I do it a little bit different. I strip down into whatever I may eat as a meal, for when I have time to get into the pack and eat a meal, and usually dump all my snacks into a freezer bag that goes in a more easily accessible pocket or pouch, so I can munch when I get a moment to munch. Just like a pistol is something to help you fight your way to your rifle, munchies are what get you through until you can finally "enjoy" a meal. Just gotta say, MREs are WAY better than the C-rats I spent 10 years having to pack and eat back in dinosaur days. But C-rats did have one big advantage over MRE's - if your primary weapon went down, you still had your can of beanie-weenie and/or fruit cake to throw at the enemy! 😉
I have a giant box of all the extra shit in these MREs I dont use (drink mixes, coffee, gum, etc.), I'll never use them. But I can't bring myself to trash it. I'm tempted to turn them into inverse MREs. All the worst parts of a MRE. None of the calories.
Hey, all those little odds & ends are really nice to have while on-the-go in daily life. A stick of gum while commuting, a drink more refreshing than lukewarm water while passing through someplace, or a pack of skittles while hiking or jogging can make the day a good sum easier.
Not ashamed to say that I "rat fucked" my fair share. Menu #11 Chicken & Rice. You got M&M's ... AND a chocolate covered graham cracker. I used to get $5 bucks each for those little mini bottles of Tabasco sauce. To hell with those particle board oatmeal cookie bars. Eat ONE ... and you can't shit for a month...
Good info. My only suggestion is to use your own cook set to heat up your meal. Chemical warmers stink and are easily identified from a distance. Also bring something hot to drink if you aren't on hard routine.
You toss the excess trash and anything that doesn't have calories. The drink mix is optional, its straight sugar. You dont "need" it. You only need one spoon. If you are stripping 6 meals you only need one spoon. Get a reusable one.
I always kept most of the food (I’m not eating 20 fucking mints) and always kept the salt in particular. Made them a bit bigger than yours but never worried about food. We wouldn’t eat all them most of the time anyway come to think about it…
Alright, pretty much stripped it down the same way. 4 24 48 hours pretty much just a main meme. On a spoon, Hot sauce is a must. As far as heating it, no. Bring the instant coffee. But that is also mixed and drink cold more for the caffeine factor. And if, if if we have the luxury of heating a meal I wouldn't bring the heaters in the amori packets, they're bulky, and it's a waste of pour water into it. And unless you're gonna find patty water, Instead harboring two or three trioxane tablets, Make? A small little furl in the dirt. Place the trioce tablet in it. Light it in heat water for coffee in a canteen cup. Definitely do not bring a little voting stove with me. Hits weight bulky and they are useless. Just dig a little hole in the ground with your hand and put the tricking tablet there and then cover it up with dirt. I know some out there who you have a s*** about the environment will say. Oh, you're putting one of those chemical heat tabs in the dirt. I DONT CARE. So, end of that discussion.
Slurping down that Peanut butter pack you forgot you had in your cargo pocket at 2am hits different.
Pocket food hits hard anytime...

I always wondered how you military folk packed your MRE's considering the giant packaging MRE's come in.

I'm using a Vargas alcohol stove that is super small. You are right: hot food and drink can make a tremendous difference.
