Ha! You're right. The funny part about that is we asked each participant to independently choose a survival skill to teach that would be helpful for Joe in the desert. In our triple blind experiment, all three of them chose fire. So... the final conclusion is this: firemaking is the most fun survival skill! :) Seriously though, many of the tasks you use to make a fire (chopping, hacking, detail work, etc.) can be used to create the essentials of shelter, water, food. In that regard, the video is still useful in answering the question. My two cents. -Ben

Blade HQ Hahaha that's so great, what are the odds?! Honestly, I agree, it is a good display of the versatility of its capabilities, as there is quite a bit involved in each of those methods. I'm glad you you see the irony in this though. Fawning over the blade!!!

Sog seal pup is an overrated Pos that seals dont even use (I believe they use the old steel srk) but the Ka Bar, though not the strongest, or most versatile, is not overrated. It has been used by many soldiers in every major conflict the us were involved in since ww2 and has not let many soldiers down. I own one for general purpose and it is a great knife. It holds an edge well, but can be sharpened fairly easily, is good for general outdoor uses and in a combat situation of any sort I would want nothing other than a full size Ka Bar.

It's a complete myth to say his name was pronounced boo-ie. There is zero historical evidence on how to pronounce his name. People wrote his name often, but nowhere is there a pronunciation of it in print. Families with this last name that come from the area where he was born use both pronunciations.

When I was in college, myself and 4 other guys rented a house. We had a mastiff named Fred. He was huge, dumb, adorable, and as genital a dog I've ever known. He just walked around drooling everywhere begging for pets. One Sunday morning Fred was barking like crazy, and he just kept barking. So I'm like 19 so I grab a flashlight and a big Bowie knife I got for Christmas from an uncle, I go upstairs and outside to find Fred and a racoon at a standoff. The raccoon is perched on a chain linked fence and had mauled the shit out of Fred's face. That racoon froze when I pointed that flashlight at it, and I impaled it with that knife, then threw it into the yard where Fred was delighted to finish it off.
I didn't realize how obscure the whole situation was for quite a while. But in a survival situation I think a hatchet would be a better tool if you had to pick.

I love Bowie knives. My favorite is the wonderful Western W49. In Texas we pronounce it Boo Wee. So that’s the correct way... Hahahaha.

Well I’m also from Texas, and from what IVE experienced I’ve only heard people pronounce it like bow-tie. This was the first time I’ve heard it pronounced “boo wee”. Not saying anyone is wrong, but that is quite odd. I mean I don’t think that there is a proper way to say it. It’s just like Caramel, Nevada, and Tomato. People say it differently.

The issue is the grind is quite low. Raise the saber grind and keep the hollow and you'd be fine.

I live in Arizona, I do a lot of hiking, and a lot of wood foraging, and I can tell you his experience with the different woods in the Southwest not acting like I have seen on multiple channels in the North and the East is real. The woods here are very hard, very dry, and will often dull a blade before they will cut.

I don't understand why people think the Bowie Knife won't make a good survival knife. Back in 1987 I went threw Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) and the instructors carried Bowie knives and were very good at using them. I was issued the Ontario 499 Air Force Survival Knife, though small it did a great job. The short of it is firearms of Jim Bowie's time were not as dependable as today and he wanted a large knife that had to be made strong to be used as a fighting weapon and survival. In the long run a Bowie knife helps keep the wolves at bay. Love you channel.

This is the best video you've ever done, BLADEHQ. Bowie knives are my favorite knives, and to see them at use, is always fun. Btw, I've always heard people pronounce the name both ways, so I feel there is no right or wrong as. way to say the name Bowie, but my own natural preference is BOW-EE.
