Let us not forget that Morphy got dreadfully sick shortly after arriving in Paris (he drank the water) and still insisted on going to the club to play in order to keep promises made, and with a splitting headache and very disordered bowels still managed to pull this win out of his... hat.
A few things: Paul Morphy saga started in January 2020, so it's been about 14 months. 63 videos have been made, there were 85 videos in 10 months for the Capablanca saga. He also had 65 videos in less than 4 months during the Bobby Fischer story, so the Morphy Saga has been going for the longest (actually, about the same length as both of the previous sagas combined) and has the least amount of videos so far.
This reinforces my theory that Morphy plays like a cat that has caught a mouse, but lets it run around juts enough to get it hope and then he bats it around some more for amusement. I think Lasker brought home the point that you should always make the best move. Morphy, who was used to playing giving odds, is perfectly willing, I believe to give his opponents a fighting chance, especially if it gives him the opportunity to paint a masterpiece. Thank you for not just showing sacrifice after sacrifice against horrible players. We get to appreciate his brilliance, but also we see his weaknesses and get an insight into his personality. I know this is an old video but keep up the excellent work. You have motivated me to waste hours of my day again (after 30 year on the wagon) and I am almost thinking of going to a bar or a library to share my excellent knowledge.
Yeah Morphy basically plays at the level he thinks is sufficient to win after an entertaining game. He really saw chess as a diversion to have fun with, I guess. Makes for fun games but I think most of us would like some kind of an answer to the question "How strong was Morphy really?" and you just cannot answer that.
I think you are right. That's what he was doing, but he was being an even bigger jerk to Journoud, because he didn't just avoid playing moves that would win the game too quick. He actually played moves that should have let Journoud win easy. But, he apparently rightly Journoud would never find the wins.
Journoud: I have just come back from the library. Shall we play another game? Morphy: Sure thing. I myself have just returned from the bar and would like to give Doctor Drunkenstein some inspiration.
Did anyone else expect him to say..."i am just kidding...Morphy didnt go for Evans gambit...i dont know why..its forced mate in 45..but okay..whatever"🌚
They were clearly playing Marti Gras style - where you play the SECOND best move you can find because your opponent can force you to play a different move unless they see one stronger.
@@adeel9668 You could never win the game under those rules. Even if there were two ways to mate in 1, you wouldn't be allowed to play either as they are equally strong. Ok, I guess you could win the game if the only legal move is checkmate. But I don't know if such a position is possible to evolve under these rules.
@@elonweintraub9758 Bloody hell, if you have five moves which transpose into the same thing, you probably would also say by these rules you can't choose any of them?
I understood it differently, the opponent can tell you once per move to play a different move. So if there are multiple equally good moves, you can choose any of them, and if they tell you to play different move, you'll play any orher of those equally good moves. That is actually a pretty interesting game mechanism. But I don't know either, who or what is Marti Gras, and a quick search did not help me. @OP, would you please explain?
That's what I thought. Even I could see that Q-e6 was the best move, and this from a man who gets about 1 in 20 of the "I'll just pause this game" ones correct.
Many years ago I read in an book that it was often seen as good manners in Morphy's time to let your host (opponent) win the first game in a set. That would explain the bad moves but it wasn't their first game. As others in the comments have pointed out, he also got very sick after arriving in Paris.
7:50 you suggest that if white captures the bishop on f2 then bxe4+ wins a rook and the knight, but would be6+ winning the white queen be better? Or have I missed something?
Thank you for the amazing content as always! Just FYI: Journoud is pronounced [Joornoo] instead of [Joorno]. It is easily mixed up as Journaud [Joorno] would me much more common as a French name than Journoud [Joornoo].
I think the Saga will be more interesting when AGAD start covering the match between Morphy and Anderson since Anderson was probably the strongest player that Morphy ever faced. The fun fact is that all story is rolling about the long series of games played vs Morphy before meeting Staunton while in fact Anderson was the strongest player that Morphy had ever faced. (Sorry AGAD if i did spoil it for you :P)
I was so pleased with myself that I found the move; and then I realized after a couple seconds, that I found the move because it results in the thumbnail XD
I think a lot of this game from morphy can be explained by your quote. "morphy was an artist not a butcher" A lot of these best moves are butcher moves

The game notation shown below the game doesn't appear to match the game in the video. I'm trying to find my favorite missed tactic from the video, in the notation. I'm looking for Qb4 followed by c5 somewhere, but I don't see it (missing Qe6+ and Qf6+ winning). I'll go play over the game notation and see it perhaps it's just cut off before this happens.
