I think it would be neat if you could someday explain the difference between true Damascus steel, and the weld-patterned Damascus that we actually see today. BIG difference!
@@jenningsjennings2051 Pattern welded steel is just 2 (or more) separate alloys that are bonded together. This is folded and deformed and then made into a knife. The two alloys are ideally quite similar with the only major difference being a slight change in stain resistance. Real damascus, which is often called wootz nowadays, is a pretty basic low alloy crucible carbon steel that, due to trace impurities, forms a natural flowing pattern. What a crazy good deal on that Penguin. If I didn't already have one in S35VN and 'blue jean' micarta, I'd be all over that. It's less than a lot of knives with lower edge retention blade steels.
I've been kind of disappointed by commercial 14C28N knives as the suggested hardness for best edge retention by the maker Sandvik is HRC 62 and only custom makers make it that hard. It is still tough and is still easy to sharpen. Reason for not being as hard as it should be is it is cheaper to heat treat it at a shorter period of time and at a lower temp is my guess. There is no reason to think it's going to break, that is if the person who specs the heat treat out actually looked at it. I'm done with soft AEB-L/13C26 based knives that are heat treated too soft. I bought a Civivi they claimed was 60-62 HRC and I didn't get through one cardboard box before I had shiny spots on my edge, I don't think it was 62 hardness and now Civivi is back at 58-60 Rockwell.
You're joking right? Most of these knives are Chinese, if not all. They don't heat treat at all. Heat treat takes effort, expertise and greatly adds additional costs. The reason it's rusting is Chinese don't even use the steel that's labeled on the knife, it's generic communist stainless special. That's why it rusts.
