  • A look back at the career and crimes of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. NOTE: I have Bell's Palsy right now and couldn't complete the entire narration. I managed to do about 2/3rds of the video but you will hear a different voice for the last third.

The Corner, interviews with guys who were still active when he wrote the book, not to be confused with the book by Ronald Fried, Corner Men, where the quotes Clancy saying Rocky convinced Emile to try and knock him out. Clancy really did a great job of protecting Emile so who knows if it’s true

Mick: "You brought a gun through the airport?"

Carter was a great fighter there’s no doubt about it, to bully George Benton around the ring you have to be special….To knockout Fernandez in the 1st round you have to be special….Fernandez was an incredible puncher, trained by Angelo Dundee…He fought in the early 60s when the sports’s popularity was still high but had lost a significant amount of its steam since the Golden Age of the 1950s….Gone were the amazing Wednesday and Friday Night Fights, with amazing headliners like Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, Sugar Ray Robinson, Harold Johnson, Patterson vs Johansson…Moore vs Durrelle and on and on…By the end of the decade, the demand outlived the supply….great fighters got old and shopworn…whilst bright prospects were also overmatched and hurt badly early in their careers in order to fill televised fight cards

The only way to refute the lie that Carter actually won was to sue the liars in court . The court decided fairly , and ruled against the liars . The movie was another example of lie ,lie upon lie . The evidence shows that Carter was indeed guilty as charged. Carter was a fair boxer and a good puncher , but not great in anyway. Rubin Hurricane Carter wasn’t a “cold blooded murderer”
    Not to me.
Rubin just had more courage than other black folks of his time to be outspoken against a system of crooked cops that has degraded and oppressed his people for decades prior to the Carter-Artis case.
Rubin was a mean guy, and he admitted that. The reason I love The Hurricane is because I knew in my heart from the start, I knew Rubin couldn’t have done it. There was not enough evidence to convict Rubin Carter, and The Hurricane dominated Joey Giardello, but failed to knock him out…. Joey wasn’t the aggressor in that fight. And sueing Carter wasn’t a tough move either. Regardless of what happened in that fight 40 years earlier.
I watched the whole video, and the ending of this video was not very impressive to me because a man like Carter should be applauded and recognized for who he truly was.
He was a man who, though torn apart by the system, refused to be a victim. In fact, he didn’t even believe in racism. He didn’t believe any man was any less or more than he was. Black, blue, white or purple.
RUBIN CARTER IS MY HERO. And should be a hero to any other fighter.

It’s a shame that these witnesses will lie on an innocent man like that and ruin his life. Also ashamed that our legal system refused to give this man, an actual jury of his peers. I’m glad Carter was able to get out of prison, publish his memoir and continue to pursue justice for innocent prisoners.

Interestingly, Ron Lipton, a supporter of Carter still seems to believe in Carter's innocence even though they had a falling out. I just think he's a conman.

The reality as far as the contract with Tedeschi is, in order to get the shot at Giardello. Carter had to go to under mob control. Once used up. Carter went back to Tedeschi then the shooting occurred. People who knew Carter felt Carter was guilty of the crime. When Carter was retried and released. Tedeschi had
already passed. Dying of a heart attack in his mid forties. Carter tried reaching out to Tedeschi’s family for support of his innocence. The family refused. The belief was Carter had committed the murders.
Carter’s references to Tedeschi in his book the 16th round was mostly propaganda and fiction. Carter was married in Tedeschi’s home. Just for context.

I think that fight with Emile Griffith was a text book example of a fighter getting “caught cold” . It was basically a fluke result .Hurricane was a big puncher and a decent contender but Griffith was an all-time great who went on to beat many fighters who were much better than Hurricane Carter. If they had rematched I think Griffith would have won fairly easily..

I read the 16th round. Carter was 1000% guilty. One of the most vile human beings ever to live. He had no redeeming value. He had a good family upbringing and he wasted it. People who fall for the nonsense are sorry and sad individuals.

Actually no, well, in his younger days he was mean. But the older Rubin fought for justice and post prison he was a humanitarian. He changed his ways. He wasn’t bitter.

A persons race, the media and support from famous and influential people should not dictate a persons guilt.
What are the odds of someone getting stopped near the scene of mass shooting, and having .12 Gauge buckshot shell, and a .32 calibre pistol bullet on the floor of the car , And those were the same cartridges used in the shooting.
    What are the odds ?
I grew up hearing nothing except just another case of legal prejudice and injustice , sure don’t feel that way anymore.

Nice docmentary. Rubin Carter was the most exciting fighter of his day. He burst onto the scene like Manny Pacquiao would two generations later -- a blur of speed, power, and fury. The only thing that beat Hurricane Carter was his own criminal nature. He was an amazing boxer but a very bad person. Bob Dylan was wrong. Carter did commit the crime he was convicted for, and it's good that he was imprisoned for it.

Carter was a glorified club fighter spun into a legend through a Bob Dylan song and a terrible movie. He should not have served all those years in prison, but he wasn't going anywhere as a fighter and we need to stop pretending he was a Saint because he was once depicted by Denzel Washington.

    • @hynekd

That was not an insightful post. I’ve never heard or read anyone depicting Carter as a saint. He wasn’t, but he clearly was a strong, resilient person who did some great things in his later life. Further, while he absolutely was not an all time great, he most certainly was not a “glorified club fighter”. He beat Emile Griffith while Griffith held titles at both Light Middle & Welter, Jimmy Ellis, George Benton and others. He rose to #3 in the world before earning a world title shot. He was outclassed against Giardello while fighting for the title and clearly lost the fight. Nevertheless, he earned the opportunity. Not exactly the resume of a club fighter, glorified or otherwise.

So was he innocent or was it an unfair trial? I have known about Carter being an avid boxing fan, they made it out be like he was wrongfully imprisoned because he DIDNT commit the crime. I heard nothing in this documentary that a. makes me feel like he was innocent and b. makes me feel sorry for him. He came from a decent family and chose to be a thug. I had also heard that his career was on the downslide unlike the things I had read. Like he was robbed of being a Champion. No he robbed HIMSELF from being a champion. Good one Rich! I hope you are ok

Think how the court took away his time when he couldve been champion or at the least fighting for it , later on look how they were after Liston then to Band Ali for 5 years when no man on earth could beat him and that was boxing think of how many men of color that the world didnt hear about or read about or saw on tv that was locked up for a crime they didnt not do , Carter was lucky he had college kids prove he was robbed of a life that group of police & judges lawyers should all have been licked up in prison in general population and let it be known who they are
