There's an idea for a cannonball: coal to shoot into some stockings hung on different surfaces (e.g. wood, concrete, masonry). You might contact a local concrete factory. They might give you a few test cylinders for free, provided that they don't mind showing the effects of their concrete getting shot. You could try different grades of coal for the cannonballs (e.g lignite, anthracite). I'm not sure how one goes about fashioning a lump of coal into a sphere of the correct size, or how much work and financial resources the entire video(s) would require. Maybe an idea for next Christmas.
Since we’re primarily a blacksmith shop we’ve got a huge pile of coal out back! I’ll give it a shot to see if I can make anything out of it. At worst we could always use it as grape shot or canister shot!
2 shots per 3 types of concrete per 3 types of coal. 3 test cylinders each from each type of concrete test cylinder and test type (e.g. three test cylinders from the same batch of concrete that are subjected to a water infiltration test).

6 cannonballs from each of 3 types of coal (ideally from the same coal formation and location within the seam). 18 cannonballs in total.
