    Story about Paul Morphy
He was playing a match with Adolf Anderson. The game started early in the morning. There were no clocks back then
Anderson plays e4 Morphy plays e5
Time creeps by. The shadows move across the wall
Anderson sits there deep in thought
Morphy being super duper polite sits quietly
Finally he can contain himself no longer "Are you going to move? He asks
Anderson jerks awake and looks "What is it my move?"
Clocks were added to chess soon after.

#suggestion one of my games. I can already hear the commentary:"And it is at move nine that white resigned the game. Why did he resign? Well, there's not much to be done here: the Queen is trapped, the knight is forking the two rooks and the king, the bishop is pinned, you are down four pawns and two pieces."

"It's one of the games where Morphy had the black pieces, obviously."
No, not necessarily! It's a little known fact that in the 19th century there was no rule requiring that White moved first. Half the time the player with the black pieces would move first. Those games in which Morphy had the black pieces but moved first are now presented as if Morphy had had the white pieces.

@@Mokshitk I'm not sure if you're joking. Technically, you're right. But surely it was assumed that Morphy "had the black pieces" in the time-honoured sense of moving second, and I was simply pointing out that this assumption is not necessarily correct.

I love that at 5:00 all of the pieces in both sides' back ranks are on opposite colors of the opposing bishop, except for black's king, which has to be on white to block the white pawn at g7. Small little touch, but it's one of those details that strong players will do without thinking much about it.

You should show a bunch of Morphy games against guys like John William Schulten, George Webb Medley, and especially Charles Maurian next as those games are all very beautiful and feature heavy sacrifices and strong attacks. Of course Morphy played a lot of weaker players but the games themselves are amazing to watch :).

    • @dahshkeeNYer
      @dahshkeeNYer 4 роки тому

Agreed, but I think the true value in Morphy's games is in showing weak players how to creatively take advantage of weak play. Morphy's opponents aren't defensive monsters; they neglect development, leave the king in the center, ignore weak color complexes, etc., just like weak club players do now. A thorough study of Morphy's games goes far to help struggling players find ways to beat inferior defenses.

The second game (Lowenthal's only white) was decided by a horrible blunder by Lowenthal leading to the loss of his queen. The game was of such poor quality that while Morphy showed the game to several people over the years, he wouldn't publish a game with such a gross blunder. There is a distinct possibly that Morphy even offered Lowenthal a take-back over the move during the game. The two whites by Morphy were games 1 and 3, though I'm convinced that this is game 1, not game 3.

(I mean I know he played blind chess and won against several opponents), but that thing I’m wondering is kinda cool to me, isn’t it😊
The lights are turned off, it’s the midnight, you’re in bed, and you dive into the game laying on your back with your eyes closed just listening to Agad’s voice. Pretty awesome experience if you ask me.

I heard that Lowenthal’s eyebrows shot up in surprise every time Morphy made a move. He greatly underestimated Morphy’s gameplay.

Great sepia photo of both of them (it was the size of a pixel at first!). Also the chess pieces look really grand.

1:00 bruh that nose tho he definitely smells what the Rock is cookin before he was born. He doesn’t see 3 moves in advance he smells them. When Toucan Sam said “follow your nose,” this man had no choice. I knew the penguin from Batman looked like a chess player, but I didn’t know he was one. Man that nose!

It must've been terrifying for Lowenthal after 9-10 moves into each game when he realized what he was up against.

You can see in the photo that Paul had a VERY early beta edition of the Civil War chess set from the Franklin Mint. Those folks were visionaries.

    Him: A bishop.
Me: Oh you mean the immortal Bishop which died?

You have to like the way Morphy goes for the throat but when necessary quickly converts that to a material advantage or a positional bind and plays the rest of the game from that angle.
