- In this video, I take a modern Wayfair couch/futon that I found for $40 at Goodwill, clean it up and sell it for almost full retail! I am also revamping some IKEA Nightstands to give them a whole new look! I want to show you that it doesn't only have to be painting older furniture but flipping can also be achieved with new furniture as well!

After seeing my first video from you I looked on market place for chairs. I found 2 turquoise velvet chairs. They were $100 for both. I took the skirt off and painted the swivel base gold, and sold for $300 in less than a day on marketplace. $130 for chairs and spray paint. $170 profit on my first flip!

The way your stain frustratingly kept expanding is what is referred to in watercolor painting as "blooming." It happens because the water is drying unevenly in the middle of a dry area. The easiest way to avoid this from occurring in furniture or clothing, is to clean the spot however you prefer, but also wet the entire cushion, all the way to the edges. This way, you're controlling the edges of the bloom and they won't pool around the spot in a noticeable way.

Thank you. Wish I knew this while raising boys. Stains, car upholstery, left the "boom". I hope to remember this in future. Wet the whole cushion, then go after stain. 💡👵🏼🐞
@ me man: haha! I know where you're coming from bro. I have 5 kids, 3 are boys and they are each a year older than the one before. I got rid of so many pieces of furniture because I didnt know about blooming or how to stop/prevent it. I just assumed it was another piece for the donation bin and started purchasing furniture that didn't absorb; just a quick wipe would do the trick. I also discovered that spray that makes everything waterproof. The name eludes me at the moment.
When screws wallow out a whole bigger than the screw the best thing to do is to put glue down in the hole then put toothpicks in there and snap them off. This will fill up the hole with wood and allow you to put a screw back in the same hole. Trust me it works great!
The toothpicks are a good idea, but lately I been using Chopsticks 🥢 from the Chinese takeout ( when the holes are bigger)

My dad used to do that ...plus he’d use a penny as a washer (he said the penny was cheaper than a washer and it adds a cool story to heirloom family pieces)
I was surprised she didn’t know this and drilled different holes!
E6000 glue works incredibly well to fill a hole, use the same screw and skip any additional wood. Once E6000 sets, nothing will ever budge.
Rarely do I watch a 38 minute UA-cam video. Throw a stained couch in there and I’m hooked til the end 😊

I would have plugged the holes on the night stands with dowel and glue then re-drilled into them. It would really bug me that the legs weren’t symmetrical.

Hey there. First of all I wanted to say thank you for all of your great videos. You are doing a great job and I really enjoy watching and learning. I just flipped my first pink velvet grandma chair last week. I found it being thrown out curbside so I threw it in the back of my truck. I did a professional Steam cleaning on it and sold it on Facebook Marketplace for $120. Oh yeh, I removed the ugly skirt. Lol. I wanted to give you a helpful tip. I own a carpet and upholstery Cleaning business. The one thing I would recommend is instead of putting your cleaning solution in your bissell just get yourself a cheap pump up weed sprayer and mix your prespray in it and spray your furniture down evenly and just use your bissell to rinse and extract. You will get a much better cleaning result and you won't get as many spots return. It really helps to use a soft brush to work in your prespray before extracting. Good luck and happy flipping

@@kessiareis7007 I use a paint brush to "soft brush" upholstery (including adding wet solutions to them but you can get horse hair and boars hair brushes in many shapes and sizes
Excellent advice. I have a rugdoctor at home. You don't put the solution into the rugdoctor. You put in a little spray bottle and spritz, give it some time to do its magic. , and then you continue cleaning the carpets or whatever. then you vacuum and then you do your magic and it is gorgeous
I haven’t read through all of the other comments. When cleaning any type of fabric, do the whole area the same way. When you scrub a certain section only, it pushes any dirt to the edge of the area that you concentrate on.

And when people sit on a sofa...clothes deposit dirt over time. On this i would have scrubed up to the bend with a bit more saturation than the little Bissel provides. Then clean it all but with a little more elbow action at the dirtiest area. Lighter solid colors like this will show the most if only spot cleaning.
That was my suggestion. Clean the entire cushion
Have you researched maybe how to dye fabric? I am not sure if it can be done but it might be worth shot.

Your videos have inspired me to try this out! I just bought 3 tiki bamboo/rattan bar stools for $20. They were vintage and had a beautiful boho chic vibe. All they needed was a little cleaning and I posted and sold them for $400 the same day! Just the beginner's luck I needed to motivate me to keep at it!
Consider getting a steamer for these kinds of projects, Lauren. It will deodorize and sanitize the cushions and if it has any bedbugs, which is always a concern with even the best used furniture, it will kill them. Also a tip from the carpet cleaner guys, steam helps removes stains without a lot of water. Hope this will help in the future.🙏🏽
A tip on the nightstand and holes. On sailboats it is common to use a bit of 2 part epoxy. You put a paper tape on the underside to capture the 2 part resin. Try to add enough that it has a slightly more than filled amount and sand it back. For bigger holes use the resin with a wooden plug. :) Experiment with a piece of scrap wood. Looking great with projects, as always. Thanks for sharing.
An epoxy or Bondo for wood would have been used to fill the holes and then drill new holes in the same spot. I love your work ethic.
I’ve seen other flippers use Durham’s Water Putty to fill holes.

We just added some dowel and wood glue to a hole that had split where there were casters, filled it, rubbed it smooth and we re-drilled the hole to take the caster screw. It worked really well.
Just a tip or two: FOLEX is around $6 at Lowe’s home improvement and cleaned blue ink out of my white carpet, like a snap. Also I don’t know how much that sponge costs that you used for top coat. But it’s also sold as a tire shine sponge for like $2. Love what you do & respect why you do it!

@@pastda3 it also works like a charm on what would be laundry stains. I keep my hubby’s shirts and sneakers perfectly new looking with this product. If it’s textiles, it works and on crazy things you expect it not to work on.
You did such a good job and put in so much effort! I saw your face when the stains weren’t coming out, and I have been there. I foolishly gave up the most beautiful chair because I couldn’t get the stains out. Baking soda has ended up staining some of my darker pieces and never fully come out. Dish soap or laundry soap works since you have the bissel to pull it out. It’s fun to watch your journey and your followers are so supportive. Very inspiring.
I am always surprised when people do not put the dimensions on a piece of furniture when listing on marketplace. This is especially true for larger pieces of furniture like dining room tables, sofas, and headboards. You really do good, thorough work.
Just an FYI, you can use part of a dowel or wooden matchstick ends dipped in glue to fill those holes back up. When they dry, you can redrill into those same spots so the leg won't come out slightly askew. Always enjoy your videos and congratulations on your new subscriber count. 🤗

I actually used toothpicks on a pair of chairs it really worked. i couldn't get the screws to stay in the wood.
I’ve used this method with toothpicks several times. It works like a charm every time!
I was thinking of using wall plugs (not sure if it’s the correct word) to fill the big hole and then screw in the new screw. My father in law always use toothpicks to solve this problems, make sure you glue them or it won’t last long.
I need match Sticks or toothpicks and wood glue to fill my large holes
Love the wallpaper in the drawers with the Dixie Belle In-the-navy. I know this is for some friends so it wouldn't work this time, but I think adding the wallpaper to the short sides on the exterior of these nightstands would look terrific.
Chalk painting upholstery is a game changer, great if you can't get out stains :)
I had my car professionally detailed and he used rubbing alcohol to get the nasty water stains out.. love your channel!!
I was pulling for you on those stains; glad it was a success! I purchased 4 upholstered barstools off of Craigslist 2 weeks ago for $10.00 each. They were literally in perfect condition...I had to do nothing to them. I listed them in 2 places; 2 sold on FB Marketplace and 2 on my neighborhood social media site. Even though there was lots of barstool competition (whoa...so many listed!!!) there was a lot of interest in these; one pair sold for $100 and the other for $115, so not a bad profit for 2 hours of work. I think there are many folks who just want stuff gone, furniture included, so I try to look for those kinds of offerings and pounce on them. I have a pair of cane chairs waiting in my garage and I can't wait to get them staged and listed!
Same here, I try and flip pieces with as little work as possible.
FYI-When my husband has holes that are stripped out , as in those night stands, he will fill the holes with a mixture of wood glue and wooden tooth picks.squeeze in as many toothpicks as you can tightly fit into the hole, broken off as flush as possible. Then grind or sand smooth once it dries at least 24 hours. Then you can put a pilot hole in and it will hold as good as new without having to put new holes thus moving the leg of the table like you did in this video...🙂

Nice work. For the hair pin legs, using brass furniture insert nuts in the existing holes would provide a threaded socket to keep them in their original positions.
I almost changed the channel when you said gray for the night stands, so so tired of Farmhouse. But I stayed and was pleasantly surprised with the Navy and contact paper. These little tables turned out really nice. Good Job Lauren, you have some great creative ideas : )
Hi Lauren, sometimes what ever stained the fabric goes down into the cushion, therefore once you have cleaned the fabric it reactivates the soil from the cushion. I have used a more power vacuum such as a wet and dry vac to pull up as much water as possible. I truly enjoy your work😊

Add glue in the old hole, add toothpicks then screw in the leg.. works like a charm.
More of a chemistry lesson-lol. Video was good because most of us struggle with stains too! IKEA hack was so stylish. The white was cheap looking but the black and wood....tres chic
For future upholstery cleaning....
1/4 cup of Dawn dish liquid to 2 cups of water.
Use a mixer to whip it into foam.
Rub foam into stain as upholstery cleaner.
Use a dry cloth to rub it dry.

Be sure it's Blue Dawn! Don't know why it works better, but the blue works best!!
Ithaca: I was thinking of Dawn because suspected it could be an oil kind of stain or protein ( blood or chocolate) stain which Dawn ( blue) is the best for those kind of stains!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher, I definitely second the blue Dawn suggestions I bet people ate dinner or snacks on that Futon. Dawn is designed to break down fat and oils. You’ve seen the commercials with the baby duck covered in crude oil, right? I’m constantly spilling food when I eat! Lol I spot treat my tops, blouses, T shirts, etc with Dawn and use an old tooth brush to scrub. If it’s really bad I’ll spray the spot with shout stain remover too.
Similarly for clothing with grease stains, blue dawn diluted with water
Lauren I think you should of cleaned the hole seat area rather than just the stain because you've created water stains now if that makes any sense.

I would treat the whole cushion when you spot or you might make a color change in the spots you are cleaning.
I second this because it could be just water stains that are showing up instead of true stains. I have a polyester recliner that does this and unless I treat the whole cushion the same way, spots will show up that look like stains but are really just water stains.
I am also thinking the same thing. Use whatever cleaner again but the same amount of water over thr entire cushion (base) and then use the extractor.
Yep, me too! I tried to clean a chair with water and fabric shampoo and made it 100 times worse because every water mark and drip showed up and left it permanently stained. It is so frustrating and something we all learn through trial and error. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Find that cleaning with rubbing alcohol solves this issue
You are correct to clean the whole cushions over all of the bottom cushions, even any that are not stained. I would spray all the cushions with Crud Cutter, as the cleaner. Also by the time the purchaser adds some pillows and a throw, any spots will be less noticeable. But one thing I do suggest, is before using any cleaners on upholstered furniture, is try it on an inconspicuous spot (like on the edges at the bottom of the piece); in case the color of the piece is not color fast. If it removes the color, then use just plain water, blotting it well over the stain with clean towel; to transfer the dirt to the towel.
Just an FYI. Home Depot carries a brush restorer that you mix with water for less than $3. It works great!

Love your videos, not sure if anyone else suggested but dawn dish soap works wonders and for the scuffed fabric maybe try a razor next time it works on clothes 😉 great work love it so much
I agree with "Ithaca Comments" about the Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid. I have saved many pieces of clothing, tennis shoes and table cloths using Dawn to remove grease (fried chicken), chocolate and grass.
Invest in a sweater shaver for the loose strings and fuzz balls.
I recommend that after you work on the stains, you go back a final time and clean the entire cushion with water making sure you start from the back and move forward pulling all the liquid around until the front turn. You have to make sure the wetness is even/same through the entire cushion inoder to have the same/even drying. If not that’s when you get those stains
Love what you're doing to pay off your student loan debt and the videos are so fun to watch! I looked over the comments and didn't see anyone mention this, but you could always, as a last resort, use RIT dye on the fabric along with the product they sell to set the dye in. Make it a darker color, like a charcoal gray or navy or even black. I'm afraid to paint fabric myself. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
If you don't saturate the fabric evenly, staining will occur at the edge of where you stopped wetting the material.
I use a really heavy wet rag to get entire surface wet before cleaning the entire area with my cleaner.
The wallpaper in the nightstand drawers is sooo cute!! You really elevated a basic Ikea piece! Also glad you managed to (almost entirely) get the stains out of the couch!
my go to stain remover for furniture is what auto cleaners use. Dawn+70% alcohol and my shopvac as an extractor. Works fantastic for all sorts of stains. I've also painted upholstery with a high pigmented chalk paint on a sofa i did. The sofa ended up going for more than it did when it was brand new!

For stains, try 1 teaspoon of powdered Tide with 1/2 gallon water. Make sure you use powdered tide. It is formulated for stains. I’ve used it, it’s amazing.
There's a product you can buy to reseat screws, called spahgetti. It's a plastic tube that fills in the hole that already there and you can put everything in the right place
You can try wood filler, or even put some toothpicks in a hole that is too big to give the screw something to grab into. Also, my favorite use of my Dremel tool is cutting screws and bolts down to the length I want them to be.
Some pieces are made from microfiber cloth which you usually can clean with rubbing alcohol. Love the endtables!
On furniture stains, I’ve had good results with rubbing alcohol on light colored furniture. I think it helps that it evaporates quickly so the cleaning product doesn’t sit on the furniture long enough to become a stain itself. Like with any cleaner, I would do a test spot in a unnoticeable area first.

Trick with cleaning furniture. Don’t wet it so much because the stain is in the sponge underneath. Don’t press down only gently rub over it. That way you’re not soaking the sponge. Good old fashion soap and water I would start with to 😁

I'm so new to your channel. I've learned a lot so far. If I had found that couch, my first thought would have been to strip it down and reupholster it, but you've done an excellent job cleaning it. The nightstands were awesome in fact their versatile enough to have been desks for small children. I am very thankful I found your Channel
Besides the toothpick idea below for filling up holes: you can also try it using an apoxy wood filler or bondo. You can also use a dowel close to the size of the hole and glue that in. This way, you can use the same holes or, at the very least, much, much closer.
Gillette shaving cream, the original formula. Do a test spot though first to make sure it doesn't discolor the fabric. I've used this for years, especially on carpet. Funny that this tip came from a friend that was a teacher for 30 years.

I use barbasol shaving cream to get stains off of my dining table (painted white) and cabinets but I’ve never thought to use it on fabric
My HH fixed a foot stool with the same problem. He glued in a dowel that was large enough to be a tight fit and when the glue has cured, he screwed into the same spot. Nice and sturdy!
Two things. Thing one, when you're cleaning a spot on upholstery or any cloth really, you should scrub in circles starting on the outside of the stain and going to the middle in tighter and tighter circles (toothbrushes are great for the smaller circles). If you start in the middle and go out, you are spreading what caused the stain outward. Thing Two, I use windex for almost all stains. I got that tip from a woman who cleans houses professionally. She uses windex on carpets, furniture and all over the place.

For stains I recently found a product called Carbona. It has even gotten out red wine. They also make a sheet you add to your laundry and you can wash whites and colors together!

Great flips! I did the same thing on carpet stains. I tried too many different products and it would get better, then worse.
Like what you ended up doing, lots of plain, clean water was the answer to get all of the cleaners out.
I thought the same thing that the cleaners were leaving a larger area of soapy residue with each attempt to clean it.

I don't know if you've already tried it, but my favorite stain remover for fabrics is Fels Naptha. It comes in a bar form and you just wet the area where the stain is, rub some of it on the area and then scrub it with your brush. I would of course spot test like with any stain remover, but it's works wonders.
Tip to fix the holes fro the screws with out having to drill new holes: fill the hole with tooth sticks and wood glue. Let it dry and screw back.

After you scrub take a clean white cotton towel dry it. It helps pull the dirt out! Carpet and upholstery cleaning company I worked for taught me that!
To fix a hole that is too large, insert 1-2 toothpicks in the hole and break them off. (I just learned gluing them in is optional.) Then insert your screw. Simple, but effective.

Upholstery cleaner for autos will take those stains out with almost no effort. I've used this stuff to clean furniture and even my Coach purses. Avoid over-wetting the area, as color or stains from within the cushion will leach up into the fabric. Try to only wet the top of the fabric. Highly recommend!
Definitely cats. Most of my furniture looks the same lol. Sweater shavers are a lifesaver!
My little electric sweater shaver is so bomb! I use it for everything, even getting lint off my wool dryer balls!!
For those bedside tables, next time you might want to fill the holes with plastic wood and re-drill them out. I’ve done this before and it works great. Plastic wood is very very strong. Hope this helps!

Great job as usual. Love the style of that couch but you can certainly tell the difference in quality from older to new furniture! The tables look so good with the navy blue!
A tip for old striped out holes that are too big for the screws you can drill them out to the size of a dowl, that you can trim flush then re drill smaller holes so that the screws are in solid.

Lauren, the best stain remover for fabric is DMSO. After a glass of red wine dropped on my Mitchell Gold chair I panicked, but went straight for the DMSO. I used mild dish soap and water and dumped in DMSO, which is a safe for humans solvent. I didn't know if it would ruin the fabric but had done t shirts that I had gotten oil stains out of. It worked perfectly! No problems whatsoever. Immaculate! However, you might want to do a test area on your fabric.
I'd love to see you paint an upholstered piece. I usually use Annie Sloan paints and I'm so tempted to try.

Yes, there is a product that mixes with paint to make it into fabric paint. (Delta Textile Medium)

girl, I hear you and that frustration. I've done so many chairs and two sofas over the past several days. I'm so over fabric and oxyclean, and the Bissell. I need to go back to wood, sanding and painting for awhile! The nightstands turned out so great! I found using a hair clipper to work very well to trim those fuzees on a chair that a cat has gotten at. Thicker strings it doesn't cut but the little snags it great. Keep up the great work your a inspiration to us all.

I have the little bissell, its a brilliant little machine. You can easily earn $100 cleaning a car interior, and they bring them to you, too, no delivery hassle! my top tip when using this for a really filthy interior { and believe me, your couch stain was nothing..)is to lightly spray everything and leave it overnight before you even start, it makes a huge difference.
Have you tried using the Oxyclean powder? It works really well to get stains out I use it on my mattress all the time! Just read the directions mix it with hot water and use a rag or brush, you could even use the baking soda wash that stuff works wonders on carpets as well! And it’s only like $4 at Walmart

Great perseverance on the couch. Glad the stains came out in the end. The end tables are very cute. I was excited to see the gray but the navy blue looks very nice.

I've been doing some projects too and spend time on my knees. Got a cheap kids size paddle board from dollar store. Protect those knees!
