The show isn't meant to argue with the tangibility of the topics being discussed, the Duncan Trussel hour....he just wants these people to speak unfiltered because he is curious. It's not about questioning these people like a detective, it's about hearing about their point of view. It's just a fascinating way of going about learning about people and seeing if we can apply some of their obscure ideals to our own lives. Many of them have some pretty great stuff to stay about life, despite if we fully believe in all of what they believe. I'm agnostic and borderline atheist myself, but I find the athiest community to be kind of arrogant with that kind of thing at times.

True. Of course I don't appreciate it when people, such as many Christian people, basically force you to believe something, but I don't think the people in the show are trying to do that. They're just giving us an insight into what their spirituality and philosophy looks like. And I do enjoy a lot of what they had to teach. If you can look past the deity or mystical aspects, what they teach about life is actually quite interesting and useful in many ways. If Duncan did nothing but question these people, that's what the show would be about: the questioning, not the thought provoking topics.

Exactly! The people aren't discussing what's right and wrong, they're just sharing what they believe, and Duncan just listens, and I tbh think that's how society should be

I agree. I can definitely see how mainstream religious values can create such an allergic reaction against all things spiritual/mystical especially for those who have broken away from those traditions. We also can’t forget that Truth can be held hostage by scientific rationalism just as much as any religious dogma, or any dogmatic believes in general. If we close our minds to something simply bc it reminds us of our trauma we are no better than the ppl who forced their beliefs on us in the first place.

Yes! To truly listen to people, sometimes you just have to take their premises as given for a while. Then you can go back to seeing the world your own way. It's a much kinder way of interacting and people express their appreciation for it because it's so rare

John S. Butler the fact that Duncan’s mother died about 3 weeks after the podcast is what really gets me. It wasn’t religious, it was the philosophy of death and someone in a constant state of the edge of death. It just really hits me.

The visuals do play a role into what was being said though. A clear cut example of this was episode 5, where the prisoner was stuck in a bardo loop, which is what they talked about. The prisoner suffered from the karma of his experience and only moved out of that cycle once they woke up. It isnt literal in its relation and that's part of the charm, but because it isn't obvious most people are gonna miss this

i love some of the points you were making in it, and agreed with some of them, but one of the more beautiful things about this show is the non disputed topics. Most of the topics being discussed are by people who have dedicated their lives to being more open minded and learning more about their field of study, along with Duncan Trussell. The reason i believe that the dont offer a rebuttal, is because they are making good educated points based on years of study, and Duncan is wanting to learn more about those fields, being more inexperienced than the guest he is chatting with.

Just people sharing their experiences and their opinions on life....And I love that so much. I just wish life was like this....where you can share your beliefs without arguments, understanding both sides to a coin. I wish there was more teenagers that wanted to learn and grow from the lessons and mistakes from older adults. Accepting things the way they're not how they should be. This show gave me laughter, sadness and inner peace.

There is A LOT of symbolism in the animation you just have to pay attention and that’s why watching it multiple times gives you so much more point of view. Just the 5th episode itself has a truckload of symbolism in just the animation not including the dialogue. But also this show is a different experience for everyone because we’re all at different stages in our life and I really think that effects the way you absorb some of the messages/info. Some people will benefit a ton from this show and others won’t understand it and that’s okay. I’ve watched it a few times now and now I’m just trying to see it from other people’s perspectives to see if I missed anything els.

Honestly you might need to think about how much you depend on logic to process the world, and how that might dictate the way you analyze surrealist media. Surrealism always has a ring of truth to it, and it's often through a lens of confusion to emphasize how disorienting reality is.

i really loved the show ♡ I understand your points about being an atheist and favouring science and empicial evidence over what some of the guests talked about matter of factly (I too find it hard to believe in a higher power) but as I'm an atheist too and I wanted to share that I've found people's individual interpretation of God / religion / magick more interesting than what a lot of stuff preaches about religion - especially in a philosophical/personal discussion like the Midnight Gospel expresses. Regardless of where they are coming from, a lot of them revolve around death, existence and mindfullness which I think we can all relate/empathize/understand/learn to understand.
With the animation, i found it so beautiful and kinda fun to get lost in the surrealism. My partner found it hard to follow while watching it with me but I found it so nice to just kinda focus on one story line while hearing another - it was kinda like the A 'plot' (the podcast) was parallel with the B plot (the animation/clancy's experience) as opposed to cutting back and forth between the two like a lot of shoes do. I think it reminded me of those animatics fans make for podcasts/media which is why i loved it so much. I'm also intrigued if they're gonna continue the story with clancy... they left it kinda of open for it to be a limited series or to be continued.
And yeah, the last episode made me cry too :')
Anyway - great video ☺i'm glad to see folks like u review this show!! keep up the good work!

Yeah I'm also an atheist and really liked the show as well. I'm a big fan of surrealist/psychedelic animation, and really like hearing new ideas. I think most of the philosophies and concepts talked about can be applied to how you view your life and the universe, without having to believe in a higher power or the supernatural (except for maybe the magick thing, but it was still interesting to hear about). And the last episode was so precious and sad indeed.

The juxtaposition of the seemingly "unrelated visually-driven stories making it difficult to follow either element" seems to me to BE THE point Midnight Gospel is making.
"I often found my mind wandering between the animation and the conversation, ultimately leading to me missing most of what was happening in either part."
And isn't that the profound bare truth of life itself? We all miss most of what is really happening or matters because we are constantly being bombarded by distractions that shift our focus from our core experiences.
Hence we all find our minds wandering between the animation (the superficial aspect of life, the universe, and everything) and the conversation (the deepest most meaningful aspects and facets of life, living, and the human experience), ultimately leading to our missing most of what was happening in either part.
Anything that makes you think, wonder, and ponder is good mind fuel.

As an atheist/agnostic myself, I do take a bit of issue with your comment on the lack of discussion of atheism. The show basically exists for the purpose of exposing viewers to new beliefs they may not have encountered before: it's not putting ANY of the worldviews into question, just listening to the variety of perspectives on offer. And that said, the spiritual beliefs they talk about DO come from all over. We encounter Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Magick, and Tarot beliefs in the podcast discussion, not to mention the piles of imagery in the background from those, as well as Greek, Egyptian, and other mythologies. The first episode is a pretty-much secular discussion of drugs and their effects, with relatively little mention of supernatural topics.
Since atheism isn't a system of belief, it's unsurprising that there's no dedicated atheist episode; its only purpose would be to debate or refute the positions of the other thinkers, which would go against the peaceable spirit of the show.
And that said, just because they're discussing spiritual stuff doesn't mean they necessarily believe in anything supernatural; even in the "Magick" episode, and especially in the several Buddhism episodes, the focus is really on the characters' internal psychological states. In a sense these "spiritualities" are really just methods of doing psychology that lie outside of the modern Western paradigm. I'd say it would be a pretty naïve view to think that nobody besides educated Westerners of the past 100 years have discovered anything useful about the mind, when a far greater share of the intellectual effort in many (especially Buddhist) countries has been on understanding the mind.
Just because they come from another culture, and use different vocabulary, does not necessarily mean they come from anything irrational or unscientific. India's logical tradition predates the West's, and arguably their science was better-developed than the West's for the majority of history up until the Renaissance. This whole time, the mind was one of the main topics of discussion for Buddhists and Hindus alike; their taxonomy of the mind was deep, logical, and rigorous, and was studied by both religious and non-religious scholars.
Remember that the word "Psychology" itself means "study of the soul", and began in the West with centuries of Pagan and Christian religious thought, having only become secularized by the work of Freud and Jung and their followers. In fact, completely non-supernatural psychology is very much the historical exception, so it's unsurprising that a show *about* spirituality/psychology would have predominantly religious guests.

Certainly didn't stop Clancy :) Just buy a mic, ask around to find people who'd be down to chat, and find a site to post your series. Your audience will find you with time. Especially if you make the podcast something all your own. People appreciate unique, no matter what form its in. The Midnight Gospel in general is a pretty good indicator of that lmao.

Tbh, this is probably one of my favorite shows I’ve ever watched...BUT my mom showed me movies like Yellow Submarine, The Last Unicorn, and Heavy Metal WAAAAAAY too early, so that might just be a fucked up childhood thing. It also helps that I have ADD and my brain already goes a million miles a minute, so I absorbed both the podcasters and the cartoon at once. Mostly, I loved this show because Clancy reminds me so much of myself. I’m not as irresponsible, but I am a 25 year old stoner just barely about to graduate from college...
I relate to his desire to run from problems, to seek out mysteries so you don’t have to deal with reality. Especially the entire issue with the simulator nearly exploding because Clancy won’t deal with it, I tend to let problems sit until the last possible moment while I avoid it with other things. The mediation episode really effected me as well because it reflected how my desire to be laid back hides a lot of frustration and inner anger.
I would recommend this show to anyone who loves the wonderfully weird side of animation. My hands down favorite episode is Damien Echols’ interview, I’m not very spiritual but being able to hear someone who has gone through what he has speaking with such gentleness and inner peace really got me!

This show was made for me. I was an atheist/agnostic...around 20 yrs old i did intravenous ketamine. The experience was terrifying. During the experience i became convinced i was dead. In the experience it felt like it lasted for days but when it was over i had been out for about an hour. I was healthy and fine physically but i spent the next few hrs with my jaw hanging open for several hours....i couldn't make complete words. A few days later i hopped a bus from Buffalo to about middle coast California to try living with my father a bit. I was givin a copy of the Bardo Theodol

I find this show to be extremely strange, I need to watch it again. Last episode was so emotional, didn’t this I would cry watching a strange cartoon, but the other episodes ... I couldn’t concentrate with all the shit going around, can someone explain it, was it done purposely like she was saying, what’s up with all that gone? Sometime I didn’t want to watch just listen .

I'm starting to think that you should watch the show again with an open mind about the spirituality. They're not telling you what's true, they're giving you a perspective- many perspectives to grasp the concept that is reality. It's up to you to interpret that information, and you shouldn't feel frustrated by the information just because you yourself aren't spiritual. I was an atheist before I was a spiritual practitioner.

science... spirituality is the science of experience. We need to move from the reductionist materialistic methodology of the academical theocracy and integrate the anima that we all have whether you like it or not. Yes, the measurement of the material world brings technological wonders that we can feel and see with our senses but never forget that your mind can experience things that cannot be measured with a ruler.

My only complaint about The Midnight Gospel is that, in some episodes, what is happening onscreen (the plot of the episode) is so absurd and bizarre, that it takes you away from the actual podcast. Aside from that, I really enjoyed it.

The thing about your "Science" and "reasoning" is, it _Ignores_ the science behind the Spiritual Realm in favor of its reductionist theories.
The issue with reductionism is you're not actually analyzing it for what it is, you're simply reducing it to its simplest form. Atheism is rarely a position one finds themselves in after a lot of introspection but rather a default position hoisted onto most of us because of a myopic teaching regimen that promotes Masculine thinking patterns over a whole-brain thinking.
The Right side of the Brain is the Feminine half but gets ignored/overlooked entirely in favor of the Reductionist "Hard Logic" Left half, which is our masculine selves/energy.
I'm not here to tell you you're wrong about your Theological viewpoint, just that if you want a counterpoint to it from the science perspective, please by all means bring someone on who is willing to actually DISCUSS said topics without doing, as you are doing, and dismissing them on the surface of it as "Woowoo". Not to say you're necessarily using that term, but I can feel the emotional dismissal in your presentation of it. Of course they accept it as True and Real, we've actually STUDIED IT FOR OURSELVES. Without needing an Authority figure to comes from on high and bless us all with the "Magic of Science" which gives you The Big Bang Theory and says "Give us this one Miracle and we'll explain the rest."
Which really, is no different than the position of most Religions. Scientism is the Modern Variant of Religiosity.
What infuriates me when I hear a self avowed Atheist is hearing them go on endlessly about "Science" without ever once investigating the Science behind Spirituality. Russian Scientists have demonstrated that Life will create itself within Hermetically sealed Jars. The Universe Produces Life as a natural function of it's existence. There are countless threads of evidence in Nature to discover the Truth of our Universe, Scientism is one of the weakest forms we have, despite how strongly we cling to it.
The Universe clings to Novelty, the corner stone of Science is 100% Reproduceability, but the issue in that lies in the nature of how our Thoughts, our Mind, our desires and our Expectations affect the end result of an experiment. Science believes those factors are 100% irrelevant and so _never_ accounts for those as variables. The Lunacy of which is palpable. The fact that some of the most prominent scientific theories are _literally_ called "Dogma" should be questioned by most of you and yet most of you self avow yourselves as Atheist.
    I don't understand y'all one lick.

Thanks for making this! Since the show is so fresh, any commentary on it I can find is appreciated. I'm glad you mentioned your atheism too, and how that affected your experience with the show - I took the talk of higher powers for granted, but you're right, it is an assumed force here.
I was raised evangelical, right-wing Christian, which tends to be very strict and ultimately very shallow; when I had the freedom to explore OUTSIDE of that (it turns out, very small) bubble, I found so much beautiful thinking and beautiful Christian theology through the ages. The Midnight Gospel also gave me a tour of beautiful thinking and made me want to approach and embrace the concept of death and loss, but with a brave spirit. What other cartoon has done that for me?

This is an amazing show no matter who you are, it helped me open my eyes and realize the world around me. It’s almost like meditation. Hilarious meditation. Not only did it help open my eyes and see the bigger picture, but it also helped me Reject False Icons, a Gorillaz reference. It showed me that we are a celebrity run world and that we should start thinking for ourselves. It talks deep and realize that whatever small issue we have, it is very insignificant compared to a lot more than that.

Hear me out.....have to watch high....its like watching 4 episode in one. Sober i had to see the episodes over and over but high ( saw 1,2, and 3) dang it was incredible i could see the pod cast.could see them just talking could see the animation and would snap out of it when something they where talking about would actually happen in the show. Like it was saying hey remember yes this doesn't make sense but dose as well. Like when the fish was trying to bargain for cats it all became one show again then the pod cast began again and boom 4 shows.

Great video, and I agree for the most part, except everything shown was related to what was being said. It is true you get lost in one or the other when the detail and depth of both spike, but they were vaguely related.
The elephants things about to die and a nation of anarchy as they spoke of death, his mother and him aging and taking care of each other as they tackled death and family care and concerns, especially clancey starting as a baby because thats where their ocnversation began. The talk with death i felt tried a little too hard to be direct with the visual relation and just ended up having a lot of weird related side stories, while i feel the fish bowl head guy had the most unrelated visual to conversation relation.
Idk tell me what you think but for the most part the conversations aligned with the topics is what im saying
