I’m a psych nurse for over 20yrs. The black community does not utilize mental health services like white people. I have found in our community they don’t want to change both men and women. They blame everyone else, but won’t look at themselves. Seeing a therapist should be the same as going to their primary doctor. I’m so glad my family and I utilize therapy. We’re happier because of it. We communicate well and we have a strong bond. Even in this recession, we pull our money together and make sure all bills are paid and everyone has food in the fridge. That’s what therapy has done for us. We’re a real solid family that sticks together no matter what!

From my experience it’s not just about if you’ve had positive male role models around or male relationships. It’s if you’ve been loved from family and you know truly what it is to feel loved. I was shown love most of my life in my formative years and as a young adult by my step GMA,my Dads mom and my mothers mom and my step Dad and of course my mom. And there were some unpleasant things that occurred but inspite of that I was secure emotionally. So because of that I knew how I should be treated by people I came in contact with. Having that foundation made me strong and I didn’t accept abuse. Many of us aren’t shown real love that’s why we don’t know how to express it or receive it. Many had parents that just bought them clothes and gave them material things but never hugged them or told them that they were proud of them or even admired them in a look or a phrase. So,I’m just saying it’s more than just having a father in your life.
