I've got kind of a full circle story. Craig Ferguson, who played Confidence in this episode, went on to be in the Drew Carey show and later The Late, Late with Craig Ferguson. In 2010, Grant Imahara (RIP) of MythBusters created Geoff Peterson, an animatronic sidekick for Craig and the greatest sidekick ever. Geoff was voiced by Josh Robert Thompson. When I first heard the voice, I thought it sounded like Kryten. But JRT said he modeled the voice after George Takei. Anyway, when I watch YT vids of TLLS with Craig Ferguson, like on the Jaylenofly channel, I am reminded of a character from a RD episode and a voice that sounds almost like Kryten.
Aww man, you missed out Cat's little song just before he finds Lister, that got the biggest laugh out of me because it was so unexpected. "S. E. X. I wanna get it, yeah! *spots Lister from a distance* S. E. X. I think I found it, YOWWW!" This one's probably my second favourite from the first series...Me2 (don't know how to do the little 2) is great.
I actually don't think Lister trying to bring Kochanski back as a hologram is all that futile, since I think he mainly wants her companionship more than he necessarily wants physical contact. Between the choices of being completely alone, only having Rimmer as company, or settling for a limited, but ultimately emotionally fulfilling relationship with a hologramatic version of Kochanski, I can see the vast appeal of the latter.
It would drive him crazy. He would be fine at first, then if she ever showed even the smallest amount of care for him, it would begin the process of having him continue to wish they could take their relationship further, and then cause depression. They pick dimmer because annoyance can drive you forward. Desperation will drive you to suicide
@@fromthecheapseats7126 yeah, I’m pointing that out. Hollie specifically knew that giving Dave what he wanted was not giving him what he needed. Like Hol says, “in terms of words, you had a better relationship with your rubber glove”
1:56 ❤️ 2:09 is the ultimate TED talk! 😁 7:52 freeze frame to make desktop wallpaper with, hehe! It's a funny episode for sure. Loved the ship exterior scene, especially for the budget the show had at this point in time. Looks authentic. Loved Craig Ferguson doing cosplay of the 6th Doctor in this. Loved his late late night show too, until a while after he brought in the talking skull.
I think Lister is aware that he wouldn't be able to have a physical relationship with Kochanski but that he still wants to bring her back. As you pointed out he likes "sappy romantic movies" so it makes sense that he would want to bring her back anyway.
God words cannot express how much I love this show! I used to stay up late on the weekends and watch it with my dad this and blackadder, are you being served, keeping up appearances. Good times XD
I used to watch those when I was a kid, minus Keeping Up Appearances. I never caught that one on TV. I always loved the intro song to Are You Being Served. Very catchy. “Going up!”
I surprisingly totally forgot about this episode. I do remember the gag with the Cat claiming his territory, I found that to be one of the most memorable scenes from the Cat.
Ahh just came across this channel...am a major red dwarf fan when i was a teen could recite entire episodes from memory .....that "gift" is long gone now
I think it's sweet that Lister is still interested in romancing Kochanski, even if they'd be unable to consume a physical relationship. It makes more sense when they retcon their previous relationship though, that Lister was never able to let her go.
After watching this episode for the first time, I was quite surprised to see the first Red Dwarf episode to end on a cliffhanger for the next one (Me2). It's a genuinely novel way of getting the audience to watch the next episode if I do say so myself.
When Ben Browder (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) appeared as a guest, he brought up the fact that Craig had done an episode of Red Dwarf and told him how that was some impressive sci-fi cred, right there.
I'm watching the episode now, and something occurs to me. I wondered how the cat knew Lister was sick simply because he was laying on the ground, then I remember that cats are very intuitive about when people are not feeling well. Whether they choose to be comforting about it, well...
Just a thought, Confidence could have said Confidence: Now I know what's bothering me about that Rimmer guy, the letter on his forehead. Lister: You mean the H cos hes a hologram? Confidence: Its not a H for hologram, it's a sideways ɪ for idiot.
I didn't notice Dav smiling when on the floor, even though I've watched the entire 8 series on Netflix time and time again... more you learn from others/ :)
originally this was suppose to be finale and there would be a hologram of kochanski who would have joined the cast but due to the removal of an episode this was moved up in episode list
4:48 well, the original plan for the show was that this would be the final episode of Series/Season 1, and that Lister would successfully boot up Hologram Kochanski as the cliffhanger for Series/Season 2. I wonder if the reason they don't touch on (ho ho ho) how Lister wouldn't be able to physically interact with her hologram is because they were saving that to be the "twist" under that alternate plan, and a recurring gag/major source of narrative tension in Series/Season 2 and beyond. This early version of Lister was fairly "dumb" so I can see him repeatedly getting carried away, forgetting, and leaning in for a hug/kiss only to fall through her. [Rimmer falling through stuff was a running gag in the first two episodes, after all, and his inability to touch Lister up is a plot point here]. As for Rimmer rubbing it in on Lister, well, we later find out that holograms CAN touch each other, so I suspect would've come up a few times, somehow.
@@Cyborcat guess it also would explain why Hologram Rimmer being unable to touch anything became less and less prominent over the show's run. It was no longer necessary buildup for the hands-off Lister/Kochanski relationship, and just became a hurdle only partially solved by Rimmer being so selfish and cowardly until they finally gave themselves a permanent workaround. [but yeah, there was a strike at the BBC in 87-88 and I guess in the downtime they came up with the idea for Me2 and liked it so much they scrapped another script that wasn't coming along and changed the ending to this and their long term plan, postponing the Kochanski return for what turned out to be a long, long time.]
Can't disagree more about it being a filler episode. The idea that viruses can mutate and that each person can have self doubt and over confidence is a great subject. I also love the cat sitting and eating while Lister needs help. Very cat like. Great episode.
Ha ha, glad to see I'm not the only one that caught that Confidence is Craig Ferguson! I was just coming here to comment that it looked a lot like him, but I wasn't sure if it was, and to my delight I see the other comments have confirmed it. :)
+the3spoonsOFsugar He does, it's just more subtle. Eventually they had to run out of cat-related gags, and even The Cat needs to grow a little as a character.
I'm really surprised that you go so far as to mention that Confidence is Scottish, but not that it's former Late Show host Craig Ferguson, it's listed on IMDB as his very first acting gig.
"What do you mean you killed him chachacha?"

I’m amazed Cat can spell “sex.”
I find it really sweet/cute that Cat sprays lister claming him as his
What and then leaving him for dead? Yeah well sweet.

7:12 ,I love that rare episode where Tom wins. As a kid I always wanted Tom or Wile E. Coyote to win at least once.

4:13 I often use that in most conversations

This was my first experience with Craig Ferguson way before The Drew Carey Show and his own show and his story is very interesting on a personal level
He is one of my favorite comedians

It was nagging me the whole time! I was like " Is that Craig Ferguson? No it can't be - He smiles - IT FREAKIN IS THAT SOB... NO no its cant be." LOL
Fitting he's Confidence considering every clip I've seen from his show he's practically charming the pants of some actress or other :D
And now he does host a game show
