Hands down the best version of this song by a mile. I'm a musician. I'm old. I believe I've heard every good song made. This song by this singer is among the best of them. What a crystal clear, beautiful voice.
I never understood why she didn't become an even bigger star. She's stunningly beautiful, with one of the best female voices Country music has ever heard.
I owned two of her albums, and she was a favorite. I couldn't hardly wait for her next album release. When it was finally released it was a dual vocal with Chet Atkins. Chet Atkins can't sing at all, he can hardly carry on a conversation, and his guitar playing is a pluck-pluck style that sounds irritating and boring. So I never bought the album, and Suzy Bogguss never again had a hit song after recording with Chet Atkins.
@@mikelawhorn1243 I bought the album. It's called Simpatico and there are some very good songs on it. My favorite is her version of the Johnny Cash song "I Still Miss Someone" which she also did live at The Grand Ole Opry and you can find it here on YT.
We just lost Ian. He used to say that this song helped repair the roof on his barn. The royalty cheques kept coming in. So many women recorded it. Suzy does a gorgeous job here.
This is by far the best version of this Great Song anywhere on the internet, Suzy absolutely nails it, what a perfect voice, the best I've ever heard. She owns this song!
She was (still is) an angel. I saw her perform live on a USO tour at Clark Air Base in the Philippines in 1989. I even got to spend some time alone with her and Ricky Skaggs as they cleared US Customs (I was working at the Customs desk as a drug dog handler). She was so beautiful and so gracious....even signed a shirt for me. To a lonely young guy so far away from home, she was like a living angel.
I met her in person at Michael Martin Murphy's West Fest in Red River, New Mexico sometime in the early 90's. She was shopping for a leather jacket with fringe. She was very sweet and gracious. She said she was sorry she had to start one of her songs over again, that she was nervous without her band. I told her don't worry about it, that turned out to be the best song you did. What a great performer but an even better person.
Ian was attempting to become a pro rodeo rider when he suffered a serious injury and was told he'd have to give it up, or risk permanent disability if he suffered another such injury. While recuperating, he began playing guitar, singing, and writing songs. I'm guessing that Suzy's version would have peaked somewhere in the Top Ten or Top Five of the Billboard Country Singles chart, rather than at #12, if she'd been closer to the below-21 age the main female character obviously was, while waiting for her 21-year-old man to arrive and take her away from her parents' home, rather than the 36 or so years all country music fans knew her to be. And when he comes to call, father hasn't a word to say.
All I can say is WOW!! I'm an old 1970s ex-radical with the Judy Collins version of this song deeply entwined with my life, but I have to admit that Suzy Bogguss simply makes it perfect...every line soars...every note is exactly as you hear it in your heart. Can't believe I haven't heard this voice before tonight. Thank you, Suzy, for this wonderful creation. Personally, I couldn't care less whether you're from Texas, Illinois, or Lithuania...you've got this one pegged!!
Love this song, and now that Ian Tyson ( composer) is no longer with us, I hope Suzy keeps singing this to keep his memory alive with you all. RIP Ian, you'll always be " Alberta's Child" , where the "Four Strong Winds" blow on the Canadian prairie.
Simply put: a Beautiful Lady, with a Beautiful Voice!! A Country Belle, through & through. And her eyes - my goodness, have you seen any as expressive & lively as hers? They're Hypnotic!
I saw Ian Tyson in concert in Medford, Oregon back in the day; he wrote this tune, of course, and he said, "I'd like to thank Suzy Bogguss for doing this song and paying for my horse corral and stables."
@Tom Johnston I'll bet those residuals paid for a helluva lot more than a corral and a roof! Ian was practicing his cowboyography, and he just was not gonna brag about it.

Her voice is so crisp and angelic-so absolutely perfect. Nobody rocks this song like she did, does and will. An absolute perfection in range and sharpness. Would love to see her in person.
I remember a fellow country music artist commenting " If you could hear an angel in heaven sing - their voice would sound like Allison Krause or Suzy Bogguss". Such a pure, distinct voice.
I almost smiled at Bogguss' "Just out of the service" because this was at least 20 years when that phrase sent chills down a generation. "We KNOW what that means..." And now, 30 more years later, a couple of generations can only be curious.
Chet once went on record saying he never met another singer that could hit a note as dead center as Suzy Boggus! What a compliment to have to live with!
And sometimes everything comes together: song writer Ian Tyson, great band, the right setting and Suzy one of the greatest female singers of any genre of any period. Period!
Met her in Las Cruces, NM in 1992 at Cowboy's. Live concert that you could dance to. Such a beautiful, classy, talented cowgirl. She wished my girlfriend at the time a happy birthday after her set. She still sounds great.
Suzy Bogguss, a lovely voice from my home state,Illinois....incredibly lovely voice, accurate, true, from the heart, no pomps just real great singing! Thanks, Suzy!
I have run into Americans from Minnesota who speak in sort of " flat tones" like Canadians . ( The guy who wrote this tune , Ian Tyson , is 85 years old but still alive and kicking . He lives somewhere around Longview , Alberta , Canada which is south of Calgary , Alberta , Canada in the eastern foothills of the Rockies . In the 1960`s and 1970`s he sang with his wife , Sylvia Tyson . They divorced long ago . I heard her a few months ago and even though she has to be in her 70`s she can still sing . )
I have listened to every other version of this song and there's not one that comes even close to this recording by Suzy Bogguss. Her voice is absolutely perfect for this song. I watch and listen to this video several times every day and I never get tired of listening to her. I can't wait to see her perform live in Buffalo next month!
A more beautiful song, there is not. But I respectfully disagree. My mother played Judy Collins in our families Volkswagen vanagon. Maybe when she was happy, or sad or just in the mood. I never bothered to ask. But I sure love Judy's version best. Maybe that's what my mom wanted to share with me and my sister.
Such a classic story song that anyone can relate to. I like this version but my favorite is the original recording by Ian and Sylvia from their1964 album "Northern Journey.
