Some people seem to think overrated means popularity while others think it means critical acclaim. Like Drake is popular but he gets a lot of mixed reviews.
I think it’s just a crap word. Something that is subjective can’t be overrated because people have personal tastes. Now Someone might say “ye but, this song is overrated to me” but how can it be overrated to you ? you aren’t the one overrating it if you already dislike the song.
Overrated is just kinda a meaningless slop word ngl, especially since like something can be considered overrated in maybe the general public sphere but like in online circles or whatnot not at all. Like everyone whos into music online is gonna think drake and sheeran are mid thats not an interesting take, give out some ACTUAL hot takes
If someone is popular that is because the majority of people find their music good. So I'm not understanding what you mean. Who cares what critics think when it comes to what is popular on the radio

Like Swans, death grips, animal collective, Caroline Polachek, etc. get very positive reviews from Pitchfork and Fantano, but they are not very popular. So if someone says they are overrated that is what they mean, the critical acclaim. The "Critical Darling" trope. That is different from someone saying Jack Harlow is overrated because Jack Harlow gets shit on by critics all the time. What they mean is that Jack Harlow doesn't deserve his popularity by calling him overrated. Some artist could be either like if someone calls an artist like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, or Tool overrated they could be talking about popularity or critical acclaim.

It’s weird cause like, I really like JID, and his voice is a little higher. I think it’s cause Drake’s voice just sounds more nasally. I gave “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” a shot, and I was just like, “huh, ok.” It didn’t wow me like Forever Story.

Yea, like I said it’s weird. There’s just a certain tone in Drake’s voice I don’t vibe with. I guess for lack of a better word Drake’s voice, to me, sounds more “congested” nasally. Whereas JID’s voice sounds clearer. Idk man.
@@TheFreakazoid777 really? It’s the opposite for me, jid kinda has the same super nasally voice that Wayne and Kendrick have at times. While Drake sounds much clearer, which makes sense since he’s much more commercially successful than them.

If you’re talking “most overrated” as in the artist with the highest number of people that overrate them it has to be drake or Taylor swift. Sure they have talent, but since they are so popular the amount of delusional fans they have that think every piece of music they create is the best thing ever is insanely high
I don't hate Drake, I just get annoyed by proxy because I have a coworker who thinks he's one of the greatest artists ever just because he sells a lot of albums.

I think radiohead sound is very easy to enjoy for most people. There is a lot of masterful music from the krautock, post punk, psychedelic and post rock eras that some radio head fans would definitely love just as much, but some Radiohead fans genuinely love the music more than anything and they ain’t wrong for that. I hate the word overrated cuz it’s meaningless and always spawns meaningless arguments that are silly.

What I particularly like about Radiohead is that, even though they're not nearly as groundbreaking as a lot of fans would like you to think, they're a great bridge between commercial music and more artistically minded and experimental music and are a good gateway that helps someone acclimate to weirder, more out-there music

Not nowadays due to his horrific views, but Kanye is one of the most influential and important figures in rap history. His discog is almost definitely the best in rap history and even one of the best within all of music.
