    Sheeeeit. Was hoping to want to buy a CRKT again: axis lock, good steel, nice design, American made, aaaaaand $100 more expensive than it should be. Guess I’ll take the (also hogue) deka in magnacut. That’s a dang shame. To get CRKT to use a decent steel you have to Way overpay.

      @Ianthe1 Рік тому +1

      Yea not sure how the Deka with Magnacut is less expensive than a CRKT... Makes no sense. These weird prices are starting to get me out of the knife hobby.

      I think most of em over say 125 are gouging. Of course that's just MO. Just can't see those prices for a little better piece of steel when I have no problem hitting a knife on ceramic every once in a while. Especially when most of us who will admit that the toughest thing they're used for is to cut cardboard. Too many good utility knives to use a pocket knife to do

      @@rickyhurtt5568imo the best example of crkt overcharging for their shit is the fact they sell a model of the m16 with AUS8 for literally 78 dollars. the “best” steel the m16 comes with is d2 and that costs like $120, the next best would be 12c27 which is an okay steel at best. crkt is on crack, they charge like 200+ for 154cm

  • @MountainFisher

    I've been kind of disappointed by commercial 14C28N knives as the suggested hardness for best edge retention by the maker Sandvik is HRC 62 and only custom makers make it that hard. It is still tough and is still easy to sharpen. Reason for not being as hard as it should be is it is cheaper to heat treat it at a shorter period of time and at a lower temp is my guess. There is no reason to think it's going to break, that is if the person who specs the heat treat out actually looked at it. I'm done with soft AEB-L/13C26 based knives that are heat treated too soft. I bought a Civivi they claimed was 60-62 HRC and I didn't get through one cardboard box before I had shiny spots on my edge, I don't think it was 62 hardness and now Civivi is back at 58-60 Rockwell.

    • @tunahxushi4669
      @tunahxushi4669 Рік тому +1

      You're joking right? Most of these knives are Chinese, if not all. They don't heat treat at all. Heat treat takes effort, expertise and greatly adds additional costs. The reason it's rusting is Chinese don't even use the steel that's labeled on the knife, it's generic communist stainless special. That's why it rusts.

    • @Freakmaster480
      @Freakmaster480 Рік тому

      @@jenningsjennings2051 Pattern welded steel is just 2 (or more) separate alloys that are bonded together. This is folded and deformed and then made into a knife. The two alloys are ideally quite similar with the only major difference being a slight change in stain resistance. This means that the final blade be exposed to an etchant to cause differing levels of oxidation and make the pattern appear. This serves no practical purpose and just exists to be pretty. If anything it makes a worse blade due to inconsistent properties in the steel potentially impacting heat treats.
      Real damascus, which is often called wootz nowadays, is a pretty basic low alloy crucible carbon steel that, due to trace impurities, forms a natural flowing pattern. This was in its day a pretty okay steel that became deified as the mythos grew around it. It wasn't the best in it's day and it's pretty shit by modern standards but it's stunningly beautiful. Contrary to popular belief, we do still know how to make it and it is still made in small batches, it is just expensive and worthless outside of pieces that are more for art than any practical purpose.

    I've always been curious about the history and purpose of certain blade shapes and designs. Right now I've been researching the harpoon point for my own knowledge. Having said this, I think it would be great if we could get an episode of KnifeAQ that did a brief overview of blade shapes, their history and purpose of their designs. I realize there are several, but perhaps maybe 5 or more commonly seen blade shapes.
