Ah yes. That art of being a distraction. I still remember one time I was playing Blue Scout on Badwater 2nd and had made it into the backlines. To my surprised I bumped into a friendly Spy and after the traditional TF2 handshake of shooting each other a few times I looked at him and he looked at me and without a word I could tell we had the same idea. He hid in the corner as I pelted a backline heavy who saw an annoying scout hide around the corner in a dead end. Of course he came to get his free kill and just as he was about to shoot, from the darkness *STAB*. The whole thing was so perfect I still remember it to this day. I've never had anything quite as coordinated as that since though I still make sure to shoot at friendly disguised spies if I think he's trying to fool someone to better sell his disguise. The enemy team ignoring someone on my team is one of the biggest spy giveaways.
As another equally good Spy youtuber once said, Spy's effectiveness is determined by how balanced the team struggle is a team crushing or being crushed won't be affected by a spy much because they'd either not need the help or not be able to capitalize the push opportunity, so his effect is felt more when both teams are equally competent on holding each other off since the smallest opportunity window can easily snowball from there. Kinda hard to accomplish that when 5 blokes on your side are squeaky Frenchmen and the opposing team is smart enough to get 1 extra Pyro.
@@grimmsoul3096Lol, how? When the entire map is a sight line and he has near-perfect aim? I get the idea of this however. Stay out of sightlines, flank him, outplay him, and pressure his position. Also he has a total of two items which invalidate spy and pyro (razorback + danger shield) I know spy has a gun but the backstab can be done instantly and you can guarantee that sniper's death. And you're going to have to move into his sightlines eventually to push up.

Once when I was spy with some other guy we had the best play possible. There was heavy-medic combo and there were 2 of us near, I went for heavy and other spy for medic and we killed them both at the same time. The best play I had as a spy
Strategically speaking you would be correct, however psychology is a major factor in playing spy (and tf2 in general). If the team already has a spy stack then you are obliged to play around that. You will not change their behavior. One such play is being the sixth spy. For example, I had 5 spies on dustbowl, we've somehow capped first. We are getting clowned on after that, all the normal spies on our team were pretty much bottom of the scoreboard. So I went the sixth spy and backcapped them after red got overconfident spawncamping us. The best skill in tf2 is knowing how to play around your team, and perhaps knowing how to psyche people out. Even the dumbest fresh player will occasionally get one over a veteran simply because they are doing something the veteran(s) cannot fathom. It's like the equivalent of button mashing in fighting games.
If i join a server and see there are two spies at the bottom of the scoreboard, I now know the enemy team is looking for bad spies. They're still not going to be ready for a real one.
There's an alternate game mode called Class Wars, where each team is forced to stack one random class Spy is the weakest class there. If you get Spy on Attack, you're highly encouraged to surrender
2:56 I play a lot of heavy and I constantly pepper people I see from across the map for this exact reason. People would rather turn around and backpedal (which also slows them down) to shoot at your abusable health pool than keep running, making it really easy for Spy players to pick them.
Another trick is to just not play spy for a few lives when the enemy team becomes paranoid, and then switch back to spy when they start to forget about the frenchman.
I don't know why but always when I play I'll see there's no or one spy and go "oh I can play my main" only to look at my team after like one or two lives and go "when tf did 3 other guys change to spy!"
What I like about this the most is that as an Engie main, I always warn new players that he's really a Support labeled as a Defense class. Mentioning focus fire as a weakness is also accurate, as a sentry itself can get easily destroyed by a good scout.
Something I've noticed is when there is 1 good engie or sniper on the other team, then my team will suddenly have 4 spies to try to take care of that one person. I had this game once where I was playing as spy on upward, the only spy, we make it to the tunnel between the 1st and 2nd point, there's a sentry in there. Now normally this would be an easy fix, get an uber medic and destroy that thing, or a powerclass comes in after I sap it, but this is casual so the first option is probably better. Instead of doing that my team decided we needed 3 extra spies in order to deal with that single sentry.
It aggravates me to no end when there is a sentry nest keeping my team from advancing and someone in either chat or on mic says "We need a spy to take out that sentry nest." Cue four people switching to spy. Meanwhile I, a medic main, sits and weeps as that includes my team's only demoman.
the only time I fell for a spy disguise recently was because my teammates were goofing off standing and looking at me before running off so when I saw a demoman just standing there watching me it didnt feel out of the ordinary but something felt a bit off. When I walked by, instant stab.
it's always frustrating seeing the 3 bottom scoring spies just walked past through me instead of helping as I got gangbanged by medic-heavy combo, a soldier and a scout
Sniper has the same cascade effect too. No snipers? A good sniper picks sniper then kills the enemy, the enemy switches to sniper to counter aaaaand then that just happens until each team has a stupid amount of snipers.
I don't really play Spy a lot. The class always intrigued me but at the same time kind of intimidated me. That said I absolutely /love/ helping out spies on my team by being a distraction. My favourite way to do it is to just shoot at them while they're disguised and in view of the enemy. It helps sell their disguise /so/ much more and while everyone coming to help is focused on you, the spy can easily take them out. Super satisfying when the Spy clocks in on what's happening as well.
and the worst part, it makes actually learning spy hell because you load into a server going "I wanna play spy" and see 3 of your team are already playing spy and at the rock bottom of the scoreboard, there isn't anything worse than wanting to just chill and play you main and yet you can't find a server that will actually allow you to use it
I main spy but when I see bad spies I switch to another class because bad spies ruin the experience for good spies, by making the enemy team way too aware of the fact that there is a spy so they constantly get in your way.
i watched one of your older videos and this back to back and i gotta say , you've really improved drastically on the commentary . keep up the good work !
I think the funniest spy moment I had was in the last scream fortress event on a payload map I don't remember but we were on offense and we were losing bad, so I joked and said we should all go spy, we did, the enemy were just so damn confused, we had Dead Ringers as the front lines, gun spys taking pot shots from afar while we had 3 spies rotating for back stabs, we won
I sometimes try out spy and sometimes get this ultra instinct flow state feeling where I start doing mad backstab sprees and being a nuisance to the other team, where they become pyros and I become a french fry
I remember sussing out *_2_* spies trying to stab me in Swiftwater last while I was defending as a heavy, but then comes the third spy who manages to backstab me because I had to focus my attention on the other two before I realized there was a third lol
I was in a match recently where the enemy team was half spies, thing is, even with half of us going pyro the spies were coordinated enough to do fairly well, you turn around to attack one and another stabs you while you're distracted. Fun match.
I was on a community server once and everyone on both teams decided to go spy just for the fun of it, it was a glorious mess of a game and I actually had a lot of fun
The best example of pairing is Spy, Backburner Pyro, and Back Scatter Scout, to an extent. While a team is focused on one, the other can flank in and get the kill. There isn’t an easy way to protect your back if there’s a player in front of you and another behind you. I also think playing Backburner or Back Scatter instead of Spy (even if there’s two spies) is decently helpful, as both Pyro and Scout are much more distracting and noisy, while still fulfilling the same Pick role. Plus, both have other items and abilities in their kit that let them perform in ways that Spy can’t. Pyro can airblast to disrupt a team, or fly in from an unexpected angle with the Thermal Thruster. Scout can double jump to take routes that Spy can’t, letting him appear at a much different time than a Spy. Bonk also works as an amazing distraction tool, as you have an on-demand uber that distracts the enemy team, including sentries. Imagine if a Spy could just decloak and be invincible at any time.
THANK YOu, I switched my main role to "fill" so long ago because of this. I will not play spy if there is even 1 spy on my team, because I know that's a fast gateway to having 3-4. I've had games where I'm highest score in the lobby, 10 killstreak on spy, and then two people join my team and... also pick spy lol. Each time I switched off to a diff class when that happened, because I know what impact that's going to have on me and there's no chance they choose to switch. Not just this, but a semi-balanced team is needed to win, so being able to fill has been great (but also annoying when I go weeks without playing my fav class).
The matches are also more interesting to play if there's less spies (and snipers) and instead have a medic or two with damage classes and engineers in both teams. It's those rare casual matches where you actually have to kinda try hard to win. Not aimlessly walk around and just get kills and ignore the gamemode's objective until it's time to push the cart etc.
I genuinely wish the sapper was actually useful as a way to contribute to the team even when the enemy team's paranoia is so high that you can't get stabs or even revolver picks, because even as the only Spy, there are a lot of off-moments like those where you just can't do anything.
I think solly is the only class that can be stacked to 12 and still work, they got everything they need even banners for healing, damage and resistance, high mobility and 2 damage types.
3:17 this isn’t a valid point if at least one of the spies act as a distraction since few things take your attention quite like seeing an enemy spy behind you
Let’s not forget it just wastes other classes that would be more valuable like a medic. 3 spies, that is one less Power, Pick, or Support class, and possibly one less chance of winning.
Just remember the french resistance strategy. Having a second spy or three can sell your disguises better, but if there is already 3 then absolutely dont be the 4th one.
thst would just cause people to leave and rejoin to find a server to pick sniper or spy or any class besides its casual if there was another mode that removes random crits and stuff like that then i would not mind class limits in that one
Every single thought about spy I've shared other people called me bad at the class and dumb for. But after watching your videos you shared the same exact opinion as me on every aspect of spy and your really good at explaining them unlike me. Your videos are going to teach countless clueless spys that are trying to immitate equally clueless kunai spys how to effectively play the class. Thank you for being the amazing spy content creator you are.
4:59 you have no idea how many times ive heard someone will mic spam that french song if the enemy team has multiple spies, ive literally had a match end where someone said 'we defeated france' with that music playing.

Teams are best when you have a spread of even classes…
Except on defense last, engineer stacking is basically unkillable.
bbbbut we always we when we have 12!
I sometimes try out spy and sometimes get this ultra instinct flow state feeling where I start doing mad backstab sprees and being a nuisance to the other team, where they become pyros and I become a french fry
At on point my team became 99% demo and the enemy pyro kicked our asses
I wouldn't really call pyro a "power" class, but he's definitely a support class.
i feel like he doesn"t want me to play spy
Only if there are too many spies if there are none spies no problem
I remember sussing out *_2_* spies trying to stab me in Swiftwater last while I was defending as a heavy, but then comes the third spy who manages to backstab me because I had to focus my attention on the other two before I realized there was a third lol
I was in a match recently where the enemy team was half spies, thing is, even with half of us going pyro the spies were coordinated enough to do fairly well, you turn around to attack one and another stabs you while you're distracted. Fun match.
1:36 Soldier lore.
Made me tear
I honestly thought this would be a video about swapping off Spy to learn about the other classes, but this is funny too
I was on a community server once and everyone on both teams decided to go spy just for the fun of it, it was a glorious mess of a game and I actually had a lot of fun
Unless it’s class wars, then you have no option but to stack spies
From this, i learned to always stack spy. You make a french revolution with 3 or more.
I think this video originally intends to use reverse psychology SO WE SHOULD PICK SPY… or any class your having fun with
long story short: when playing spy act like its real life ww3 but theres lots of bugs
Spy is bad to stack. He doesn’t even have a gun!
Also is really funny to suddenly change classes for a minute just to make then lose the paranoia
a reason why he doesent only play spy on streams*
nice vid :3
7:18 Bing Soy?!
I'm playing spy and you can't stop me.
*If only every people that play TF2 could watch this.*
I once joined a harvest match where we had 9 spies and a hoovie

Imagine an entire team or spys and you just hear 12 decloaks all around you
Pls help, my mouse automatically moves to spy when we already have 3. How do i fix?
Just sap your mouse. Should fix the problem
Accept your fate and become spy main
The matches are also more interesting to play if there's less spies (and snipers) and instead have a medic or two with damage classes and engineers in both teams.
It's those rare casual matches where you actually have to kinda try hard to win. Not aimlessly walk around and just get kills and ignore the gamemode's objective until it's time to push the cart etc.
don't play spy
- every engineer/heavy mains
I genuinely wish the sapper was actually useful as a way to contribute to the team even when the enemy team's paranoia is so high that you can't get stabs or even revolver picks, because even as the only Spy, there are a lot of off-moments like those where you just can't do anything.
Not playing spy, is some playstyle... I am the best at it :)
I think solly is the only class that can be stacked to 12 and still work, they got everything they need even banners for healing, damage and resistance, high mobility and 2 damage types.
What do you mean they can't stack? Do you even realize the sheer power FRANCE HAS?!
HONONONONON!
why does your rocket launcher look like the album cover for mouth moods

@@Khanical A team of stacked engineers clears a team of stacked demos as long as the engineers are somewhat competent.
@@Awesomeness-iz3dh Stacked heavies I think compete
I swear I will start playing spy, topscore, then have to switch off bc now three more spies are running around
scout isn't a pick class, he can do much more than single target elimination
Pyro being power is debatable too, I view them as support more
@@dezgasting id say he is a hybrid
yeah, hybrid is what pyro is explicitly labeled here
12 spies is perfect strat and Jon just wants You to not know this.
now i know he said don't stack spy... but what if we did it anyways
it is always the 4rth spy that gets u
The fact this video has needed to be made says a lot about the hivemind of your typical casual tf2 gamers
I don’t even play as spy that often. I just watch your videos cuz they are so well made and interesting! :D
Opinion on the homewrecker's counterplay giving the anti-spy class the ability to counter the sapper better then the engineer himself?
And the worst part is the homewrecker liked by everybody except spies.
@@shmoking466I’ve only seen it 3 times and 2 of those times were as memes in mge but its still pretty punishing with little to no counterplay
@gekoh. ive seen it alot specially on payload. the better you are at spy the more homewreckers you'll see kinda like the razorback.
3:17 this isn’t a valid point if at least one of the spies act as a distraction since few things take your attention quite like seeing an enemy spy behind you
Above 2 is crazy
Above 2 is crazy, but exactly 2 that are talking to each other can be extremely powerful.

I once had a game with all 24 players as spy
🟦⬜️🟥 scary fact 69 there is a F R A N C E
Let’s not forget it just wastes other classes that would be more valuable like a medic. 3 spies, that is one less Power, Pick, or Support class, and possibly one less chance of winning.
Just remember the french resistance strategy. Having a second spy or three can sell your disguises better, but if there is already 3 then absolutely dont be the 4th one.
I already don't play spy, so I must be going good!
I lowkey wish Casual had class limits, at least for Sniper and Spy
thst would just cause people to leave and rejoin to find a server to pick sniper or spy or any class besides its casual if there was another mode that removes random crits and stuff like that then i would not mind class limits in that one
heavy should be support overlapped since he throws sandviches to medics keeping medics alive
You are not first, please start saying first instead of like begging.
2:38 - OK. That Spy as Heavy backstabbing you as Scout got me chuckled so good that it can make Doctor Lalve so happy.😂
You know sometimes it can be fun being the distracting soldier that helps your friendly spy get 3 backstabs in a row.
Jontohil, can I just say that I love your vids? Because I love your vids. Actually making me like playing spy!
