Since you're a spy booking it from a pyro you're likely already on fire so you'll eat a lot of damage on top of being basically locked in place
I think it's also good to note that if a pyro is being too much of a pybro, and constantly spy-checking, they will easily become distracted with reflecting rockets, especially with crits. Uber pushes will also keep a pyro fully distracted, cloak and dagger is really fantastic for waiting for these moments and picking off targets the enemy pyro isn't around. If another spy is on the same team as you, and you see him making a play, you can use that to your advantage as enemies get hyper-focused onto a spy they found and will never check their back for a second spy. You gotta let the plays develop instead of forcing them.
Pybros use RTR They can unsapp buikdings before destroyed BUT NOT BEFORE DELEVELED now that lvl 3 sentry is a lvl 2 much less knockback Lvl 2 to 1 dispenser and removes all metal Lvl 1 to undeployed tele means no enemies teleporting for the time being. Imo pyros benefit more Like heavies and demomen From sticking near engy nests to defend or pushback. Help the class with area denial ammo health replenish and teleporting allies to the front lines faster Vs Fighting and probably getting killed not even taking down 1 player. Ill stick to sticky trapping huo firing near a dispenser or flame checking around the area and airblasting. As an engineer main a good team hold >>>> a great team push. Pushes can be stopped easily and are harder to do coordinate with more than 3 people. An average team hold will help keep everyone alive better less coordination just do not let the nest go down or enemy push you back. That is literally all there is. The longer you hold weaken or kill enemies coming TO YOU the easier it is to move up and reposition / gain more ground. Sentries buildings sticky traps and positions take longer to setup but harder to dismantle vs going on the offense and breaking an enemy hold
As usual, you deliver excellence Jonto! As a Doom fan, I adore this video's particular style, and is probably my new favorite in the Spy Psychology series. Also, caught that brief moment of The Healer Stalks, that was a nice touch.
The doom intro for Pyro gave me chills, as if I was a spy facing off against 3 Combo Pyros with nothing but a cloak revolver, a kunai and stock watch. Amazing feeling
12:42 It should be noted that the self explosion radius of the Detonator and the surface radius of the Scorch Shot share the same amount of range (110 Hu according to the TF Wiki) - but in particular the Detonator can theoretically have slightly longer range due to its ability to connect higher in the air.
@@axolotol_342 yeah it does. Not even trickstab gods can touch me anymore. At this point a spy could only kill me with some ambassador headshots but I haven't met a spy who can aim yet lmao
I noticed that basically all the pyros in the end clip you killed were mindless wm1-ers. More skilled pyros won't do that, and some of us have good enough tracking to make trickstabs nearly impossible without some lucky hitreg, though we do slip up occasionally. Ive done some spy myself, and when dealing with a more skilled pyro patrolling, cloak and dagger+spycicle is key. Some of us(such as myself) don't always constantly flamespray and instead rely on just spotting a disguised spy via behavior alone, so assume your disguise kit is useless and you won't hear us coming, hence cloak and dagger. When detected, first priority is BREAK LINE OF SIGHT. After that, thats when I trigger my spycicle. If attempting to kill a more advanced pyro, either catch them off guard at range, or wait for a burst of noise from elsewhere nearby(to mask your decloak) and the pyro being distracted(say, busy playing mind-games with a soldier) and then try to go in for the stab. That's my input as a pyro main with some experience in other classes. Ngl i kinda feel bad for spies sometimes, what with how hard damn near everything screws you guys over.
Little correction: Fire particles do actually accelerate with your movement, that's pretty much why the exploits of getting stuck as pyro then just using the detonator to have an effectively infinite range flamethrower.
Honestly I makes it even EASIER for a pyro to track you, because if you're paying attention you always know when the spy is coming. Plus, it basically tells me that WILL go for trickstabs at every opportunity. Source: my experience in killing trickstabber spies
@jontohil2 You can wait until your health gets low and then activate it last second and take advantage from your speed boost and then use The Secret Joestar Technique™
Man, as a Pyro main, the bit that kicked off the "Predicting Them" segment seriously got me. I feel like that's the entire Pyro vs. Spy matchup in a nutshell, Pyro definitely doesn't always require you to outsmart your enemies like Spy does. Still totally gonna at least *try* though, can't hurt to add prediction and trickery to my game plan especially since Pyro also thrives on ambush kills. At the end of the day, maybe we're not so different after all... 🔥
The ANIMATION! The MUSIC! The USEFUL TIPS! 🤩 (with actual numbers to back it up, like 96% speed for a backwalking spy VS 100% speed for a forwardwalking pyro) You got yourself a not only a new sub, but also a like on every video of yours I've seen so far, and hopefully the proudness that someone's who'd ignored the spy class for years is going to try to play it for the first time in a LOOOONG while. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! Keep up the good work 😎
I love how so many Pyros when they catch a Spy think it’s a free kill, but then they realize that they just ran into your entire team ALSO SPY HAS A GUN
Pyro main here, I love your video, and how you're not portraying Pyro like an absolute braindead moron like many others do nor like "GG EZ kills". My best advice for Spies trying to fight Pyros and live: if he's alone and you're a little far away, the stock revolver 3 shots a full health Pyro from a decent distance where the shotgun doesn't do a lot, but if he's decent and noticed you he will most probably start juking. The Ambassador is great if you can land one headshot, but otherwise it's really risky to get close to him. Besides that, a Pyro that is distracted or fighting someone else will be just as easy to backstab as any other class, just mind the potential chaos surrounding the fighters... I think the most important thing to note for all of us is that while we have different skill levels, the ability to adapt to one of us changing their playstyle is the most vital and game-changing skill for anyone to have (a Pyro who killed you before who shows the same patterns after you killed him will become much easier to kill than a player as any other class who is aware about you and may try to adapt their playstyle to catch you off-guard while you were having fun bullying the inexperienced Pyro). With that said, I wish everyone reading this a fun while playing TF2 and if we ever meet that I hope we can have some interesting fights.
Hey Jontohil! I'm a recent subscriber that, admittedly, came into the channel and the Spy Psychology series as a Pyro main looking to better deal with Spies. But after I applied the things I learned from the series I've made Spy one of my mains! Your videos have really helped me learn the basics for the class and has even taught me something about Pyro! (E.g. the flame particles relative to Pyro's speed). If you have any advice on inifiltrating Engie nests I would love to hear it! [Though I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the Homewrecker is gonna be covered] All in all, thanks for making these wonderful videos and I look forward to seeing more of the series and learning new ways to mess with people
It's so amazing how even after so many years such a great content is made for this game. Keep going, after your vids and 20hours of playing spy I'm finally able to hit top once in a while and enjoy my spy gameplay.
YESSS. I’ve just been getting into playing spy again after temporarily maining other classes and pyros have become such a huge problem for me I’m so glad you made this video. Also I’m glad to see the series is back.
Idk, maybe it already was mentioned in some video, but I think it would be really cool to make a spy movement video, cause I think it's the most important and hard part in playing spy. Would be cool to see your guide about this part of gameplay.
12:44 the det actually has a larger explosion radius than the scorch, and at times is more dangerous than scorch due to its air burst giving the pyro more control on the explosion and thus easier to get caught in the blast
Ayo, you know it's a good night when Jon uploads at 5am in the morning, lol. I'll be honest, my main strategy has been to just wait till they're distracted, disguise as a Medic, target them. Some Pyros are a menace in a casual lobbies. And when a Pyro wants to WM1, they're rarely suspicious of the Medic that's magically behind them. I know it's not gonna work all the time, it's just my go-to. Disguising as Medic tends to be really good in general though. Even if players are suspicious of your Medic disguise, in the heat of the moment they're just not going to notice unless you bump into them. Heck I've had a Scout use his Mad Milk on me, on my Medic disguise, because I was on fire and basically gave me the backstab. I'm proud of that moment.
13:15 You should've mentioned that there is a noticeable green drip effect when doused that I'm pretty sure makes you blink and every other enemy can also set you ablaze which makes you no longer effective
Notes for if you do run into a Mannmelter Pyro: They do not need to set you on fire to use their crits. And if your team has a few pyros, chances are this pyro is loaded with at least 5 reserve crits if they're competent. More experienced Thermal Thruster pyros tend to switch weapons before landing, yes, you can do that, and it allows the pyro to prepare to deal damage before landing, which is very critical in a chase.
this will help a lot while dealing with those pesky little brats also i love it how in every spy psychology video that you make it obvious that SPY HAS A GUN

As a pyro main who sub mains spy, this channel is one hundred percent the best channel for beginning spies and intermediate pyros. Great jokes about the pyro mains at the beginning. As a pyro main who plays for highlander, I despise most brainless furry pyro mains who seek for anytime to spit on spies. (P.s. hate solves no problem and every class main/player can be toxic, don't judge a book by its cover, unless it's a pyro wearing the head case, then they are a furry) this channel is phenomenal for an intro to spies and TF2. Side note on the revolver. As I sub main spy, thx for reminding newer players spy has a gun but unless you have God tier aim and positioning, the revolver will get u killed if you don't use it against a lone pyro. Some notes from a a pyro main here, 1, gas passer is actually pretty good when your team realizes what it does 2, a good back scratcher pyro can easily chip your health with the flame thrower and finish you off with one melee 3. Be wary of tmates using jarate, mad milk or gas passer, as they can be reflected 4. Air blast IS useful, it allows us to force you in a direction, sure we cant see you, but now we're 98% certain your now against that wall Also popcorning an unprepared spy is pretty effectice at messing them up

This is why I like the back burner. It forces them into a 1 v 1. If they don't face me, they die and end up as KFC.
@@CaptDestroi love kfc!!!!
You just debunked my playstyle. Thank you for helping me better myself in my journey to scorch frenchies and protect my team :D
As an engineer main, it's always the second spy that gets you.
No one ever expects the second spy!
Pybros use RTR
They can unsapp buikdings before destroyed
BUT
NOT BEFORE DELEVELED
now that lvl 3 sentry is a lvl 2 much less knockback
Lvl 2 to 1 dispenser and removes all metal
Lvl 1 to undeployed tele means no enemies teleporting for the time being.
Imo pyros benefit more
Like heavies and demomen
From sticking near engy nests to defend or pushback.
Help the class with area denial ammo health replenish and teleporting allies to the front lines faster
Vs
Fighting and probably getting killed not even taking down 1 player.
The longer you hold weaken or kill enemies coming TO YOU
the easier it is to move up and reposition / gain more ground.
Amazing feeling
i play both of the pyro vs spy dynamic, its always so fun when you notice things you learned on one class benefitting your play in the other class.
This video feels like one of those safety videos that you’re told to watch before doing something dangerous
As a pyro main, the way you portray spy-checking pyros is surprisingly accurate to a pyro main's mindset when spy-checking.
12:42 It should be noted that the self explosion radius of the Detonator and the surface radius of the Scorch Shot share the same amount of range (110 Hu according to the TF Wiki) - but in particular the Detonator can theoretically have slightly longer range due to its ability to connect higher in the air.
Detonator can explode really close to pyro mid air giving higher boost than scortchsshot that requires to hit ground
@@realdragon And on top of that, the explosion force of the detonator is higher as well

As a pyro main, I’d like to mention that the dead ringer is very noticable, and it will NOT save you from a good pyro.
Honestly I makes it even EASIER for a pyro to track you, because if you're paying attention you always know when the spy is coming. Plus, it basically tells me that WILL go for trickstabs at every opportunity.

12:39 Detonator can also help pyro to close distance with you.
The ANIMATION! The MUSIC!
The USEFUL TIPS! 🤩
(with actual numbers to back it up, like 96% speed for a backwalking spy VS 100% speed for a forwardwalking pyro)
You got yourself a not only a new sub, but also a like on every video of yours I've seen so far, and hopefully the proudness that someone's who'd ignored the spy class for years is going to try to play it for the first time in a LOOOONG while. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! Keep up the good work 😎
I love how so many Pyros when they catch a Spy think it’s a free kill, but then they realize that they just ran into your entire team
ALSO SPY HAS A GUN
Wont stop my hands from catching you.
Because most of the time it is a free kill.
Then he crits and w+m1's your entire team's frontline blindly.
I’ll be honest, I’m just loving how every video can involve the iconic “SPY HAS A GUN!”
After watching about 100+ videos on TF2 on UA-cam, this is the only one that's mentioned that walking backwards is slower than walking forwards.
I mean its common knowledge no?
@@VTpier the game doesn't really do a good job at explaining this though, and these guides are targeted at all skill/knowledge levels.
[Though I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the Homewrecker is gonna be covered]
All in all, thanks for making these wonderful videos and I look forward to seeing more of the series and learning new ways to mess with people
It's so amazing how even after so many years such a great content is made for this game. Keep going, after your vids and 20hours of playing spy I'm finally able to hit top once in a while and enjoy my spy gameplay.
00:47 how spy mains immagine themselves when using the kunai, ambassador and dead ringer:
It would be quite funny yes
Wow, that first minute in a half was really cool. Who could've known that Spy had a gun?

Jontohil: when running face away from the pyro
Backburner:
If you get caught off-guard with a backburner forget escaping, you'd be dead before you'd reasonably be able to act.
Not much you can do either way. You either die to the crits if you’re in range, or the pyro is faster in you so you’re in range anyways.
Great video. The visual/audio gags land well, and the info is concise and easy to understand.
as a pyro main i used this video to help me track spies more easily
JONTOHIL, WHAT HAVE U DONE!?

14:37 the only thing they fear, *IS THE FRENCH*
12:44 the det actually has a larger explosion radius than the scorch, and at times is more dangerous than scorch due to its air burst giving the pyro more control on the explosion and thus easier to get caught in the blast

jonto: *SPY HAS A GUN*

Him using Doom references means 1 or more of 3 things:
1. He is a cool gamer
2. Proving he's not a weeb
3. Pyros are demonic
13:15 You should've mentioned that there is a noticeable green drip effect when doused that I'm pretty sure makes you blink and every other enemy can also set you ablaze which makes you no longer effective
being underestimated is such a great power.
same thing happens with the manmelter, but yeah this is a video for spy mains not for pyro mains.
"Avoid the gas cloud and you'll be fine"
@@Jontohil2 bro up there 👆 didnt get that theres no way to avoid the gas cloud.
@@sirsigmondsamnson7008 you never said that it was unavoidable, and well... it is easily avoidable
So its basically like spy and pyro playing hide and seek but the loser gets burned to death and experience the most painful death
If your team has even 1 scorch shot pyro that mannelter pyro basically just has infinite kritz
Grand job as always. I’ll certainly be implementing these tactics into my Future Spy Play.
Fail to mention the stunlock on the Scorch Shot.

7:40 SPY HAS A GUN-
Spy has a gun we all say in unison
I still can't believe my little bro managed to make it inside this Spy Psychology video!
I’m a pyro main watching this video because I want to branch out and get better at spy
( which often isn't the case (that's assuming they're not a brainless bloodthirsty furry)) keep in mind that everything has a counter in TF2 and sub to johntohil2. Keep up the great content🎉
5:30 Pyro has backburner-
While bunny hopping + strafing forward is unlikely to be effective at the basic level, bunny hopping backwards is a good alternative when dealing with the backburner.

@@ruur1490 its not recommended to play Spy or Engineer until you have the basic idea of how the game works.
@@O5MO that's generally one of the reasons I'm doing this series. Spy really complex and doesn't have a proper tutorial series for beginners.
Some notes from a a pyro main here,
1, gas passer is actually pretty good when your team realizes what it does
2, a good back scratcher pyro can easily chip your health with the flame thrower and finish you off with one melee
3. Be wary of tmates using jarate, mad milk or gas passer, as they can be reflected
4. Air blast IS useful, it allows us to force you in a direction, sure we cant see you, but now we're 98% certain your now against that wall
Also popcorning an unprepared spy is pretty effectice at messing them up
What exactly does the Gas Passer do?
@@an-animal-lover gaspasser will coat an area in gas for a few seconds, enimies covered in gas will ignite if they take ANY damage. between the large slash zone and pyro having the arm of an NFL player he can assist against crowds or spies for a long distance. The way it charges up is a little weird but if your running either crit-thrower you only really need one kill to recharge

5:24 but what if backburner?
Well, you die and learn to use spycicle for that match
Most backburner pyros tend two be flanking more and less with their team, so imo it’s not that huge of an issue unless you meet on flank (though even then you can fall back two your team much faster). If they’re using backburner as stock coz they don’t know how two airblast, then yeahh tough luck

With being a Pyro main myself, I can easily tell you easier ways to try to get out of the “danger zone” let’s say if the Pyro has the degreaser, and he/she has a panic attack shotgun too, you as a Spy main can simply just shoot him when he has to hit you with the fire particle first, or easily go to your team as FAST AS YOU CAN, or that pyro is gonna kill you, let me say another example, just imagine the Pyro has the dragons breath, and has a flare gun, you can do what this guy said, and, (if the Pyro already found you somehow) you can use your gun or even try to trick the Pyro that you fell off because you were in a panic, I hope that can help y’all!
