I feel the animation actually holds relevance to the discussions being had, just not always so directly, like the animation in the prisoner episode being the metaphor for the rebirth cycle until enlightenment
I felt like screaming this when he said that. Theres a slightly hidden theme to the animations story that ties to the commentary over it. Like Trudy and Clancy talking about forgiveness and the story being about Trudy's path to forgiveness ( which kills the butt demon dude) Everythings connected man and the animators did an amazing job I've never seen something that connected with me so hard before.
I agree, Eg in the zombie episode the guest of the podcast discusses that there's no such thing as good drugs and bad drugs, it's the circumstance that makes it good or bad. Then later in the episode this is reflected in the zombie antidote.
Having all of those things surrounding the people in the "podcast" is literally the shows concept, one of the biggest comedic points of the whole show is that these people are having a conversation while all of this crazy shit unfolds in front of them.
Yeah, there's literally one episode that talked about not being able to keep up with what others are saying while you're in a conversation because your mind is easily distracted.
Wait a sec, I’m pretty sure there is a very major plot concerning Clancy and his multiverse simulator and the many things Clancy deals with when he’s not in his simulator, like when it shows that he’s not a very responsible person and only goes into the simulators to escape the pressures of real life. And we also can’t forget what happened with one of Clancy’s fans who was given ice cream by Clancy in episode 3, only for the fan to be beaten by his father for the fact that he didn’t really allow ice cream in the house, and then the father started tracking down Clancy to further punish his son, which turned into a whole thing by the end of it
Don't forget about Clancy's estranged sister. Though she's only mentioned twice, it seems to have struck a chord with the character emotionally. This show warrants a continuity, I just think it needs to be handled in such a way that it supports the podcast first and foremost.
I love how they get from ancient templar orders to capitalism to the cycle of birth and death seemingly at pure random. That season finale is straight up 11/10 and one of the best animated episodes of all time.
Looking everywhere for this comment!!!!!Totally agree... I feel like these guys are trying to hard to compare it to something or other animations but its totally and insanely unique....nothing like it.
I personally enjoyed the show and found their conversations were hard to keep track of sometimes as it felt like they were stoned and waffling the whole time but there were many moments when what they were saying hit hard and was quite relatable
In my opinion, the reason the sound effects are so important is because of what the show is trying to say with meditation (you just need to be in the moment and block out distractions) but maybe that's me looking too far into it
I see, good point sir. The first thing we notice is that the protagonist, Clancy, is having a tête-à-tête, uncovering new philosophies and perspectives with his recent acquaintances while not paying any attention to the surroundings and distractions, which I think proves your point
This is indeed what is going on. If you actually take in what they are saying in episode 3 this would be clear to most. Including the ignorant creator of this video.
I was just thinking about how perfect it is for me. I love podcasts but I need something for my eyes to do so I usually have to listen to them when going to sleep which makes me miss everything. This is a great solution for that
I have ADHD too and i thought maybe that's why the show annoyed me. i wanted to follow the conversation, but i was way more distracted by the visuals. loved the visuals, found the conversations boring/annoying. followed the dialogue a bit better in episode 2 and the last episode, as he said
yea it kinda only works for us ppl.i think adhd is damaging in a lot of aspects, but it does train your ability to keep track on lots of information at once quite a bit
I think the fact, that the animation isn’t really reflecting the dialogue, is a very smart and innovative move. The whole thing makes it very trippy. You can’t focus on both things, but you really want to and I don’t think that this is a bad thing. For me that means, that I can rewatch the show over and over again and still finding new things in dialogue and animation :)
I love the low frame rate. I didn’t even step outside of the show enough to realize that is what that is. To me the show just looks like it is in slow motion but hard to keep up with. Now I see that’s literally a low frame rate. Does not detract though. Definitely adds to the realistic feel, given how insane this show is. It still feels as real as a documentary. . . Certainly more real than tiger king.
I believe that the fact that the animation and dialog compete give the series great rewatch value. Ive seen the first few episodes at least 4 times. The first time, I try to watch it under the influence so I can enjoy the animation, then I focus on what they have to say. It's very great all the way through. I love this show. I'm honestly quite sad and feel distressed at the fact that I might not survive until the release of the next season. Truly fantastic series that helped me open my eyes to the idea of death and the release of such a heavy weight. Life is beautiful, why can't we all live in the present and enjoy each other?
If you die before the next season, you'll have access to it well before the rest of us, that is if you decide to watch it rather than drift endlessly through the cosmo's at lightspeed, or if you get stuck in a bardo loop. Any way, wish you luck in this life and the next homie.
I always enjoyed the amount of things going on while their talking. It’s makes it feel like he’s actually interviewing them while their doing whatever they were planning to do in their world since Clancy just appeared literally out of no where for them. They bring him along with their journey and make it feel like they are not hostile creatures that Attack him half way through their interview. It makes it feels like their actually having a conversation in that world rather than it’s a podcast that is covered by animation.
I never put the link together, but it does make so much sense. Why the zombies are all having a great time and why the president changes his mind on drugs after having become a "zombie" himself
It's just about drugs in general, and more specifically psychedelics. The idea is that people live their entire lives in fear of something because we've been told it's bad. The mayor lives in a zombie wasteland until he sees it from the other side.
@@skeletonheads exactly that, and the fact that his last words were a different perspective on drugs than he started out with kind of proves it. Let alone the euphoria of being a "zombie"
I think the "clutter" for the show is more a product of the audience they were shooting for. Stoners, and I think it works. I've watched it high as a kite and once again sober and I was thoroughly entertained each time. I was either too high to pay attention to the visuals or too high to pay attention to the existential concept they spoke about. The pilot is about the legalization of drugs, the show released on 4/20, and the art is simple but dense with humor and symbolism. I loved it from beginning to end.
This this this! I just finished the 8 episodes and for each was sitting pretty with Mary Jane, over the week. Cannot wait to watch it again Sober, all 8 in a row straight. The show was PERFECT and the last episode had me balling because a friend had told me before hand about his mom. Lost my Mother awhile back and this HIT DEEP!
As someone who grew up with Adventure Time, this cartoon is a visual acid trip experience. The colorful animation and the art style looks like a modernized version of _Yellow Submarine._
Yeah, there were a couple of episodes in Adventure Time where the animation and message was similar to Midnight Gospel. They were at the borderline with some episodes but I suppose they were allowed to if there was no blood or curse words. But the visuals were pretty trippy in those specials.
This show is one of the most mature and spiritually moving things I've ever seen. The dialogue you hear is so deep, and emotionally jarring. I just watched all 8 episodes with some family. I literally started crying tears of euphoria while I was driving home. It's beautiful.
xImBeaST12321x I’ve seen every episode and honestly it’s just disappointing to me. The concepts they touch on are done so carelessly and Clancy doesn’t make enough effort to dig deeper. Having Hinduism explained by a guy who thinks he knows everything because he had an orgy while on DMT doesn’t vibe with me. Quite frankly I don’t like the show.
@@topramen7431 😂😂😂well the point of the show isn't to explore Hinduism, but I think it does it enough to allow someone like me, who could care less about it, to now be openminded to it. Also, Duncan Trussel has studied and spoken with some of the biggest Hindu/Buddhist Guru's of today, he's been on Podcasts with them too. He also isn't a preacher, the only time he brings it up really is in the context of, "hey, what your talking about and referring to, there is actually an old Hindu concept of it. It goes like this..........". And its funny you say they touch on them carelessly lol from my perspective they touched upon these subjects more then any other cartoon or even podcasts I've seen, but at the same time I haven't really watched cartoons or podcasts that talk about how to cope with the reality of death or the manifestation of magic in the 21st century
It really is a 'you love it or you hate it' show. I think that even if you dislike it however, it's hard not to appreciate how inventive and refreshing it is.
I'd say : Perfect episodes : 4 and 8 Great cohesion talking/animation : 2 and 7 I had to watch twice, watching only THEN listening : 1 and 5 Animation is great but WTF are they saying : 3 That was okay I guess : 6
Oh the third one just need some context, check out the incident of the west memphis three and some basic idea of magic in the west, especially alister cowley. Afterwards, it should be a great rewatch
@@omium4917 Yeah I'm french so I tried to do some research but that's quite large and obscure for me. But I'll give it another try, that's for sure, it seems interesting for sure.
@@omium4917 The thing is the context is not clarified in the episode, they start like "I practice Magic" and you're like "wôt ?!" and the first time I saw that I was very confused (even if the ending of this one is great)
5 is a great episode. It really relates to what they say, cause DMX can cause near death experiences, out of body experiences or it let you reach "the next level" of consciousness. It has a reason to be called the strongest psychedelicum you can get.
I feel like having all this crazy, trippy stuff happen while they are talking to be the entire point, as evidence in the first episode and medieval episode, where while there is danger in the event the humor comes from the very fact that the event isn't being much referenced by the characters. And I just have to say, the final episode is just beautiful, it had me feeling like I was gonna cry. I connected with Clancy and the way he interacted with those around him, and honestly didn't mind when the characters referred to him as his real name, it was all just a part of this great experience, which I feel is the true lesson of the show, what different experiences can do to people and how those go about changing them.
I would love if theyd release everything thats being said in the interviews from the show into a podcast on spotify! Because i have problems listening and watching at the same time. But....wow, netflix really did it with this one. Its so mature and so unbelievably interesting, also a real eye opener. I hope they release a second season!!
This is the best advice to give before watching this, gotta have an open mind and clairvoyance to understand the levels that are being represented all at once. Only while under the influence can you enjoy the distractions and still find a common thread between what is said, and what is seen. I find it very interesting while partaking in God's green gold(weed).
I disagree. I definitely will rewatch the show under influence but to be frank. Watching it sober and paying attention to both I felt like under influence while being sober.
I think it depends on the person. I like watching/listening to stuff like this while high but my BF doesn't do any kinda substances and he loved this show just as much as I did.
okay the point of the visual chaos and audio clutter is actually special techniques used in hypnotherapy. repeating sounds or imagery will put you in a meditative state, making it feel like a lot less time has passed than what has. it’s really cool
I understand where your coming from but I love the idea of people blowing through a zombie apocalypse while having a casual conversation about legalization.
I'm hesitant to give anything with pendalton a chance cuz as soon as he has to stay working a little hard he bails. So the show might be good for a few seasons, but if it gets popular he'll probably just bail again and let people parade the corpse around. He's a creative guy for sure, but after how he fumbled adventure time I'm just skeptical if he can actually run a show from beginning to end. But if it's honestly just the 8 episodes or so maybe he should just stick to a format like that so it works with him instead of against him
That doesn't sound like what any normal person would do with a big franchise in their hands, usually it's them not having enough drive in comparison to the fans want for the series. Everyone says podcasts make for less stressful script writing, so I'm sure a load like that being taken off would be good for the creators. Although, take it with a grain of salt, I don't know what happened to the creators of adventure time and how they acted with that show in their laters parts.
@@Iwatoda_Dorm basically when the show got popular and episodes started getting higher demand for better quality and such he kinda bailed on the whole thing and stopped trying or caring and letting other people take creative control. But like I said after what I've read about him I'm just skeptical
@@mrnukes797 yeah I actually totally forgot about that show because he dumped it for another. Lol doesn't matter in animation today it doesn't matter if you can hardly work, or pitch an idea and see it through until the end, quit half way through and hire your mostly inexperienced friends to finish your job while you kinda half ass supervise and not give a fuck, he'll get a million more chances, cuz he knows the right people and went to the right school. I'm gonna watch this show, but I don't have high hopes of expectations for anything ward does anymore.
Idk if this is right but I had a lot of takeaways, first I think the podcast stuff works because the irony was that they can talk about this stuff through all these distractions and mayhems happening around them. In a way it alludes to Clancy’s ability to block things out as he focused on the conversation at hand is similar to how he only really focuses on things that take him out of the reality of what’s happening around him, he escapes reality with the simulator and in a way that is a message to drugs users too. It’s ok to have experiences and have fun but in moderation, you can’t use other things to enter a fantasy land or escape reality you can’t simulate through life and expect life to go well you have be able to face the real world, I’m a big stoner so as I watched I was entertained but moved too. Especially episode 5 talking about being a prisoner in your own prison I think all of us feel that way and in general the concept of just letting go and accepting where you are in life and trying to make the most of that and in terms of death it’ll come for you eventually so live a life of significance and embrace when the time comes because if you live correctly and enjoy yourself (in moderation) and follow a righteous path in the world you have nothing to fear at the end of the day when it’s over its over and don’t under value the joy of existence seeing the world through the eyes you see it through. In all it’s a mind and spiritual trip as if you watch it to watch it especially high or on acid or whatever it’s an adventure and entertaining if you watch it to listen and take in the conversations it’s a spiritual awakening, you start to realize the true purpose of existing and it’s to just enjoy the simple fact you exist don’t think about 10 years ago or 10 years down the road think about the moment you’re in and enjoy it and when the time comes for you to die you won’t worry or fear it you’ll be at piece. Idk that’s my big takeaway from all this
When you were saying he goes back to his world you forgot to mention the fact that he gets a artifact each episode and yes I am posting without watching the next 7 minutes of the video.
I gave the show a shot and really liked the conversation for the first episode it gave me Superjail vibes with the violence. But then I watched the next 3 episodes and it just didn't match up or get better so i folded.
What the guy doesn’t get about the dialogue and the stuff happening around the character is intentional. It’s not that it’s competing for the audience’s attention. It’s the fact that the characters are having a conversation while crazy sh*t is happening around them
@@sammyr6911 "It’s the fact that the characters are having a conversation while crazy sh*t is happening around them" does not prove "It’s not that it’s competing for the audience’s attention". Those things aren't mutually exclusive. "What the guy doesn’t get about the dialogue and the stuff happening around the character is intentional" - Something being intentional doesn't inherently make it good.
Having so many things happen at one time is a test for your concentration, but realistically they warned you multiple times you should be meditating. Meditating helps your focus, and in the grand scheme of things you find connections between the things you might not have found possible to connect to. This show is worth multiple play throughs, but Duncan has each full (longer) interview on his podcast, so try to enjoy how each concept of story does actually relate to the visuals at hand. It really opens up when you look a littler harder.
I am pretty sure the disconnect between the audio and visual is there to show Clancy's ignorance of everything going around him. And there's more of a connection with the final episode with his mother as he starts paying attention.
I remember listening to the DT: family hour with his mom several years back and not months later she had passed and watching the MG ep revisiting that was a real emotional treat explaining the loss and how it felt. great show. DT is a good dude. ALL the BEST.
@Spit Dragon I actually started the series like the night before I saw this video up but had to finish the last episode so I wouldn't get spoiled on it lmao
I cant say anything else but, I agree. The talks are really interesting, so much so I wanna go find his podcast. But the animation and the plot distracts you from it. Episode 8 really was beautiful, but they try to put jokes in the end, and it totally killed the vibe of the episode
Tbh this show helped me alot, I had a friend commit suicide some time ago and it was really hard on me I was always told that it gets better with time and it kind of did but I was still grieving over him and watching the show kind of helped open my eyes out more to the concept of death and it just really helped me.
Episode 1 was about drugs and how certain situations call for some drugs and others just cause harm and how the antidote for the zombies works in some situations while getting others killed is different situations.
I think the point of the show is the comedic contrast between the crazy shit happening on screen, and the deep discussions transpiring between the main characters. i'm not sure about everyone else, but i loved this, and this is an aspect of comedy that should be used more often.
I looked it up and thought the concept was pretty interesting. I've seen animated interviews before, but never really in full stop-motion produced by Aardman nonetheless.
I started the show while i was inebriated and i loved it😂..the conversations they had were perfect for me in that mindset. Going to give it a second watch with a clear head..will update you guys if my feelings change☺️
I really enjoyed how the visuals and the discussions were almost equally and competitively engrossing. There is so much put into this show that it is one of the few that I would say is worth repeat viewings.
I get what you're saying about the animation not complimenting the dialogue, but hear me out. For starters I didn't know these were podcasts used in another show and I think many people with me. What I did notice however was that all the dialogue was about meditation in some way, that seems to be the main subject of this show: Meditation and mindfulness. Okay so follow me on this one, meditation and mindfulness are foremost used to be in the here and now and accepting the things that are happening. During the dialogue of Midnight Gospel many things are happening in the animation aka are happening around and to Clancy and his guests. But Clancy and his guests are barely paying attention to these things that are happening and you wanna know why I think that is? Because they're seeing it, they're accepting it and that gives them a clear enough mind to stay focused on what the other is saying for almost the entire episode (with some exceptions). In summary, I believe the animation combined with the dialogue is used as a representation of what being mindful is. I'm a meditator myself, so letting my surrounding be as it is and only focussing on what I want is more easy for me. While watching the show, in episode 1, my mind kept drifting away by all the zombies on screen and I didn't hear most of the beginning of the podcast. But when I started to acknowledge the surrounding of Midnight Gospel and payed no more attention to it than that, I could focus on the dialogue way better than first and let me tell you, I've experienced the entire show on a whole different level. So could it be that Midnight Gospel is training the viewer in meditation and mindfulness throughout the episodes? That you can only listen to the dialogue if you pay little attention to what's happening on screen?
I just loved the show so much, at first 2-3 episodes I couldn't keep up both what was going on screen and the podcast part but as the show progressed I felt more and more connected to it and started understanding. And felt like in the final episode everything was synced up and in harmony.
I can see what you mean, there were times I felt the dialogue didn’t match. However, have you ever tried to discuss these topics with people who are JUST starting to hear or think about them? It’s extremely difficult to understand the vast nature of spirituality and workings through western cultures stigmatized view on such things. It challenges what is taught, it can come off as forcing a perception and people shut off. That is purely my opinion based on personal experience. It takes way more time to grasp these concepts that were made into a short series. Furthermore, American’s want information as quick and clear with no time to consider patience. We are raised to rush, the faster you comply information the easier things become to function in the society. Enlightenment isn’t a title anyone living can fully achieve, it’s a constant process through life and self reflection. Just as happiness is not the destination in life, happiness is the path to the finish line. Ultimately, death is there waiting for us all. However, the question remains, will you live your whole life in fear and misery to arrive the end just the same? Or, will you arrive knowing you chose a path that was bright and arrive pleased to accept the end knowing your heart is full? It’s up to you.
I love this show so much. so I have to argue with you, even if it's hard to find, the dialogue does relate to the visuals and events in some way. in the first episode, they come to the conclusion that drugs aren't bad just the situation, and the cure for the zombies, a drug, works in some situations and not in others. I'm not sure exactly why they chose to blend the line between clancy and duncan, maybe just as a way of making a parrallel of his parents death. but I still love this series so much and understand that it's not for eveyone.
i watched this show and have to say it was interesting but i can't help but fell it's a bit pretentious , since we see the kind of person Clancy is it's hard to really take him seriously
@Spit Dragon If i may use some of the logic from the show => What is judging ? We compare one experience with another similar one and decide which one is better and more worth our time , but if art is subjective then it's different for everyone so it's pointless to judge , yadda yadda something deep the whole show feels like two people are smoking weed and talking while the artist took LSD
Couldn't disagree more. If you know Duncan, you'd know how genuine a person the guy is. Whatever "pretentiousness" you got off of it is all projection. Or perhaps, just a failed delivery on the show's part. But the show itself and the people who worked on it are very genuine people, that are just presenting these ideas the best they can.
@@X3MAntics but i didn't know Duncan and after looking into it he does seem like a great guy , I feel Clancy isn't really a good character . Clancy is like 2 people in 1 , the one person that does the interview (Duncan) who tries to understand life and the deeper meaning , and the Clancy outside the simulator who is lazy, stupid and even steals , the two versions don't match . The other problem that many other shows in the late have is world building.
Absolutely recommend to visit the series for a second time! I watched it once while observing what happened in the animation and twice while I paid attention to their conversation. The second round was far easier to capture the theme of the episode. And at the same time I could also get some correlation between the seemly random things in the background with the conversation and that make this a more thoughtful experience. (Ex: the zombie vs the legalization of weed in the 1st ep is actually the same since one could only get the ectasy stage through taking the drugs or becoming a zombie 😂) I feel so stressful for not explaining properly but this is a really really amazing series and so perfect for a chaotic period like now. (Please forgive me because English is not my first language 😂) I'd love to see a second season in the near future!!!💖
I've watched almost all of this show, and I gotta say I enjoy it. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you have interest in the kinds of subjects Duncan Trussel discusses, stuff like meditation, spirituality, psychedelia, death, etc. it's worth a watch. My personal favourite episode so far is the prison episode, where the discussion is on Buddhism and the concept of Samsara (the endless cycle of suffering, death and rebirth that is human life), while tagging along with a prison inmate attempting a breakout where every time he dies he returns to the starting point, but with an awareness of how things will go, and becomes less impulsive and violent with every attempt. I was genuinely rooting for this inmate to escape, and interested in their discussion. To me that was the perfect blending of the podcast and the narrative. I also liked the episode where he meets Death and they discuss the so-called 'Death Industrial Complex' while exploring the underworld, that was clever, and Death was pretty funny. But yeah, the problem is with the narrative bits. Sometimes the discussions become so interesting that I got genuinely frustrated when they went back to the narrative, I'd be like "Aww man really? I don't care about this mission they're on or the Ice Cream, get back to discussing ceremonial magick!" So yeah, definitely not for everyone, but well worth a watch. It's only 8 episodes long so even if you hate it it's less than an afternoon wasted.
I might have been reading into it too much, but I felt like the background noise/visuals were there to representent more how our minds work. Like along with all the ideas in the conversations theres the outside world and our own minds working against us.
I just recently lost one of my closest childhood friends a couple weeks ago and the last episode got me completely. I was watching the show with my girlfriend (I don’t smoke or anything but she does so I enjoy the themes, she enjoys the visuals, win-win.) and we’d gotten through nearly the whole season to the final episode. I was watching it and thinking about my current situation nearly the whole time, but just about managing to keep it down, but once Clancy’s mom says “I’ll still love you always” or something along those lines while vanishing into the black hole I broke. I was just overtaken with emotion, and I broke down crying right then and there. This show has some clutter and random visuals, but if nothing else watch the final episode. It’s a myriad of the walk through life and if you’ve ever lost a loved one, it will hit you especially hard. It’s truly a beautiful piece of animation and story telling, and knowing the background now it’s even more touching. Anyways though, thank you Steve for this, I really enjoy your videos and commentary on the way to work sometimes so keep up the good work! :)
The plot of the episode is always based around the content of the interview, just sometimes its looser than others; e.g. I'm pretty confident that the zombie plague in episode 2 is intentionally an analogue for the political notion of a drug epidemic, that comparison being played on throughout the episode (hence "it feels good to be a zombie"). Stuff like this is what gives the show so much re-watch value imho.
It should be known that this isn’t Duncan’s old podcast. The Duncan Trussell Family Hour is still very much going. I highly recommend checking it out. A lot of gems to find there.
I personally like the animation and the dialogue, being separate I can rewatch the show and focus on different parts through different watches. First the audio then the animation, and then both together and also while stoned I love it. I’m even started listening to the podcast
Me and my bf really love shows like this. This time, however, he was much more interested then I was. After watching 2 episodes or so, I quit, and I'm glad to see you felt the same way I did about it! We would love if you could review Over the Garden Wall. It's pretty dark and quick and AMAZING with great voice actors like Elijah Wood and Christopher Lloyd.
I looooved creature comforts even tho I couldn't understand a lot of it because I was a little kid. When I was sick and stayed home from school, I waited for CC to come on and me and my mom would laugh and laugh together. Such nostalgia ❤
I have heard that a lot of people really like this show. Personally I just really can’t get into it. It might be the fact that I‘m just not very huge on podcasts or that I‘d be way more interested in the world around them than what they are discussing. I do have to say I love both voice acting and animation. It’s unfortunate that I can‘t enjoy the midnight gospel. When watching I just feel my brain shutting off from the overload of information I don’t really care about. It just really isn’t for me and I tried getting into it many times. I stopped during the middle of episode 4, I think. It just isn’t for me.
I remember watching this and doing embroidery and I just loved this show. The last episode had me in tears cause I know what it's like to have a parent with cancer. It sucks and every moment counts. This show while making me very sad at times, also made me feel so relax. I recommend everyone watch it from the first episode. The art is beautiful and the only thing I'd change is that there is only I episodes. Puts u in a headspace and really makes you think. This show us just beautiful
Have you heard of In this Corner of the World? Its similar to grave of the fireflies and a bit less depressing and sad but still hits those pretty hard at parts.
I have a short attention span so if I ever listened to something with just the voices I’d just zone out and not hear a word of what they’re saying, I like the animation because it captivated me and helps me focus on what I want to listen to. I’m also very interested in different peoples opinions and thought processes since I’m working to be a psychologist
I found the competition between the interview and action the most charming. I liked how little fucks they seem to give once they get engrossed in their discussion, like it's somehow so profound that nothing else matters.
Can I make an odd recommendation? It's not exactly animated but it's interesting. It's the 5th episode of Dimension 404, which is a sci-fi anthology series. The fifth episode is much darker and has some tear gerking moments. It's on Now TV Is it perfect? Hell no Is it an excellent example of character work? Hell yes!
The animation/whats happening around the characters perfectly normal conversation gets trippy and in the first episodes had almost nothing to do with the conversation but there's beauty in that
I sat and watched this with my girl. 1 episode each night. 8 nights in a row. It's beautiful to understand the words and watch the visuals play out in the manner they do. Of course it's hard to follow sometimes but if you truly want to listen and watch, it's possible and I believe everyone who gives a real shit about anything in this world should watch and understand episode 8. I really felt it, and that's not something a show can do for me all the time. It's not watching a TV show with this series. It really is an experience. And it's one that I'm glad I had.
Wow, the narrator doesn’t quite get it... the metaphors stack on top of each other in earlier episodes to simulate the complexity and dark deep seeded physiological mindfucks in real life that pull you away from what really matters... it’s is, dare I say, the most brilliant show ever created... and I’m not just exaggerating
I think this is a fair asessment. There's so much going on in each episode (esp when high) it's hard to take in the dialogue or appreciate the visuals. I think it's unique as a show i that it's inherently unbindgable, the convos are so deep and the visuals lively that you don't want to watch it in one go but take a break between each episode and take it in. I think it's also very re-watchable too, since there's so much to take in. I'm looking forward to watching and re-watching more episodes. More than anything I'm glad there's something creative and totally new out there than the same shit on netflix. I always love a show expanding the creative limits of the medium!
never was a fan of the Ward style of art, that created an entire generation of noodle arm sausage face animated imitators and I personally hate him for starting that trend we now refer to as the "Calarts" style
One Calarts is a dumb term that can mean a blanket term of artstyles(Ive met people who called Samurai Jack Cal Arts) two Adventure Time doesnt even look like most modern cartoons
For me this show hits me hard and deep. For a person that had an ego that and experienced it with some hallucinogenics, i could not only understand every single episode, all of them made me cry at some point. Because they say about, life, acceptation, about ego. Putting aside the comic fact, i wasn't even looking too much at the cartoon itself, but i was really into the discussion and into the narrative... This is the best animation I've ever seen, never felt so touched with it. The last episode... For someone that had to accept death somehow will understand what I'm talking about. Every episode is singular but at the same time every are connected somehow.
the mouse of silver is the episode got me hooked on the entire series and the creator's podcast: duncan trussell family hour. when the mother encourages to cry when dealing with heartbreak, it was the most emotional moment i had, and the best suggestion i have heard.
For me the prison episode was the best one. Not only was it interviewing a person I already knew about and respected (occultist and mystic Jason Louv), but the theme of the interview (Buddhism and reincarnation) and the prison narrative (An inmate attempting to escape and being reborn and starting again every time he is killed, learning to be less violent each time) tied together nicely. And the song the prisoner sings at the end when their tongue grows back is nothing short of beautiful.
I like that the conversation and animation distract from each other . Actually gave me a reason to watch multiple times and catch things I didn't catch before. This show is a masterpiece to the open minded.
I was going through pretty bad times around the time when I watched it and it helped my mental health a great deal. It is hard to explain how much I loved this show. It was fresh as an idea, wholesome and relatable "stories" or more like topics. And I just love the fact that they gave Clancy a bag so cosplayers can carry their stuff around conventions more easily X'D Edit: The show is already showing(lol) so many things at a time that it already requires a couple re-watch to catch all detail at it's current framerate.
I feel as though the animation style actually fits because, similar to when you're tripping, you can have a lot of introspection while seeing and experiencing crazy shit. You're getting these weird life lessons while also seeing things from funny to borderline terrifying. I feel like this makes the show one of the most accurate portrayals in media on what it's like to trip
I got a vibe that the show made a lot of things happen at the same time (the animation and the dialog "competing") fully on purpose. It reflects our reality of not being able to do a lot of things at the same time and having to choose one to focus rather than another, depending on the moment. And I guess this can be linked with the fact that in a lot of the episodes the subject of mindfulness is brought up to the discussion. So I guess they did this show so "messy" to make the viewers have to go back and watch it more than once, and each time you watch it, you get more and more things, and the subjects can become a lot deeper than you initially realized. I just thought it was a brilliant show, and I definitely recommend it to everyone
I dont know under how many videos of this show I commented but I dont seem to get tired to do so. I love this show! Have seen the season maybe 20 times already and everytime I discover new details. And of course episode 8... damn no matter how many times I watch this when the point comes where Duncan asks "theres no way to stop the heart from breaking so what do you do against all that heartbreak?" And his mom simply answers with "You cry..." My own tears burst out of me before the animation on screen shows Clancy's tears... just like an waterfall.... and after that I always feel like a few Kilos fell off my chest. I hope they get to do another season!!!
I just finished watching episode 8, hell I paused the video to prevent spoilers and came back to watch the end after i saw it. Whether intentional or not the more zany and comedic moments of the show really help to cement episode 8 as something really heavy and beautiful. The best way to introduce tragedy is to shroud it in comedy. Wouldn’t change a thing about the show it was wonderful.
I started crying as soon as I read the description for the final episode. I was sobbing through the whole thing lmao and I don’t cry at things easily at all
I feel the animation actually holds relevance to the discussions being had, just not always so directly, like the animation in the prisoner episode being the metaphor for the rebirth cycle until enlightenment
I felt like screaming this when he said that. Theres a slightly hidden theme to the animations story that ties to the commentary over it. Like Trudy and Clancy talking about forgiveness and the story being about Trudy's path to forgiveness ( which kills the butt demon dude)
Everythings connected man and the animators did an amazing job I've never seen something that connected with me so hard before.
And the zombie infection being akin to being on hallucinogenics.
and the zombies could be in relevance to their elevator metaphor seeing how they show turning into a zombie gives them the ultimate euphoria.
I agree, Eg in the zombie episode the guest of the podcast discusses that there's no such thing as good drugs and bad drugs, it's the circumstance that makes it good or bad. Then later in the episode this is reflected in the zombie antidote.
That episode is fantastic, first episode I watched
Having all of those things surrounding the people in the "podcast" is literally the shows concept, one of the biggest comedic points of the whole show is that these people are having a conversation while all of this crazy shit unfolds in front of them.
This ^
Yeah, there's literally one episode that talked about not being able to keep up with what others are saying while you're in a conversation because your mind is easily distracted.
Totally agree
Reminds me of animated gameplays (stuff like oney plays animated)
And that doesn't work
Wait a sec, I’m pretty sure there is a very major plot concerning Clancy and his multiverse simulator and the many things Clancy deals with when he’s not in his simulator, like when it shows that he’s not a very responsible person and only goes into the simulators to escape the pressures of real life. And we also can’t forget what happened with one of Clancy’s fans who was given ice cream by Clancy in episode 3, only for the fan to be beaten by his father for the fact that he didn’t really allow ice cream in the house, and then the father started tracking down Clancy to further punish his son, which turned into a whole thing by the end of it
The plot in the background does do a good job of juxtaposing the irony of using drugs to gain spiritual insight.
Don't forget about Clancy's estranged sister. Though she's only mentioned twice, it seems to have struck a chord with the character emotionally. This show warrants a continuity, I just think it needs to be handled in such a way that it supports the podcast first and foremost.
Most importantly. Ya gotta pay attention to the shoes

You definitely have to watch the show twice at some points. Once while wearing a blindfold lol
exactly, I think the people that will most understand what happens sometimes are those who watched the original cast
I love how they get from ancient templar orders to capitalism to the cycle of birth and death seemingly at pure random. That season finale is straight up 11/10 and one of the best animated episodes of all time.

I personally enjoyed the show and found their conversations were hard to keep track of sometimes as it felt like they were stoned and waffling the whole time but there were many moments when what they were saying hit hard and was quite relatable
“Anger is a sweet flower with butter roots”
That's funny. I had trouble keeping up at times to but I thought it was because I was too stoned

Nope, that's also my finding!
Do you think that might be why they chose to include that big fourth wall break during the episode on meditation?
Yup. It’s you looking too far into it.
This is indeed what is going on. If you actually take in what they are saying in episode 3 this would be clear to most. Including the ignorant creator of this video.
as someone with adhd i love this show, having so much going on visually actually helped me focus on what was being discussed ? somehow
I was just thinking about how perfect it is for me. I love podcasts but I need something for my eyes to do so I usually have to listen to them when going to sleep which makes me miss everything. This is a great solution for that
I have mad ADHD and the show was really difficult for me to follow
I have ADHD too and i thought maybe that's why the show annoyed me. i wanted to follow the conversation, but i was way more distracted by the visuals. loved the visuals, found the conversations boring/annoying. followed the dialogue a bit better in episode 2 and the last episode, as he said
Yeah I got it too and this show brought tears to my eyes on episode 8... Changed my perception as a 16 year old.
yea it kinda only works for us ppl.i think adhd is damaging in a lot of aspects, but it does train your ability to keep track on lots of information at once quite a bit
Shut up redditor
I guess when you don't need to animate things to make sense or follow what the audio is doing, that's lazy... But no wait, it is "REVOLUTIONARY". LOL
What's fun about the low frame rate is it kind of simulates what it's like to be on acid, at least some of the visuals
Actually low frame rate is easier, and looks a lot better when doing lip sync.
The final episode of this show had me in tears, was so emotional with his mum
It did drag a bit as he’s dead
Same. I was weeping actually. It was pathetic lol
I mean, he interviewed his mother 3 weeks before she died of cancer.
It was SO HARD not to cry out like into a human mess it took all of my strengh
i sobbed at parts throughout the whole series actually. then that final ep hit me like a ton of bricks.
Wow...
It’s memorable what you wrote
thats beautiful dude
If you die before the next season, you'll have access to it well before the rest of us, that is if you decide to watch it rather than drift endlessly through the cosmo's at lightspeed, or if you get stuck in a bardo loop. Any way, wish you luck in this life and the next homie.
i like that a lot man. i wish you luck.
All of the zombies were high thats why they were talking about drugs in the interview. That’s where I got the link from
I never put the link together, but it does make so much sense. Why the zombies are all having a great time and why the president changes his mind on drugs after having become a "zombie" himself
exactly!
YESS!
Or, the thesis is that people are zombies and using drugs helps provide perspective to escape being an "asleep" zombie.
And once you "get bit" you realize the thing you feared wasn't living that bad
The zombie episode shows them liking being zombies even though they are hurting ppl... refrence to opioid crisis. It complements
As someone who grew up with Adventure Time, this cartoon is a visual acid trip experience. The colorful animation and the art style looks like a modernized version of _Yellow Submarine._
Yellow submarine was more of a musical if anything
@@watchforever1724 Well, Yellow Submarine has some musical numbers based on the Beatles songs, but I'm talking about the surreal art style.
Mr. Friendship fair enough
Ehhhhhh it’s really not as profound and mind opening as everyone thinks.
@@topramen7431 everyone is entitled to their own opinions, try getting blasted and watching it in a comfortable environment.
xImBeaST12321x I’ve seen every episode and honestly it’s just disappointing to me.
And its funny you say they touch on them carelessly lol from my perspective they touched upon these subjects more then any other cartoon or even podcasts I've seen, but at the same time I haven't really watched cartoons or podcasts that talk about how to cope with the reality of death or the manifestation of magic in the 21st century
xImBeaST12321x When I mentioned Hinduism being explained on the show I was specifically speaking of the guest. Just to clarify.
It really is a 'you love it or you hate it' show. I think that even if you dislike it however, it's hard not to appreciate how inventive and refreshing it is.

Perfect episodes : 4 and 8
Great cohesion talking/animation : 2 and 7

This is the best advice to give before watching this, gotta have an open mind and clairvoyance to understand the levels that are being represented all at once.

I'm gonna watch this show, but I don't have high hopes of expectations for anything ward does anymore.
I doubt this will be multiple series, watch it hineslty it's worth your time, but dont go into it expecting adventure time
Idk if this is right but I had a lot of takeaways, first I think the podcast stuff works because the irony was that they can talk about this stuff through all these distractions and mayhems happening around them.

What the guy doesn’t get about the dialogue and the stuff happening around the character is intentional. It’s not that it’s competing for the audience’s attention. It’s the fact that the characters are having a conversation while crazy sh*t is happening around them

The reason I think Clancy can actually talk to his mother even though she’s dead is the simulation made a perfect copy using Clancy’s memories of her
@@cactusslen3603 A few months before she passed, but god do I wish I had gotten to have that kind of closure with my mother.

"This video has be sponsored by Dunca... I'm mean Clancy's Midnight Gospel Podcast"

I was laughing during episode 1, but drowning in tears by episode 8.
Nope. It just means that ignoring the visuals made you focus more on the dialogue.
Myes Are you going to figure this one out for yourself or will I be the one who tells you?
We compare one experience with another similar one and decide which one is better and more worth our time , but if art is subjective then it's different for everyone so it's pointless to judge , yadda yadda something deep
the whole show feels like two people are smoking weed and talking while the artist took LSD
@Spit Dragon That was the one episode where I really liked the story of the episode way more than the dialogue/podcast part
@@X3MAntics The illusion of pretentiousness stems from people projecting, I agree.
(Ex: the zombie vs the legalization of weed in the 1st ep is actually the same since one could only get the ectasy stage through taking the drugs or becoming a zombie 😂)
I feel so stressful for not explaining properly but this is a really really amazing series and so perfect for a chaotic period like now. (Please forgive me because English is not my first language 😂)
I'd love to see a second season in the near future!!!💖
I don't care about this mission they're on or the Ice Cream, get back to discussing ceremonial magick!"
So yeah, definitely not for everyone, but well worth a watch. It's only 8 episodes long so even if you hate it it's less than an afternoon wasted.
Man the episode with his mother really got me...
So it's one of those shows about symbolism?
It should be known that this isn’t Duncan’s old podcast. The Duncan Trussell Family Hour is still very much going. I highly recommend checking it out. A lot of gems to find there.
Sooo, this show is like all those animations on UA-cam where animators animate audio from podcasts and letsplays, but on a massive budget?
The budget isn't that high. The animation is very sub par.
I think it's something a bit like Symor's vids?
I mean, all the random shit happening in the background is what makes it weird and funny, it's kinda the point of the show, the irony
I genuinely cry every time I hear her say that the love isn’t going anywhere.
That's understandable. I can see where you're coming from.
I feel like most of your complaints are based on the first episode.
Have you heard of In this Corner of the World? Its similar to grave of the fireflies and a bit less depressing and sad but still hits those pretty hard at parts.
Can you do A Review of an anime Named Corpse Party?
Corpse Party is amazing! One of my favourite animes/games for sure
I started watching this recently and im absolutely loving it
Actually the zombie episode fits as in the end the idea of being a zombie is kinda like being high
Personally, I loved it.
It's on Now TV
Is it perfect?
Hell no
Is it an excellent example of character work?
Hell yes!
I'm so happy that I'm not the only one that doesn't exactly think that the podcast format works.
2:46 Literally me on Adventure Time.
The animation/whats happening around the characters perfectly normal conversation gets trippy and in the first episodes had almost nothing to do with the conversation but there's beauty in that
The only way large numbers of new people would listen to these type of conversations is with said animation etc
I agree, sentient leg, watching the show 1 episode at a time each day was a blast
The final episode is one of the most heart-wrenching things I have ever seen
I just watched this again and it’s still an amazing, hilarious, and beautiful show. I still hold hope that they’ll make another season.
I was going through pretty bad times around the time when I watched it and it helped my mental health a great deal.
It is hard to explain how much I loved this show. It was fresh as an idea, wholesome and relatable "stories" or more like topics.
And I just love the fact that they gave Clancy a bag so cosplayers can carry their stuff around conventions more easily X'D
Edit: The show is already showing(lol) so many things at a time that it already requires a couple re-watch to catch all detail at it's current framerate.
I loved this because as an asp it was easy to keep up with everthing and i enjoyed the thought provoking pod casts
I dont know under how many videos of this show I commented but I dont seem to get tired to do so. I love this show! Have seen the season maybe 20 times already and everytime I discover new details. And of course episode 8... damn no matter how many times I watch this when the point comes where Duncan asks "theres no way to stop the heart from breaking so what do you do against all that heartbreak?" And his mom simply answers with "You cry..."
My own tears burst out of me before the animation on screen shows Clancy's tears... just like an waterfall.... and after that I always feel like a few Kilos fell off my chest.
I hope they get to do another season!!!
You should review Primal a adult show about a cave man named spear ( I think) and a t-rex named fang
I think I’ll need to rewatch it since I found myself forgetting what was talked about due to the animation.
I started crying as soon as I read the description for the final episode. I was sobbing through the whole thing lmao and I don’t cry at things easily at all
