I don't remember the players, but there was a GM game from last year where this exact tactic got played, so I am sure Robert recalled that game. There is a relatively well known game in the Trompowsky which may have been the first time this tactic was deployed. I have no doubt Fabi knew about both games.
True, but he said he had a little help from the engine since he saw white was winning after bishop to e4, and then searched for the winning moves by process of elimination.

Funnily enough, this exact thing happened between Nijat Abasov and Sabino Brunello. Gotham Chess covered this in a video about a year ago called 2500 Elo, Lost in 7 moves. It's insane to see this happen again.
What a series of moves, and great job by the commentators making it so engaging. this is exactly what we need in televised chess to make it interesting
Fabi's laugh at the end costed him the match though. Firouzja, on the question of how he bounced back after such loss, mentioned in the interview that once he saw Fabi laughing, he got motivated more than ever to beat the guy and that's what happened.
Im a big Alirreza fan, but this was epic anyway. David Howell and Robert Hess are the best commentary pair out there. Their reactions, and Fabis smile - just priceless stuff. Happy Alireza won the match still. Will it be him against Magnus again. Anyway, fantastic content. Thanks guys.
Happy to finally enjoy and appreciate such videos! My chess level is way below this game but high enough to follow the commentaries and the astonishing game. Poor Alireza, that must have felt awful at his level
Alireza was pissed cuz fabi smiled and laughed after that trap worked. But I don't think fabi was necessarily laughing at Alireza. Its just an instinctive smile you get on your face when the trap you set actually worked.
This video is also a great example of how useful it is to see the eval bar, even for GMs. The reason Robert found this tactic so quickly while Firoujza couldn't was mostly because the eval bar told him that Be4 is still good for white. Therefore, he figured white doesn't need to save the first rook, which allowed him to find the 2nd rook "sac" too.

This is amazing. Even if black just takes the pawn with the night and lets the rook fall, he has to block the check with the knight, white then takes the night, forcing the king to d8 then nxf7 and the second rook falls. Crazy stuff.
