had to use it in a self-defense situation
I had the 4 inch version, same CTS-BD1 steel. The tip broke off about 1/4 of an inch while removing a staple from a shipping box. Cold Steel triad locks are strong, but I seriously think their steel has bad quality control. Don't believe me, just google "cold steel fail". I still carry my 6 inch blade Ti-Lite though, love this folding dagger!!!
Dear Honorable Mayor Fuglycool, do you have or plan to make any torture test videos on the RUI K25 and/or the Shadow-Ops Heavy Duty Bayonet? Those are both full-tang versions of the M9 made in China and available on Amazon.
Hmmm. Do you think the old AUS8A blade would have failed as well? How about the BD1 tanto? That's a heavier knife and a thicker blade. I also prefer the tanto blade for self defense. (BTW, How many times did you have to throw that knife before it stuck in the board?)
the more brittle the steel, the sharper the edge and better the retention. the softer the steel, the more flexible it is, and easier it is to sharpen. finding a good balance is the knifemakers art. if cold steel wanted to make a knife you could stand on, or bend the point around, im sure they would have made a hammer or decent butter knife. these tests are interesting, however, its like watching somebody use a screwdriver to hammer nails. wrong tests for the wrong tools.
very nice test. I have a XL voyager and large clippoint they are great. the xl is my folding chef knife. you need to get your hands on a XL tanto. I believe it is a little thicker. ( 4mm) and thick all the way to the point. it would probably do a lot better in the couple areas where yours failed. plus it looks like a folding pocket samurai sword!
On the brick and cinder testing you can see where your over strikes deformed the plastic handle around the pivot, I’d be interested to see if all strikes were on the blade if the lock/pivot would still wobble
Beast of the Far East not sure why he said made in Taiwan when. actually some of the better and best knifes are made in Taiwan. your more subpar and shit knifes are made in China.
Next time try the Tanto Version I have several in Aus8 A Steel I really like them !!!! I can never see any reason to abuse a nice knife like this but I appreciate Your test as it shows the Quality Standards of Cold Steel Knives!!!! I agree the tips of the Clip Point Versions are too thin for My liking!!!! Great Video Sincerely Thomas Raymond of Fresno California!!!!
I think Lynn Thompson might have found this video. I have a newer version that's made with AUS 10A. I have several Cold Steel knives and machetes, and love all of them.
Hello. I always like how you test those knives. What about testing cold steel push dagger? I wonder how strong the push dagger tiny neck can take stress.
Great test! I was impressed how long the lock lasted. I'm still a fixed blade guy tho. Faster to deploy and stronger than any folder. Love ur new power glove & armor accessories. Safety first! and Vance, if ur reading this, thx for donating the blade!! 🙂
Good test . In my books this folding knife did great for what it is. You are correct on tip thickness and steel . The tip is to thin and the steel is to hard and brittle . Normally we all know that hardness of the knife improve edge retention but it damages the durability.
Tough test for a folder, yes, but it gives us an idea of how strong and durable the knife is. Tip test is always very useful, love to see the tip tests. I don't see the tip test in itself as a measure of the quality of steel, it takes the entire test to do that, but I feel like even a thin tip should have held up a lot better. It's not just the type of steel. The purity (quality of ingredients and mixture itself) of the steel and its treatment and hardening, go along way as far as blade and tip strength. I feel like something in the steel or the process of the manufacture of this steel could be tweaked to result in a much stronger tip (even though its thin). When you look at the micro fractures in combination with the broken tip, it makes me think the steel is a few points harder than it should be. Otherwise, I think the knife did very well for a folder.
I thought it was a great test....really shows what the knife can and can't handle. I've had a Voyager (large) in aus 8 and I loved it. I passed on to my bro-in-law and his daily use is like your destruction tests and it's still held up after all these years. Maybe a face shield for tip tests next time 😃 Overall great test...thanks
Mayor, plz test the Cold Steel SR1 Lite. It’s cheaper and MUCH more robust. I bet it passes your test with flying colors and becomes your new favorite knife.
Interesting. Cold steel did a knife test of one of its own folders with the Italian Extrema Ratio Rao and guess what, the Cold steel knife prevailed. Now you show that the lateral stress is not handled by the otherwise bomb-proof triad lock so well in this particular design. In the test by Cold steel, the Rao also held a lot of weight before the lock gave up. But only lock strength was tested. Now if you could do a test of this special Extrema Ratio Rao folder, it would be more informative than the simple vertical force test of the lock, as this is closer to a real abuse the knife has to take. I would be happy if I could see such a review. I believe that both knives are good in similar circumstances. But the test was biased on a particular aspect. I.e not real-life use. Handling comfort, weight, lock strength, style, fit and finish, price should also be considered.
Maybe this destructive test should be modified for the folding knife. It would be interesting to see how the Recon 1 XL does, but save the tip test for the end, if it must be done. Clip points are just not going to do as well with lateral stress.
hi mayor good to see you, another awesome video like the knife even though it failed the test infact I'll consider buying one, did you have any joy in finding the British army survival knife for a test, would like to see if it would pass your test. I've purchased recently the schrade Leroy 45 what a knife I liked it so much I bought another one excellent video as always
I believe in cold steel products but I don't believe knives or certain knives are created equally, I don't think this particular blade was made for survival or being a beater knife. There's the recon 1 I believe that is a great beater in my opinion, but I don't think having a folder like this and testing the tip like that should've been done. Do you think it would made a diff if it was a tanto point?
Stabbed the Voyager large CP into wood, pulled it out, the tip was bent slightly. Bent it back with little force. Snap ! That escalated quickly as well. As in your video. Very delicate tip. Very thin. Good penetration , but... Too weak, bending the tip back shouldn't have made it snap. It was a slight bend. A tip that thin profits from being a little less brittle.
Hi Mayor, Try a Cold Steel XL Voyager Tanto in AUS10A It might do the trick - and survive those tests Anyway, very good and very relevant test !!! XL Voyager insanely strong ! As you said : there were fixed blades that failed miserably (I recall that Schrade machete I guess that broken in 3 parts on the spine test ) Also the steel CTS I guess it's too hard (too much Carbon) making it more brittle although it excels in edge retention ...
I don't know, but I think the AUS8A version would have passed your tests. Everyone trashes AUS8A today, but it takes a wickedly sharp edge and keeps it for a respectful period. It may not hold its edge for as long as the BD1, but sharpen mine frequently when needed. I also think the tip wouldn't have broken so readily.
Theses voyager knifes are awesome EDC knifes that's what cold steel calls it I have owned. 2 XL tanto voyagers both setated love the serations cut anything
It's a folding knife not a survival knife , the tip is really fine did you think it wasn't going to break. Also the horizontal blade play is because the Pivot is loose , all you had to do was tighten the screw ....
i had " Cold steel Recon 1 Tanto point . funtastic knife , so good : hospital security took it from me upon admitting me to the hospital and stole it . I never got it back - so , i guess the knife passed the "cold steal" test . I agree with others - the folders Mayor test has to be different from fixed blades . Doesn`t make common sense - by definition -folders naturally some 40/50% weaker . Very like the channel and the host . Thank you . PS . Would be cool if you could review/test reasonably Shrade`s SWATMB Medium M.A.G.I.C. Assisted Opening Knife and / or Military & Police SWMP4L Large M.A.G.I.C. Assisted Opening Knife . i`m going to get one of these . Would like to know your opinion . Thank You !
Know this post is 3 yrs. ago but ; the number 1 reason I won't be carrying a $300 knife. Whether "confiscated" or stolen it would be too hard emotionally for me to buy a replacement knife in that price range. Most common reason - lost. Cold Steel Voyager - good knife, reasonable price !
Another great video my friend. Even though the knife failed overall, it still held up well and its obvious strengths lie in cutting and chopping. Your test showed where it falls short and that is very insightful. Looking forward to seeing more vids man. :)
I like the hard steel for edge .the xhp steel is really something .any knife can be destroyed. Maybe you should have a folder category.i wouldnt call it a fail when it could out do some fixed blades .
You should do different tests for the foldable knifes, it is a very different knife than the full-tang knifes it would be very nice to do different tests that the pocket knifes would need to be tested
The lock was never loose by the way, it’s the freaking pivot, and also that’s an clip point, so it’s tip is more fragil than if it was the tanto version, so it’s not the steel, and knives are should to be never used to pry, that’s why the tip breaks
I'd like to see the spyderco manix 2 lightweight in the cts bd1 do ur test mayor. Compare who's version and heat treating is better. Glad see another video my friend.
mayor your a true knife testing master. all other knife "testers" on utube go really weak with it. major props for all ur knife testing man. you restored my faith in my voyager xl man lol keep up the destruction brotha
I believe that's the same steel my Cold Steel Spartan had. I was carving a cedar walking staff with it and a half moon shape broke out. I consider that unacceptable considering what I was doing. I was going to send it back to Cold Steel along with the Kukri that broke where the blade and the tang met. It was one I bought years ago made in the USA out of their old Carbon V steel. Unfortunately my blade collection was stolen so I didn't get to. To be honest the Kukri broke while batoning some cedar which would be considered abuse. I've owned more Cold Steel products than I can remember and those are the only failures I've experienced. Imo Cold Steel and Ontario are two of the best when it comes to value. I'm actually impressed with that folder. The lock didn't actually fail but I do think that steel isn't as strong as the AUS8 and AUS10 they use. Or maybe they just didn't have the right tempering or heat treatment for it. I'm glad they stopped using it. I would never buy another one of their knives made from it.
While it didn't pass, it's a commercial for buying one. That thing took a horrible beating.
And I am very glad you're back. :)
I would never do that to my baby folder cold steel...only maybe to fixed blades
First off, I just want to say I'm seriously impressed with this knife. The fact it's still pretty usable after all that is insane. Those tests would, and have killed a lot of fixed blades. You could actually reshape that blade and still use it.

@Enzo Andre Instablaster =)
@Atticus Colten Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Atticus Colten it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account !
@Enzo Andre Glad I could help xD
Im not telling u what to do but u should maybe think of doing the tip test last?
True! First pound in the knife and stand on it...then do the tip test. Too bad he didn't have an older AUS8A knife. I've seen them pass the tip test.
Every knife will fail a 90 degree tip test if the blade fails to life the wood out of the plunge cut. There is also some basic physics at play here. For me the XL Voyager is the knife i reach for most often when heading out for a day hike into the woods or an outing in the Canoe.
my Gerber Prodigy just rips the wood up
Would you consider trying the same model again in tanto point? A much stronger tip.
I've always carried a folder most of my 46 yrs. Out of all the brands I've owned I'd say cold steel by far the best folders. And I don't think you can find a better knife for the cost. Totally agree XL Voyager best knife for the money
How about testing the Voyager XL Tanto blade?
Can you re do his test with the new aus 10 A
Horizontal blade play can easily be fixed by tightening up the pivot unless you put so much force on it you've stripped it or warped your liners and handle scales near the pivot. With a blade length that long for a folder most of the force will go there instead of the lock bar because of the triad lock, once again, fixable with a set of torx wrenches.
Possibly a parallel to length axis dendritic sub zero quenched 154 CM steel would remedy the tip snapping. Possibly.
I am very impressed! Bought 2. One for me, and my son. We, are not going to be testing them at all... YOU, have already done it for us! Thnx, great video!!!
Oh yeah... Subscribed!
Thank you friend :)
Mayor Fuglycool
i've only done that with 5 dollar knives i was gonna trash anyway.be crazy breakin a 60$ knife
Also this model comes with a tanto tip that is thicker at the tip of the knife
I believe the Voyager xl tanto would have passed all of the tests.
Painful to watch, love the Voyager
Best folder that I have tested :)
Mayor Fuglycool
You could easily restore the tip and continue the penetration test. Excellent video as always. Best regards from France.
When you're safety glasses take your eye out instead of the knives.
I have seen the aus8 Steel version of this knife pass a test like this. Is it possible that the steel is too hard that if broke????
Thats not the lock its the pivot .tighten it it will be fine .
Do a sabenza!
I had the 4 inch version, same CTS-BD1 steel. The tip broke off about 1/4 of an inch while removing a staple from a shipping box. Cold Steel triad locks are strong, but I seriously think their steel has bad quality control. Don't believe me, just google "cold steel fail". Gonna test the Tanto version sometime soon :)
I usually throw once. Been throwing knives no spin style since the early 90's lol.
Mayor Fuglycool
I'd hate to *BD1* to have this happen to mine....
ba dum tssshhhh.
You need safety contacts to protect you from your safety glasses.
And a good tailor. He could make a heavy groin guard from material of useless kevlar vest.
Real safety first! =)
the more brittle the steel, the sharper the edge and better the retention. the softer the steel, the more flexible it is, and easier it is to sharpen. finding a good balance is the knifemakers art. if cold steel wanted to make a knife you could stand on, or bend the point around, im sure they would have made a hammer or decent butter knife. these tests are interesting, however, its like watching somebody use a screwdriver to hammer nails. wrong tests for the wrong tools.
I would love to see these tests on the Cold Steel SR1! Much thicker blade. Bonus points for tanto.
I'd love do see something in one of the super tough steels like 3V or 5160! Nice tests man. Very consistent. Very overkill. VERY cool. Great channel.
Красавчик,честный тест,не то что наши снимают,канатики режуть)
I'd love to see more folders.
very nice test. I have a XL voyager and large clippoint they are great. the xl is my folding chef knife. you need to get your hands on a XL tanto. I believe it is a little thicker. Just curious, what's your opinion on knives made in Taiwan.
Beast of the Far East not sure why he said made in Taiwan when. actually some of the better and best knifes are made in Taiwan. your more subpar and shit knifes are made in China.
Yeah, in my opinion Taiwan made some of the best knives in Asia, second best to Japan. We used to be part of Japan anyway.
Danny Schreckengost you paid good price and get good quality , you paid low price and get poor quality , include made in USA too
Next time try the Tanto Version I have several in Aus8 A Steel I really like them !!!!
I have several Cold Steel knives and machetes, and love all of them.
;)
MayorFuglycool
Hello. I always like how you test those knives. What about testing cold steel push dagger? I wonder how strong the push dagger tiny neck can take stress.
That is a good idea, sometime I should get around to that blade :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool thank you for your response
Would like to see the same test with the tanto.
Tri ad lock is simply impressive. Better way to see the limits of tri ad lock than in the cold steel videos...
Great test! I was impressed how long the lock lasted. I'm still a fixed blade guy tho. Faster to deploy and stronger than any folder.
Love ur new power glove & armor accessories. Safety first!
and Vance, if ur reading this, thx for donating the blade!! 🙂
Wave knives are pretty close in deployment speed. See Emerson knives, or the Spyderco Endura Wave
I wouldn’t say the horizontal play is an issue, just tighten the pivot screw. The lock is fine as there is no vertical play.
What steel was it, CTS BD1? Have you tried AUS-10A?
when you tighten the pivot does the side to side play persist? please answer.
I passed on to my bro-in-law and his daily use is like your destruction tests and it's still held up after all these years. Maybe a face shield for tip tests next time 😃 Overall great test...thanks
Basically any survival situation you get into this Folder from Cold Steel will hold up
It held up pretty well for a folder on most of that. When the profile was shown that tip was way too thin to have stood up to the tip test.
Hey mayor, how's it going, do you do sword testing as well, was just wondering, ty an have a nice day.
Will have swords in the next season thanks friend :)
Mayor Fuglycool
Mayor Fuglycool ,ok kool awesome, will be looking forward to seeing when you do,ty
Not that it matters three years later but the tanto version doesn’t taper like that. Maybe a second chance tip test one day?
Coming from the future you can try the sr1 folding knife but we don't really want you breaking expensive knives left and right
Top test again Mayor. How about testing the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman ?
Cold steel makes knives for the brick apocalypse lol. Cool test Mayor, thanks man.
Neeeeeeeaaaaaawwww you'll be back!!
GET TO DAA FUTUREEEEEEEHHHH !
Mayor Fuglycool
Can you test cold steel 4 max scout ?
Thank you for this worthy test. I`m impressed.Greetings from Germany.
I believe in cold steel products but I don't believe knives or certain knives are created equally, I don't think this particular blade was made for survival or being a beater knife. There's the recon 1 I believe that is a great beater in my opinion, but I don't think having a folder like this and testing the tip like that should've been done.
Hi Mayor,
Try a Cold Steel XL Voyager Tanto in AUS10A
It might do the trick - and survive those tests
Anyway, very good and very relevant test !!!
XL Voyager insanely strong !
As you said : there were fixed blades that failed miserably (I recall that Schrade machete I guess that broken in 3 parts on the spine test )
Also the steel CTS I guess it's too hard (too much Carbon) making it more brittle although it excels in edge retention ...
You can fix the horizontal blade play by tightening the pivot.
I got distracted by the chickens 🐓 in the back. Had to rewind a bit. Nice video by the way.
awesome test! Probable never going to buy a serious knife unless you've reviewed it first. Thanks!
You should try Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto folding knife.
Can we try that again?
It's a folding knife not a survival knife , the tip is really fine did you think it wasn't going to break. Also the horizontal blade play is because the Pivot is loose , all you had to do was tighten the screw ....
mayor fuglycool you da man. I would love to see more frequent videos but I understand that you do have a life outside of UA-cam..
Can you test the cold steel leatherneck semper fidélis d2 please ?
i had " Cold steel Recon 1 Tanto point . funtastic knife , so good : hospital security took it from me upon admitting me to the hospital and stole it .
Thank You !
i had one of those as well man...confiscated in Rhode Island by police...bought a talwar good shizz man
Know this post is 3 yrs. ago but ; the number 1 reason I won't be carrying a $300 knife. Whether "confiscated" or stolen it would be too hard emotionally for me to buy a replacement knife in that price range. Most common reason - lost. Cold Steel Voyager - good knife, reasonable price !
do same test with a chineses ganzo knife. model g7041. plz
Can you do the Shrade SCHF 52
I have the voyager tanto. No problems with tip.
You should do different tests for the foldable knifes, it is a very different knife than the full-tang knifes it would be very nice to do different tests that the pocket knifes would need to be tested
Can you try the same with the cold steel spartan?.
The lock was never loose by the way, it’s the freaking pivot, and also that’s an clip point, so it’s tip is more fragil than if it was the tanto version, so it’s not the steel, and knives are should to be never used to pry, that’s why the tip breaks
Keep these videos coming man. They're great
So glad I stumbled upon your channel. Only watched one video so far and, well, I'm hooked! Looking forward to more knife reviews👍
You should test the Cold Steel SR1 and the First Edge 50/50.
I personally think you should change your testing for folders. there just not gonna be as tough and durable as a fixed blade.
"Worlds sharpest &strongest knifes "
Hey mayor, I'm still loving your video but I have a question, will you or have or ever thought about testing the AK 47 field knife by cold steel?
Took it through a heck of a test
Good call on the body armor.
could you test a spyderco paramilitary 2?
try to test cold steel outdoorsman lite , it is a budget knife (25$) but very good knife for the price
It’s good to see that in real world usage this would be a good folder to put into your edc rotation. Great video tho.
I'd like to see the spyderco manix 2 lightweight in the cts bd1 do ur test mayor. Compare who's version and heat treating is better. Glad see another video my friend.
It might fail pretty bad though with your test, at least the lock up. It's strong but not like the triad.
mayor your a true knife testing master. all other knife "testers" on utube go really weak with it. major props for all ur knife testing man. you restored my faith in my voyager xl man lol keep up the destruction brotha
Great review. You and Tac test them the hardest!
Cool man thanks ! TAC is a cool guy ! :)
Mayor Fuglycool
could you test the tanto version
Can u test muela knife
That is a piercing tip, you can not do that.
The horizontal blade play can be fixed perhaps touching the pivot screw.
Regards!
Do the test with the Tanto blade, the clip point is not the right blade style for these tests.
