I am so happy by the coverage of this game by Mr. Antonio Radić. Thank you Mr. Radić for your contribution to chess. I remember trying to contain my excitement that night after the game 2 loss against Mr. Harrwitz. From the first two games of the match, I was able to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of Mr. Harrwitz. And so, I knew at what level to perform in the next games (so that I don't "show off"). The final move (…Kf3) creates zugzwang… which is not necessary for winning but forces white to give up the f4 pawn immediately: The king can't move or the c2 pawn will queen, so the rook has to move and is unable to keep defending the f4 pawn. Also, it seems a bit simpler to just play Kxf4 after Rh3+. Very nice comeback by Morphy and a great explanation as always!
Dang those guys were good. Interesting sidelight on Morphy, he was always such a gent it's easy to forget he was as competitive as Carlsen or Kasparov and hated losing just as much.
Sometimes you have to just grin and bear it while you learn an opponent's style, then you can unleash the beast. They get a little cocky after a win or two, make a few mistakes, and then wonder what happened.
@Agadmator Morphy played the first two games very casually. He was in awe of Paris and would come home well past midnight maybe partying hard. Before the 2nd game Morphy went to bed at 4am. However once his second's warned him, he began going to bed early and then rest is history.
